To find out whether a Steam Next Fest demo works on Steam Deck, check the demo’s own Steam listing—not just the paid game’s badge—then install and play the entire demo on your Deck. A demo is a separate Steam app, and Valve’s normal compatibility review is for games; demos commonly show Unknown, which means untested rather than broken. Verify controls, text at 1280×800, launchers, audio, performance, saves and suspend/resume during a complete run. Change Proton only after a real launch or gameplay failure. This method works for demos left online after an event, but developers can deactivate them, so play important ones during the live week.
Why the full game’s Deck badge does not answer the demo question
Valve creates a demo as a separate App ID associated with the full game’s App ID. The demo may have its own store page, or the full game’s page may contain the download button. Either route installs the demo app, but the compatibility state belongs to that app. A Verified badge on the unreleased full game therefore does not certify its separate demo.
Valve’s documentation says: Demos are a separate App ID that is associated with your full game’s App ID.
The compatibility review process is also limited in scope: At this time, this process is only available for games. There is no compatibility review process for other app types, e.g. demos, DLC, tools, or soundtracks, other than in exceptional cases.
That is why an otherwise promising Next Fest demo often has no rating or shows Unknown.
Steam Next Fest is a Valve event built around playable previews. Valve describes it as Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.
It normally runs in February, June and October. The October 2026 edition ran from 19 October at 10:00 AM PDT (17:00 UTC) through 26 October at 10:00 AM PDT (17:00 UTC). Valve’s official announcement called the selection “thousands (literally) of demos,” and the demos were free during the event. As of 29 October 2026, that week has ended; the same checking method applies to demos that remain available.

How do I check if a Steam Next Fest demo works on Steam Deck?
Use the demo listing, read its own compatibility information, then perform a complete playthrough on the exact Deck, SteamOS build and Proton version you intend to use. Follow these steps in order.
1. Open the exact demo listing
Search the title from the Next Fest hub or from the game’s store page on your Deck or in the Steam client. Confirm that the result is the Demo, not the paid game, soundtrack, prologue, playtest or a similarly named tool. A Next Fest tile can open a dedicated demo page or the full game page with a demo button, so check the app type before installing.

You can select Add to Library without downloading, which is useful from the mobile app when you want to queue several titles for later. Installing a demo uses storage like a game. On a busy fest week, remove finished demos before the Deck’s internal drive or microSD card fills.
2. Read the rating attached to that demo
On the demo’s store page, open the Steam Deck Compatibility section. On the Deck, highlight the installed demo in Library and open its compatibility or game-information panel. Note the label and any failed requirements listed for Playable or Unsupported.

- On a store page: look for Steam Deck Compatibility.
- In the Deck Library: use the per-title rating icon or filter by compatibility.
- In a signed-in web library view: open your Steam Deck games.
- For Valve’s catalog of reviewed games, see Great on Deck. It is not an index of Next Fest demos.
Valve can show the individual requirements that were not met. Those details tell you whether the obstacle concerns controls, display, a launcher, Proton or another criterion, rather than leaving you with only a color or icon.
3. Interpret the four labels correctly
| Label | What Valve’s label means | What to do with a Next Fest demo |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.Valve’s requirements are met and no configuration work is expected. |
Still play the demo build briefly and check the sections that matter; the badge may refer to a related game rather than the separate demo app. |
| Playable | Your game functions on Deck/Machine, but may require manual work from the user.Examples include selecting a community controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard or using a touchscreen launcher. |
Read the failed requirements, perform the stated manual step and then run the whole demo. |
| Unsupported | Your game does not function on this device due to incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware components. |
Read the listed failure before trying changes. A local workaround does not turn the title into a Valve-certified game. |
| Unknown | This game has not completed the compatibility review process. Information about how the game will play on this device is unavailable. |
For Next Fest demos this is normal. Treat it as “not reviewed,” then perform your own complete check. |
Valve says ratings that have been tested apply to both LCD and OLED models: All titles that have been tested, maintain those ratings for both LCD and OLED models. Nothing changes for Steam Deck OLED!
That does not remove the need to check the actual demo app, because most demos are outside the review process.

4. Play the entire demo, not just the opening movie
A successful launch proves only that the executable started. Let every available section run on the handheld and mirror the areas Valve examines.
- Input: Navigate menus, movement, camera, combat or other actions, inventory and tutorials with the built-in controls. Button glyphs should match the Deck. If the demo requires text entry, verify that the on-screen keyboard appears or that a controller-friendly entry method exists.
- Display: Check dialogue, menus, subtitles and prompts at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution, or at 1280×720 where the title offers it. Look for clipped interfaces, unreadably small type, incorrect aspect ratios and broken video playback. Valve’s review requires 30 fps at 1280×800 with the game’s default configuration for a Verified result. Its smallest on-screen character must be at least 9 pixels high and readable from 12 inches (30 cm); Valve recommends 12-pixel text when possible.
- Launch flow: Wait through launchers, EULAs, sign-in screens and update prompts. A launcher must be usable with Deck controls or have a clearly documented touchscreen step. The game should not claim that Linux or the Deck GPU is unsupported.
- Performance and graphics: Play demanding scenes, change graphics settings, and watch for severe stutter, crashes, shader-compilation stalls or a frame rate that makes the demo impractical. Record the settings and Proton version if you need to reproduce a problem.
- Audio: Test music, effects, dialogue, volume controls and audio after suspend and resume.
- Progress: Create a save if the demo offers saving, exit and relaunch, and confirm that the save is still present. Not every short demo exposes a save system.
- Suspend/resume: Put the Deck to sleep during play, wake it and continue. A title that launches but loses input, audio or progress after resume needs further investigation.
- Online features: If multiplayer or an online mode is part of the demo, test that path rather than assuming an offline tutorial proves it works. Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye at the middleware level, but the developer must enable support for each game.
Native Linux builds use the Linux version when one is supplied. Windows demos normally run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on Linux using a modified version of Wine and graphics API implementations.
Should I force Proton for a Next Fest demo?
No. Do not force a different Proton version merely because the demo says Unknown. First launch it with SteamOS’s default Steam Play tool and change Proton only when the Windows build fails to start or behaves incorrectly.

