To get Steam game-sale alerts, add each game to your Wishlist, then enable a notification channel for An item on my wishlist is on sale in Steam’s Notification Settings. Steam only sends a sale alert when the promotion meets its rules: at least 20% off, longer than eight hours, and applied to the game’s lowest-priced package. A verified email address is required for email alerts; mobile and desktop alerts also depend on their respective notification settings and permissions.

What do Steam Wishlist alerts tell you?

Wishlist alerts notify you about certain events involving games on your own Steam Wishlist. They can cover a qualifying discount, a game’s release, a transition from Early Access to full release, or—in a separate case—a public demo notification sent by the developer. They are useful for following games without buying or installing them, but they are not a personal price tracker: Steam does not provide a field such as “alert me when this game costs $15.”

Steam’s consumer page says it can notify you by email or through the mobile app when Wishlist games are on sale, and gives Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal as examples. Those are examples, not the full list of qualifying promotions. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also describes eligible weeklong deals, curated feature discounts, and custom discounts, subject to the discount rules below. See Steam’s Wishlist Notifications page.

The feature is part of Steam, so you do not need to install a game, purchase it, or follow its Community page to receive a Wishlist alert. The title must be on the Wishlist associated with the account you use for notifications.

What do you need before turning alerts on?

Have access to the Steam account whose Wishlist you want to track. If you want email alerts, make sure the account’s email address is verified. For phone alerts, sign in to the Steam mobile app and allow notifications in the phone’s operating system. You can set up the Wishlist and its notification preferences in either the desktop client or a browser.

  • Steam account: Sign in to the account where the games are wishlisted.
  • Games on the Wishlist: Add titles from their actual Steam store pages, then confirm they appear under Store > Wishlist.
  • Notification channel: Choose Email, Client Toast, Mobile App, or Feed for sale alerts, as available in your account’s settings.
  • Email verification: Steamworks documentation says only customers with a verified email address receive email notifications.
  • Device permissions: The Steam app and desktop client need permission to show notifications if you want banners or pop-ups.

How do you add games and turn on Steam sale alerts?

Set up the Wishlist first, then enable the channel you want. The current settings are organized around a Wishlist Activity table, though some Steam help pages still describe an older email-preferences route.

  1. Sign in to Steam. Use the account that should receive the alerts. Adding a game while signed out or on a different account will not populate the Wishlist you intend to monitor.
  2. Open the game’s store page. Use the actual product page rather than relying on a search-result preview. Select Add to your Wishlist.
  3. Confirm the game was added. Open Store > Wishlist in the Steam client, or open the Steam Store in a browser while signed in. Check that the title appears there.
  4. Open Notification Settings. In the Steam client, go to Steam > Settings > Notifications. On the account’s notification settings page, locate the Wishlist Activity table.
  5. Choose sale-alert channels. On the row An item on my wishlist is on sale, enable any of Email, Client Toast, Mobile App, and Feed that you want. Feed refers to the bell at the top of the Steam client.
  6. Check the category filter. Leave Only notify me about these wishlist categories set to All unless you deliberately want alerts limited to selected categories. If it is narrowed, titles outside the chosen categories will not trigger your alerts.
  7. Verify the email address if using email. Check the account’s details for a Verified status. If needed, in the Steam client go to Settings > Account > Change contact email…, then use the confirmation link Steam sends.
  8. Allow phone or desktop notifications. For mobile alerts, install the official Steam app, sign in to the same account, and allow Steam notifications in the phone’s settings. For desktop pop-ups, enable the relevant notification destination in Steam > Settings > Notifications.

Steam’s Steamworks help still describes an older route: open the account-name menu, select Account Details, then Manage Email Preferences. Some 2026 consumer guides report that this older email-preferences link now opens the unified Notification Settings page. A signed-in account may also expose the historical preferences route at store.steampowered.com/account/emailoptout. Labels can change; match the live account’s current Wishlist Activity labels rather than relying on an old screenshot or checkbox name.

Which Steam discounts trigger a Wishlist alert?

Valve’s Steamworks documentation sets three conditions for a sale notification: the discount must be at least 20%, last longer than eight hours, and affect the game’s lowest-priced package. All three matter. A large discount on only a premium edition does not qualify if the cheaper package remains at full price.

