Choose Supabase for Flutter when your app depends on relational data, SQL joins, reporting, PostgreSQL portability, or database-level authorization. Choose Firebase when the fastest mobile-first build, Firestore’s built-in offline synchronization, and Google-managed services such as Analytics, Cloud Messaging, and Cloud Functions matter most. Firebase SQL Connect changes the comparison for structured data: it provides PostgreSQL semantics inside Firebase’s managed ecosystem. Your decision should therefore be based on data shape, offline requirements, authorization, ecosystem needs, portability, and how you want to forecast cost—not on a blanket claim that one platform is universally better.
What are Supabase and Firebase in a Flutter architecture?
Both platforms provide a managed backend so a Flutter app can authenticate users, store data and files, run server-side code, and receive live updates without operating every server yourself. Their core architectural choices are different, and that difference affects schema design, security, offline behavior, scaling, and migration.
Supabase: PostgreSQL at the center
Supabase describes itself as an open-source backend built around PostgreSQL. A project includes a Postgres database, autogenerated REST and GraphQL APIs, authentication, object storage, realtime subscriptions, and edge/server functions. Tables, foreign keys, indexes, views, SQL functions, and transactions are first-class features rather than add-ons.

Firebase: a managed Google platform with several data choices
Firebase is Google’s managed backend platform. Flutter’s official Firebase guidance covers Cloud Firestore, Firebase SQL Connect, Cloud Storage, Authentication, crash reporting, AI features, Remote Config, and static-file hosting, along with the plugins that connect those services to Flutter.
Cloud Firestore remains Firebase’s traditional default database: a document store organized into collections and documents. Firebase SQL Connect is now the relevant Firebase option when your application needs structured relational data backed by PostgreSQL. In practice, the database decision is Supabase Postgres versus Firebase’s choice between Firestore and SQL Connect.
Which database model fits a Flutter app?
Use Supabase or Firebase SQL Connect for connected relational records; use Firestore when document-shaped data and rapid mobile iteration are more important than joins and centralized SQL reporting. Model the data before choosing the SDK, because changing the database model later is usually more work than changing a client package.
When Supabase Postgres is the better fit
- Relational business data: Orders, products, inventory, bookings, teams, memberships, invoices, and permissions naturally reference one another through foreign keys.
- Joins and reporting: SQL can combine related tables, aggregate results, filter by complex conditions, and expose reusable views without copying the same data into multiple documents.
- Transactions: Multi-row updates can be handled with database transactions when an operation must succeed or fail as one unit.
- Database-level authorization: Row-level security (RLS) policies can evaluate the authenticated user against rows and related tables in SQL.
- Portability: A standard PostgreSQL foundation is easier to move, inspect, back up, or extend outside one vendor’s application layer.
When Cloud Firestore is the better fit
- Feed-shaped or document-shaped screens: A post, chat message, profile, or activity item can often be read as one document without joins.
- Rapidly changing prototypes: Flexible JSON-like documents let a team evolve fields without designing a complete relational schema first.
- Mobile synchronization: Firestore’s client SDK handles local persistence and synchronization for supported mobile platforms, reducing the amount of sync infrastructure your team must create.
The trade-off is that relational reporting in Firestore often requires denormalized copies, several reads, or additional backend code. Denormalization can be effective, but every duplicated value creates update and consistency work.
When Firebase SQL Connect deserves consideration
Firebase SQL Connect is the Firebase route for structured relational workloads. It is worth evaluating when you need PostgreSQL semantics but also want the surrounding Firebase ecosystem and Google-managed operations. Do not assume that choosing Firebase automatically means choosing Firestore; confirm which Firebase database product matches your schema and Flutter requirements.
How do offline data and realtime updates differ?
Firestore has the clearest built-in offline-first story for Flutter mobile apps. Supabase provides realtime database events, but you generally design the local cache, write queue, and conflict policy yourself.
Firestore offline synchronization
Flutter’s Firebase documentation describes Cloud Firestore as providing realtime updates, local caching, and offline reads and writes on Android and Apple platforms. When connectivity is unavailable, supported operations can be queued locally and synchronized after the device reconnects. That behavior is valuable for field-service tools, chat, collaborative lists, and applications used in unreliable networks.
Offline support does not remove the need for product decisions. You still need to decide what happens when two devices edit the same field, whether the last write wins, how to show pending changes, and how to handle authentication expiry. Firestore gives you the synchronization mechanism; your application still defines acceptable conflict behavior.

