To turn off AI filename suggestions in macOS 27, open Finder, choose Finder > Settings, select General, and switch off Suggest filenames. Apple’s file-renaming guide uses the capitalization Suggest File Names for the same control. This Finder preference stops the filename-suggestion feature without requiring you to disable Apple Intelligence throughout macOS.
How do I turn off AI file name suggestions in macOS 27?
The setting is in Finder’s General preferences. You can change it in a few clicks, and there is no separate command, Terminal instruction, or system-wide AI switch required.
- Open Finder from the Dock or press
Command-Space, type Finder, and open it. - In the macOS menu bar, choose Finder > Settings.
- Open the General section if it is not already selected.
- Turn off Suggest filenames. Apple’s file-renaming documentation may display the label as Suggest File Names; the capitalization differs, but it refers to the same Finder preference.
Close the Settings window when you are finished. Finder will no longer use this preference to offer filename suggestions while you work with files.

When does Finder show these AI filename suggestions?
Apple describes the feature as an Apple Intelligence-powered Finder option that can suggest names when you rename, save, or edit documents. The suggestions are tied to filename workflows, rather than being a general writing or search feature.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Renaming: Finder can offer a proposed name while you change a file’s name.
- Saving: A suggestion may appear as you save a newly created document.
- Editing: Finder can present a suggestion during file-related editing actions.
Turning off Suggest filenames targets those Finder suggestions. It does not change unrelated Finder preferences such as display views, file extensions, tags, or sidebar items.
What is the difference between the Finder setting and disabling Apple Intelligence?
The Finder checkbox is a narrow, filename-specific control. Apple documents separate controls for broader Apple Intelligence experiences, including Siri-related features, summaries in Messages and Mail, and notification summaries.
| Control | Scope | What to change it for |
|---|---|---|
| Suggest filenames in Finder > Settings > General | Finder filename suggestions | Stop proposed names when renaming, saving, or editing files |
| Apple Intelligence controls in macOS Settings | Multiple system and app features | Manage broader AI functions such as Siri and content summaries |
If your only problem is unwanted file names, use the Finder preference. Disabling every Apple Intelligence feature is not necessary for this task and would affect functions unrelated to filenames.

Why can’t I find “Suggest filenames” on my Mac?
Apple says Apple Intelligence is not available in every language or region, and usage limits may apply. As a result, the filename option may not appear for every Mac configuration, even when the computer is running macOS 27.
Check the macOS version
Confirm that the Mac is running macOS 27 by opening the Apple menu and choosing About This Mac. The instructions and labels in this article apply to macOS 27; Apple can move or rename controls in later releases.
Check language and region availability
Review the Mac’s language and region settings if Apple Intelligence features are unavailable. Apple’s support documentation notes that availability varies by language and region, so a missing checkbox can reflect feature availability rather than a Finder problem.

Look in Finder settings, not the general Apple Intelligence page
Open an active Finder window before using the menu bar. The Finder > Settings command belongs to Finder and is separate from the system-level Apple Intelligence controls in macOS Settings.
How can I verify that the setting is off?
After switching off the preference, perform the same kind of action that previously produced a suggestion: rename a document, save a new document, or edit a file. The filename-suggestion prompt should no longer be supplied by Finder’s Suggest filenames feature.
- Open a Finder window and select a test document.
- Rename it or use an application’s save workflow.
- Check whether Finder offers an automatically proposed filename.
- If the control is still enabled, return to Finder > Settings > General and confirm that Suggest filenames remains off.
This check tests the filename feature only. Other applications can have their own naming assistance or automation, which is outside this Finder preference.

What should I do if suggestions continue after I turn the option off?
First, verify that you changed the Finder preference rather than a similarly named Apple Intelligence setting. Then repeat the test in a Finder-based rename or save workflow and check the switch again.
- The switch is missing: Apple Intelligence availability may be limited by language or region, or the feature may not be exposed in the current configuration.
- The switch is on again: Return to Finder Settings and turn it off once more, making sure the change is made in the General pane.
- The suggestion appears only in one app: Determine whether that app is generating its own filename prompt. The Finder preference controls Finder’s filename-suggestion feature, not every naming tool supplied by third-party software.
Apple’s interface labels can change in future macOS updates. If the wording differs, look in Finder’s General settings for the filename-suggestion control described in Apple’s current Finder documentation.

The preference controls whether Finder proposes filenames. It does not remove Apple Intelligence from macOS, alter existing filenames, or disable unrelated summaries and assistant features. Those functions have their own controls and can be managed independently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Finder filename suggestions disable Apple Intelligence everywhere?
No. The switch is limited to Finder’s filename-suggestion feature. Siri options, Mail and Messages summaries, notification summaries, and other Apple Intelligence functions use separate controls.
Why does Apple sometimes write “Suggest File Names” and sometimes “Suggest filenames”?
Apple’s Finder settings and file-renaming pages use slightly different capitalization for the same filename-suggestion preference. In both cases, the control is found at Finder > Settings > General.
Can I turn the feature back on later?
Yes. Reopen Finder > Settings > General and enable the filename-suggestion switch. The change is reversible and does not require reinstalling macOS.

Is the option available on every Mac running macOS 27?
Not necessarily. Apple says Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region, and usage limits can apply. A missing option may therefore reflect availability in your configuration rather than an error in Finder.
