Valve’s October 26, 2026 Steam Client Preview/Beta update addresses two particularly disruptive problems: a crash when Steam resumes from suspend and updates that occasionally stop at 99 percent. The update calls the 99-percent change a workaround, so it should not be read as a guaranteed permanent fix for every stalled download.
The same build adds faster starts for Remote Play to a local computer and several chat, Big Picture Mode, and controller-navigation improvements. PC and SteamOS users can opt in through different settings paths, but the beta channel remains preview software; users who prefer maximum stability can wait for these changes to reach a stable client release.
What changed in the October 26 Steam beta?
Valve’s release notes list a suspend-resume crash fix, a workaround for occasional 99-percent update hangs, faster local Remote Play startup, and a set of communication and Big Picture Mode changes.

Why does Steam crash when I wake my PC or Steam Deck?
The beta specifically targets a crash that occurs when the Steam client resumes from suspend. Valve does not publish a crash frequency, affected hardware list, or reliability percentage, so the release note establishes the targeted failure but not how often it occurs or whether every resume-related crash has the same cause.
For a user who regularly sees Steam close or fail immediately after waking a computer or Steam Deck, this is the most direct reason to consider the Preview/Beta channel. If the crash has another trigger, the update may not address it.

Why is my Steam update stuck at 99%?
Valve says the client now includes a workaround for updates that occasionally hang at 99 percent. “Workaround” is important: the notes do not identify the underlying cause, promise a success rate, or state that all stalled updates will complete after installing the beta.

That makes the beta a reasonable option for someone repeatedly affected by this exact symptom, but not a guarantee. A 99-percent stall that continues after the update should be treated as an unresolved case rather than evidence that the beta failed universally.

How do I join the Steam Client Beta on a Windows or Linux PC?
Steam Support’s PC enrollment path is:
- Open Steam and select Steam in the top-left menu.
- Choose Settings, then open Interface.
- Find Client Beta Participation.
- Select Steam Beta Update.
- Restart Steam when prompted so the preview client can install.
The setting controls the Steam client channel, not a separate per-game beta. Check the selected channel after restarting if the new release-note changes do not appear.
How do I enable the beta on SteamOS or Steam Deck?
SteamOS uses a different menu path:
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Beta Participation.
- Choose the Beta channel.
- Restart when SteamOS prompts you.
The release notes describe the suspend fix and Big Picture-related changes in the same client build, making this channel relevant to Steam Deck owners. Valve does not provide a separate Deck-specific success rate for either headline fix.

Should I install the Steam beta or stay on stable?
Choose based on the problem’s urgency and your tolerance for preview software.
- Install the beta if suspend crashes or repeated 99-percent stalls are disrupting you now, and you accept that the channel is still a preview.
- Stay on stable if your system is working and avoiding unannounced beta-side regressions matters more than receiving these fixes early.
- Consider the beta for quality-of-life changes if local Remote Play startup, controller navigation in group chats, notification behavior, or per-friend voice levels are important to your setup.
Steam Support describes beta participation as early access to the latest features before they are released broadly. The notes do not give a date for when this build’s fixes will move to the stable channel.

What the release notes do not establish
Valve provides no numerical crash reduction, update-completion rate, latency measurement, supported-hardware list, or benchmark for this build. The only performance-style statement is the qualitative claim that local Remote Play starts streaming faster. Treat the 99-percent change as a mitigation until Valve documents more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 99% workaround repair an update that is already stuck?
It is part of the client that handles update behavior, but Valve does not say whether an update already sitting at 99 percent will resume automatically after switching channels. If the same update remains stalled, the release note offers no guaranteed recovery procedure.
Are these changes available in Big Picture Mode?
Yes. Valve lists the invitation widget, chat-layout work, gamepad-navigation fixes, rolled-up friend notifications, and per-friend voice levels for the Big Picture experience as well as the regular chat interface.

The wording is limited to connections to a local computer. It does not promise a speed improvement for remote computers or internet-based streaming.
Can I use the beta only for one game?
No. The enrollment controls select the Steam client’s Preview/Beta channel. The listed fixes and interface changes therefore apply at the client level rather than being enabled for just one title.
