Steam Scream V and Steam Next Fest serve different purposes: Scream spotlights horror and certain Halloween-centered games, with possible discounts, while Next Fest is for discovering and playing demos of unreleased games across genres. In October 2026, Next Fest ran October 19–26 and has ended; Scream V runs October 26–November 2 and is underway as of October 30. They meet at a handoff, but they are separate events—and Scream can include demos too.

What is the difference between Steam Scream and Steam Next Fest?

The core difference is the reason each event exists. Steam Scream is organized around a theme—horror, with a narrowly defined exception for games explicitly about Halloween—whereas Next Fest is organized around game status and playability: it showcases unreleased games that have a public demo.

That difference affects what a player is likely to find. Scream can surface released horror titles to buy, sometimes at a discount, as well as eligible upcoming games and demos. Next Fest is primarily a chance to sample unreleased games, regardless of genre; a full-game sale is not its defining feature.

Question Steam Scream V Steam Next Fest
Main purpose Spotlight horror and qualifying Halloween-centered games Help players discover and try unreleased games
Genre Horror focus, plus the specified Halloween-game exception Games across genres
Game status Released games can appear; upcoming games can appear too The base game must be unreleased for the relevant edition
Demo required? No universal demo requirement Yes: a publicly playable demo is part of eligibility
Discount required? No; discounts are optional Discounts are not the event’s defining feature

These are format distinctions, not guarantees about any individual listing. An event page can include different kinds of eligible games, and a game’s own Steam store page is the place to confirm whether it is on sale or has a playable demo.

Is Steam Scream a sale or a demo event?

It is a themed event that can combine shopping and discovery, not a sale in which every participating game must be discounted and not a demo-only festival. A released eligible game may be discounted, while upcoming games and demos may also be featured.

Valve’s themed-sale documentation says, “A discount is not required to participate in Steam themed sale events, though each event page will most prominently feature discounted games.” That distinction matters if you open Scream expecting every horror title to have a lower price: prominence for discounted games does not mean every listing is discounted. Check the price shown on the specific game’s store page before deciding to buy.

Nor should Scream be treated as a promise of demos for every game. Its theme determines relevance; the existence of a demo is a separate feature of a particular game. If trying a game before buying is your priority, confirm that the listing actually offers a demo.

What a Scream listing can represent

  • A released horror game that is simply being highlighted.
  • A released eligible game carrying a temporary discount.
  • An upcoming horror game with a store page and a playable demo.
  • An upcoming game whose base game is explicitly about Halloween and fits the event’s exception.

Those categories can appear together, so do not infer release status, price, or demo availability from the Scream badge alone. Open the title’s store page and read its current status.

Are Scream demos the same as Next Fest demos?

They can both let you play a demo, but they appear in events with different eligibility rules. Next Fest requires an unreleased base game and a publicly playable demo; Scream’s horror theme does not make a demo a universal entry requirement.

An unreleased horror game with a demo could fit the described criteria for both events. That is an eligibility overlap, not proof that any particular game appears in both, and it does not merge the events into one. Valve’s one-time participation limit is for a game’s participation in one Next Fest; it is not a stated ban on that game appearing in a themed fest.

Also, a demo’s presence during an event does not establish that it will remain available afterward. For a specific title, check its store page after the event rather than assuming the event schedule controls how long its demo can be played.

How to evaluate a demo

  1. Confirm that the demo button is still present on the game’s Steam page.
  2. Check whether the page identifies the game as upcoming or already released.
  3. Read the developer’s current description for scope or timing information instead of assuming the event window is the demo’s lifetime.
  4. If the game interests you as a future purchase, add it to your wishlist; wishlisting helps you follow a release, but it is not a condition for entering either event.

Which event is running in October 2026?

As of October 30, 2026, Steam Scream V is running; the October Next Fest has finished. Valve’s listed event windows meet at October 26, but the events are separate and do not overlap in time.

Event October 2026 dates and time Status on October 30
Steam Next Fest October 19, 10:00 a.m. PDT to October 26, 10:00 a.m. PDT (17:00 UTC at both ends) Ended
Steam Scream V Fest October 26, 10:00 a.m. PDT to November 2, 10:00 a.m. PDT (17:00 UTC at both ends) Underway; scheduled to end November 2

The shared October 26 boundary is the handoff: Next Fest ended at 10:00 a.m. PDT, and Scream V began at 10:00 a.m. PDT. The dates are specific to the 2026 editions, not a permanent annual schedule. Because Scream is time-limited, its event page and offers may change or disappear after November 2.

