Buy the Steam Machine around your installed library, display, must-play games, and delivery situation—not around a headline resolution or a single specification. Valve announced two configurations: a 512GB model with a June 2026 US launch price of $1,049 and a 2TB model at $1,349. Both use the same processor, graphics hardware, memory, SteamOS experience, and microSD expansion. The 2TB version is the simpler choice for a large local library; the 512GB version makes sense if you rotate games, archive titles, or are comfortable adding removable storage. Before paying, check the live regional checkout total, reservation queue, bundle contents, game compatibility, and your TV or monitor inputs.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine 512GB | Smaller libraries, frequent uninstalling, buyers who will use microSD expansion | 512GB NVMe; AMD Zen 4 6-core/12-thread CPU; RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units | US launch price $1,049; separate controller bundle $1,128 (Valve, June 22, 2026) | SteamOS; other operating systems permitted | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Machine 2TB | Large installed libraries and households that want less storage management | 2TB NVMe; same CPU, GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 8GB GDDR6 VRAM as 512GB model | US launch price $1,349; separate controller bundle $1,428 (Valve, June 22, 2026) | SteamOS; other operating systems permitted | Oct 2026 |
These are dated launch prices, not a guaranteed October 30, 2026 checkout quote. Taxes, delivery, regional availability, reservation position, and what is included in a bundle can change the amount you actually pay.
What exactly is the new Steam Machine?
The current Steam Machine is a compact living-room PC Valve announced on November 12, 2025, rather than a revival of older products sold under the same general name. Valve describes it as an extension of PC gaming, so it uses a PC game library and PC-style software flexibility while presenting SteamOS Gaming Mode on a television or monitor.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The two retail configurations differ primarily in internal NVMe capacity. Both include a high-speed microSD slot, the same core compute hardware, and an integrated power supply. Valve lists a footprint of approximately 152 by 162.4 by 156 mm and a weight of 2.6 kg. Those dimensions matter when the unit must fit in a media cabinet, on a desk beside a monitor, or near a wired network connection.

Is the 512GB Steam Machine enough?
Choose 512GB when your library is modest, you regularly remove completed games, or you are willing to keep less frequently played titles on a microSD card. The usable space will be lower than the advertised capacity after SteamOS and system data are installed, so a buyer with several large modern games should not treat 512GB as hundreds of gigabytes available for game files.
When 512GB is a sensible compromise
- You mainly play a small rotation of competitive, independent, or older games.
- Your internet connection makes re-downloading an acceptable trade-off.
- You already own a compatible high-speed microSD card or plan to buy one.
- You prefer spending less up front and can manage which games remain installed.
What the lower capacity does not change
The 512GB model does not reduce the listed CPU, GPU, system memory, or graphics memory. It is not a lower-performance tier in Valve’s specifications; the compromise is local capacity and the amount of storage housekeeping you do.
Is the 2TB model worth the extra money?
The 2TB model costs $300 more at Valve’s listed US launch prices. That premium is easiest to justify when several people share the machine, your broadband connection is slow or capped, you keep large games installed for travel or outages, or you want to avoid moving games between internal and removable storage.
Recommended Free Tools
The extra capacity does not establish a higher frame rate or native-4K capability. Valve’s published hardware specifications describe the same six-core Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics processor with 28 compute units, 16GB of DDR5 system memory, and 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory for both configurations. No independent game benchmark is established for either model here.
Calculate the real premium
Use the live checkout total rather than the headline difference. Add regional tax, delivery, any controller, a storage card if you choose 512GB, and the cost of a cable or display upgrade you do not already own. A large microSD card can increase capacity, but its loading behavior should not be assumed to match internal NVMe storage because no comparative measurements are established.
What performance should you expect from the hardware?
Valve specifies an AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and twelve threads, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. These figures identify the platform; they are not a promise of a particular frame rate in every title. Game engine, graphics settings, patches, display resolution, and compatibility layers can all change the result.

Valve’s support guidance identifies 1080p as the default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes 1080p the most defensible baseline when comparing a game’s requirements with this hardware. Output support is different from rendering performance: a television may accept a 4K signal while a demanding game renders at a lower resolution or uses an upscaling mode.

Can Steam Machine play games at 4K?
It can connect to displays that accept higher-resolution output, but the available evidence does not support promising native 4K or a fixed frame rate for every game. Treat 4K as a title-by-title graphics decision, not as the default operating target.
Use this decision sequence
- Check the game’s Steam page and current compatibility information.
- Start at 1080p, the resolution Valve uses as its default and Verified test target.
- Raise output or rendering resolution only if the title’s performance and image-quality options support it.
- Use the display’s input information to confirm what signal it receives; do not infer in-game rendering resolution from that signal alone.
Will your Steam games work on SteamOS?
Many games can run through SteamOS’s Linux-based environment and compatibility tools, but no blanket guarantee covers every title, launcher, anti-cheat system, peripheral, or media application. Check each must-play game before buying, especially if it depends on a separate launcher, kernel-level anti-cheat, unusual copy protection, virtual-reality equipment, or Windows-only utilities.
Valve said in a November 2025 developer announcement that then-existing Steam Deck Verified games would automatically receive Steam Machine verification. That was a historical policy statement, not proof that every individual game works perfectly today. Verification status, patches, and third-party service requirements can change.
Make a must-play checklist
- Search every essential game in your Steam library and read its current compatibility notes.
- Confirm whether a publisher launcher opens correctly under SteamOS.
- Check multiplayer anti-cheat support and whether the game requires a Windows installation.
- Verify support for specialist controllers, wheels, headsets, mods, or capture software you plan to use.
- Decide whether installing another operating system is acceptable if one title remains incompatible.
SteamOS allows other applications and other operating systems, so the machine is more flexible than a closed console. That flexibility can require additional setup and may remove some of the convenience of the default Gaming Mode.
Can you use a Steam Deck microSD card?
Yes. Valve’s Steam Machine support guide says a microSD card used in a Steam Deck should work for its installed games without extra steps. This makes a card you already own a practical way to start with the 512GB model, provided it contains compatible game installations and has not been reserved for unrelated data.

