Yes. Step Out is a local, offline break planner that uses Google’s open-weight Gemma 3 1B model through Ollama to create one short outdoor activity from four choices: available time, familiar space, purpose, and mobility preference. Once Ollama, the model, and the app dependencies are installed, the planner can generate a break with Wi‑Fi disabled. Its Next.js backend keeps the model request on the same computer, while reflections stay in browser local storage. Deterministic application code—not the language model—filters suitable activities, performs time arithmetic, and validates the returned JSON. On the author’s Apple M1 laptop, requests took 7.45 seconds cold and 5.45–7.54 seconds when warm. The described version runs on a laptop, not a phone, and its safety rules cannot verify whether an outdoor location is actually safe.
What is Step Out and what does it produce?
Step Out is a short-interaction planner for people who want to leave their screen for a brief outdoor pause. You select four inputs, and the app returns one activity card containing instructions, a timed schedule, and a reflection prompt. You can save the result in the browser or download a plain-text file named step-out-activity.txt.
The design is intentionally narrow. It does not attempt to be a general chatbot, route planner, weather service, exercise coach, or location-aware navigation tool. The user supplies a familiar place and a simple intention; the app turns those constraints into a small mission that can be completed in five to twenty minutes.

- Available time: 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes.
- Outdoor space: a compound or courtyard, a familiar street, or an outdoor seating area.
- Goal: a quiet pause, gentle movement, or noticing surroundings.
- Mobility preference: walking/standing or seated.
That limited input set is also a privacy feature: the described interface does not ask for GPS coordinates, an address, a contact list, or a personal profile.

How does the offline architecture work?
Step Out uses a local Gemma 3 1B model served by Ollama. The Next.js backend sends the generation request to Ollama at 127.0.0.1:11434, which is the loopback address of the same computer. Preferences are processed locally, and reflections are kept in the browser’s local storage rather than sent to a hosted service.
| Layer | Role in Step Out | What remains local |
|---|---|---|
| Browser interface | Collects the four choices, displays the activity card, and offers save/download controls. | The selected preferences and saved reflections in that browser. |
| Next.js backend | Filters eligible activities, allocates the schedule, calls Ollama, and validates the response. | Request processing and timing logic on the computer running the app. |
| Ollama | Serves the gemma3:1b model through the local endpoint. |
Model inference and its input/output stay on the local machine after setup. |
| Gemma 3 1B | Turns the constrained activity choice into natural-language instructions and a reflection prompt. | Inference does not require a remote model endpoint once the model is installed. |
Offline does not mean zero preparation. The model and software dependencies must be downloaded while internet access is available. The author then generated a fresh plan with Wi‑Fi and other internet connections disabled. That test demonstrates that generation can work without a live network after setup; it does not mean the initial installation is network-free.
How can I run an AI break planner offline?
A reproduction of the described stack requires a computer capable of running Ollama, the Gemma 3 1B model, and the Step Out web application. The project-specific install scripts can differ, but the operational sequence is the same: install the runtime, download the model, start the local service, run the Next.js app, and test with networking disabled.
1. Prepare the computer
- Use a laptop or desktop with enough memory for Ollama and Gemma 3 1B to run alongside your development tools.
- Allow internet access during installation so the runtime, model weights, and JavaScript dependencies can be downloaded.
- Keep in mind that local inference consumes electricity and competes for memory and processor resources with other applications.
2. Install Ollama and download Gemma
Install Ollama for your operating system, then download the model used by Step Out:
ollama pull gemma3:1b
The model identifier matters. The backend is designed for gemma3:1b; pulling a different tag does not reproduce the documented setup unless the application configuration and validation rules are changed to match.
3. Make the local model service available
Start Ollama if it is not already running. A typical command is:
ollama serve
Step Out expects the service at 127.0.0.1:11434. If Ollama is listening on another address or port, the backend will need a corresponding configuration change. A browser page can still load while generation fails if the local service is unavailable, so treat the app and model server as two separate processes.

One-click scans. No signup required.
4. Install and run the Next.js application
From the project directory, install the JavaScript dependencies and start the development server using the scripts defined by the project:
npm install
npm run dev
These commands describe the usual Next.js workflow; use the project’s own documented script names if they differ. The important requirement is that the backend can reach Ollama over the loopback interface and that the browser can reach the Next.js frontend.

