To stream AI text in Flutter or React Native, use a two-hop design: the mobile app sends the prompt to your authenticated application server, the server calls the OpenAI Responses API with stream: true, and the server forwards a controlled event stream to the app. The phone never contains your provider API key. On the client, decode UTF-8 incrementally, split server-sent event (SSE) records at blank lines, append each response.output_text.delta value to local state, and stop on a terminal event such as response.completed or response.failed. This produces ChatGPT-style progressive text while keeping credentials, quotas, logging and moderation decisions under your control.
What architecture should a streaming Flutter or React Native app use?
The reliable pattern is a server proxy between the app and the model provider. It separates secrets from an untrusted mobile bundle and gives you one place to authenticate users, enforce quotas, select allowed models, cancel upstream work and normalize events for different client platforms.
- Mobile request: Flutter or React Native sends the prompt, conversation identifier and an app authentication token to your HTTPS endpoint.
- Server request: Your application server validates the user and input, then calls the Responses API with
stream: trueusing a provider key stored only in server-side secrets. - Server stream: The server reads typed events and forwards either the original SSE records or a smaller newline-delimited JSON contract that your app owns.
- Mobile rendering: The app decodes bytes, parses records, appends text deltas to an accumulated answer and updates the UI in batches.
Forwarding a normalized contract is often easier when Flutter and React Native need identical behavior. For example, your server can emit {"type":"delta","text":"..."}, {"type":"completed"} and {"type":"error","message":"..."}. Preserve the provider event name and sequence number in optional fields if you need diagnostics, deduplication or resume.
Why must the provider key stay on the server?
Anything shipped in an Android or iOS bundle can be extracted. A mobile app should authenticate to your server, not directly to the model provider. The official Node streaming guidance states: “Keep your API key on the server and proxy the response stream to the browser.” Apply the same rule to native clients.

What belongs in the server endpoint?
- Verify the app session, tenant and permissions.
- Reject oversized prompts and unsupported parameters before making an upstream call.
- Apply per-user and per-device quotas, timeout limits and an allow-list of models.
- Attach an application request ID for logs and support tickets.
- Abort the upstream request when the client disconnects or sends a stop request.
- Redact prompts and generated text in logs unless your privacy policy explicitly permits retention.
How do Responses API streaming events map to UI state?
Treat the stream as a state machine rather than as an endless sequence of characters. The Responses API emits typed semantic events; text is only one event category.
| Event or condition | Client action | Visible state |
|---|---|---|
response.created or response.queued |
Record the request ID, clear any previous error and start timing. | Show a generating indicator. |
response.output_text.delta |
Append the event’s delta string exactly once. |
Render the accumulated answer. |
response.completed |
Mark success, close the stream and enable follow-up actions. | Show the finished answer. |
response.incomplete |
Keep partial text and expose retry or continue behavior. | Explain that generation stopped before completion. |
response.failed or an error event |
Stop spinners, retain partial text according to product policy and record a retryable error. | Show an actionable failure state. |
| Connection closes without a terminal event | Mark the result interrupted; do not silently label it complete. | Offer retry or resume if your protocol supports it. |
Typed events include monotonically increasing sequence_number values. Store that value, or your own request and chunk identifiers, when a reconnecting client must detect duplicates. Never append a delta again merely because a network retry delivered the same record twice.
How do I build the server-side streaming proxy?
Use the provider’s server SDK or HTTPS client on your application server. The following Node-style outline shows the control flow without tying your design to a particular framework or model name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesapp.post('/api/ai/stream', authenticateApp, async (req, res) => {
validatePromptAndQuota(req.body);
res.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/event-stream');
res.setHeader('Cache-Control', 'no-cache');
res.setHeader('Connection', 'keep-alive');
const controller = new AbortController();
req.on('close', () => controller.abort());
try {
const stream = await client.responses.create({
model: chooseAllowedModel(req.user),
input: req.body.prompt,
stream: true,
signal: controller.signal
});
for await (const event of stream) {
res.write(`data: ${JSON.stringify(event)}nn`);
if (event.type === 'response.completed' ||
event.type === 'response.failed' ||
event.type === 'response.incomplete') {
break;
}
}
} catch (error) {
if (!controller.signal.aborted) {
res.write(`event: errorndata: ${JSON.stringify({message: 'stream failed'})}nn`);
}
} finally {
res.end();
}
});
Use framework-appropriate APIs for request disconnects and abort signals. If your mobile networking stack handles newline-delimited JSON more consistently than SSE, translate each provider event on the server and emit one JSON object per line. Keep the contract documented and versioned so an app update cannot misinterpret a new event.
How should the proxy handle backpressure and buffering?
Do not accumulate the entire completion before responding; flush each event or a small coalesced group. At the same time, avoid forcing a UI rebuild for every character. The server can coalesce very small deltas for a few milliseconds, while the client batches state notifications. Set reasonable maximum output and wall-clock limits so a forgotten connection cannot consume resources indefinitely.