Supabase realtime with an application-managed cache
Supabase Realtime can stream changes from Postgres to Flutter clients. This is attractive when events must reflect relational inserts, updates, and deletes governed by SQL policies. However, an offline-first Supabase app normally needs an explicit local database or cache, an operation queue, retry rules, and conflict resolution.
If your app only needs live updates while connected, Supabase subscriptions may be sufficient. If users must continue reading and editing for long periods without a network, estimate the engineering effort for that synchronization layer before selecting Supabase.
Which platform handles authentication and authorization best?
Supabase keeps identity-linked authorization close to relational data through SQL row-level security; Firebase uses Authentication with Security Rules across its managed services. Both support common email and social sign-in flows, so the deciding factor is where you want permission logic to live.
Supabase Auth and row-level security
Supabase Auth is connected to the project’s Postgres database. You can write RLS policies that allow a user to read or modify only rows belonging to that user, team, organization, or role. Because policies operate beside tables and relationships, rules for multi-tenant systems can use the same relational model as the application data.
RLS must be enabled and tested deliberately. A policy that is too broad can expose records; a policy that is too restrictive can make legitimate queries appear empty. Test anonymous, authenticated, member, administrator, and cross-tenant cases rather than relying on client-side checks.
Firebase Authentication and Security Rules
Firebase Authentication supplies the identity used by Firestore and Cloud Storage Security Rules. This is practical when the app already uses Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, analytics, messaging, or other Firebase services, because access decisions can be expressed within the same managed platform.
Enterprise SAML/OIDC and some advanced identity capabilities can depend on Firebase Identity Platform plan choices. Confirm the current plan, regional availability, and identity-provider terms before committing an enterprise rollout.