For readers outside Pacific Time, both listed endpoints are 17:00 UTC. Converting the time rather than relying on a local midnight assumption avoids missing the closing or opening hour. A page that still appears in Steam navigation after the deadline is not a promise that its featured prices or demos remain active.

Which event should you use?

Choose based on what you want to do, not just on which event is currently visible. For a released horror game you might buy, Scream is the more relevant place to look; for a chance to try an upcoming game before launch, Next Fest is the more direct fit when it is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Scream if you want a horror game to buy

Browse the event for eligible horror or Halloween-centered games, then inspect each title individually. The event’s themed placement does not itself confirm a discount, so compare the displayed price with your budget and check whether the game is released or still upcoming.

If the price is the deciding factor, record the amount shown on the game page rather than assuming that every featured title shares a common percentage reduction. Valve does not require a discount for participation, and no single Scream discount rate applies to all games. A title can be visible in the fest without being cheaper.

Choose Scream if you want themed discovery

Scream is also useful when you want a concentrated list of horror games, even if you are not ready to purchase. Use the event’s categories to find candidates, then separate released games from upcoming projects and demos. The horror focus is the organizing principle; it is not a technical guarantee about the game’s mechanics or content beyond the published eligibility standard.

Choose Next Fest if you want to try unreleased games

During Next Fest, look for games with playable demos and use the demo to decide whether a future release interests you. The event spans genres, so you can find projects that are not horror, including strategy, role-playing, simulation, action, or other categories. The important filter is that the base game remains unreleased for that edition and has a public demo.

Next Fest is therefore a sampling event rather than a shopping deadline. You can make a shortlist, play the available demos, and wishlist games you want to track. A wishlist is a practical follow-up, but Steam does not make it an entry requirement.

If you are looking for a demo after Next Fest

Search for the individual game on Steam and check its store page. Developers decide how long to leave demos available after Next Fest, so an October event demo may remain playable—or may no longer be offered—by October 30. The end of the event and the removal of a demo are separate decisions made at the game level.

What makes a game eligible for each event?

The rules explain why a horror game is not automatically a Next Fest game and why a spooky-looking game is not automatically eligible for Scream. The two events assess different things: theme for Scream, and release status plus a public demo for Next Fest.

Steam Scream V: a specific theme threshold

The 2026 Scream event focuses on horror games and also permits base games explicitly about Halloween, regardless of genre. A monster, gore, Halloween-themed downloadable content, or a temporary Halloween event by itself does not establish that the base game meets the stated theme threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction prevents an overly broad reading of “Halloween.” A game does not qualify on the basis of a seasonal skin or a brief in-game event alone under the 2026 rules summarized by Valve. Scream is the fifth edition of the horror event, but each edition’s published rules and dates should be treated as edition-specific.

Steam Next Fest: unreleased game plus public demo

Valve’s Steamworks documentation introduces its Next Fest eligibility list this way: “Each edition of Steam Next Fest is open to upcoming unreleased games that meet all of the following criteria:” The essential checks are that the base game is unreleased, it has a public base-game store page, it has a publicly playable demo, and it has not participated in an earlier Next Fest.

Those conditions are more precise than simply calling a game “upcoming.” A title with a store page but no public demo does not meet the demo condition; a released base game does not meet the unreleased-game condition. Developers need to distinguish whether a game qualifies from whether it will receive prominent visibility on an event page.

Eligibility is not the same as placement

Meeting a rule does not promise a particular position, category, audience size, or sales result. For Scream, relevance to the horror or Halloween standard is the threshold, while discounted titles receive the most prominent treatment on the themed event page. For Next Fest, satisfying the documented conditions makes a title eligible to participate, but it does not guarantee that every player will see or play it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should developers know about the distinction?

For developers, the practical decision is to check the rules for each event independently. Next Fest participation hinges on the unreleased base game, public store page, playable demo, and one-time participation rule. Scream V hinges on its horror or explicitly Halloween-centered theme; a generic spooky association is not enough under the 2026 criteria.

Next Fest developer checklist

  1. Keep the base game unreleased for the relevant edition.
  2. Publish a public store page for the base game.
  3. Make a publicly playable demo available by the event’s opening.
  4. Confirm that the game has not appeared in an earlier Next Fest.
  5. Decide how long the demo will stay available after the fest; Valve leaves that duration to the developer.

The one-time rule applies to Next Fest participation, not to every Steam promotion. A project that has used its Next Fest opportunity is not thereby barred from a separate themed event, although it still must meet that event’s own criteria.

