Independent tests found about 37–40 minutes of mowing, a clean cut and a 40 L grass box. The important catch is packaging: skin-only versions do not include a battery or charger, so the real cost can be much higher than the mower price. Regional versions (RMA 239, RMA 239 C and RMA 239.1 C) also differ in quoted weight, height settings and included equipment, so check the exact suffix before ordering.
What is the Stihl RMA 239?
The RMA 239 is a battery-powered, push lawn mower in Stihl’s 36 V-equivalent AK battery system. Its 37 cm cutting deck is intended for manoeuvrability rather than covering very large areas quickly. A central height adjustment, a 40 L catcher and the absence of exhaust emissions make it a practical format for ordinary residential lawns.
Stihl’s Australian product description calls the lightweight, manoeuvrable mower an ideal home-lawn tool with zero emissions. That is a manufacturer positioning statement, not an independent performance finding. In day-to-day terms, the RMA 239 is best understood as a quiet, compact alternative to a petrol push mower for lawns where a 37 cm width is sufficient.

The name covers several regional and equipment variants. Confirm the suffix, battery status and stated measurements on the dealer’s listing rather than assuming every RMA 239 has the same specification.

The 24 kg Ireland figure should not be combined with the 15–16 kg RMA 239 C figures as though they were a single configuration. They come from different regional materials and equipment presentations. A dealer may also quote a kit weight that includes a battery, while another quotes the bare mower.
How well does the RMA 239 cut and collect grass?
Available hands-on evidence points to a good residential cut when the mower is used within its capacity. In a 5 August 2024 Ideal Home test, the reviewer mowed a dry 12.5 m² (134 sq ft) lawn in warm conditions and described the cut as excellent, with no clippings left to clean up. That is one controlled household test, not a guarantee for every lawn, grass species or weather condition.
The 40 L catcher is a useful match for the deck. It reduces emptying compared with a very small compact mower, while keeping the machine narrower than typical 40–46 cm models. Wet, long or heavily overgrown grass will fill the box faster and place more load on the motor than the dry test lawn did.

What the cutting-height adjustment means
Most published RMA 239 C specifications give a 30–70 mm central range. Ideal Home recorded 20–70 mm on the tested machine, while the Australian page describes six central positions without publishing the same numerical range. Use the exact range in your local manual or product listing; do not assume a 20 mm minimum on every suffix.
Central adjustment lets you change all wheels together rather than setting each wheel separately. For routine mowing, raise the deck when grass is long, damp or stressed, then return to a lower setting only when the lawn is growing strongly and the mower is not labouring.
How long does the battery last?
Independent figures cluster around 37–40 minutes. Ideal Home reported about 40 minutes in its warm-weather test, and Which? lists 37 minutes for the RMA 239 C under its own test framework. Runtime changes with battery size, grass height, moisture, blade sharpness, terrain and how full the catcher becomes.

Stihl’s Ireland brochure gives a working area of up to 250 m² with an AK 20. Treat that as a stated application figure for that battery and market, not as a universal area guarantee. A lawn with frequent obstacles, slopes or long damp growth can consume charge faster than a flat, dry lawn.

The AK battery system is shared with other Stihl garden tools. An AK 20 is the battery associated with the 250 m² brochure working-area claim, while Stiftung Warentest’s RMA 239.1 C Set listing records a 16 kg machine with an AK 30. The larger battery can alter total weight and kit price; check the set specification rather than inferring capacity from the mower name.
What happens when the battery is empty?
Ideal Home measured approximately 135 minutes to reach 80% charge and 180 minutes to reach full charge. Those times describe the charger and battery used in that test. If you need to mow more than one lawn in a session, buying a second compatible AK battery may be more practical than waiting for a recharge.
How heavy, loud and easy to store is it?
For the RMA 239 C, Stihl UK lists 15 kg without a battery. Ideal Home recorded 16 kg for its tested mower, and Which? also lists 16 kg. Stiftung Warentest records 16 kg with an AK 30 for the RMA 239.1 C Set. These figures explain why the mower can feel easy to turn and lift, but they are not interchangeable with the 24 kg Ireland brochure figure.
Ideal Home measured 91 dB during its test. A cordless motor avoids petrol exhaust and engine refuelling, but 91 dB is still loud enough that hearing protection is sensible for prolonged use and considerate mowing hours are appropriate.