Supabase Storage and Edge Functions
Supabase Storage is integrated with the platform’s Postgres-oriented authorization model. Storage access can be coordinated with database identities and policies rather than maintained as a completely separate permission system. Edge Functions run on Deno and can call Supabase services for webhooks, protected APIs, validation, and other server-side tasks.
Cloud Storage and Cloud Functions
Firebase Cloud Storage is backed by Google Cloud Storage. Cloud Functions integrate with Firestore, Authentication, Storage, HTTP requests, scheduled jobs, and other Google services. If your product relies on event triggers, scheduled processing, push messaging, analytics, or Google Cloud integrations, this breadth can outweigh the appeal of a unified SQL stack.
How do you integrate either backend with Flutter?
Start with one backend client, keep credentials out of source control, and let the database enforce access instead of trusting widget code. SDK names and capabilities change, so verify the package version and supported platforms during implementation.
Supabase for Flutter: a sensible setup sequence
- Create the project and schema. Define tables, relationships, indexes, and the roles your app needs before writing screens. Enable RLS on exposed tables and write policies for each access pattern.
- Add the client package. The official Flutter quickstart uses the
supabase_flutterpackage. Add it to the app, then initialize one Supabase client during application startup. - Load configuration safely. Supply the project URL and client key through the platform’s configuration mechanism or build-time environment values. Do not commit secret server keys to a Flutter bundle; anything shipped to a client should be treated as public.
- Authenticate before protected queries. Sign users in, observe auth-state changes, and only then call tables or storage paths that require an authenticated identity.
- Query through the database API. A typical read uses the initialized client to select from a table. Keep data-access code in repositories or services so UI widgets are not coupled to raw queries.
- Add subscriptions selectively. Subscribe only to tables and filters the screen needs, unsubscribe when a view is disposed, and test behavior after reconnects.
- Test policies with real roles. Verify that a user cannot read another tenant’s rows by changing a client-side identifier or replaying a request.
await Supabase.initialize(
url: const String.fromEnvironment('SUPABASE_URL'),
anonKey: const String.fromEnvironment('SUPABASE_ANON_KEY'),
);
final rows = await Supabase.instance.client
.from('projects')
.select();
The example shows the client shape, not a substitute for RLS. The database policy remains the security boundary.
Firebase Flutter integration: a sensible setup sequence
- Create a Firebase project and register each Flutter target. Android, iOS, web, and desktop may require separate configuration files or capabilities.
- Choose the database deliberately. Select Cloud Firestore for document-oriented workloads and built-in mobile synchronization, or evaluate Firebase SQL Connect for relational requirements.
- Configure FlutterFire. Use the current FlutterFire setup guidance and generated platform options rather than hand-copying credentials between targets.
- Initialize Firebase before using plugins. Initialize the generated platform options in
mainbefore calling Firestore, Authentication, Storage, or other Firebase services. - Write Security Rules before shipping data. Rules should test the authenticated user, document fields, ownership, and any tenant or role constraints.
- Use streams where screens need live data. Firestore snapshots can drive a Flutter stream, while local persistence and queued writes support offline behavior on supported mobile platforms.
- Connect server work to the right trigger. Use Cloud Functions for protected HTTP endpoints, database events, scheduled work, or integrations that should not run in the client.
await Firebase.initializeApp(
options: DefaultFirebaseOptions.currentPlatform,
);
final stream = FirebaseFirestore.instance
.collection('projects')
.snapshots();
Keep Firebase configuration files and rules aligned across environments. A development rule that allows broad access is not a safe production default.
Which backend is cheaper and easier to scale?
Neither platform has a permanently cheaper price. Supabase commonly frames capacity through plan quotas and resources, while Firebase commonly bills usage such as document operations, storage, bandwidth, and function invocations after free quotas. The examples below are dated reference figures, not guarantees; pricing, included limits, and regional conditions change.
| Planning question | Supabase consideration | Firebase consideration |
|---|---|---|
| What is metered? | Plan resources such as database capacity, file storage, bandwidth, and compute quotas. | Usage such as Firestore document reads and writes, storage, bandwidth, and function invocations after applicable free quotas. |
| Dated free-plan example | The Supabase comparison page cited 50,000 monthly active users, 500 MB database storage, 1 GB file storage, and 5 GB bandwidth in 2025. | The cited Firebase example listed 50,000 Firestore reads per day, 20,000 writes per day, and 5 GB Firebase Storage in select regions in 2025. |
| Forecasting risk | Resource limits can be easier to model when workload size is known, but database, bandwidth, and compute overages still require monitoring. | A small change in query patterns, listeners, retries, or fan-out can increase billable operations, so traffic and read/write behavior must be measured. |
| Operations | Managed hosting is available, with self-hosting and portability options for teams that want more control. | Google-managed operations reduce infrastructure work, but the application is more closely tied to Firebase and Google service choices. |
Do not compare the numbers as if a monthly active user allowance were equivalent to daily document operations. Estimate your own authenticated users, reads, writes, file volume, bandwidth, function calls, realtime connections, and retention period, then check the current calculators and regional terms immediately before launch.

What are the main trade-offs at a glance?
| Decision axis | Prefer Supabase when… | Prefer Firebase when… |
|---|---|---|
| Data shape | You need relational tables, joins, transactions, or SQL reporting. | You need document collections, feed-shaped data, or rapidly evolving records. |
| Offline-first behavior | You can build and own a deliberate cache, queue, and conflict strategy. | Built-in Firestore mobile offline persistence is a central requirement. |
| Authorization | SQL row-level security should sit beside Postgres data and relationships. | Firebase Security Rules should govern Firestore, Storage, and related managed services. |
| Ecosystem | PostgreSQL extensions, open-source components, and database portability matter. | Google services, Flutter plugins, analytics, messaging, and managed integrations matter. |
| Portability | You may self-host or move a PostgreSQL database later. | You prefer fully managed Google-hosted operations and accept tighter platform coupling. |
| Cost planning | Quota and resource planning is easier to forecast for your workload. | Usage-based billing is acceptable and traffic patterns are predictable. |

