Yes—if your lawn is no larger than about 1,000 m² (0.25 acre), has awkward beds or obstacles, and you are willing to manage maps in an app. The Sunseeker S4 combines boundary-free 3D LiDAR and Vision AI navigation with schedules, multiple zones and no-go areas. It is less convincing as a complete “never touch the lawn again” solution: the rated area is a ceiling rather than a guarantee, longer first cuts can require repeated charging, and the blades leave a perimeter strip that still needs a trimmer. Independent testing found straightforward setup and reliable obstacle avoidance, but also required map corrections, a change to cutting direction to remove missed strips, and a temporary shutdown after standing water. This review separates those observed results from Sunseeker’s specifications and claims so you can judge whether the S4 suits your yard.

What is the Sunseeker S4, and who is it for?

The S4 is a wire-free robotic lawn mower designed for relatively small, complicated gardens. Instead of a buried perimeter cable or a permanently installed positioning antenna, it builds a virtual map with 3D LiDAR-SLAM and VSLAM (vision-based simultaneous localization and mapping). You set schedules, zones and exclusion areas in the companion app, then the mower follows that map while its sensors identify obstacles.

Sunseeker positions the S4 for “tighter, obstacle-filled, more complex yards where smart mapping matters.” That description fits a small lawn divided by paths, trees, beds or play equipment better than a broad, open estate. The manufacturer rates it for a maximum mowing area of 1,000 m² (0.25 acre); that is a coverage rating, not a promise that every quarter-acre lawn will be cut in one charge or on the same schedule. Grass growth, slope, layout, weather and how often you run it all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The S4 is a poor match for a property larger than that rating, an owner who does not want to use app-based mapping and zone management, or a lawn that needs an overgrown first cut. It is also not an all-wheel-drive model, so steep or loose terrain deserves more caution than the headline slope figure suggests.

How does the S4 navigate without boundary wire?

The mower combines a roof-mounted 3D LiDAR view with cameras and software-based mapping. Sunseeker’s US product page claims more than 210,000 point clouds per second, a 360° × 70° sensing view and detection out to 50 m. Those are manufacturer figures describing the sensing system, not independent measurements of cutting accuracy.

During setup, the S4 can create a map automatically or let you guide the boundary manually from the app. The resulting map can contain separate work areas, passageways and no-go zones. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are listed in the manual; GPS and 4G are optional rather than core requirements for the basic mower.

In Tom’s Guide’s month-long test, initial mapping was straightforward after the dock was placed near a weather-protected outlet. Some parts of a two-yard setup still needed manual correction, although the reviewer found the process smoother than his previous experience with another wire-free mower. Treat that as a realistic expectation: “wire-free” removes the installation of boundary cable, but it does not remove the need to inspect and edit the virtual map.

What are the S4’s specifications?

The figures below come from the indexed EU manual for model RMR1001M20V. Regional versions can differ, so verify the specification plate and local manual before ordering.

Specification Sunseeker S4 value What it means in practice
Maximum mowing area 1,000 m² / 0.25 acre A manufacturer coverage limit; actual completion time depends on grass, layout and schedule.
Cutting width 180 mm A relatively narrow deck suits intricate areas but requires more passes than a wider commercial mower.
Cutting height 20–60 mm, manually adjustable Set the height on the mower; the manual does not describe automatic height adjustment.
Battery 4 Ah Do not interpret the capacity alone as a guaranteed runtime.
Maximum slope 42% (22°) A stated limit under the manufacturer’s conditions; traction, wet grass and surface texture can reduce practical capability.
Sound power 60 dB(A) The manual’s sound-power rating, not a promise of an identical reading at your property line.
Weight 11 kg Relevant when carrying the mower between areas or storing it.
Sensors and connectivity 3D LiDAR-SLAM, VSLAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, rain and lift/tilt sensors; optional GPS/4G Core mapping does not require an optional cellular module.

How do you install and map the S4?