Scream developer checklist

  1. Verify that the base game is a horror game or is explicitly about Halloween under the 2026 standard.
  2. Do not rely only on a monster, gore, seasonal downloadable content, or a temporary Halloween event to establish eligibility.
  3. Decide whether to offer a discount; participation does not require one.
  4. If a demo is available, make its status clear on the game’s store page, because Scream does not require every listing to have one.
  5. Separate release status from thematic qualification: both released and upcoming games can be relevant to Scream.

Do not carry rules from one Steam promotion into another without checking the relevant documentation. Valve documents seasonal sales and themed events separately, and the seasonal-sales rule about releasing a game 30 days before a sale should not be treated as a qualification rule for this themed fest. A Scream discount is optional, while Next Fest’s defining requirement is a publicly playable demo for an unreleased game.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “Scream” means every game is discounted. Discounts are optional, although discounted games receive prominent placement.
  • Assuming Scream is demo-only. Released games can appear, and upcoming games can appear alongside them.
  • Assuming every Scream title is horror. The exception is for base games explicitly about Halloween; a cosmetic event or downloadable content alone is not enough.
  • Calling Next Fest a sale. Its defining feature is trying demos of unreleased games, not buying discounted full games.
  • Assuming a Next Fest demo remains forever. Developers choose how long it stays available after the event.
  • Assuming a title appeared in both events. The eligibility rules allow a possible overlap for an unreleased horror game with a demo, but only the individual event listings can confirm actual participation.
  • Using the wrong time zone. The October 2026 endpoints are 10:00 a.m. PDT, or 17:00 UTC.

How often does Next Fest run?

Valve’s event calendar describes Steam Next Fest as running three times annually. That is a documented cadence, not a guarantee that every future date is already announced. Each edition has its own eligibility window and event page, so developers should check the current calendar rather than assume that a project can enter any date they choose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve lists February 22–March 1, 2027, as the next scheduled Next Fest after the October 2026 edition. Treat those dates as the currently listed schedule and verify the calendar for changes. A future edition’s rules may also differ in details from the October edition.

What comes after the October 2026 events?

After Scream V closes on November 2 at 10:00 a.m. PDT, its temporary merchandising and featured placement may no longer be visible. A participating game’s normal Steam store page remains the authoritative place to check its current price, release status, and demo availability.

Next Fest’s end does not automatically remove every demo, nor does it keep every demo active. The developer controls the post-event duration. If a demo disappears, look for a developer announcement or follow the game through its store page and wishlist rather than treating the event archive as a permanent demo library.

Bottom line for players and developers

Use Scream V when the theme matters: it concentrates horror and explicitly Halloween-centered games and may surface discounts on released titles, but no discount or demo is guaranteed for every listing. Use Next Fest when the experiment matters: it is Valve’s cross-genre showcase for unreleased games that have a public store page and playable demo. In October 2026, Next Fest ended at the exact moment Scream V began, so the two events are neighbors on the calendar, not one combined promotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a game join more than one Steam Next Fest?

No. Valve’s stated eligibility rules exclude a game that has participated in a previous Next Fest; this limit concerns repeat Next Fest participation, not themed events generally.

Do Next Fest demos stay playable after the event?

Not necessarily. Developers decide how long to keep a demo available after Next Fest, so availability is specific to the game rather than guaranteed by Steam’s event schedule.

Is every game in Steam Scream V discounted?

No. Valve says a discount is not required for a themed event, although discounted games receive the most prominent placement. Check the individual store page for the actual price.

Does Steam Scream V require a demo?

No. Scream can include released games, upcoming games, and demos, but a demo is not a universal entry requirement. Confirm demo availability on the specific game page.

Can an unreleased horror game appear in both events?

It could meet both sets of eligibility conditions if it is an unreleased horror game with a public demo, but that possibility does not confirm that a particular title was listed in both events.

What qualifies a game for the Halloween exception in Scream V?

The base game must be explicitly about Halloween under the 2026 criteria. A monster, gore, Halloween-themed downloadable content, or a temporary Halloween event alone does not establish eligibility.

What is the next scheduled Steam Next Fest?

Valve lists February 22–March 1, 2027, as the next scheduled edition after October 2026. Check the current event calendar for updates before relying on future dates.

The Bottom Line

In short: Scream V is a horror-themed event with optional discounts and possible demos; Next Fest is a cross-genre event built around demos for unreleased games. October 2026 Next Fest ended October 26, when Scream V began.
