Steam has a new game recording tool, and it works on Steam Deck. Steam Game Recording can capture gameplay in the background or on demand, let you mark and trim moments, save clips permanently, export selected clips as MP4 files, and share them. It does not record the SteamOS desktop or replace OBS for streaming.

Valve introduced Game Recording for Steam and Steam Deck in beta in June 2024, moved it into the Steam Deck stable client on November 5, 2024, and has continued shipping Deck-specific fixes. The feature is therefore no longer a beta-only experiment, although its compatibility still depends on the game supporting the Steam Overlay.

Key takeaways

  • Steam Game Recording is built into Steam Deck and became available to all users in the stable Steam Deck client on November 5, 2024.
  • Background recording uses a configurable storage allocation and overwrites older footage when the buffer fills, so a moment must be turned into a saved clip before it disappears.
  • Steam exports a selected clip as an MP4; the entire rolling background buffer is not automatically presented as a folder of ordinary MP4 files.
  • Steam Game Recording captures gameplay from supported Steam games, but it does not capture the Steam Deck desktop or unrelated application video.
  • Steam Game Recording is a good replacement for a separate casual clip recorder, but it is not a replacement for OBS when you need streaming, scenes, webcam overlays, or advanced audio routing.

What is Steam Game Recording on Steam Deck?

Steam Game Recording is Valve’s built-in system for capturing, reviewing, marking, trimming, saving, exporting, and sharing gameplay from the Steam client. Valve describes the feature as a way to record gameplay in the background or manually, browse a timeline, create clips, and share those clips through Steam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Steam Deck, recordings and clips are available from the Media tab in the Steam menu. Valve’s Steam Game Recording support documentation says the Deck provides the same core recording content and functions as the desktop Steam client, although the exact arrangement of controls can change as the Steam Client interface is updated.

The practical difference from a conventional screen recorder is that Steam keeps a gameplay timeline rather than immediately giving you a normal video file for every second captured. You can later select the relevant section, save it as a clip, and export that clip as an MP4.

Does Steam Game Recording really work on Steam Deck?

Yes, Steam Game Recording works on Steam Deck without requiring OBS, a Decky plugin, or another third-party recorder. Valve introduced the feature in the Steam Deck beta channel on June 26, 2024, then included it for everyone in the Steam Deck stable client update published November 5, 2024.

Older articles may call Game Recording a beta feature because they predate the stable release. The feature has also continued receiving maintenance. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.10 update notes, listed in June 2026, include a fix for a possible session crash involving Game Recording and certain maximum-video-height settings.

Steam Game Recording is not guaranteed to work with every game or launch configuration. Valve’s official documentation centers on games played through Steam that support the Steam Overlay. Older games, games with unusual launch arrangements, and titles where the Overlay does not function may fail to record correctly.

Non-Steam game support should be treated as configuration-dependent rather than universal. Third-party testing, including the Steam Deck HQ Game Recording guide, has reported that recording can work with some non-Steam games, but Valve’s official compatibility wording is focused on Steam games and Overlay support.

How do you enable Steam Game Recording on Steam Deck?

Open Steam’s Settings, find Game Recording, and choose whether Steam should record in the background or only when you manually start recording. If Game Recording is not easy to find in Game Mode, use Steam Deck Desktop Mode and look for Settings > Game Recording in the desktop Steam client.

  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Game Recording.
  4. Choose Record in Background for a rolling buffer, or choose Record on Demand/Record Manually for capture only after you activate it.
  5. Set the recording location and the storage allowance for background footage.
  6. Configure audio sources and shortcuts if necessary.

Valve’s Steam Game Recording announcement and setup guide documents the recording modes, storage settings, audio options, and shortcut controls. The same Game Recording controls can also be reached during gameplay through the Steam Overlay and its Game Recording tab.

To view a recording in Steam Deck Game Mode, press the Steam button and select Media. On desktop Steam, recordings are available through View > Recordings & Screenshots.

