Use Steam’s built-in Storage manager. In the desktop client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, click + to add a library folder on the other drive, and choose that library when installing future games. To reclaim space already used on your first drive, select its library, select one or more games, and click Move. Adding a library by itself does not move existing files, and you do not need to relocate the Steam application for a per-game move.

Check free space in Windows first, keep the destination available until Steam finishes, and verify the result afterward. Steam’s official procedure covers game libraries; moving the entire Steam installation is a separate, higher-risk operation.

What is the difference between adding a library and moving a game?

Adding a library creates a destination for new installations. Moving a game transfers an installation that already occupies space on another library. You normally need both actions when your system drive is full: add the second drive as a library, then move selected games into it.

Action What changes What does not change
Add a library Steam can install future games in the new folder Existing game files remain on their current drive
Move an existing game Steam transfers that game’s library files to another library The Steam client itself stays where it is; saves may be stored elsewhere
Move the whole Steam installation The client and its installation structure are relocated This is not required for ordinary game-space cleanup and needs additional backup care

Steam describes an alternate library as a location you can choose when installing games in its official moving-installation guide. Treat the library and the client as separate things: moving a 150 GB game does not require moving Steam itself. A library is simply a managed folder containing game installations; the desktop application can remain on the original drive while individual games live elsewhere.

This distinction also prevents a common mistake: changing a Windows storage preference does not automatically change Steam. The Windows “Where new content is saved” setting covers broad Windows content categories, whereas Steam’s Storage page controls Steam library destinations.

How should I check the drives before moving Steam games?

Open File Explorer > This PC and inspect the available space on the source and destination drives. The destination must have enough room for the selected installation, and Windows must still recognize the drive while Steam is working.

  1. Identify which drive currently contains the game. Steam’s default Windows library is commonly under C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but do not assume every installation uses that path. A previous custom library may be on another volume.
  2. Confirm the second drive appears in File Explorer with a drive letter and usable capacity. If it is missing in Windows, Steam cannot use it until the Windows connection or drive problem is resolved.
  3. Leave additional working room rather than filling the destination to its limit. The exact space required is the size Steam reports for the selected game, not a universal percentage or fixed number. Multiple games can be selected only when their combined requirement fits.
  4. Close applications that might lock files, and avoid disconnecting either drive during the move. A laptop should remain connected to power for a long transfer.
  5. Note the source drive’s free-space figure before starting. That gives you a useful comparison after Steam finishes, although the recovered amount may differ from the game’s displayed size because other Steam and Windows files remain.

Do not delete the old game folder manually to make room. Steam should complete the transfer and update its library records first; manual deletion can leave an installation that Steam cannot validate. If you need to stop, pause or cancel through Steam where available rather than pulling the drive or ending the process abruptly.

How do I add another drive as a Steam library?

Adding the library takes place in Steam’s Storage settings, not in Windows’ “Where new content is saved” control. Microsoft’s Windows setting governs broad Windows content categories; Steam’s own library manager chooses where Steam games go.

  1. Open the Steam desktop client and sign in.
  2. Select Steam > Settings.
  3. Choose Storage in the settings sidebar.
  4. Click the + button beside the listed storage locations.
  5. Select the destination drive and create or select a Steam library folder there. Use the existing Steam library if that drive already contains one.
  6. Confirm the new library so it appears in Steam’s Storage list.

The new location is now available in the install dialog. When you select Install for a new game, choose the added library instead of the original one. If you stop after adding the library, no existing game files are moved and the original drive will not gain space.

You can keep more than one library and decide per game. Before clicking the final install button, check the destination shown in the dialog; otherwise Steam may continue using the default library. The Storage page is also where you can see which drive currently owns each installed title.

How do I move an installed Steam game without reinstalling it?

Use the Move command in Storage. This is Steam’s supported way to relocate an existing installation without downloading the game again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Return to Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. In the drive or library list, select the location that currently holds the game.
  3. Tick the game you want to relocate. You can select multiple games if the destination has enough room.
  4. Click Move.
  5. Choose the destination library you added earlier and confirm.
  6. Wait for Steam to finish copying and updating the library. Do not shut down the computer or remove either drive during the operation.

Steam handles the library registration as part of this process, so a separate uninstall and download is not needed. The duration depends on the amount of data and the drives involved; Steam does not promise a fixed transfer time or a particular speed improvement.