- Highlight the demo in your Library.
- Press the Menu button and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select another Proton version already installed on the Deck, close Properties and launch the demo.
- Repeat the complete input, display, performance, audio, save and suspend checks. If the forced version is worse, disable the option and return to the default.
Valve describes Proton as a work in progress. A Proton change can fix one launcher or video problem and create another, so keep notes about the version and settings that worked. Never present a forced-Proton workaround as a Verified rating.

What can ProtonDB and community reports tell me?
Community reports are useful configuration clues, not Valve certification. Search for the exact demo name and favor recent reports that match your Deck hardware, SteamOS release and Proton version. Compare several reports because one person’s launch option may fail after a game patch or a Proton update.
Use reports to identify known launch options, video fixes, controller layouts or a troublesome launcher, then validate the result with the complete on-device checklist. Do not rank a ProtonDB Platinum or Gold report on the same scale as Valve Verified: the systems measure different things. If online anti-cheat is essential, an anti-cheat compatibility database can provide another clue, but only an actual connection through the demo answers whether that build’s online path works.
Do Next Fest demos stay available after the event?
Sometimes, but there is no guarantee. Valve encourages developers to leave demos online after a fest while allowing each studio to choose its release strategy. A developer may deactivate a demo immediately, so prioritize titles you care about during the live week and check the store page for a notice about post-event availability.
If a demo is deactivated after you added it, secondary summaries of Valve’s demo documentation report that it can remain visible in your Library for removal but cannot be launched again. A successful run before deactivation is therefore the only dependable way to answer whether that particular build works on your Deck.

Demo updates can also change the answer. Recheck after a demo patch, a Proton release, a SteamOS update or a launcher change. Valve’s review data changes as new titles and updates are processed, and a previously Unsupported reviewed game can move when software improves.
What Next Fest-specific traps should Deck players avoid?
- Assuming discovery equals compatibility: The event hub can surface thousands of titles, but a livestream, trailer or PC preview says nothing about Deck controls or Proton behavior. Install the demo and run it on the handheld.
- Installing everything: Every demo occupies storage. Uninstall completed experiments and consider a microSD card if you plan a large queue.
- Expecting a fixed browse order: Early event pages can randomize titles except for named lists and personalized areas. Later carousels may be personalized for logged-in users. This affects discovery, not compatibility.
- Assuming progress transfer: Some studios announce that demo progress carries into the eventual full game, but that is a per-game feature, not a Next Fest rule. Look for a specific announcement on that demo’s store news.
- Confusing a wishlist with ownership: Playing a free demo does not buy the full game. Add the unreleased title to your wishlist separately if you want release notifications.
Is there an official percentage of Next Fest demos that work on Deck?
No. Valve does not publish a pass rate for Next Fest demos, and ProtonDB totals change as users submit reports. The meaningful result is the evidence for the exact demo, Deck model, SteamOS build, Proton version and update state you checked.
Your result also cannot guarantee identical behavior on another Deck, a future SteamOS build or a later demo depot. Record the conditions of a successful run and recheck after major updates instead of treating compatibility as permanent.
How should I record a compatibility result?
For a useful note to yourself or other players, record the demo’s exact title, the Valve label shown on its own app, Deck LCD or OLED model, SteamOS version, Proton version, resolution, graphics preset and any manual launcher or controller step. State whether every demo section, online mode, save, relaunch and suspend/resume worked. This is more actionable than writing only “runs” or copying a community tier.

What is the practical decision rule?
Use the demo’s own badge as the official signal, then let a complete Deck run decide whether it is suitable for your play session. Verified means no extra setup is expected; Playable means follow the documented manual step; Unknown means perform the full checklist; Unsupported means read the failure and treat any workaround as experimental. Proton changes and community reports are troubleshooting tools, not substitutes for the demo-specific check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Steam Deck LCD and OLED owners need separate compatibility checks?
No. Valve states that a tested rating applies to both LCD and OLED models. You should still check the demo app itself, because the rating may belong to the full game and many demos have never entered Valve’s review process.
Can a deactivated demo still be launched from my Library?
Usually not. A demo that a developer deactivates may remain listed so you can uninstall it, while the launch action is unavailable. There is no promise that adding it to your account preserves play access.
Can demo progress carry into the finished game?
Only when that studio implements and documents the feature for that title. Treat transfer as a game-specific announcement and do not infer it from the fact that both apps are linked in Steam.
Does installing a demo place the full game in my library?
No. The demo and the paid game are separate Steam apps. You can play the free demo and wishlist the full game independently; downloading or completing the demo does not purchase the release.
