Start with Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones if you want the series’ most traditional Lovecraftian role-playing experience. It focuses on dialogue, character archetypes, sanity, companions, choices and turn-based tactical combat. Play Stygian: Outer Gods first only if your priority is a newer first-person survival-horror game built around exploration, action, stealth and crafting.

There is no confirmed mandatory story order. The official store listings identify both games as part of the Stygian franchise and offer a bundle, but they do not establish whether Outer Gods is a direct sequel, prequel or separate side story. Choose by gameplay and hardware rather than assuming that release order is canonical.

Which Stygian game should you play first?

For most readers, Reign of the Old Ones is the better first game because it establishes Stygian’s role-playing identity: build a character, choose beliefs, manage sanity, recruit unusual companions and resolve encounters through dialogue or turn-based combat. Its listed PC requirements are also far lower.

Choose Outer Gods first when you specifically want a first-person survival-horror format with modern presentation, exploration, stealth, crafting and more immediate action. It is the newer release, but its substantially higher hardware requirements make it a less practical recommendation for modest PCs.

What are the two Stygian games?

The games share a franchise and publisher but are built around different genres. Reign of the Old Ones, released on 26 September 2019, is a narrative-driven horror CRPG from Cultic Games. Outer Gods, released on 26 October 2026, is a first-person survival-horror game with RPG elements from Misterial Games. Both are published by Fulqrum Publishing.

Question Reign of the Old Ones Outer Gods

Developer Cultic Games Misterial Games
Core format Narrative horror CRPG with turn-based tactical combat First-person survival horror with RPG elements
Main appeal Dialogue, character builds, sanity, companions and deliberate choices Exploration, action, stealth, crafting and contemporary horror presentation

Why start with Reign of the Old Ones?

Reign is the clearest choice if “Lovecraftian RPG” is the key phrase in your search. Its official description calls it a narrative-driven horror CRPG inspired by the pen-and-paper Call of Cthulhu and H.P. Lovecraft’s fiction. The systems are designed around authored role-playing rather than simply surviving a sequence of action set pieces.

It offers deeper character-role decisions

You select among eight character archetypes and shape the protagonist through beliefs and choices. Those decisions can influence dialogue, the way sanity is recovered, which actions are available and what happens to companions. That makes the character sheet part of the narrative instead of a thin layer over combat.

The result is a game for readers who enjoy deciding what their investigator believes, fears or refuses to do. A conversation can be as important as a fight, and the game’s premise allows avoidance to be the sensible role-playing choice when an opponent is too dangerous.

Its sanity system is central, not decorative

Sanity is tied to the game’s fiction and to practical play. Encounters with the unnatural can affect what your character can do, how recovery works and how situations are interpreted. If you want psychological pressure represented through RPG rules, Reign is the stronger match.

Turn-based combat rewards deliberation

Combat is tactical and turn-based, which gives you time to consider positioning, abilities, equipment and whether a confrontation is worth the cost. This is a better fit for players who prefer planning to reflexes. It is not necessarily a smoother fit for everyone: Cameron Kunzelman’s 2019 Wireframe review praised the atmosphere, saying the game “perfectly captures the otherworldly tone of Lovecraftian fiction,” while criticizing the combat as clunky and unbalanced and scoring it 63%.

Its presentation is more literary and illustrative

Reign feels closer to a tabletop campaign filtered through a 2D, illustrated CRPG structure than to a first-person haunted-house game. That presentation gives dialogue, text and setting details room to carry the horror. It also explains why players seeking constant physical immersion may prefer Outer Gods instead.

Why start with Outer Gods?

Outer Gods is the better opening choice when you want to inhabit the environment directly. Steam classifies it with survival-horror, first-person, action, stealth, crafting, mystery and RPG tags, and its store description emphasizes survival pressure, sanity, decisions and confronting the Outer Gods.

It changes the moment-to-moment rhythm

Instead of directing a party through primarily menu-driven encounters, you explore from a first-person viewpoint and deal with danger through movement, observation, stealth, action and resource decisions. Crafting adds another layer to preparation. This structure is closer to a modern survival-horror campaign than to a traditional party CRPG.

That does not make it “more” or “less” role-playing in every sense. It offers RPG elements, but Reign gives more explicit attention to archetypes, companions, belief systems and dialogue outcomes. Pick Outer Gods for embodied exploration and tension; pick Reign for authored character identity.

It has the stronger case for modern horror presentation

Players who find turn-based combat too slow or who want to search spaces themselves will likely connect with Outer Gods more quickly. Its first-person viewpoint and survival mechanics put immediate pressure on movement and resource use. The trade-off is that the game asks considerably more from a gaming PC.

Is Outer Gods a sequel to Reign of the Old Ones?

The available official listings do not answer that question. They confirm a shared Stygian franchise and a bundle containing both games, but they do not label Outer Gods as a direct sequel, prequel or standalone side story.

Therefore, do not buy either game on the assumption that you must understand a particular plot first. Release order is useful as a way to experience the franchise’s earlier CRPG foundation before its newer first-person direction, but it is not confirmed canon order. If avoiding possible references matters to you, beginning with the 2019 release is the conservative choice; if format matters more, start with the game whose mechanics you actually want.

Which game is easier for a modest PC?

