Andoo displays one separate 4/5 review praising the digital display and saying the toaster met the reviewer’s needs. The 1,800 W rating is the toaster’s listed electrical load, not a measurement of the energy used during every cycle. It also means the appliance should be used with an outlet and power arrangement suitable for a high-wattage kitchen appliance.
What settings and controls does the toaster have?
The TA6440DS’s interface is its defining feature. Instead of a simple lever and dial, it combines electronic browning selection with a display and dedicated buttons for common bread conditions.
Six electronic browning levels
Levels 1 through 6 let you choose a lighter or darker cycle electronically. The manual advises selecting a lower setting when toasting one slice. Bread moisture, thickness and type also change the time required, so the same number may not produce identical colour on different loaves.
LCD countdown and QuickCheck
The LCD shows the remaining time as the cycle runs. QuickCheck lets you raise the carriage briefly to inspect progress without cancelling the program, then continue the cycle if more browning is needed. Frozen/defrost

Reheat
Reheat is a short warming cycle for toast that has cooled. It is separate from browning control and is intended to warm rather than produce a fresh dark crust.
Crumpet mode
Crumpet mode applies extra heat to the centre elements. The purpose is to cook the crumpet’s top while reducing the chance of burning the bottom. Because crumpets vary in moisture and thickness, the first cycle should be monitored rather than treated as a guaranteed result.
High lift and self-centring slots
The carriage raises smaller items higher than a standard lift, making them easier to remove. Self-centring guides hold slices in the middle of each slot; this is intended to keep the bread aligned with the heating elements.
Does the TA6440DS toast evenly?

How do you use the main TA6440DS programs?
Use the controls as an adjustment process rather than assuming the number on the display is universal for every loaf.
- Place slices centrally in the two slots. The self-centring guides are designed to hold thick or thin bread in the middle.
- Select a browning level from 1 to 6. For a single slice, the manual advises using a lower setting.
- Press the normal start control and watch the LCD countdown during the cycle.
- Use QuickCheck when you want to inspect colour without ending the cycle. Return the carriage and allow the program to continue if more browning is required.
- For bread straight from the freezer, select frozen/defrost before starting.
- For a cooled piece of toast, choose reheat instead of running another full browning cycle.
- For crumpets, select crumpet mode so the centre elements receive extra heat. Check the first result because crumpet size and moisture affect the outcome.
- When the cycle ends, use high lift for small items. Empty the removable crumb tray regularly.
The manual warns never to free jammed food with a knife or another metal object. A metal utensil can contact live or hot components and create a shock, short-circuit or burn hazard. Disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions rather than probing inside the slots.
Can it toast thick slices, crumpets, frozen bread and bagels?
Thick and thin bread are explicitly addressed by the manual’s self-centring claim, and the toaster has a dedicated crumpet program plus frozen/defrost. The documented controls do not list a separate bagel mode.
- Thick bread: the slots are designed to centre thick slices, but the published material does not give a slot-width measurement or guarantee clearance for every artisan loaf.
- Thin bread: self-centring and high lift should make narrow slices easier to position and retrieve.
- Crumpets: use crumpet mode, which concentrates extra heat toward the centre elements.
- Frozen bread: use frozen/defrost for slices taken directly from the freezer.
- Bagels: no dedicated bagel setting is listed in the documented specifications, so do not assume one-sided bagel heating.
Because bread moisture and composition change toasting time, record the setting that works for your usual loaf rather than transferring a number from another bread type.
How much bench space and power does it need?
The toaster is physically substantial for a domestic appliance. CHOICE lists 42 × 21 × 20 cm, while Appliances Online lists approximately 247 × 244 × 479 mm. The different figures may reflect orientation or measuring points, so measure your available bench area against the specific unit and packaging before purchase. Leave enough clearance for the lever, ventilation and safe handling of hot toast.
At 1,800 W, it has the electrical rating of a high-power countertop appliance. The rating does not say how long each cycle runs or what a household will pay in electricity, but it is relevant when several kitchen appliances share one circuit. Use a sound wall outlet and avoid damaged leads or loose adaptors.

Is the Sunbeam Maestro TA6440DS discontinued?
CHOICE’s comparison page marks the TA6440DS as discontinued and lists a $109 price in its 2026 entry. Andoo says its listing is no longer available, while other retailer pages show out-of-stock or historical-pricing signals. Availability can change when old inventory appears, so confirm that a listing is for the exact TA6440DS model rather than a visually similar toaster.

What warranty does it have?
The Australian warranty is documented as one year and is generally described as replacement coverage by Appliances Online, Andoo and CHOICE. Check the seller’s current terms because a discontinued product may have different handling for clearance, refurbished or second-hand stock.

Who should buy the TA6440DS?
It is best suited to an Australian buyer who finds a genuinely new unit from a seller offering a clear one-year replacement process, wants four slices and will use the countdown, QuickCheck and specialty modes. It is a poor fit for commercial kitchens, buyers who need guaranteed evenness, or anyone unable to return the toaster if the first batches burn on one side.
