Steam does not impose one universal limit for local co-op players, provide an automatic guest-save rule, or turn every PC game into native console cross-play. Those details belong to each game’s implementation. A game that supports Steam Remote Play Together can stream a local session from the owner’s computer to invited friends, while native Online Co-op runs separate game sessions according to the publisher’s own account, platform and player rules.

Before buying, check the store page’s exact multiplayer labels, the stated player capacity, the game’s save/profile documentation and any publisher cross-play policy. The guide below explains what each Steam feature means, how to play local co-op with someone remotely, and where the common assumptions fail.

How many players can play Steam local co-op?

There is no Steam-wide couch-co-op player count. The game developer decides how many local players are supported, whether the screen is shared or split, and which input devices work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the Overcooked! 2 Steam listing states that couch co-op or online play supports up to four players. That is a specification for Overcooked! 2, not a platform limit. Another game may support two players, four players, or no local multiplayer at all.

Steam’s Remote Play Together page describes a host inviting up to four additional participants, or potentially more with fast connections. Treat that as Valve’s invitation guidance, not as a promise that the game accepts five or more players. The game’s own capacity remains the limiting factor.

What the Steam labels mean

  • Shared/Split Screen Co-op: the game has a local multiplayer mode on one running copy.
  • Online Co-op: the developer implemented a networked mode in which players may run separate game sessions or connect through the game’s servers.
  • Remote Play Together: Steam can stream a supported local multiplayer session from the host computer to invited participants.
  • Steam Cloud: the game integrates selected files with Steam’s synchronization service; it is not a multiplayer or guest-save guarantee.

Read the explicit player-count sentence from the developer whenever possible. A user tag or a Remote Play Together badge is not a substitute for that statement.

Can I play a local co-op Steam game online with a friend?

Yes, if the game supports Remote Play Together. The host launches the local multiplayer game on one computer, Steam streams the game’s video and audio to the invited friend, and the friend’s controller or authorized keyboard and mouse inputs are sent back to the host.

  1. Check the store page. Confirm that the game lists Remote Play Together and that its local mode supports the number of people you need.
  2. Install and launch the game on the host computer. The host must run the game; the participant does not receive a separate copy of the game session.
  3. Open the Steam overlay. Use the friends list or the in-game overlay to invite the person to Remote Play Together.
  4. Have the friend accept the invitation. Steam will present the streamed game session on the friend’s supported client device.
  5. Configure inputs. Connect controllers to the appropriate computer, or authorize shared keyboard and mouse input when the game supports it. Assign each local player in the game’s own controller menu.
  6. Start the local mode. The host selects the game’s couch, shared-screen or split-screen option. Remote Play Together does not convert the game into a native online lobby.

Only the host needs to own and install the game for this feature. Video quality and input responsiveness depend on the host’s computer and the network path between participants, so a fast connection can matter more than the guest’s hardware.

What is the difference between Remote Play Together and native Online Co-op?

Remote Play Together streams one local session. Native Online Co-op uses a mode the developer built for networked players. They may have different ownership requirements, player caps, accounts and save behavior.

Question Remote Play Together Native Online Co-op
Where does the game run? On the host’s computer; guests receive a stream and send input. According to the game’s network design, often with separate instances or an online service.
Who must own the game? The host must own and run the supported copy; participants join the streamed session. Ownership, free-pass rules and account requirements are set by the developer.
Which mode is used? The game’s local shared- or split-screen mode. The game’s separately implemented online multiplayer mode.
Player capacity Bound by the local mode, despite Valve’s invitation guidance of up to four additional participants or more with fast connections. Bound by the game’s online player limit.
Hardware at the guest end A supported Steam client device capable of receiving the stream and handling input. Hardware that can run the game’s supported edition, unless the developer provides another arrangement.
Third-party accounts Usually follows the local game’s requirements; no separate online mode is created by Steam. May require a publisher account. For example, the It Takes Two listing specifies an EA Account for online play.

Valve lets developers enable or disable Remote Play Together for a local-multiplayer title. Therefore, a local co-op game can exist without offering the streaming feature, and a Remote Play Together badge does not describe the game’s native online architecture.

Does player two get a separate save in Steam local co-op?

Not automatically. Steam Cloud synchronizes files that the developer selected for a particular game and user. It does not promise an independent cloud profile for every local guest, nor does it guarantee that progress made by a guest follows that guest to another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s Cloud documentation says the Steam Client keeps integrated files synchronized across computers used by the same user. The developer controls which files are included, their account-specific paths and, in some cases, operating-system restrictions. A game may have no Cloud integration or may deliberately omit settings, local profiles or other data.

Three save situations to distinguish

  • One Steam account on several computers: Cloud can synchronize the files that the game has integrated for that account, subject to the game’s configuration and any sync conflicts.
  • Several local players on one host: the game may use a shared campaign, numbered local profiles or one account’s save. The game documentation must explain whether player-specific progress exists.
  • A remote participant using another account: joining the host’s stream does not prove that the participant receives a portable copy of the host’s save or earns progress in a separate cloud slot.

Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game. Valve’s support guidance also warns that unresolved synchronization problems can cause lost progress and that cross-operating-system behavior varies by game. Before a long campaign, look for the publisher’s save/profile explanation and resolve any pending Cloud conflict instead of choosing a file at random.

Is Steam Remote Play Together cross-platform?

It can be cross-device and cross-operating-system for the streamed session, but that is not the same as native PC-to-console cross-play.

The host’s computer runs the game. A guest may connect from a supported Steam client device even when that device cannot run the game natively. Steam Link destinations documented by Valve include mobile devices, PCs and Amazon Fire TV. This arrangement carries the host’s video output and guest input; it does not place a PlayStation or Xbox edition directly into the game’s PC online lobby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For native cross-play, consult the publisher’s platform policy for the specific game. Check which editions can share an online lobby, whether cross-play must be enabled in settings, and whether accounts or subscriptions are required. Do not infer console support from a Remote Play Together badge.

Can Steam Deck handle couch co-op?

Yes. Valve documents Bluetooth and USB controller connections on Steam Deck, and Remote Play Together is another option when the game supports it. The Deck does not override the game’s player limit or input design.

For a living-room setup, pair each wireless controller in the Deck’s Bluetooth settings or connect wired controllers through the appropriate USB connection or hub. Valve’s input guidance discusses Xbox controllers and recommends PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controllers as a starting point for developers working with Deck input, but compatibility still depends on the game and controller mode.

After connecting controllers, open the game’s controller configuration and assign each device to a local player. Some titles require a controller for player one, while others accept keyboard input for one participant and controllers for others. The game’s own instructions take precedence over general Steam Input compatibility.

How should I check a game before buying it?

Use the following preflight instead of relying on a single feature badge.

  1. Read the feature labels. Note whether the listing separately shows Shared/Split Screen Co-op, Online Co-op, Remote Play Together and Steam Cloud.
  2. Find the explicit capacity. Look for wording such as “up to four players” and confirm whether it applies to couch play, online play or both.
  3. Identify the input model. Check whether every participant needs a controller, whether keyboard sharing is supported and whether the title supports Steam Deck input.
  4. Read save instructions. Determine whether progress is tied to the host, a local profile, a platform account or a publisher account.
  5. Verify online prerequisites. Native online modes may require a third-party account, a separate launcher or platform-specific services.
  6. Check cross-play separately. Look for a publisher statement covering the exact PC, console and operating-system combinations you intend to use.
  7. Confirm Remote Play Together availability. Developers can disable the feature even when a game has local multiplayer.

What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?

The invitation option is missing

Confirm that the game currently lists Remote Play Together and that Steam is running the supported edition. If the developer has disabled the feature, use the game’s native online mode if available or play locally on the host machine.

The guest can see the game but cannot control it

Open the Remote Play session’s input permissions and authorize the guest’s controller or keyboard and mouse. Then check the game’s local-player assignment screen; streaming a controller does not automatically add that device as player two.

The game accepts fewer people than expected

Use the game’s stated local capacity. Valve’s invitation wording describes how many people may join a host, while the title may support only two or four local players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud reports a conflict

Stop launching the game on another computer, compare the timestamps or file locations shown by Steam, and choose the copy that contains the intended progress. If the game has its own backup or profile-export instructions, follow those before deleting anything.

A console friend cannot join the PC lobby

Determine whether you are attempting Remote Play Together or native online multiplayer. Remote Play Together streams the PC host’s local session; native console-to-PC play requires explicit publisher cross-play support for that game.

How we interpret Steam’s co-op features

The reliable unit of analysis is the individual game’s documented behavior, not a platform-wide assumption. Player count comes from the title’s own specification; Remote Play Together capacity comes from Valve’s feature description; save behavior comes from the game’s integration with Steam Cloud; and cross-play comes from the publisher’s platform policy. Keeping those sources separate prevents a local badge from being mistaken for online networking, a Cloud badge from being mistaken for guest ownership, or a streamed session from being mistaken for console cross-play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a guest earn achievements during Remote Play Together?

Do not assume that every participant receives achievements. Achievement attribution is controlled by the game and the account running its session, so check the title’s documentation or support page for its policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam Families replace Remote Play Together?

No. Steam Families concerns library access and household sharing, while Remote Play Together is a streaming feature for a running local multiplayer session. They solve different problems and have different eligibility rules.

Can I use one keyboard and several controllers for local co-op?

Sometimes. Input combinations are game-specific: a title may accept shared keyboard input, require a controller for each player, or reserve keyboard input for player one. Check the game’s control settings before buying additional hardware.

Will Steam Cloud work when the host and guest use different operating systems?

Only when the developer configured Cloud paths and synchronization for those operating systems. Valve documents developer-controlled restrictions, so a Cloud badge alone does not establish portable progress between every OS combination.
