The reliable way to track superhero universes is to keep a separate checklist for each continuity, choose one viewing order, and record progress in a tracker that will not disappear when you change devices. For a first MCU watch, use release order; use Disney+’s living in-universe timeline for a rewatch or lore project. Keep the 2013–2023 DCEU separate from the rebooted DCU that began with Creature Commandos in 2024, and put Elseworlds such as The Batman and Joker in their own list. If you are preparing for Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December 2026, use an essentials cut rather than attempting the roughly 230-hour complete marathon.
What is the simplest system for tracking shared-universe timelines?
Use one list per universe, one chosen order per list, and one place to mark each title watched. Do not combine every cape film and television series into a single mega-list: an MCU season, a DCEU film, an Elseworlds story and a Fox-era mutant film do not all belong to the same continuity.
- Choose the continuity. Start with MCU, DCEU, DCU, or another clearly labeled collection such as X-Men, Spider-Man or the Arrowverse.
- Choose the order. Release order is the safest first watch. In-universe chronology is best for a second pass. An essentials list is for a deadline.
- Choose a tracker. A signed-in service can sync across devices; a browser-only checklist is private but can vanish with site data.
- Mark the exact unit you watched. Television is usually tracked season by season, not as one undifferentiated series. Specials, One-Shots and animated seasons need their own entries when the chosen list includes them.
This system prevents the most common mistakes: counting a season as a film, placing a spin-off in the wrong universe, or losing checkmarks after clearing browser storage.
Which watch order should I use for the MCU?
Use release order for your first MCU viewing, Disney+ chronology for a rewatch, and an essentials cut when a theatrical deadline matters more than completeness. Chronological order is not a superior first-watch order; it can reveal where later stories fit before the films intend you to know.

| Order | Best for | What it does | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers | Follows cinema and Disney+ debut dates, preserving intended reveals and end-credit turns | Earlier-set stories appear later |
| Disney+ in-universe chronology | Rewatchers and continuity mapping | Places events by story time, including seasons, specials and One-Shots | Can spoil later placements and is revised when Marvel adds titles |
| Essentials or speed run | Viewers racing a date such as Avengers: Doomsday | Retains the plot links a deadline requires | Optional character arcs and connective tissue are omitted |
Why release order works for a first watch
Release order lets post-credit scenes, introductions and crossovers land in the sequence Marvel Studios designed. WatchOrders’ 20 October 2026 guidance starts with Iron Man (2008) and calls chronology a better second pass. Esquire Philippines makes the same spoiler argument for its Road to Doomsday list.
When chronology is the better choice
Use the official Disney+ chronology when you already know the major reveals and want to study cause and effect. Dates are sometimes approximate, and stories such as Loki and What If…? do not fit a single normal timeline. Fan reconstructions may prioritize narrative coherence when Marvel has not assigned a precise year.
What is Disney+’s current official MCU timeline?
Disney+ is Marvel Studios’ current canon reference. Marvel.com’s 22 October 2026 guide directs viewers to the Marvel brand page on Disney+ and two groupings: the MCU Movie Timeline and the MCU Complete Timeline. The complete version includes films and television seasons separately, so it is the practical list for anyone who kept losing track of Netflix-era shows, specials or animated entries.

It includes the Netflix-era seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher, along with I Am Groot, Loki, What If…? and Marvel Zombies. The current end of the list reaches Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Wonder Man, Daredevil: Born Again season 2, The Punisher: One Last Kill and VisionQuest.
The order is a living document. Marvel republished its complete guide in June 2026 and changed the placement of Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again season 2; the October republish placed VisionQuest after the special. A saved fan list can therefore become stale even when every checkmark is correct.
Why Netflix Marvel appears in the list now
Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum said Disney+ is the studio’s “medium to define the canon now.” After he said in January 2024 that he was comfortable treating Daredevil as part of the Sacred Timeline, the Netflix seasons were added to Disney+’s chronology. Commentators cited by Wikipedia put the added Netflix material at about 161 hours.
Should I use the official MCU timeline book?
Use The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline as a print reference for Phases One through Four, not as a replacement for Disney+’s current list. DK published the 344-page book on 24 October 2023 with Anthony Breznican, Amy Ratcliffe and ReBecca Theodore-Vachon; its ISBNs are 0744090997 and 9780744090994.

