For reliable decision agents, let the language model interpret the request and choose a tool, but let ordinary application code perform calculations, validate inputs, check permissions, and make changes. The model can then explain the tool’s result or decide what to do next. This division keeps natural-language interaction flexible without trusting generated text to carry out exact or consequential operations.

The pattern has three parts: the LLM interprets and requests an action; a script validates and executes it; and the LLM uses the returned result to continue or respond. The application—not the model—controls the boundary between a suggested action and a real one.

Should an LLM do the calculation or call a function?

For exact arithmetic or other results that must be correct, have the LLM call a function and let deterministic code calculate the answer. A model is useful for understanding what the user means; it is not a dependable calculator, database client, permission system, or transaction executor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Learn puts the boundary plainly: “LLMs can only generate tokens — they can’t browse the web, query a database, or call an API on their own.” An application must receive the model’s structured request, interpret it, and decide whether and how to execute it. OpenAI’s Help Center describes function calling as a way “to connect OpenAI models to external tools and systems.” In both cases, the model proposes a call; the surrounding application performs the actual operation.

That distinction matters even when the model’s proposed arguments look plausible. A tool call can contain a wrong amount, an invalid identifier, or an action outside the user’s authority. Treating the model’s output as executable instruction without checks turns a language error into an application error.

Use the model for interpretation

The LLM can translate a request such as “What would I owe after applying the credit?” into a typed request with the relevant account and credit identifiers. It can select among tools, recognize that required information is missing, and decide whether another step is needed after receiving a result.

Use code for exact work

A script should retrieve authoritative records, check that inputs match an expected schema, calculate totals, apply business rules, and perform authorized side effects. These are operations for which the same valid input should produce the same result under the same rules—and for which failures need to be inspected and handled explicitly.

Return the result to the model

After execution, send the tool’s result back as structured data. The LLM can explain it in natural language, ask the user to resolve a missing value, or request another tool call. A final answer should reflect the returned result, not a number or status the model invented along the way.

How does the three-part pattern work?

The pattern is a controlled loop: interpret, execute, and respond or continue. It is not simply a prompt telling the model to “be accurate”; the application decides what the model is allowed to request and what code will actually do.

  1. Interpret and decide: Give the model a task and a limited set of tool descriptions. It returns a structured request naming a tool and supplying arguments, or it can respond without a tool if the task needs no external operation.
  2. Validate and execute: Application code checks the requested tool, argument types and ranges, authorization, and any operation-specific safeguards. Only a valid, permitted request reaches the function that calculates, retrieves, or changes something.
  3. Return a machine-readable result: The function provides a result or an error in a predictable format. A result might include a calculated value; an error might say that a required field is missing or the user is not authorized.
  4. Close the loop: The application gives the result to the model. It can then explain the outcome, ask a targeted follow-up, choose another permitted function, or stop when the user’s goal is met.

The loop should have explicit boundaries. Set limits on retries, timeouts, and the maximum number of steps so an agent cannot keep calling tools indefinitely. Make errors useful enough for recovery, but do not let the model decide on its own to override a rejected permission check.

Which tasks belong in deterministic code?

Keep operations that need exactness, authority, or an external side effect in code. The model can help determine which operation is relevant, but it should not be the source of truth for the operation’s result.

  • Arithmetic and transformations: Compute totals, percentages, conversions, or other exact results using tested functions rather than asking the model to calculate in prose.
  • Data retrieval: Query databases and external APIs through application code. The model can request the lookup, but the returned record should come from the connected system.
  • Validation: Check required fields, types, ranges, allowed values, and cross-field rules before using arguments.
  • Authorization: Check whether the user and the requested operation are permitted. A tool schema can describe the shape of a request, but it does not establish that the caller has permission to make it.
  • Side effects: Use code to submit, update, delete, or otherwise change data. Require an approval step before irreversible or high-impact actions.

A useful design test is to ask what would happen if a model supplied a valid-looking but incorrect argument. If the result could move money, expose private data, change a record, or produce a materially wrong exact answer, the application needs its own checks before execution.

How do tool schemas and validation prevent bad calls?

A narrow schema makes the model’s request easier to interpret and reject safely, but it does not make the request trustworthy by itself. Define each tool around one clear operation and validate its arguments in application code before execution.

For example, a calculation tool should accept the specific numeric inputs it needs rather than a free-form instruction such as “work out the right amount.” A record lookup should accept a defined identifier rather than an unconstrained query string when the task only requires one record. Avoid giving a tool broader authority than the task needs.

Validate more than syntax

Check that each argument has the required type and falls within an acceptable range. Then verify relationships that a basic schema may not capture: whether the identifier exists, whether the record belongs to the current user, whether the requested operation is allowed in its current state, and whether repeating the request could create a duplicate effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft warns that models can call the wrong tool or provide wrong arguments, so guardrails and validation remain necessary. Strict schema enforcement, where supported, can improve adherence to the supplied shape; OpenAI documents a strict mode for this purpose. But a request that satisfies a schema can still be unauthorized, based on stale data, or inappropriate for the current state. Schema compliance is a format check, not a substitute for business rules or access controls.

Make errors actionable without making them permissive

Return machine-readable errors that distinguish recoverable problems from hard stops. A missing required value can prompt the model to ask the user for it. A malformed argument can let the model repair the request within the available schema. A permission denial should remain a denial; a retry must not become a way around it.

Keep error responses specific enough to guide a safe next step, while avoiding disclosure of sensitive records or internal details. The application should be the authority on whether an operation can proceed, even when the model explains the failure.

Should I use a deterministic chain, a single agent, or multiple agents?