  • Discount size: Valve documents a minimum discount of 20% for a promotional sale notification.
  • Duration: The discount must run for more than eight hours. A discount lasting exactly eight hours does not meet the stated “over 8 hours” rule.
  • Package coverage: The lowest-priced package must be discounted. If a game has a $20 Regular package and a $30 Deluxe package, discounting Deluxe alone is not enough while Regular stays full price.

These are Valve’s Steamworks rules as documented in 2026; they are not a guarantee that every eligible alert will arrive instantly or reach every person. The consumer-facing page uses featured-sale examples, while Steamworks describes broader qualifying discount types. The criteria apply to the promotion, not to whether the price is attractive compared with the game’s previous prices.

How quickly do alerts arrive, and how often can Steam email?

Steam does not promise a consumer-facing delivery time. Valve’s Steamworks FAQ says email notifications may be sent over multiple hours depending on the number of recipients, and that one email may include several Wishlist titles. Its Wishlists documentation says emails typically go out within a few hours of a release or discount, but high-volume periods can take longer; if an email is held up for more than a week, Steam stops trying to send it.

There is also an email cooldown tied to an individual App ID. After an email about that game, Steam’s documented cooldown is about two weeks; Valve says high notification traffic, such as a seasonal sale, can extend the period. The cooldown applies to emails about the same App ID, including different kinds of emails. That means a launch or demo email can affect whether a later sale email arrives, and a second, deeper discount a week later may not generate another email.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a player receives an email about a 25% discount and the game drops to 50% off one week later, the second email may be suppressed by the cooldown. A launch-day email and a sale email for the same game can also overlap within the same cooldown period. Valve does not publish a delivery rate, open rate, or percentage of Wishlist owners who receive sale emails, so a missing message cannot be interpreted as proof that no one else received one.

Why did you not get a Steam Wishlist notification?

Start by checking whether the promotion qualified, then check the account and delivery channel. A game can appear to be “on sale” on its store page and still fail one of Valve’s notification conditions, or an otherwise valid alert can be suppressed by a cooldown, a category filter, or a delivery setting.

The discount did not meet the rules

  • A 15% discount is below Valve’s 20% minimum.
  • A 20% discount that lasts eight hours or less does not meet the requirement that a discount last over eight hours.
  • A Deluxe-only reduction will not qualify if the lowest-priced package remains undiscounted.
  • Steam does not notify Wishlist owners about Free to Keep promotions, according to Steamworks Free to Keep documentation cited by BotDrop.

A cooldown blocked another email

Check whether Steam sent you a launch, demo, or earlier sale email about the same game in roughly the previous two weeks. The wait may be longer during seasonal sales or other high-volume periods. The cooldown is one reason a price drop can be real and still produce no new email.

The account settings or device blocked delivery

  • Confirm that the game is on the Wishlist for the account receiving notifications.
  • Check that Email or the intended destination is enabled on An item on my wishlist is on sale.
  • Make sure the category filter is not excluding the game’s category.
  • For email, check that the address is verified and inspect spam or promotions folders.
  • For mobile banners, confirm that Steam is allowed in the phone’s notification settings and that a focus mode is not suppressing alerts.
  • For desktop pop-ups, check the client’s notification settings and operating-system notification permissions.

Marketing email preferences are separate from essential account mail: turning off marketing messages does not stop purchase receipts, Steam Guard codes, or other account emails. A purchase receipt therefore does not prove that Wishlist sale email is enabled. A store-wide message about a major Steam sale is also a different notification type from an alert about a particular Wishlisted game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the notification surface to narrow down the problem

If the Steam client’s bell shows the alert but the inbox does not, focus on email verification, preferences, and filtering. If the mobile app shows it but no phone banner appeared, check the phone’s app-notification permissions and focus settings. If no Steam surface shows a notice, recheck the sale’s percentage, duration, package, category filter, and recent emails about that App ID.

If you contact Steam Support, collect the game’s store link, the sale dates, screenshots of the relevant notification preferences, and a note about which notification surfaces did or did not show the alert. Do not remove the game from your Wishlist as a troubleshooting step; that does not identify which condition prevented delivery.

How can you organize a Wishlist without changing alert rules?

Steam’s Wishlist is also a personal tracking list, and its order or visibility settings do not replace the notification rules. You can drag titles or edit the number beside a title to reorder them; this changes your organization, not Valve’s sale or launch trigger.

