Yes—but only in a narrow sense. A community demonstration reported on April 17, 2026 showed Steam’s interface running on a Nintendo Switch with Ubuntu Linux and ARM-related Proton and Steam Runtime components. It does not show that Nintendo or Valve officially supports Steam on Switch, or that PC games run well on the console.

What the Switch demonstration showed

Tom’s Hardware reported that a community member demonstrated the Steam interface on a Nintendo Switch running Ubuntu Linux. The report describes an experiment, not a consumer-ready feature or an officially supported setup.

Seeing Steam’s interface is not the same as confirming that games can be downloaded, launched, or played at acceptable performance. The report does not provide a verified list of working games, controlled performance measurements, complete installation instructions, or validated accessory requirements.

What Proton does—and what it does not do

Valve describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system. It uses Wine to facilitate this.” In other words, Proton addresses compatibility between Windows games and Linux; it does not, by itself, make every game compatible or solve differences between processor architectures.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The Switch uses an ARM-family platform, while many PC games are built for x86 processors. The reported setup involved Proton 11.0-Beta1 and FEX 2604. FEX is associated with translating x86 execution for ARM in this Linux setup, while Proton provides the Windows-game compatibility layer.

Valve’s Proton repository documents ARM64 Proton builds and notes that those builds cannot be used in x86 Steam running via FEX. That distinction matters: an ARM-related Proton build and an x86 Steam client running through translation are not interchangeable components.

Is Steam on Switch officially supported?

No official Nintendo or Valve support for this Switch setup is established by the reporting. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says Proton enables much of the Steam library to run on it. Valve’s page says it expects most users to use SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or on a device incorporating SteamOS; it does not present Nintendo Switch as a supported SteamOS device.

What to conclude if you want to play PC games on Switch

  • The demonstrated result is Steam’s interface on a community Linux installation, not a newly supported Switch feature.
  • The available reporting does not establish which, if any, specific games work reliably on that configuration.
  • There are no Switch-specific benchmarks in the cited reporting, so claims about frame rates, stability, or broad Steam-library compatibility are not supported.
  • There is no validated installation guide or parts list in the reporting. Treat instructions or hardware recommendations elsewhere as separate claims that need their own evidence.

The accurate takeaway is that Steam was shown running on a modified, Linux-based Switch setup. Whether PC games are practical to play that way remains unverified by the cited sources.