Reign of the Old Ones is the safer choice for older or entry-level hardware. Its Steam listing specifies 2 GB of minimum RAM and 5 GB of storage, while Outer Gods lists a Windows 10 64-bit system, 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 3050/RX 6600-class graphics card or equivalent, DirectX 12 and 25 GB of storage as minimum requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Outer Gods minimum Outer Gods recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Not separately specified in the cited listing
Memory 16 GB RAM 32 GB RAM
Graphics RTX 3050/RX 6600-class or equivalent RTX 3080/RX 6800 XT-class
Graphics API DirectX 12 DirectX 12
Storage 25 GB 25 GB

The recommended specification rises to 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080/RX 6800 XT-class GPU. These are the publisher’s listed targets, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. Check your system against the minimum before buying, and leave additional free space for updates if your storage is tight.

How do reception and review evidence compare?

Steam’s 2026 snapshots show 66% positive from 1,807 user reviews for Reign of the Old Ones and 77% positive from 572 reviews for Outer Gods overall. The newer game’s recent-review window was lower at 53% positive from 56 reviews in the same snapshot. Those figures are time-sensitive: review totals, percentages, prices and availability can change.

The review evidence points to different strengths rather than a simple winner. Reign has a published critic score of 63% from Wireframe in 2019, with atmosphere praised and combat criticized. User scores for Outer Gods should be read cautiously because its release is recent and the review pool is smaller; the gap between its overall and recent percentages also shows why a single percentage should not substitute for reading current comments.

Which Stygian game is more like a real RPG?

Reign of the Old Ones is the more traditional RPG by a wide margin. It puts archetypes, beliefs, dialogue checks, sanity, companions, choices and turn-based encounters at the center of play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outer Gods still has RPG elements, but its identity is survival horror first. Character progression and decisions support exploration, stealth, crafting and action rather than replacing them. Choose Reign if you want to role-play a defined investigator; choose Outer Gods if you want RPG mechanics layered onto a first-person horror adventure.

Which game should different players choose?

  1. You want Lovecraftian investigation and dialogue: Start with Reign of the Old Ones. Its explicit connection to Call of Cthulhu and Lovecraft’s work, plus its belief and sanity systems, make it the closer fit.
  2. You want turn-based tactical combat: Start with Reign. Expect deliberate decisions and accept that the cited review found the combat clunky and unbalanced.
  3. You want a first-person survival-horror game: Start with Outer Gods. Its tags and official description emphasize exploration, action, stealth, crafting and survival pressure.
  4. You dislike party management and long dialogue sequences: Try Outer Gods first. Its first-person structure should put more emphasis on moving through spaces and responding to immediate threats.
  5. You have a modest PC: Start with Reign. Its listed memory and storage requirements are dramatically lower.
  6. You have a recent gaming PC and want the newest presentation: Start with Outer Gods, provided your system meets its 16 GB RAM and RTX 3050/RX 6600-class minimum target.
  7. You want to understand the franchise’s design foundation: Start with Reign, then use Outer Gods as a change of format rather than expecting a conventional sequel.

Should you play both, and in what order?

Playing both is worthwhile if you enjoy the setting but want to see two very different interpretations of horror role-playing. The most informative sequence is Reign of the Old Ones first, followed by Outer Gods: you begin with the 2019 CRPG systems and then move to the 2026 first-person survival-horror approach.

That sequence is a recommendation for contrast and accessibility, not a required narrative path. If you already know that you dislike turn-based combat, there is little reason to force yourself through Reign before trying Outer Gods. Conversely, if your PC cannot meet Outer Gods’ minimum specification, starting with Reign is both practical and more consistent with the franchise’s RPG roots.

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm the format: Choose the CRPG if you want dialogue, builds and tactical turns; choose the first-person game if you want exploration, stealth and crafting.
  • Check the date and review window: Outer Gods released on 26 October 2026, so its review picture can move quickly as more players publish feedback.
  • Check your hardware: Compare your Windows version, RAM, graphics card, DirectX 12 support and available storage with the official listing.
  • Do not assume story dependency: The official pages do not establish sequel or prequel status.
  • Compare purchase options: The Steam listings provide separate purchase paths and a shared franchise bundle. Bundle contents, pricing and regional availability can change, so verify the current store page before checkout.

Bottom line: which Stygian game comes first?

Play Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones first if you want the franchise’s strongest traditional-RPG expression, lighter PC requirements and a slower, choice-heavy Lovecraftian campaign. Play Stygian: Outer Gods first if you want first-person survival horror, action, stealth, exploration and crafting and already have hardware that meets its demanding specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest all-purpose order is Reign of the Old Ones, then Outer Gods. Treat that as a gameplay-based path, not a confirmed story requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Outer Gods a direct sequel, or can I start with it?

The official store information does not classify its continuity, so there is no confirmed prerequisite campaign. You can start with Outer Gods if its first-person survival-horror format is what you want; beginning with Reign is mainly the safer choice for context and release-order exploration.

Does the Stygian bundle include both complete games?

The Steam listings identify a shared franchise bundle containing both titles. Check the live store page for the exact contents, regional price and any bundle-discount rules, since those details can change.

Do saves or character progress transfer between the two games?

No cross-game save or progression feature is documented in the cited listings. Plan on two independent games unless a later publisher update explicitly adds or explains shared progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my PC only meets the minimum requirement for Outer Gods?

The minimum specification is a compatibility target, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or graphics preset. If your system is close to the minimum, leave extra storage for updates and expect to adjust settings rather than assuming recommended-quality performance.

Can I play only one Stygian game without missing the point of the franchise?

Yes. Each game can be chosen for its own design: Reign for character-driven CRPG systems or Outer Gods for first-person survival horror. Buying both is useful when you want to compare those approaches, not because one is confirmed to unlock the other.