How do I stream text in Flutter?
Flutter needs an HTTP client that exposes the response body as a byte stream. Decode UTF-8 incrementally, buffer incomplete records, split on the SSE blank-line separator, then parse each data: payload. A typed Dart package can reduce parser code when its endpoint and event model match your server; the documented openai_dart helpers include typed events, accumulate() and collectText(). A custom parser remains preferable when you normalize events, need cancellation, or must redact and instrument every record.
Flutter implementation sequence
- Create a
StreamControlleror repository method that starts an authenticated POST to your proxy. - Read the response byte stream with a UTF-8 decoder that preserves partial multibyte characters between chunks.
- Append decoded characters to a buffer. Extract complete SSE records whenever the buffer contains a blank line; leave the final incomplete fragment in the buffer.
- For each record, collect its
data:lines, join them as defined by your server contract and decode JSON. - Append text only for
response.output_text.delta. Route lifecycle and error events to state transitions instead of displaying them. - Notify the widget tree at a controlled cadence, such as once per frame or after a small number of deltas.
- On cancellation or widget disposal, abort the HTTP request and close subscriptions.
final answer = StringBuffer();
await for (final event in repository.streamAnswer(prompt)) {
switch (event.type) {
case 'response.output_text.delta':
answer.write(event.delta ?? '');
emit(AnswerState.streaming(answer.toString()));
break;
case 'response.completed':
emit(AnswerState.completed(answer.toString()));
break;
case 'response.incomplete':
emit(AnswerState.incomplete(answer.toString()));
break;
case 'response.failed':
case 'error':
emit(AnswerState.failed(answer.toString(), event.message));
break;
}
}
The snippet assumes your repository has already converted SSE records into typed events. Keep parsing, authentication and cancellation in that repository layer rather than in a widget, which makes the same stream usable by a notifier, BLoC or other state-management approach.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What commonly breaks Flutter parsers?
- Assuming one network chunk equals one SSE record. TCP and HTTP chunk boundaries are arbitrary.
- Decoding each byte chunk independently, which can corrupt a multibyte UTF-8 character split across chunks.
- Appending every event’s string field, including lifecycle metadata or empty deltas.
- Calling
setStatefor every tiny token on a fast connection and causing jank. - Failing to cancel the subscription when navigating away, leaving generation and billing active.
How do I show ChatGPT-style tokens in React Native?
React Native must use a networking library that truly exposes incremental response bytes or SSE events on every target platform. Support differs between React Native versions, native networking implementations and polyfills, so verify Android and iOS behavior in the exact versions used by your project before choosing a package.
React Native implementation sequence
- POST the prompt to your authenticated proxy and retain an abort controller or library-specific cancellation handle.
- Read incremental bytes when available. Feed them through a streaming UTF-8 decoder, not a one-shot JSON parser.
- Parse complete SSE records or your server’s newline-delimited JSON objects.
- Append only the
deltafrom text-delta events to one accumulated string held in component state, a reducer or a store. - Batch updates so rendering occurs at a controlled cadence rather than once per token.
- Handle completed, incomplete, failed and disconnected outcomes separately.
const textRef = { current: '' };
for await (const event of streamEvents(request)) {
if (event.type === 'response.output_text.delta') {
textRef.current += event.delta ?? '';
scheduleBatchedRender(textRef.current);
} else if (event.type === 'response.completed') {
finish(textRef.current);
} else if (event.type === 'response.incomplete') {
markIncomplete(textRef.current);
} else if (event.type === 'response.failed' || event.type === 'error') {
showRetry(textRef.current, event.message);
}
}
The official JavaScript reference documents access to the raw fetch response for custom streaming logic, but a browser-style fetch body is not equally incremental in every React Native environment. If your selected client cannot reliably expose bytes, keep the provider stream on the server and send coalesced chunks over a transport that your app supports. Do not ship a provider key merely to work around a client limitation.
Should I use SSE or WebSockets for AI text?
For one-way generated text, SSE over HTTP is the documented Responses API pattern and is usually the simplest choice. WebSockets become useful when the product needs persistent bidirectional messaging, interactive voice or frequent client-to-server events, but they add connection and reconnect complexity.