Do not use the support statement to infer identical loading times. The card remains removable expansion, while the built-in drive is NVMe storage; no side-by-side loading measurement is established. Keep the card inserted while launching its games, and label cards if more than one person uses the machine.
Is Steam Machine better for a couch or a desk?
It can serve either location, but the surrounding equipment changes the buying decision. For a couch setup, confirm that the unit has airflow, that the power lead and display cable reach the cabinet, and that your controller can wake the machine. For a desk, check USB access, monitor input availability, and whether wired Ethernet is practical.
Space and connectivity checks
- Measure the shelf in all three dimensions: approximately 152 by 162.4 by 156 mm is the listed unit size.
- Leave unobstructed airflow around vents rather than enclosing the machine tightly in a cabinet.
- Plan for the included power supply and its cable length.
- Reserve a USB port for any keyboard, mouse, headset receiver, or other peripheral you need in Desktop Mode.
- Choose wired Gigabit Ethernet when stable latency matters and the router is nearby; otherwise check Wi-Fi 6E coverage at the seating position.
What display connections and multi-monitor limits matter?
Valve states that Steam Machine supports HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Match the connector to your monitor or television and use a suitable cable. An HDR screen is optional, not a requirement, but it can affect whether a game’s HDR output is useful to you.

If you plan a dual-monitor workstation, treat that as a Desktop Mode or operating-system question rather than assuming console-style multi-display behavior in Gaming Mode.
Does Steam Machine come with a controller?
Do not assume the standalone machine includes one. Valve lists separate controller bundles at $1,128 for the 512GB machine and $1,428 for the 2TB machine, compared with $1,049 and $1,349 for the machines alone at June 22, 2026 launch pricing.
Valve’s controller pairs with the machine’s built-in wireless adapter, so it does not need the separate puck used with some older arrangements, and it can wake the machine from the couch. Compare the exact contents shown for your region before ordering; the bundle price is not evidence that every configuration ships with a controller.

How long is the Steam Machine waitlist?
Valve’s June 2026 launch account describes reservation and waitlist queues rather than universal immediate stock. Eligibility required a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. An invited customer had 72 hours to complete the purchase.
Your region and account position determine the practical wait. The announcement specifically excluded South Korea from Steam Machine shipping, even though an earlier hardware-family announcement anticipated broader regional coverage. Do not rely on an old early-2026 shipping expectation; use the current reservation page and the invitation terms shown for your account.
Before joining a queue
- Sign in to the Steam account that will own the hardware.
- Check whether your region is eligible for shipping.
- Read the current reservation requirement and invitation-expiry window.
- Confirm the offered configuration, controller option, taxes, and delivery estimate at checkout.
- Keep payment details current so a 72-hour invitation does not lapse.
What should you budget beyond the machine?
Start with the dated machine price, then add only items your setup lacks. A controller is optional if you already have a compatible input device. A high-speed microSD card is useful for the 512GB model or for a second library. A suitable HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 cable may be necessary, and an HDR-capable screen is a display choice rather than a Steam Machine requirement.
Do not treat an accessory listing or a promotional bundle as a permanent price. Valve’s figures above are June 22, 2026 launch prices, and the live regional checkout is the authoritative amount for your purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the alternatives if the queue or price does not work?
Valve explicitly points buyers toward another living-room PC when Steam Machine availability or cost is unsuitable. That route can use different hardware and may require more work to achieve the same couch-friendly SteamOS experience.
Valve also describes SteamOS 3.8 on AMD-GPU PCs. That is different from buying hardware officially labeled Powered by SteamOS: Valve cautions that support for other hardware can be limited. Confirm driver, suspend/resume, controller, display, and update behavior before choosing a do-it-yourself system.

Steam Link streaming to another device is another way to use the Machine. It is a feature for streaming games from your own computer and does not imply that you need a separate game-streaming subscription.
How do you protect the machine and recover from software problems?
Use Valve’s official SteamOS recovery process if the installation becomes unusable. The recovery options include a full-wipe reinstall and a repair path intended to preserve personal content. Read each option carefully because a reinstall can remove installed games, settings, and other data even when the game licenses remain tied to your account.
Valve warns that opening or modifying the Machine can cause damage. Do not assume that replacing the internal SSD is simple, covered by warranty, or necessary. Follow the current service instructions for your region before opening the enclosure, and keep irreplaceable saves synchronized or backed up independently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam Machine run non-Steam applications?
Yes. SteamOS permits other applications, and Valve allows installing another operating system. The trade-off is that software outside Steam’s normal Gaming Mode may need keyboard-and-mouse setup or manual compatibility work.
Does Steam Machine need an internet connection to play games?
You need connectivity for downloads, updates, account checks, and many online games. Offline play can work for titles that support Steam’s offline mode after the required files and authentication have been prepared.
Can two people share one Steam Machine library?
The hardware can be used by multiple household members, but access follows Steam account and family-sharing rules rather than a console-style universal license. Check each account’s sharing eligibility and the publisher’s restrictions before planning a shared library.
What happens if a reserved unit is not purchased in time?
Valve’s launch terms gave invited customers 72 hours to complete the purchase. If that window expires, the reservation may be released and you may need to wait for another invitation under the then-current queue rules.
