Choose the original Subnautica if you want a complete, single-player crash-landing mystery, or if you play on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. Choose Subnautica 2 if optional online co-op for up to four players, cross-platform play and a new alien world matter more than a finished story. Subnautica 2 is already playable: it entered Early Access on May 14, 2026, but it is not a finished 1.0 release. The original reached PC release on January 23, 2018. Your platform, tolerance for unfinished features and interest in playing with friends should decide the purchase.

Which underwater survival game should you play?
The safest recommendation for most first-time players is the original. It has a completed campaign, a known feature set and the broadest console availability. You begin after a crash landing, learn to manage oxygen and resources, build equipment and habitats, and descend into increasingly dangerous regions while uncovering what happened to your ship.
Subnautica 2 is the better fit when your priority is cooperative play or a fresh setting. It can be played alone, but its headline addition is optional online co-op with up to three friends and cross-platform multiplayer. Because it remains in Early Access, its systems, story and performance can change, and unfinished content or bugs are possible.

What is the release status of Subnautica and Subnautica 2?
Subnautica is the finished game in this comparison. Its PC release date was January 23, 2018, and the developer lists versions for Steam, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. The original’s single-player structure means its campaign and progression are not dependent on a live service or a group of friends. Steam’s Subnautica listing documents the released game and its requirements.
Subnautica 2 entered playable Early Access on May 14, 2026. Steam warns that the game may change during development and can contain unfinished features, bugs and performance problems. The store listing anticipates an Early Access period of roughly two to three years, but that is an estimate rather than a guaranteed schedule, and no final 1.0 date has been announced in the official material available for this comparison. Unknown Worlds reported that more than one million copies were sold before the Early Access launch in its May 14, 2026 release. Co-op features shipped in the Buddy System update
Unknown Worlds’ August 19, 2026 version 1.2 Buddy System update added cross-platform proximity voice chat, player revives, emotes, direct inventory trading and two character choices. These are features of the released Early Access build described in the developer’s update, not evidence that the game has reached 1.0. The developer’s update is available at Unknown Worlds’ Buddy System announcement.
An October 6 hotfix addressed voice-chat detection, Tadpole issues and scanner fixes. On October 22, Unknown Worlds previewed a forthcoming story-focused content update. “Forthcoming” matters: a preview is not the same as content already shipped, so check the live patch notes if a particular story feature is important to your decision.
What has not changed
Subnautica 2 is not multiplayer-only. You can play it solo, and the sequel still centers on exploration, survival resources, crafting and discovering an alien environment. The difference is that the systems can now support a shared session, while the development state remains subject to Early Access changes.
Can you play Subnautica 2 without playing Subnautica?
Yes. Unknown Worlds’ support guidance says the sequel’s story takes place in a new world and is designed for players who have not played the previous Subnautica games. You can start with Subnautica 2 without missing a required prologue or needing a completed save from the original.
There is still a practical reason to begin with the first game: it offers a finished introduction to oxygen management, crafting, habitat building and the series’ style of environmental storytelling. That is a recommendation based on fit, not a narrative requirement. Players who mainly want co-op can skip directly to the sequel.
Does Subnautica 2 take place on the same planet?
No. The sequel is described as taking place on a new alien world. The original and Below Zero both revisit Planet 4546B, but Subnautica 2 is not presented as another campaign on that same planet. Its new setting is also why the developer says newcomers can understand its story independently.

Below Zero is a separate game, not a subtitle or mode inside Subnautica 2. It returns to Planet 4546B and should be treated as another entry in the series when you are deciding what to play.
How do the platforms and PC requirements compare?
The platform split may decide the question before features do. The original is listed for Steam, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. The official Subnautica 2 distribution list names Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox; Xbox specifies Series X|S and Windows PC Game Preview. There is no official PlayStation or Switch sequel release to promise at the time covered here.

The sequel’s listed Windows requirements are materially higher. They are store specifications, not independent frame-rate benchmarks, so a minimum-specification computer should not be assumed to deliver a particular resolution or frame rate. What should you know before buying an Early Access game?
Early Access changes the risk calculation. You are buying access to a work in progress, not a promise of a finished game on a fixed date. Updates can add systems, rebalance progression or alter story presentation; bugs and performance regressions can also appear between builds.
Stable versus Experimental on Xbox
Xbox offers an Experimental branch with a higher risk profile. Xbox states that Experimental saves are separate from Stable saves, and Experimental multiplayer players cannot join Stable players. If preserving a long-running save or playing with friends is important, make sure everyone selects the same branch before starting a session.

- Choose Early Access now if you want to help shape development, accept changing content and have friends who can play on compatible platforms.
- Wait for a later build if you want a more settled story, fewer unfinished systems or a clearer picture of final performance.
- Choose the original instead if you want to start and finish a complete campaign today, especially on PlayStation or Switch.
Unknown Worlds’ October project update should therefore be read as a development signal, not a 1.0 announcement. Future narrative material previewed on October 22 should not be described as available until the developer’s release notes confirm it.

Solo newcomer who wants a complete story
Start with Subnautica. Its released campaign teaches the survival systems in a controlled progression and gives you a finished endpoint. You can move to Subnautica 2 later without needing to replay the original for story continuity.
Friends who want to explore together
Pick Subnautica 2, provided everyone accepts Early Access. Its four-player limit, optional co-op and cross-platform support directly address a group-play requirement the original does not meet.
PlayStation or Switch owner
Pick Subnautica. The developer lists those platforms for the original, while the sequel’s official list currently covers PC storefronts and Xbox. Do not buy a physical Switch bundle expecting the sequel.
PC player with modest hardware
The original has the lower published minimums: 4 GB RAM and 20 GB storage. Subnautica 2 lists 12 GB RAM, 50 GB storage and a GTX 1660 6 GB or RX 5500 XT 6 GB, so compare those requirements with your system before purchase. Neither set of minimums is an independent performance guarantee.

Is the Switch physical bundle Subnautica 2?
No. A documented physical Nintendo Switch double pack contains the original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. Nintendo’s current US bundle page is marked Digital, so any physical listing should be checked for format, region and seller before purchase. Neither version should be described as a Subnautica 2 cartridge.
Below Zero also has had physical console editions, but that adjacent release does not change Subnautica 2’s official distribution list. The sequel is listed through Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox rather than as a physical console package.