Which Steam Game Recording mode should you use?

Choose background recording when you want to save an unexpected moment after it happens. Choose manual recording when you want to control storage use and already know when recording should begin.

Mode How it works Best for Main trade-off
Off / Don’t record Game Recording is disabled. Users who never capture gameplay or need to avoid recording-related storage and resource use. You cannot recover a moment that was not recorded.
Record in Background Steam continuously records gameplay into a storage-limited rolling buffer and overwrites older footage as the buffer fills. Unexpected victories, bugs, discoveries, and funny moments. Unsaved footage can disappear, and the buffer uses storage while you play.
Record on Demand / Record Manually Steam records only after you activate recording. Planned clips, longer sessions, or users who want tighter control over storage. You must start recording before the moment occurs.

Background recording is not permanent archival recording. A moment visible on the timeline remains vulnerable to being overwritten until you create and save a clip from it.

How do you save an unexpected gameplay moment?

Enable Record in Background, configure a storage limit, and create a clip from the timeline as soon as possible after the moment occurs. Saving a clip is the step that protects the selected section from the rolling buffer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Before playing, enable Record in Background.
  2. Set a storage allowance appropriate for the amount of footage you want to keep available.
  3. Play normally.
  4. After an unexpected moment, open the Steam recording timeline from the Steam Overlay or the recording viewer.
  5. Move the start and end points to select the part of the timeline you want.
  6. Choose Clip or Trim, then save the clip permanently.
  7. Use Export Video File if you need a normal video file outside Steam.

Simply opening the timeline does not permanently preserve the moment. Steam’s official recording support workflow separates temporary background footage from saved clips and explains that clips can be exported after selection.

How do Steam Game Recording markers work?

A timeline marker gives you a quick place to return to later, which is useful when you do not want to stop and trim footage immediately after an event.

On desktop Steam, Valve documents Ctrl + F12 as the shortcut for adding a timeline marker. The shortcut can be customized; the documented shortcut appears in Steam’s Game Recording support instructions.

For Steam Deck, Steam Deck HQ reports these controller shortcuts as defaults:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam + Y: add a timeline marker
  • Steam + Up: create a clip
  • Steam + A: toggle manual recording

These Deck combinations are reported defaults, not immutable Valve guarantees. Steam Input can remap them, custom controller layouts can change them, and a future Steam Client revision may alter the defaults. If a shortcut does nothing, check the current Game Recording shortcut settings and the active Steam Input layout.

Markers supplied by the game are a separate feature. Steam Game Recording is the capture system; Steam Timeline is optional game-level integration that allows supported games to add events or markers to the recording timeline. A game can be recordable without providing game-specific Timeline events.

How do you export a Steam Deck recording as an MP4?

Create or select a clip first, then choose Export Video File; Steam exports the selected clip as an MP4. Steam initially stores the recording and timeline in an internal raw format, so users should not expect the entire rolling buffer to appear automatically as a convenient collection of MP4 files.

  1. Open the recording in the Deck’s Media tab or in Steam’s desktop recording viewer.
  2. Select the relevant section of the timeline.
  3. Create and save the clip.
  4. Choose Export Video File.
  5. Wait for processing to finish, then locate the exported MP4 in the selected recording or export location.

If export fails, check available storage in both the recording location and the destination. A manual recording test can also distinguish an export problem from a problem with the game or background buffer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you move clips off Steam Deck?

The simplest cross-device method is to export the clip as an MP4 and transfer that file manually. Steam also provides Steam-based sharing and transfer options for supported clips.

  • Send to another device: transfer the clip to another PC or Steam Deck recently associated with the same Steam account.

The exact recent-device eligibility window and sharing wording can vary by client and localization, so check the current text shown in Steam before relying on a transfer. Valve’s localized Game Recording support documentation describes the device-transfer qualification.

What does Steam Game Recording capture?