5. Generate a plan while connected
Choose one value in each of the four input groups and confirm that an activity card is returned. Check that the schedule adds up to the selected duration and that the mobility instruction matches your preference before relying on the card outdoors.
6. Test the offline condition
- Leave Ollama and the local web app running.
- Disable Wi‑Fi and any other internet connection.
- Generate a new plan rather than merely reopening a previously cached page.
- Confirm that the card appears and that saving or downloading still works.
This test separates true local inference from an interface that happens to display an earlier result. It also exposes local firewall, process, or memory problems before you depend on the planner for a timed break.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat choices can the planner handle?
The interface deliberately uses a small matrix of options so that the model receives a bounded task instead of an open-ended request.
| Input | Available values | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes | Sets the total budget that the backend must divide into preparation, activity, and return phases. |
| Space | Compound or courtyard; familiar street; outdoor seating area | Limits the kinds of actions that make sense in the selected setting. |
| Goal | Quiet pause; gentle movement; noticing surroundings | Sets the purpose and tone of the activity. |
| Mobility | Walking/standing; seated | Removes walking activities when seated is selected. |
Because the choices are categorical, Step Out does not need your exact location to create a plan. A “familiar street” is a user-provided description, not a map lookup. You remain responsible for choosing a place you know to be appropriate.
How are the schedule and activity selected?
The language model does not control the clock. Before inference, the backend filters a curated collection of five activities by space, goal, and mobility preference. Seated selections exclude activities that require walking. The backend then performs the time arithmetic and allocates preparation and return phases so the schedule totals the selected duration.
This division of responsibility is important. A generative model can produce plausible prose but may miscalculate minutes or drift outside a user’s constraints. Step Out uses code for those deterministic tasks and asks Gemma to express the already-constrained activity as readable instructions.
Structured output prevents an arbitrary activity
The response schema is generated with Zod 4. Eligible activity IDs are constrained as an enum, and the returned JSON is validated against the eligible list. If the model invents an ID that was not selected by the filtering step, validation can reject it instead of silently presenting an unrelated activity.
What the controls do not guarantee
Validation confirms that the response fits the application’s known structure and eligible activity set. It does not verify a fact about your surroundings, inspect the weather, detect traffic, or prove that every generated sentence is suitable for every person. The model remains responsible for wording, and wording can still require human judgment.
How fast is Gemma 3 1B on a laptop?
The only published measurements are from the author’s Apple M1 laptop in 2026. A cold request took 7.45 seconds. Warm requests ranged from 5.45 to 7.54 seconds.

| Request state | Reported time | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cold | 7.45 seconds | One request measured before the model was warm. |
| Warm | 5.45–7.54 seconds | Repeated requests on the same laptop after startup. |
These are single-setup measurements, not a benchmark for every computer. Memory pressure, processor model, thermal limits, background applications, and whether Ollama has already loaded the model can change the result. Local inference also has a hardware and electricity cost even when no network request is made.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a five-minute break, a several-second generation delay is small compared with the activity itself. If the model is repeatedly evicted from memory, however, every request may behave more like a cold start. Closing memory-heavy applications and leaving Ollama running can improve consistency, but the available data does not establish a performance guarantee for any other hardware.
Will Step Out work without Wi‑Fi, and does it run on a phone?
After installation, the described version can generate a fresh plan with Wi‑Fi and other internet connections disabled because inference is performed by Ollama on the same computer. The author explicitly states that this version runs the model on a laptop, not on a phone.
Offline operation therefore has two phases:
- Connected setup: install Ollama, download
gemma3:1b, install dependencies, and launch the app. - Offline use: keep the local model service and app available while the computer has no internet connection.
If your goal is to carry the planner into a phone-only situation, this implementation does not meet it. A phone browser might display a previously saved text file, but that is different from running Gemma locally on the phone.
Did the generated activity work in a real break?
On 9 October 2026, Cynthia Wahome tried a ten-minute seated activity in a residential courtyard. The generated card was titled “Notice outdoor sounds.” Its schedule assigned one minute to reach the spot, eight minutes to observe sounds, and one minute to return.
The reported break took 9 minutes 30 seconds, and the author checked the screen zero times. That is useful evidence that the interaction can send a person away from the display and that the schedule was close to its target in one case. It is a single author test, not an independent usability study or proof that every generated plan will fit its time budget in every environment.
Does Step Out track your location or store reflections remotely?
The documented workflow does not request a location. You choose a broad, familiar-space category, and the preference is processed on the same computer as the local model request. Reflections remain in browser local storage, while the activity can also be downloaded as step-out-activity.txt.
Local storage is browser- and device-specific. If you switch browsers or computers, the saved reflection may not appear there; clearing that browser’s site data can also remove locally stored content. The downloadable text file gives you a separate copy, but it should be handled like any other file on your computer.
“Offline” should still be interpreted precisely. The application avoids a remote inference request after setup, but the operating system, browser, and other software on the computer can have their own telemetry or update behavior. Step Out’s architecture alone does not make a general claim about every process on the device.

