Valve released SteamVR 2.18 on 21 October 2026. The stable update focuses on three areas: more resilient Steam Link streaming, broader Linux compatibility, and improved Steam Frame support. It also makes the Steam Frame “Aurora” environment the default desktop environment in SteamVR. Quest owners gain tethered Steam Link streaming over USB, while Steam Frame controllers now fall back to gamepad input in VR games that do not support native VR controls.
What changed in SteamVR 2.18?
SteamVR 2.18 is a reliability and compatibility release rather than a frame-rate upgrade. Valve lists fixes for streaming interruptions, Linux startup and GPU problems, controller bindings, and several dashboard issues. The release notes publish one specific timing figure—approximately 300 milliseconds—and do not claim an average latency reduction, higher frame rate, or percentage improvement in failures.
Streaming reliability and bitrate selection
- Additional fixes address Steam Link Error 17.
- Some packet-loss conditions that previously caused approximately 300 ms gaps in frame delivery are fixed.
- Valve fixed some causes of video corruption, checkerboarding and streams that become stuck.
- Automatic bitrate selection has been improved.
These changes target the cases where a connection remains established but the video stream briefly freezes, displays corrupted frames or chooses an unsuitable bitrate. They do not establish a universal latency or image-quality result for every network.

When streaming from Steam Frame, SteamVR can now expose eye-openness information through Open Sound Control (OSC). Valve says this requires SteamOS 0.4.3 or newer. Eye-openness support is planned for a future OpenVR SDK release, so applications that depend on an SDK-level interface may need to wait for that update.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can I use Steam Link over USB with a Quest headset?
Yes. SteamVR 2.18 adds tethered Steam Link streaming over USB for Quest headsets, provided the latest Steam Link app for Quest is installed. This gives users a wired alternative when wireless conditions produce instability or inconsistent bitrate selection.
- Update the Steam Link app on the Quest to its latest available version.
- Connect the Quest to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- Open Steam Link on the headset and pair it with the Steam account and host computer.
- Start SteamVR from the Steam Link session and check whether the wired connection is selected.
The release also improves host-framerate behavior when the headset frame rate has been overridden at the operating-system level. Valve’s notes do not specify a cable length, bandwidth rating or retailer, so those characteristics still depend on the cable and hardware you choose.
What does SteamVR 2.18 do for Steam Frame controllers?
Steam Frame controllers now default to gamepad input in VR games that do not provide VR-input support. That fallback is intended to make conventional gamepad-oriented titles playable without requiring a title-specific VR binding.

You can change the preferred mode for an individual game in either Steam Input settings or the VR Controller settings on that game’s Now Playing page. This is a per-game choice, so a title that has native VR bindings can continue using them while another title uses gamepad emulation.
What is the Aurora environment?
Aurora is the Steam Frame environment that SteamVR 2.18 now uses by default on the desktop. It can be disabled in SteamVR settings if you prefer the previous environment or a less animated presentation.
Aurora and Theater mode
Theater mode now supports content-aware Aurora color tinting, allowing the environment’s color treatment to respond to the content being viewed. This affects presentation rather than game rendering performance.

- Valve also fixed crashes that could occur while unblocking add-ons.
Which Linux problems does SteamVR 2.18 fix?
The Linux changes cover graphics-driver selection, reprojection, runtime compatibility and launch stability. They are particularly relevant to systems that combine integrated and discrete GPUs or run without systemd.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Async reprojection failures on AMD GPUs are fixed.
- GPU selection is improved on systems with both discrete and integrated graphics.
- Compatibility is improved on systems without systemd.
- Crashes caused by invalid texture sizes are fixed.
- OpenXR games that crashed at launch when SteamVR was not already running are addressed.
- SteamVR no longer requires the Linux driver support associated with
VK_KHR_maintenance9, improving compatibility with older graphics drivers.
These are compatibility fixes, not a promise that every Linux distribution, driver version or GPU configuration will work without further setup. If a problem remains, record the distribution, kernel, GPU driver and whether the system uses integrated or discrete graphics before troubleshooting.
What controller-binding fixes are included?
SteamVR 2.18 fixes recognition of render-model simulation bindings and corrects how their default values are displayed. It also restores bindings after a Steam-account change and addresses cases where bindings failed to load in games including Google Earth VR and Thumper.

After updating, revisit a title’s controller page if a binding appears to have reset. For a Steam Frame game that lacks VR input support, check the Steam Input or Now Playing VR Controller setting to confirm whether gamepad mode is selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you update to SteamVR 2.18?
The update is most relevant if you use SteamVR on Linux, encounter Steam Link Error 17 or intermittent stream corruption, want wired Quest streaming, or use Steam Frame with non-VR-input games. It is also worth installing if you want Aurora, gamepad navigation or the dashboard fixes.
Users with a stable setup should not expect a published frame-rate or latency uplift: Valve provides no benchmark, average-latency figure or failure-rate percentage for SteamVR 2.18. Features also have prerequisites, including SteamOS 0.4.3 or newer for Steam Frame eye-openness data and the latest Quest Steam Link app for USB streaming.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SteamVR 2.18 improve wireless Quest streaming too?
The release improves Steam Link’s handling of packet loss, stuck streams and automatic bitrate selection, which can help wireless sessions. USB tethering is a separate new path for Quest and requires the current Quest Steam Link app.
Can I turn off Aurora after installing SteamVR 2.18?
Yes. Aurora is enabled by default, but SteamVR’s settings include an option to disable it.
Does SteamVR 2.18 require SteamOS 0.4.3 for every Steam Frame feature?
No. Valve specifies SteamOS 0.4.3 or newer for eye-openness data exposed through OSC. The release’s controller fallback and other Steam Frame changes are listed separately.