Choose the simplest orchestration that can complete the task. A fixed chain is easiest to predict and audit; a single agent adds adaptive tool choice; a multi-agent system can divide work across specialties but adds coordination and debugging overhead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Design How it works Predictability and auditability Flexibility Main operational trade-off
Deterministic chain Code fixes the order of model and tool calls. Highest of the three: the path is defined in advance. Lower; the workflow handles the cases anticipated in its sequence. Well suited to defined tasks, with less room to adapt when the request takes an unexpected path.
Single agent The LLM chooses among available tools and determines whether to take another step within a domain. Less predictable than a fixed chain; calls and iterations need controls. Higher; it can select tools based on the request and results. Less orchestration overhead than multiple agents, but repeated or incorrect calls must be contained.
Multi-agent system Several specialized agents coordinate across domains or contexts. More difficult to trace and debug because coordination spans agents. Can divide a large problem among specialized roles. Modularization comes with greater orchestration and operational complexity.

These are not three levels of guaranteed capability. They are trade-offs in how much control is fixed in code and how much is left to adaptive model decisions. Microsoft describes deterministic chains as the most predictable and auditable option for well-defined tasks, while single-agent and multi-agent patterns trade increasing flexibility and specialization for additional control and orchestration needs.

When a deterministic chain fits

Use a fixed sequence when the steps are known in advance and each one matters: for example, retrieve a record, calculate a value, validate a proposed change, then request approval before execution. Fixed ordering makes the route easier to test and inspect.

When a single agent fits

A single agent can be appropriate when a request may require different tools or a variable number of steps, but remains within a coherent domain. Constrain its available tools, enforce a maximum-step limit, and monitor for loops or repeated calls.

When multiple agents fit

Specialized agents may help when a larger task spans distinct domains or contexts. They also create more paths to trace: an outcome may depend on handoffs and decisions across several components. Add that architecture only when the separation solves a real problem that a fixed chain or one agent cannot handle cleanly.

How do I make an LLM workflow auditable?

Record enough to reconstruct what the application permitted, what it executed, and how it handled the result. Logging only the final natural-language response makes it difficult to distinguish a model mistake from a tool, validation, or authorization failure.

  • Record the tool name and validated arguments for each attempted operation.
  • Record the result status, including whether the call succeeded, failed validation, timed out, or was denied.
  • Record approval events for actions that require human review.
  • Apply explicit timeout, retry, and maximum-step limits, and make those controls observable.
  • Test tools and their validation rules independently, then test the model-to-tool handoff and the full workflow.

Keep records useful for investigation while applying the privacy and retention rules appropriate to the data. A log should show what was checked and what happened without needlessly duplicating sensitive information. The specific retention period and logging policy depend on the application; no universal interval is established by the cited guidance.

Testing should include more than a happy path. Check malformed types, out-of-range values, missing information, unknown identifiers, denied permissions, repeated requests, tool failures, and timeouts. For workflows with several possible branches, verify that a returned error leads to the intended repair or stop—not an unbounded retry or an unauthorized action.

What are the main failure modes, and how should an application respond?

Most failures occur at the boundary between a plausible model request and a real operation. Treat that boundary as an explicit control point, with a defined response for each kind of failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model selects the wrong tool

Do not execute a call merely because it is structurally valid. Check whether the requested operation is available for the current task and user. If it is not, return a controlled error or offer the appropriate permitted path.

An argument is malformed or out of range

Reject it before calling the underlying function. Return a machine-readable explanation that identifies the field or constraint the model needs to correct. Do not silently coerce an unexpected value if doing so could change the meaning of the request.

A required value or decision is missing

Ask the user for the missing information rather than inferring a value that affects an exact calculation or consequential action. The model is well suited to phrasing that question; the application should ensure the operation cannot proceed until the required input exists.

A call fails, times out, or gets repeated

Represent operational failure distinctly from a successful result. Apply a bounded retry policy and a maximum-step limit; if the call cannot complete, let the model explain that the operation did not finish instead of presenting an unverified outcome. For operations that might be repeated, validate idempotency or otherwise prevent duplicate effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An action is irreversible or high impact

Pause for human approval before execution. The approval event should be recorded, and the application should verify that the approved action is the one it is about to perform. A model-generated explanation is not approval.

What does the pattern not guarantee?

Separating language from execution improves control over exact operations, but it does not make an agent infallible. A model may misunderstand intent or choose a poor next step; code can contain bugs, rules can be incomplete, and external systems can return errors or stale information.

Likewise, structured tool calls and strict schemas reduce malformed requests but do not prove that a request is correct, authorized, or safe. Keep permission checks, monitoring, testing, and approval controls in the application. The cited authoritative sources do not establish a directly applicable performance statistic for this architecture, so claims that it reduces errors by a particular percentage would not be supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an LLM use a calculator tool without making the answer up?

A calculator tool can supply an exact result, but the application still needs to pass the right inputs and return the tool’s output accurately. For high-stakes results, verify the underlying function independently and make the response distinguish a confirmed result from a failed or incomplete calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should an agent do when a user’s request is ambiguous?

It should ask a focused clarification question before requesting an operation whose outcome depends on the missing distinction. The application can make this safer by requiring all essential arguments before the tool becomes eligible to run.

Do function calls work the same way across AI providers?

The shared idea is that a model produces a structured request and an application connects that request to external code. Tool formats, schema features, and enforcement options vary by provider, so implement against the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming identical behavior.

How can I tell whether a tool call actually changed something?

Use the result returned by the system that performed the operation, not the model’s description of what it intended to do. For consequential changes, design the tool to return a clear status or record identifier that the application can verify and log.