What safety protections are included?
Safety starts with narrowing the model’s choices. The curated activity set is filtered by space, goal, and mobility preference; seated users do not receive walking activities. Time arithmetic is performed by code, and schema validation prevents an ineligible activity ID from being accepted.
Those controls reduce predictable errors, but they are not a location-safety system. They cannot tell whether a courtyard is private, whether a street has traffic, whether a surface is slippery, or whether a person’s health condition makes an instruction inappropriate. They also do not prove that every generated sentence is safe or accessible.
Use a human check before starting
- Choose a place you already know and can leave immediately.
- Check traffic, lighting, weather, surfaces, privacy, and other local hazards yourself.
- Adapt or skip any instruction that conflicts with your mobility, health, or comfort.
- Keep the return route and the total time realistic; the app cannot see changes that occur after generation.
The author summarizes the limitation directly: the rules narrow the model’s choices, but they do not verify the safety of an outdoor location or prove that every generated sentence is appropriate.
How should you compare Step Out with another local outdoor-mission app?
There is no independent comparison in the available evidence. If you are evaluating another local planner, compare the implementation details rather than assuming that every “offline AI” label means the same thing.

What should I troubleshoot when offline generation fails?
The app loads but says the model is unavailable
Check that Ollama is running and that the model tag is present. The expected tag is gemma3:1b, and the backend expects the local endpoint at 127.0.0.1:11434. A mismatch in either value can produce an application-level error even when the web page itself works.
The first request is much slower than later requests
A cold request loads the model and can take longer than a warm request. The documented Apple M1 cold measurement was 7.45 seconds, while warm requests ranged from 5.45 to 7.54 seconds. If every request is slow, inspect available memory and competing workloads before assuming that Wi‑Fi is required.
The schedule does not match the selected duration
Verify that you are looking at a newly generated card and that the backend version includes the time-arithmetic logic. The intended design allocates preparation and return phases so the total equals 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Do not manually extend a card without recalculating the return time.
The activity conflicts with a seated preference
Regenerate the plan and confirm that the browser actually submitted “seated.” The filtering step is supposed to exclude walking activities before inference. If an unsuitable instruction still appears, treat it as a safety issue, stop, and inspect the returned data rather than following it.

Who is Step Out best suited to?
Step Out fits someone who wants a quick, low-friction prompt to leave a laptop, has access to a familiar outdoor space, and values local processing over a hosted AI service. The four-choice interface is simple enough for a short pause, while the seated option makes the activity set more adaptable than a walking-only prompt generator.
It is less suitable if you need turn-by-turn navigation, weather-aware recommendations, medical exercise guidance, verified accessibility information, or a phone-native offline model. It also requires more setup than a web chatbot because Ollama, the model, and the application must all be installed and available.
Is Step Out worth using?
Step Out is a credible example of a narrowly scoped offline AI tool: Gemma generates language, while conventional code handles filtering, timing, and schema validation. Its strongest evidence is concrete—the local endpoint, the offline generation check, measured response times on an Apple M1, and one courtyard trial. Its boundaries are equally concrete: setup is required, the described model runs on a laptop rather than a phone, and safety remains the user’s responsibility.
Use it as a prompt generator for a familiar place, not as an authority on whether that place is safe or whether an instruction suits your body. If you can install the stack and perform that quick human check, it can provide a private, screen-minimizing way to turn five to twenty available minutes into a defined outdoor break.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Gemma 3 1B run on a phone in Step Out?
Not in the described version. The author says the model runs on a laptop through Ollama, so a phone can only display a saved result unless a separate mobile implementation is built.
Does offline use eliminate the need for an internet connection entirely?
No. Internet access is needed to install Ollama, download gemma3:1b, and obtain application dependencies. After that setup, the author generated a new plan with Wi‑Fi and other internet connections disabled.
Can Step Out tell me whether a street or courtyard is safe?
No. It receives only a broad space category and cannot inspect traffic, weather, surfaces, lighting, or privacy. You must assess the location and modify or reject any instruction that feels unsuitable.