Steam Game Recording captures gameplay from supported games launched through Steam, with configurable audio sources. Steam can include game audio and can optionally include audio from other programs, such as voice chat, depending on the configured audio options.

Steam Game Recording does not capture desktop video or unrelated application video. The feature is therefore unsuitable for recording the Steam Deck desktop, a browser tutorial, system settings, emulator menus, Discord video, or a general application walkthrough. Valve’s support documentation explains the game-focused capture limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Game Recording also depends on the Steam Overlay for supported gameplay. If the Overlay does not open in a particular game, recording may not work correctly. A short test clip is especially important when microphone audio, voice chat, or another program’s audio matters.

Does Steam Game Recording reduce Steam Deck performance?

Steam Game Recording can use storage, encoder resources, system resources, processing time during clip export, and potentially additional battery power. Valve says the feature is designed to reduce capture overhead by using hardware video-encoding capabilities on supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics hardware, but that statement is not a promise of zero performance impact on every Steam Deck game.

Performance depends on the game, recording quality, resolution, frame rate, maximum video height, storage location, and the Deck’s available resources. Avoid assuming that a setting that works smoothly in one game will behave identically in another.

For a practical setup, start with a modest background buffer, test a demanding game, and check frame pacing, battery drain, storage use, and audio before committing to longer sessions. Do not use an unverified “hours per gigabyte” estimate: storage consumption varies with the selected settings and the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Additional storage can be useful for frequent recording, particularly if the Deck’s internal space is already limited. A Steam Deck storage expansion should be chosen according to the desired buffer length, recording settings, and other games installed; occasional short clips do not automatically justify buying extra storage.

What are Steam Game Recording’s main limitations?

Requirement or limitation What it means on Steam Deck
Steam game and Overlay support Recording is aimed at games played through Steam with the Steam Overlay available. Older or unusual games may not work correctly.
Temporary background buffer Older footage is overwritten as the configured storage allocation fills, so important moments must be saved as clips.
Clip-based MP4 export You normally select and create a clip before using Export Video File to produce an MP4.
No desktop video capture The tool does not record the SteamOS desktop, browser windows, or unrelated application video.
Limited production features Steam Game Recording does not provide OBS-style scenes, webcam layouts, streaming controls, or full production-oriented audio routing.
Optional Timeline integration Not every game adds game-specific event markers, even when gameplay recording works.
Configurable shortcuts and settings Deck shortcuts, audio behavior, quality controls, and UI labels can be remapped or changed by Steam Client updates.

Steam Game Recording versus OBS, NVIDIA App, Xbox Game Bar, and Decky Recorder

Steam Game Recording is the most convenient option for a Steam Deck owner who wants ordinary gameplay clips. The alternatives become more attractive when the job involves desktop capture, streaming, webcam video, advanced audio, or Windows-specific hardware features.

Tool Best use Advantages Why it may be the wrong choice
Steam Game Recording Saving unexpected moments from supported Steam games on Steam Deck. Built into Steam, background and manual modes, timeline markers, clip trimming, MP4 export, and Steam device sharing. Does not capture the desktop and is not a full streaming or production suite.
OBS Studio Streaming, webcam overlays, scenes, desktop tutorials, and advanced audio routing. Broad production control and support for complex capture layouts. More setup and complexity than a Deck owner needs for a quick gameplay clip.
NVIDIA App capture Windows PC gameplay, application, or desktop capture on compatible NVIDIA hardware. NVIDIA documents manual recording, replay-style capture, hotkeys, desktop capture, codecs, and capture settings. Not a direct Steam Deck replacement and not intended for AMD-only, Linux-first, or Deck-native workflows. See NVIDIA’s feature documentation.
Xbox Game Bar Simple game or application recording on Windows. Built into supported Windows installations and saves MP4 captures in the Videos/Captures folder. Does not provide the Steam Deck Game Mode workflow or Steam Timeline integration. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording instructions.
Decky Recorder and similar plugins Alternative controls or older Deck workflows. May offer a different interface or behavior for users who already use Decky Loader. Compatibility and maintenance can depend on the SteamOS channel, Steam Client version, Deck model, and plugin status; Valve’s built-in feature usually requires less maintenance.