The book was created in close collaboration with Marvel Studios and covers the Earth-616 Sacred Timeline through Phase Four. Winderbaum described it as the first time the studio was “officially laying out the timeline.” Its own note says the presented timeline is specific to the Sacred Timeline through Phase 4 and that future multiverse stories may converge. Searches did not surface a 2025 or 2026 print update covering Phases Five and Six, and the Netflix shows were added to Disney+ later rather than to a confirmed new edition. For current placement, trust the Disney+ Complete Timeline.
How do I set up an MCU checklist that stays usable?
Start with the official list, then decide whether your checklist is complete, movies-only or essentials. The following procedure works with a web tracker, a spreadsheet or paper.
- Open the Disney+ Marvel brand page. Copy the Movie Timeline if you want films only, or the Complete Timeline if you want seasons, specials and One-Shots.
- Label the order at the top. Write “MCU release,” “MCU chronology” or “MCU essentials.” Never mix order modes without a visible divider.
- Split series by season. Record Daredevil season 1, season 2 and so on as separate rows when your source does; this matches Disney+’s treatment.
- Add optional material in a separate block. Legacy or adjacent titles such as the Raimi and Webb Spider-Man films can remain a side quest instead of interrupting the MCU run.
- Mark each title immediately. Use one state for watched and another for started or rewatching if the tracker supports it.
- Record the source date. Put “Disney+ list checked October 2026” at the top of a spreadsheet so a later reorder is recognizable.
Do not maintain three competing checklists. Pick one primary tracker and use a second source only to resolve a disputed placement.
Which trackers preserve my watched status?
The important difference is persistence, not decoration. Browser-local tools are quick and private but can lose data; a Google-signed tracker can follow you to another device. The Disney+ page supplies authority and order but does not provide a personal watched-state checklist.
| Tracker | Scope and useful features | Where progress lives | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road to Doomsday | Release and timeline modes, skip guidance and hours-left math toward 18 December 2026 | On the current device; clearing browser data removes marks | Deadline-focused MCU catch-up |
| MCU Watchlist | More than 130 MCU and Marvel-adjacent titles, Essential/Optional labels and a schedule planner | Local browser storage; no account | Large MCU and legacy catalog |
| WatchOrders | MCU and DC release, chronological and shorter cuts | Local storage; no server sync | Simple cross-universe lists |
| Geeks Watchlist | Separate MCU, Spider-Man, X-Men, DC and Arrowverse collections; release, chronology and rating orders | On-device; no account | Several universes without one merged timeline |
| Marvel Timeline | Chronological filters, direct links, theatrical titles and a “DoomsDay Essentials” update | Mobile app data; affiliation is independent | Phone-based MCU reference |
| Marvel Order on GitHub | Open-source release and official Disney+ chronology plus non-MCU Marvel entries; data checked daily from TMDb | Depends on the implementation you use | Readers who want inspectable source data |
| Reddit r/MCU_Timeline tracker | 82-entry poster grid, format and Phase filters, Netflix filter, “Mark next as watched,” and a 15-title Doomsday checklist | Google sign-in sync | Cross-device progress and community-maintained scope |
These projects are fan-made or independent, not studio services. Treat Disney+ as the authority for current MCU placement and use a tracker for your personal state. The Reddit tracker’s 82 entries include films, live-action seasons, animation, specials, One-Shots and Netflix Defenders; another tracker may intentionally omit some of them.
How we picked the practical options
The criteria are continuity labels, order choices, season-level granularity, persistence, update activity and a clear way to separate essentials from optional or adjacent stories. No independent laboratory study establishes a universally “best” tracker.
How do I keep checkmarks from disappearing?
Local storage is tied to a browser profile, device and site data. Clearing cookies or using a private window can erase it, and a different browser will not see the same marks. If the tracker offers Google sign-in, use it when cross-device recovery matters; otherwise export or copy your list periodically.

How many DCEU movies are there, and what order should I use?
The closed DCEU contains 15 theatrical films from Man of Steel (2013) through Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), according to Cinopsys’ October 2026 count. Watch the DCEU in release order first. For a chronological rewatch, the only major adjustment is to begin with Wonder Woman (set in 1918), then Wonder Woman 1984, and continue with Man of Steel onward.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep a DCEU checklist separate from the new DCU. The DCEU ended as a continuity; it is not the foundation of James Gunn’s rebooted universe.
What is the new DCU order?
Treat the DCU as a new, open list beginning with Creature Commandos (2024). Cinopsys’ current order is Creature Commandos → Superman (2025) → Supergirl (2026) → Lanterns (2026) → Clayface (2026) → Man of Tomorrow (2027).
Release order is still the least confusing default because the universe is being made now. Gunn has said the DCU can tell stories from different places and times and that individual stories do not need to exist only to build toward a crossover. Clayface is connected canon but is set before Superman, making it an early example of a DCU film released out of chronological order. Peacemaker season 2 sets up Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 9 July 2027.
Where do Elseworlds, Spider-Man and X-Men belong?
Give every continuity its own collection. The Batman and Joker are Elseworlds, not DCU canon, so placing them between Superman and Supergirl creates a false chronology.
Use the same separation for Marvel-adjacent material. MCU Watchlist labels the Fox X-Men films, the Blade trilogy and Sony Spider-Man films with confirmed MCU connections as Legacy titles. Road to Doomsday treats the Raimi and Webb Spider-Man films as an optional side quest. The October 2026 Reddit tracker includes X-Men and X2 in its 15-title Doomsday checklist because mutants are returning, but that editorial choice does not make the Fox films part of the Sacred Timeline.
Geeks Watchlist’s model is the cleanest for a large collection: one collection each for MCU, Spider-Man, X-Men, DC and Arrowverse, with a shared watched mark when a title legitimately appears in two collections.