Afterward, open the game’s Steam page and confirm that it shows as installed. Check File Explorer > This PC again to compare free space on both drives. The amount recovered should correspond to what Steam moved, but other folders, workshop content, shader caches, screenshots, downloads, and Windows files can still occupy the old drive.

If you are moving several large games, do them in batches that fit the destination. A library can contain games on different drives; Steam’s Storage page is the authoritative place to see which library each installation uses. If a transfer is interrupted, reconnect both drives, inspect the Storage list, and confirm which titles completed before starting another move.

Why is my C: drive still full after moving a Steam game?

Moving a game frees only the files included in that game’s library installation. A library entry alone frees nothing, and Steam may leave other data on C: that is unrelated to the moved game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The game was not actually moved: check Steam Storage and confirm its listed library, then compare free space in File Explorer.
  • Other Steam data remains: downloads, workshop files, shader caches, screenshots, and other games may still be on the original drive.
  • The game has data outside its library: saves, settings, or third-party tools can live in the Windows user profile rather than in the game folder.
  • Windows is using the space: open Settings > System > Storage and review the categories consuming the drive.
  • Cleanup has not been reviewed: Windows’ Cleanup recommendations can identify temporary files and other removable items. Review each category and selected file before deleting.

Storage Sense is not a Steam move tool. Microsoft documents that Storage Sense works on the system drive only, usually C:. It can help with Windows storage pressure there, but it cannot relocate a Steam library to another drive. Use it only after checking the categories and files it proposes to remove.

Do not expect a second-library entry to reclaim space until you move at least one existing installation. Conversely, moving one title does not guarantee that all Steam-related data leaves C:. Measure the drive before and after, then investigate the largest remaining categories separately.

What should I do if Steam says a moved game is uninstalled?

First, add the existing library path back to Steam instead of downloading immediately. Steam’s recovery guidance is to use the Storage manager’s + control to add the library that already contains the game.

  1. Verify in File Explorer that the destination drive is connected and that the library folder still contains the game’s files.
  2. Open Steam > Settings > Storage and click +.
  3. Choose the drive and select the existing Steam library folder, rather than creating an unrelated empty folder.
  4. Let Steam rescan the library, then check the game in your library.

If Steam still cannot recognize the installation, Steam’s documented fallback is to reinstall the affected game. Before doing that, confirm you selected the correct library and that the drive is stable and readable. A drive that intermittently disappears can make an intact library appear uninstalled.

If the drive letter changed, Steam may be looking at the old path. Re-adding the actual library through Storage is safer than manually editing folders, renaming directories, or deleting files. External drives are especially vulnerable to disconnects; reconnect them consistently before attempting recognition again.

Will moving a Steam game move my saves too?

Do not assume that every save is inside the game’s library folder. Save locations vary by game; some use a folder under Windows’ user profile, such as DocumentsMy Games, while others use different locations or Steam Cloud.

A normal per-game move is intended to relocate the installation files, not to promise that every save, configuration file, mod, screenshot, or third-party tool moves with it. Before a major change, identify the specific game’s save location and copy important saves to a separate backup. If the game supports Steam Cloud, allow synchronization to complete, but do not treat cloud availability as a substitute for checking critical local files.

Whole-client relocation requires the same caution. Steam specifically recommends backing up steamapps before that separate procedure, but that folder is not a universal container for every save. Preserve irreplaceable local files independently before moving hardware or changing a complete installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I move the whole Steam client instead?

Usually no. Moving selected games through Storage is narrower, simpler, and sufficient for freeing space. A whole-client migration changes the location of Steam itself and is a separate procedure in Steam Support.

If you have a reason to move the complete installation, back up the steamapps folder first and preserve important saves separately. Steam’s instructions distinguish the client move from game-library moves; following a whole-installation guide when you only need to move one game adds unnecessary risk. Do not assume that a client backup contains every game’s save data, because saves can live outside steamapps.

A full migration may make sense when replacing the system drive or rebuilding a computer, but it is not a prerequisite for using a second library. For ordinary capacity management, moving only the largest or least-used games limits the files and settings you need to verify.

Can I use an external drive for a Steam library?