Steam Game Recording is the best fit when the priority is “save that moment” convenience. OBS remains the better choice for streaming or a produced video, while NVIDIA App and Xbox Game Bar are primarily relevant to compatible Windows PCs rather than Steam Deck Game Mode.

What should you do if Steam Game Recording does not work?

Use the following checklist to isolate the most common recording, storage, audio, and export problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the mode: confirm Game Recording is not set to Off.
  2. Check the Overlay: open the Steam Overlay in the affected game. If the Overlay does not work, recording compatibility may also be affected.
  3. Restart the game: close and relaunch the game after changing recording settings.
  4. Check storage: confirm that the configured recording location exists and has enough free space.
  5. Reduce capture settings: if the Deck becomes unstable, lower maximum video height, quality, or frame rate. Valve has shipped Deck fixes for recording-related stability issues, including the maximum-video-height crash fix documented in SteamOS 3.8.10.
  6. Test manual recording: a short manual recording can show whether the problem is limited to the background buffer.
  7. Check shortcuts: verify that the shortcut is assigned and is not conflicting with a game action or Steam Input layout.
  8. Check audio: make a short test clip and confirm game audio, microphone audio, and voice-chat audio are present as intended.
  9. Update Steam and SteamOS: recording behavior and fixes are delivered through Steam Client and SteamOS updates.
  10. Check the correct viewer: look in Steam Deck’s Steam > Media tab or desktop Steam’s View > Recordings & Screenshots.
  11. Export manually if sharing fails: create an MP4 and transfer the file instead of relying on a temporary Steam share link.

Valve’s official Game Recording support page is the best reference for the current controls and workflow. The checklist above is practical troubleshooting rather than a single official Valve repair procedure.

Is Steam Game Recording worth using on Steam Deck?

Steam Game Recording is worth enabling on Steam Deck if you mainly play Steam games and want a low-maintenance way to save unexpected gameplay moments. Background recording solves the central problem of replay tools: the player can decide after an event that the event was worth keeping.

Steam Game Recording is less suitable when you need a full desktop video, a webcam, multiple scenes, live streaming, or detailed control over several audio sources. Those jobs still favor OBS or an appropriate desktop capture tool.

The most important habit is to save a clip before the background buffer overwrites it, then export the selected clip as an MP4 if the footage needs to leave Steam. With that limitation understood, Valve’s built-in recorder is a practical alternative to installing a separate Deck recording plugin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Steam Game Recording record non-Steam games on Steam Deck?

Steam Game Recording may work with some non-Steam games, but non-Steam compatibility is configuration-dependent rather than universally guaranteed. Valve’s official documentation focuses on games launched through Steam that support the Steam Overlay, while third-party testing has reported success with some non-Steam configurations.

Does Steam Game Recording record the Steam Deck desktop?

No. Steam Game Recording is designed to capture supported gameplay and does not capture the SteamOS desktop or unrelated application video. Use a general desktop recorder such as OBS when you need to record browser windows, system settings, or other applications.

Does Steam Game Recording save the entire background buffer as an MP4?

No. Steam normally stores the background recording in an internal timeline format. You select the relevant section, create a clip, and use Export Video File to export that selected clip as an MP4.

Does Steam Game Recording replace OBS on Steam Deck?

Steam Game Recording can replace OBS for simple gameplay clips, but it does not replace OBS for streaming, webcam overlays, scene switching, desktop capture, or advanced audio routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Steam Game Recording is a real, built-in Steam Deck feature and a strong choice for casual gameplay clips. Enable background recording, protect important moments by saving them as clips, and export those clips as MP4 files when needed. Use OBS or another full recorder for desktop capture, streaming, webcams, and production-heavy projects.