Plan on a short physical installation followed by an app-mapping session. The exact screens can change with firmware, but the practical sequence is:

  1. Choose the dock. Put it on a level, well-drained surface with a weatherproof power outlet and enough clear approach space for the mower to enter and leave.
  2. Charge before mapping. Seat the S4 on the station and let it reach a useful charge so a mapping run is not interrupted immediately.
  3. Pair the mower. Use Bluetooth for local setup and connect it to your Wi-Fi through the companion app. Keep the phone close until pairing completes.
  4. Start automatic mapping or guide the boundary. Automatic mapping is convenient; manual guidance is useful around narrow gates, overhangs or edges that the sensors interpret conservatively.
  5. Walk the map. Check that every grass section is included, that passageways are wide enough, and that patios, ponds, play areas and tree-root zones are excluded.
  6. Save separate zones. Give each lawn section a clear name and set a schedule appropriate to its growth rate. The mower can manage multiple zones, but each additional zone increases the importance of an accurate map.
  7. Run a supervised test. Watch the first complete route, especially at ramps, tight corners and transitions between grass and paving. Edit the map rather than repeatedly forcing the mower through a location it cannot safely interpret.

Remove toys, hoses, branches and other movable objects before the first run. The S4’s obstacle avoidance can reduce collisions, but it is not a substitute for a tidy mowing area or for protecting objects that could be damaged by a blade deck.

How well does it cut and avoid obstacles?

Independent testing was positive about basic navigation but exposed several limits that matter more than the feature list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Obstacle handling

Tom’s Guide’s reviewer reported that the mower avoided a dog and small yard objects during testing. That is an observed result in one property, not a guarantee for every animal, object color, lighting condition or camera angle. Keep pets and people away from the mower during initial supervised runs, and do not rely on obstacle detection to protect fingers, loose cables or very small objects.

Cutting pattern

The default direction left narrow rows between passes in the test lawn. Switching to a direction-changing setting eliminated those missed strips for that yard. If you see parallel bands of taller grass, change the pattern or direction setting before assuming the blades or motor are defective.

Edges and borders

The reviewer still found an uncut border because the blades sit several inches inward from the mower’s outer shell. Even with a perfect virtual boundary, expect occasional hand trimming around walls, raised beds, fences and drop-offs. The S4 reduces routine mowing; it does not provide true edge-to-edge finishing.

Long grass and charging stops

The initial cut of longer grass required roughly 90-minute mowing sessions and several returns to the dock. Once the lawn was under regular maintenance, the backyard took just under two hours of mowing, with a charging stop adding time. These are observations from one test yard, not a rated runtime or a universal quarter-acre completion time. Starting with a manually shortened lawn and then running frequent maintenance cycles should give the mower an easier workload than asking it to clear neglected growth.

Can the S4 handle slopes, shade and wet conditions?

The manual’s maximum slope is 42% (22°), but the S4 is not all-wheel drive. A smooth, dry incline may be manageable while wet turf, loose soil, roots or abrupt transitions reduce traction. If your lawn’s steepest sections are also shaded or damp, test them under supervision and consider whether rough-terrain wheels, listed among the official accessories, are appropriate for your regional model.

The LiDAR and camera combination is intended to provide a wide sensing view, yet the supplied evidence does not establish identical performance in deep shade, glare, fog or heavy rain. Map shaded passages carefully and watch the first routes at the time of day when you normally plan to mow.

The S4 includes a rain sensor and is marketed with an IPX6 rating. In testing, however, the mower stopped after a storm left standing water in the yard and resumed only after drying. IPX6 does not mean the machine can operate while submerged or in pooled water. Follow the manual’s weather guidance, improve drainage where possible, and do not leave the mower in a flooded area.

What does the S4 cost, and why can prices differ?

On October 25, 2026, Sunseeker’s direct shop displayed a sale price of $1,279.99 against a $1,799.99 reference price. Tom’s Guide’s review page showed a different Amazon offer of $984 in its July 2, 2026 text. Both are time-stamped snapshots, not a current guaranteed price. The manual’s accessory inventory includes six spare blades and screws. Confirm the part number, regional compatibility and what is included in your box before paying for an add-on.

What are the S4’s main advantages and drawbacks?

Advantages Drawbacks and trade-offs
Boundary-free mapping avoids burying perimeter wire. Mapping still requires app setup, inspection and occasional manual correction.
LiDAR and Vision AI can plan around complex layouts and obstacles. Performance in unusual lighting, clutter or wet terrain is not established by broad independent testing.
Multiple zones, schedules and no-go areas suit divided gardens. Owners who dislike app-based management may find the workflow burdensome.
Quiet operation is specified at 60 dB(A) sound power. The 1,000 m² rating is a ceiling, and charging returns extend long or dense cuts.
Manual height range of 20–60 mm covers common residential preferences. Blades remain recessed, so perimeter trimming is still likely.
Optional GPS/4G and accessory choices allow later expansion. The mower is not all-wheel drive and is unsuitable for standing water or neglected first cuts.