Valve added custom Wishlist categories in July 2026, along with autocomplete search, demo-availability highlights, demo notifications, microtrailers on hover, and share links for categories or filtered views. Labels such as “Waiting for a sale” or “Birthday ideas” are user-created examples, not built-in presets. If your notification setting limits alerts to selected Wishlist categories, the category filter changes which games can notify you; simply reordering games does not.

Wishlist visibility follows the Community Profile privacy setting: Public, Friends Only, or Private. That setting does not turn sale notifications on or off. A shared link to a category or filtered view can reveal that view to people who have the link, so revoke the share link if it should no longer be available.

Can Steam alert you when a game reaches a target price?

No. Steam’s native Wishlist notifications have fixed promotion rules; there is no built-in personal price threshold such as “tell me at $15.” If you care about a particular price or want to compare prices across PC stores, add a separate tracker or keep a manual target list.

Use SteamDB for price history

SteamDB offers Steam price-history information and watchlists. Its FAQ describes creating an account and manually importing a Steam Wishlist. Price history helps you judge whether a current discount is unusually low, but it does not change Steam’s notification thresholds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use IsThereAnyDeal for configurable Waitlist rules

IsThereAnyDeal lets users import a Steam Wishlist into a Waitlist and set notification rules. The service describes coverage of more than 30 stores across regions; verify its current store coverage and regional availability before relying on it for a particular game. It is a separate service, not part of Steam.

Keep a manual target-price list

For a simple approach, write a maximum price beside each title and compare the live offer with that amount when you check the Wishlist, especially during major sales. Sorting by discount can make a broad sale easier to scan, but the displayed discount percentage alone does not establish that the current price is a historical low.

SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal are optional additions. If you only want a notification when a game meets Steam’s qualifying sale rules, Steam’s built-in Wishlist alert is enough; if you need price history or a personal threshold, use a tracker that offers those functions.

What should you check before buying from an alert?

Treat an alert as a notice that a promotion met Valve’s rules, not as a certificate that the offer is the game’s lowest-ever price. The amount you see depends on the signed-in Steam store and region, and prices, packages, and taxes vary by region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the game’s live store page while signed in to the account and region where you plan to buy.
  2. Inspect the package. Confirm which edition is discounted and compare it with the lowest-priced package if you are considering a more expensive edition.
  3. Check the displayed discount and end time. Promotions can expire; the notification is not a reservation of the price.
  4. Compare the actual regional price with your target. If you care about historical context, consult price history; Steam’s alert does not tell you whether the offer is an all-time low.
  5. Review the purchase details before checkout. Confirm that the selected edition and final regional price are the ones you intended.

A discount percentage is only one part of the decision. The specific package and your own regional price are the values that matter at checkout.

What are the most common alert mistakes?

  • Assuming Wishlist placement alone enables every channel: the sale row’s Email, Client Toast, Mobile App, and Feed destinations are separate settings.
  • Using a different Steam account on a phone: the app should be signed in to the account whose Wishlist you are tracking.
  • Assuming every price cut qualifies: Steam’s documented sale trigger has discount, duration, and package requirements.
  • Expecting a notification for every successive discount: the per-App-ID email cooldown can suppress a later alert.
  • Leaving a narrow category filter in place unintentionally: categories outside the selected filter remain silent.
  • Treating a store-wide sale message as a game alert: those are different notification types.
  • Assuming an alert means an all-time low: Steam does not certify historical lows in the notification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam send an email when a wishlisted game launches?

Valve documents email and/or mobile notifications when a game launches into Early Access or full release, and a further email when an Early Access game reaches full release. A launch notification can also affect the same game’s email cooldown for a later sale.

Can I get an alert when a Steam demo becomes available?

A developer can send one notification to people who wishlisted the associated game after its free demo becomes public. Valve’s documentation allows that notification to be issued within two weeks of the demo’s release; it is not an alert Steam sends for every demo automatically.

Does turning off Steam marketing emails stop receipts or Steam Guard messages?

No. Purchase receipts, Steam Guard codes, and other account-related messages are separate from marketing email preferences. Receiving one of those account messages does not confirm that Wishlist sale emails are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can friends see my Steam Wishlist if I share a category link?

Wishlist visibility follows your Community Profile privacy setting, but a shared link to a category or filtered view may reveal that view to people who have the link. Revoke the share link if you no longer want that view available.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