How long does a complete MCU catch-up take?
Choose the scope before you schedule. Published figures vary because lists include different seasons, specials and adjacent titles.
| Scope | Published runtime or count | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Road to Doomsday-style list | About 230 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026; broad fan-list scope |
| Movies-only version of that list | About 95 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026 |
| 15-item speed run | About 33 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026 |
| Essential MCU release-order cut | 94 hours 7 minutes | WatchOrders, updated 2026 |
| Netflix Marvel seasons added to Disney+ chronology | 161 hours | 2024 commentator estimate cited by Wikipedia |
| Phase Four total | About 54 hours | IGN figure cited by Wikipedia, 2024 |
| Phase One total | Slightly over 12 hours | IGN figure cited by Wikipedia, 2024 |
These are published estimates, not timings produced by this site. The MCU’s in-universe present is described as 2028 as of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), while the story span begins in the 1940s and includes branches outside ordinary time.
What should I watch before Avengers: Doomsday?
If your target is the 18 December 2026 theatrical release, use an essentials list. Disney+ offers a “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist; the October 2026 Reddit tracker records 15 titles and lists Loki seasons separately. WatchOrders and fan apps also expose shorter Doomsday cuts.
Do not attempt the 230-hour list unless you genuinely want every available season and special. A 15-title or roughly 33-hour speed run is designed for a deadline, while a 95-hour movies-only cut preserves more context without requiring every television season. Recheck the playlist close to your viewing date because Marvel can revise the grouping.
Where can I stream these titles?
Availability depends on country and changes through licensing deals. MCU titles in the Road to Doomsday list are on Disney+ in the cited coverage, while some Spider-Man films also appear on Netflix; Sony-held home-video rights create gaps in some countries. MCU Watchlist publishes a US guide spanning Disney+, Netflix, Max and Hulu, but that guide should not be treated as a global catalogue.
For DC, theatrical releases and services such as Max carry different parts of the catalogue, and series availability changes by region. Check the service in your country for each title rather than assuming an entire universe is on one platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I do when a tracker and Disney+ disagree?
Use a simple authority hierarchy: Disney+ for current MCU placement, the 2023 DK book for a stable Phase 1–4 print reference, and a dated tracker for personal progress and optional cuts. First check whether the disagreement is caused by a season being split, a new special being inserted or a fan list intentionally favoring narrative coherence.

Can one checklist cover every superhero franchise?
It can, but it should be a dashboard of separate collections rather than one chronological stream. A useful top-level sheet has tabs for MCU release, MCU chronology, DCEU, DCU, Elseworlds, Spider-Man, X-Men and Arrowverse. Each tab can share a watched column while retaining its own continuity and source date.
This arrangement lets you follow a crossover without rewriting history. A Spider-Man film can be marked in a Spider-Man collection and an MCU-adjacent collection, while an Elseworlds Batman film remains visible without being misidentified as DCU canon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read the official MCU book before watching the films?
Yes, but it is organized as a reference guide rather than a spoiler-safe first-watch plan. Because it explains events through Phase Four and includes multiverse context, reading entries out of sequence can reveal relationships intended to arrive later on screen.
Why does Disney+ sometimes move a series in the MCU timeline?
Marvel adds new projects and can revise how a season fits relative to specials or films. A fan tracker may preserve an older snapshot, so record the date of the Disney+ list you used whenever you rebuild your checklist.
Do I need to watch every Netflix Marvel season to understand current MCU films?
No. The seasons are now represented in Disney+’s Complete Timeline, but an essentials or movies-only plan can omit them when time is limited. Include them when your goal is a full continuity map or a Daredevil- and Punisher-focused run.
Is the DCU connected to the DCEU at all?
They are separate continuities for watch-order purposes. Individual references or returning performers do not turn the 2013–2023 DCEU list into a chronological chapter of the post-2024 DCU.