How does the S4 compare with other robot-mower approaches?

The useful comparison is not a brand-to-brand score; it is whether the navigation and workload match your property.

Decision factor S4 approach What to check in an alternative
Boundary setup Virtual boundaries created with LiDAR and vision Whether it uses perimeter wire, RTK, camera-only mapping or another method, and how much installation each requires
Coverage Rated up to 1,000 m² / 0.25 acre Maximum area under the maker’s stated conditions, plus realistic charging behavior
Terrain 42% / 22° stated maximum; not AWD Drive configuration, traction accessories and wet-slope guidance
Mapping workload App schedules, zones and no-go areas Whether maps can be edited easily and recovered after changes to the yard
Obstacle behavior 3D LiDAR and Vision AI, with obstacle avoidance claimed by the manufacturer Independent evidence for pets, small objects, shade and low-contrast obstacles
Edges Expect a residual strip because blades sit inward Blade offset, edge-cutting mode and the amount of hand trimming required
Connectivity and support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth included; GPS/4G optional What works without cellular service, accessory prices and local support

Sunseeker’s own guide contrasts the S4’s quarter-acre, non-AWD design with larger X7 models rated for more area and steeper slopes. That is a lineup claim, not independent validation, but it clarifies the intended split: choose the S4 for compact complexity rather than maximum acreage or aggressive terrain.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What maintenance will the S4 need?

Keep the underside, wheels and sensors free of packed grass and mud, and inspect the blade area regularly. Before cleaning, power the mower down and follow the manual’s handling instructions; do not spray water into charging contacts or electronics. Replace damaged or dull blades with parts confirmed for the S4 variant, and retighten fasteners as specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the dock approach clear and check that the charging-station cable has not shifted. After storms, inspect for pooled water before allowing an automatic departure. If the mower returns repeatedly without covering a zone, first inspect the map and route, then check for low battery, blocked passages or wheel slip rather than assuming a software fault.

Is the Sunseeker S4 worth it for a small lawn?

The S4 makes the strongest case when a conventional boundary-wire installation would be awkward and your lawn is comfortably below 1,000 m². LiDAR/vision mapping, editable zones and obstacle avoidance can reduce the daily work of a complicated garden, and the test experience suggests setup is approachable once you supervise the first map.

It is not the right purchase if you expect one charge to clear a neglected quarter-acre, demand perfectly trimmed borders, have frequent standing water, or do not want to maintain an app map. The practical ownership pattern is “automated mowing plus occasional supervision, charging pauses and edge trimming,” not total elimination of lawn care. Buy only after checking the live regional price, local specification, accessory compatibility and the shape and drainage of your own yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Sunseeker S4 specifications the same in every country?

No. The published figures above come from the EU manual for model RMR1001M20V, while regional packages and ratings can differ. Check the manual and product label for your country before relying on the area, slope, battery or connectivity figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is GPS or 4G included with the standard S4?

The manual lists GPS and 4G as optional capabilities, while Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are part of the listed connectivity. Treat a cellular module as an add-on that needs separate regional compatibility and pricing confirmation, not as a guaranteed in-box feature.

What spare parts and accessories are available for the S4?

Sunseeker’s official product navigation lists a 4G module, blade set, charging-station extension cable, garage, cleaning kits and rough-terrain wheels. The manual inventory mentions six spare blades and screws; verify the exact part number and regional fit before ordering.

Can the S4 mow safely after heavy rain?

An IPX6 rating does not make the mower suitable for pooled or standing water. A test unit stopped after water stood in the yard and recovered after drying, so inspect drainage and postpone automatic mowing until the route is clear and safely passable.

Will the S4 work in a heavily shaded garden?

The mower’s LiDAR and vision system is designed to sense its surroundings, but the available independent test does not establish identical accuracy in every shade, glare or weather condition. Map shaded passages carefully and supervise an early run at the time you intend to mow.