- Draw the hardest data relationship. If the core workflow needs joins among users, organizations, permissions, inventory, and transactions, start with Supabase Postgres or Firebase SQL Connect.
- Mark offline requirements by screen. If users must create and edit records without connectivity, Firestore has an implementation advantage. If only a few screens need cached reads, a Supabase cache may be manageable.
- Write the authorization rule in plain language. “A member can read rows for their organization but never another organization” maps naturally to SQL RLS or Firebase Rules; choose the model your team can test and maintain.
- List required Google services. Analytics, Crash reporting, Remote Config, Cloud Messaging, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Storage may make Firebase integration more efficient.
- Test the riskiest query and sync path. Build a small vertical slice with production-like relationships, permissions, reconnects, and error handling before committing the whole app.
- Model a year of usage. Include reads caused by listeners, retries, background refresh, image delivery, database growth, and scheduled functions rather than estimating only active users.
- Decide how much vendor control you need. If self-hosting, PostgreSQL portability, or inspection of the underlying database is important, give Supabase greater weight. If managed operations are the priority, Firebase may be the simpler choice.
What migration and lock-in issues should you plan for?
Both choices create migration work, but the work is different: Firestore migrations usually involve redesigning documents and query logic, while Supabase migrations are more likely to involve moving a standard relational schema and rewriting service-specific APIs.
Moving from Firestore
Exported documents do not automatically become a well-designed relational schema. You may need to identify entities, replace denormalized fields with foreign keys, rebuild indexes and reports, rewrite Security Rules as RLS policies, and replace offline assumptions. Preserve document IDs and timestamps where they have business meaning, and migrate in stages with a read-only or dual-write period if downtime is unacceptable.
Moving from Supabase
PostgreSQL tables, constraints, and SQL queries are portable concepts, but Supabase-specific Auth, Storage policies, generated APIs, Realtime subscriptions, and Edge Functions still need equivalents elsewhere. Keep schema migrations in version control and isolate platform calls behind application services so a future move does not require rewriting every widget.

Switching from Firestore to Firebase SQL Connect is not a configuration toggle. It changes query semantics, schema design, authorization, offline behavior, and the Flutter data-access layer. Treat it as a migration project even though the surrounding Firebase account and services may remain.
What pitfalls cause backend projects to fail?
Choosing Firestore for relational reporting
If a product roadmap already includes cross-entity reports, complex filters, or permission-heavy joins, model those requirements before committing to collections and denormalized copies. Otherwise, reporting logic can spread across multiple queries and functions.
Assuming realtime means offline
A live subscription only describes connected event delivery. Test airplane mode, process termination, reconnects, duplicate submissions, stale credentials, and conflicting edits on the actual Flutter platforms you support.
Relying on client-side authorization
Hiding a button or filtering a list in Dart is not access control. Enforce the rule in Supabase RLS or Firebase Security Rules, then add tests that attempt unauthorized reads and writes directly through the client API.
Ignoring query and listener costs
Broad collection reads, unbounded Postgres selects, frequent rebuilds, and listeners that remain active after navigation can affect both performance and billing. Paginate, select only needed columns or fields, scope subscriptions, and release them with the screen lifecycle.

Hard-coding credentials or environment assumptions
Client applications can be inspected. Keep privileged keys and administrative operations on trusted server code, use separate development and production projects, and verify platform configuration for every Flutter target.
Skipping compatibility checks
Flutter plugins and backend capabilities evolve. Check current package support, authentication behavior, platform requirements, and database feature coverage during implementation rather than assuming a tutorial’s versions still apply.
What should you choose?
Pick Supabase when PostgreSQL relationships, SQL reporting, transactions, RLS, self-hosting, or portability are central to the product. Pick Firebase with Firestore when built-in mobile offline synchronization and Google-managed integrations offer the fastest route to a reliable app. Pick Firebase SQL Connect when you need relational PostgreSQL semantics but want to stay inside Firebase’s managed ecosystem. Validate the decision with a small production-shaped prototype and current pricing and compatibility limits before building the full Flutter application.

Can I use Supabase and Firebase in the same Flutter app?
Yes, but define ownership clearly. For example, one service might handle authentication or messaging while another owns the primary database; duplicate identities, security policies, error handling, and billing can make a mixed architecture harder to operate than either platform alone.
Does Supabase have an equivalent to Firestore’s offline persistence?
Supabase provides realtime subscriptions, not an identical turnkey mobile offline queue. An offline-first implementation generally adds a local store, queued mutations, retry behavior, and conflict resolution, so estimate that work per screen.
Do I need to know SQL to build a Flutter app with Supabase?
You can start with generated APIs and a dashboard, but useful production work benefits from SQL knowledge for relationships, indexes, transactions, views, and RLS policies. Teams that prefer document queries may find Firestore easier at first.
Is Firebase SQL Connect the same product as Supabase?
No. Both can use PostgreSQL concepts, but they are separate managed products with different SDKs, authorization systems, operations, pricing, and integration surfaces. Evaluate the exact Firebase SQL Connect capabilities and Flutter support for your workload.