What lawn size is the RMA 239 suitable for?
A 37 cm deck is a sensible choice for small to medium domestic lawns where compact handling matters more than maximum coverage speed. Stihl’s Ireland brochure gives up to 250 m² with an AK 20, while Which? describes the RMA 239 C as suitable for a medium lawn. Those are useful boundaries, but mowing frequency and grass conditions matter as much as area.
- Good fit: regular mowing on a mostly level lawn, narrow gates or paths, and owners who value low routine maintenance.
- Borderline: a larger lawn that can be divided into sessions, provided you have spare batteries or can tolerate charging time.
- Poor fit: extensive, steep or persistently wet grass where a wider deck, self-propulsion or a petrol machine’s continuous refuelling advantage is more important.
The RMA 239 is a push mower, not a self-propelled model. You supply the forward motion, so the 15–16 kg C variants are more appealing on level ground than on long slopes.
Does the RMA 239 include a battery and charger?
Not necessarily. The official Australian skin-only specification explicitly excludes the battery and charger, and skin-only packages in the AK range generally require you to own or buy both separately. A “set” can include a battery, but the exact battery model and charger still need checking in the listing.

- Check the stated mower weight and cutting-height range for that exact regional suffix.
- Ask the dealer which battery and charger warranty terms apply in your country.
How much does the RMA 239 cost to own?
Which? recorded a typical UK price of £445 for the RMA 239 C, checked in June 2025. That figure is a market snapshot, not a permanent price and not proof that a battery or charger was included. Prices and availability vary by country, retailer, promotion and kit contents.
Calculate total ownership cost as the mower, one compatible battery, one charger and any delivery or dealer fees. If you already have an AK battery and charger, the bare mower can be economical. If you need the complete power system, compare complete-kit prices rather than skin prices.

Is the RMA 239 better than a Bosch, EGO, Gardena or petrol mower?
There is no single winner without matching lawn size, kit contents and local prices. The RMA 239’s strongest case is compactness and access to the AK ecosystem; a rival may be better value if it includes a larger battery and charger at a similar complete-kit price, or better suited if it offers a wider deck or self-propulsion.

Compared with a petrol mower, the RMA 239 avoids fuel storage, oil changes and exhaust, but its working session is limited by battery charge and it still needs a recharge period. Compared with another cordless platform, the decisive question is usually the total kit price and whether you want more tools on the same battery system.
How do you use the RMA 239 safely and efficiently?
- Check the lawn. Remove stones, wire, toys and branches. Confirm the catcher, blade and wheels are secure.
- Fit a charged battery. Use only the compatible AK battery specified for your model and close the battery cover before starting.
- Set the deck height. Use the central lever and choose a higher setting for long or damp grass.
- Start on level ground. Engage the controls according to the manual, then let the blade reach operating speed before entering dense grass.
- Mow overlapping passes. Walk at a steady pace and avoid forcing the mower when the motor note drops.
- Empty the 40 L catcher. Stop the mower, remove the battery as instructed, and wait for the blade to stop before handling the box.
- Finish and recharge. Brush away loose debris, inspect the blade and place the battery on its charger in a dry, ventilated location.
Never lift, tilt or clear a blockage with the battery installed. Follow the safety interlock and blade-removal instructions in your regional manual.

Choose another class of mower when your lawn is substantially larger than the stated 250 m² AK 20 application, regularly becomes wet and overgrown, includes demanding slopes, or requires self-propulsion. In those cases, compare wider cordless decks, larger battery systems or petrol models on complete ownership cost and handling—not on the bare-tool sticker price.