| Decision axis | SSE | WebSockets |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Server-to-client stream over an HTTP request; the app sends a new request for a new prompt. | Bidirectional channel; client and server can send messages at any time. |
| Connection lifetime | One generation can use one HTTP connection; close it after a terminal event. | Designed for a long-lived session that must be monitored and closed deliberately. |
| Reconnect and resume | Reconnect with an application request ID and sequence number if your proxy can replay safely. | Implement session, heartbeat, replay and duplicate handling yourself. |
| Intermediaries | Uses familiar HTTP infrastructure, but buffering proxies must be configured to flush events. | Requires WebSocket upgrade support through every load balancer and gateway. |
| Implementation effort | Simple event parsing and HTTP cancellation. | More lifecycle states, heartbeats, reconnect policy and server capacity planning. |
| Best fit | Text generation, progress events and ordinary request/response products. | Voice, collaborative sessions or applications with continuous two-way interaction. |
Choose based on the product’s communication pattern, not on the desire to make token display look more “real time.” SSE already delivers incremental text; WebSockets do not improve model quality or remove the need for a secure server proxy.
How do I make streaming reliable on mobile networks?
Design for pauses, partial output and disconnects. A stream can stop after useful text has arrived, so the UI must preserve that text while clearly distinguishing an incomplete answer from a successful one.
- Give every generation an application request ID and record provider sequence numbers when available.
- Use an explicit stop action that aborts both the mobile request and the upstream provider call.
- Set connect, idle and total-duration timeouts; do not wait forever for a final token.
- On reconnect, replay only when the server can prove which sequence numbers were delivered. Otherwise start a new request and label it as a retry.
- Ignore empty deltas and duplicate terminal events.
- Bound the visible text buffer and enforce server-side output limits.
- Test slow throughput, radio handoffs, app backgrounding, malformed JSON, a record split across byte chunks and a connection that closes without a terminal event.
How should streamed output be moderated?
Streaming changes the safety decision because partial completions are harder to evaluate than a complete response. OpenAI warns that “Streaming makes it more difficult to moderate the content of the completions.” Requested moderation scores arrive after the full generated output rather than alongside every partial delta.
If your product requires approval before any text is displayed, do not render raw deltas immediately. Buffer the completion, run the required review workflow, then release approved text. If progressive display is essential, define a documented risk policy, add reporting and stop controls, and make clear that text shown before a later review may be incomplete or subsequently blocked.
What security checks belong in production?
- Keep the provider key in server secret storage; never place it in Dart, JavaScript, an application config file shipped to users or a mobile build artifact.
- Authenticate every proxy request and authorize the requested model and features for that user.
- Validate prompt length, attachments, output limits and metadata before forwarding.
- Apply quotas and abuse controls per account, device and IP as appropriate.
- Redact secrets, personal data and full generated text from routine logs.
- Use TLS, disable intermediary buffering that delays events and verify that load balancers permit long-lived responses.
- Return safe, stable error codes to the app; keep provider diagnostics in protected server logs.
- Cancel upstream work on client disconnect to avoid unnecessary latency and usage.
How do I troubleshoot a stream that appears frozen?
The app receives one large answer at the end
Check whether the proxy, CDN or load balancer is buffering the response. Confirm that the server flushes each SSE record (or small coalesced group), that the response has the streaming content type and that the mobile library exposes incremental bytes rather than waiting for the whole body.

Text is duplicated or jumps backward
Log request IDs and sequence numbers. A retry may be replaying events that the client already appended, or two UI subscriptions may be consuming the same stream. Append deltas in one reducer or store and make terminal handling idempotent.
Text contains broken characters
Use an incremental UTF-8 decoder across byte chunks. Do not convert each network chunk to a string independently, because a multibyte character can span chunks.
The spinner never stops
Handle response.incomplete, response.failed, explicit error events and a socket close without a terminal event. A client that waits only for response.completed will leave interrupted requests looking active forever.
React Native works on one platform only
Test the exact Android and iOS versions, networking library and release build used by your application. If incremental response bodies are unavailable on one target, keep provider streaming on the server and switch that client to a supported SSE or coalesced-chunk transport.

- Malformed JSON, an unknown event type and duplicate terminal events.
- A UTF-8 character split across byte chunks and an SSE record split across network reads.
- Cancellation from a Stop button and cancellation when the screen is disposed.
- Server rejection for an unauthenticated user, an oversized prompt and an exhausted quota.
- Slow, intermittent and offline connections, including a reconnect policy that cannot duplicate text.
- Log checks proving that provider keys and sensitive prompt content are not emitted.
What is the practical implementation checklist?
- Define the server-owned event contract and terminal states.
- Implement authenticated proxying with a private provider key and request validation.
- Call the Responses API with
stream: true. - Forward SSE or normalized newline-delimited JSON without waiting for the full completion.
- Implement incremental UTF-8 decoding and record buffering in each mobile client.
- Append only
response.output_text.deltatext and batch UI updates. - Add cancellation, timeouts, quotas, bounded buffers and redacted telemetry.
- Choose SSE unless the product genuinely needs a persistent bidirectional or realtime modality.
- Decide whether moderation permits pre-review progressive display.
- Run the failure and network tests before releasing the feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Flutter or React Native app call the model provider directly?
It can technically make an HTTPS request, but doing so exposes the provider credential in a distributable bundle. A server proxy is the safer boundary because it can authenticate users, enforce quotas and change provider settings without shipping a new app.
How do I resume an interrupted AI response?
Resume is an application feature, not an automatic property of SSE. Persist a request identifier and event sequence numbers, then have the server replay only records the client has not acknowledged; otherwise start a new generation and label it as a retry.
Why does streaming make content safety harder?
A partial prefix may look harmless while a later portion changes its meaning, and moderation results may arrive only after the complete output. Products with strict pre-display review should buffer the response instead of rendering deltas immediately.
How often should a mobile UI update during token streaming?
Update on a controlled cadence rather than once for every tiny delta. Frame-based or short-interval batching reduces layout work while preserving the perception of continuous output, especially on older devices.