Steam can encounter problems when an external drive disconnects, changes drive letters, or becomes unavailable. Steam warns that unexpected disconnections can cause recognition and performance issues, so an internal destination is the safer default for a library you expect to use regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external drive can still be useful for backups or for occasional transfers, provided it remains connected and reliable during the operation. It is different from using that drive as a permanently mounted live library. If Steam loses the drive, games may appear uninstalled until the drive is reconnected and the existing library is added again.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not unplug an external drive simply because the copy window appears idle. Wait for Steam to report completion, close any game using the library, and eject the drive through Windows when you are finished. A backup drive used before a whole-installation migration has a different purpose from an external drive that hosts games during everyday play.

Do I need to buy another SSD?

No. If your computer already has a compatible internal drive with enough free capacity, Steam’s built-in move process is all you need. Buying hardware is relevant only when the existing drives cannot provide a suitable destination.

Before purchasing an internal SSD, verify your computer’s slot type, physical size, interface, and supported capacity in the computer or motherboard documentation. An NVMe PCIe M.2 drive is a physical internal component, and installation may require shutting down the computer, opening the case, and securing the drive. Crucial’s NVMe PCIe M.2 installation guide likewise advises checking the computer manual and backing up data before hardware work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on compatible capacity and available slot—not on a promised Steam speed gain. The move procedure itself does not guarantee faster loading; its direct benefit is relocating files and recovering space on the original drive. An internal SSD is a purchase option for insufficient capacity, not a requirement for the free library-management workflow.

What are the safest recovery steps if the destination drive is missing?

  1. Check File Explorer > This PC for the drive and confirm it has not been disconnected.
  2. If it is absent, reconnect it or resolve the Windows drive issue before changing Steam settings.
  3. Return to Steam > Settings > Storage and use + to add the library path again.
  4. If a game remains unrecognized, verify the folder contains the expected files and use Steam’s reinstall fallback only after confirming the correct path.

A changing drive letter can also make an existing library path unavailable to Steam. Re-adding the actual library through Storage is safer than manually editing folders or deleting files. If Windows cannot consistently see the drive, solve that hardware or connection problem first; repeated Steam rescans will not repair an unavailable volume.

What should I verify after the move?

  • The game appears installed and launches from Steam.
  • The destination library is listed in Settings > Storage.
  • Available space increased on the original drive and decreased on the destination by the expected order of magnitude.
  • Important saves, mods, screenshots, and configuration files are still present where that particular game stores them.
  • The original game folder is no longer needed before you remove anything manually; let Steam manage the moved installation.
  • The destination remains connected and has a stable drive letter for future launches.

For ordinary disk cleanup, the reliable sequence is: inspect both drives, add a destination library, move existing games with Move, verify the result, then separately review Windows storage categories. This keeps Steam’s library records intact while avoiding accidental deletion of saves or unrelated Windows data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move several Steam games at once?

Yes. In Steam’s Storage page, select multiple games under the source library and choose Move, provided the destination has enough available space. If the transfer is interrupted, reconnect both drives and use the Storage page to confirm which games completed before starting another batch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does moving a game change its launch shortcut or desktop icon?

Steam normally maintains the game’s launch entry because the library registration is updated during the move. Shortcuts created by third-party tools or custom scripts may still point to an old executable path, so recreate or edit those shortcuts if they no longer open the game.

Can I move a Steam library back to the original drive later?

Yes. Add or retain both library locations in Steam Storage, select the game’s current library, and use Move to choose the other one. The same checks apply: confirm free capacity and wait for Steam to finish before disconnecting a drive.

Is Windows Storage Sense able to move Steam games?

No. Storage Sense manages eligible Windows files on the system drive; it does not select Steam libraries or transfer game installations. Use Steam’s Storage settings for game moves, and use Windows cleanup tools separately for non-Steam storage.

Will adding a second library free space immediately?

No. Adding a library only makes a destination available for future installs. Existing games remain on their current drive until you select them in Storage and use Move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move a game without downloading it again?

Yes. Steam’s Storage Move command transfers the existing library installation to another Steam library. You still need enough free space and a connected, readable source and destination drive.

What if the destination drive is not listed in Steam?

Confirm that Windows shows the drive in File Explorer, then return to Steam Settings > Storage and click + to add a library on that drive. If Windows cannot see it, fix that connection or drive issue first.

Will moving the game move mods and screenshots?

Do not assume it will move every related file. The move covers the game installation managed by the library; saves, screenshots, workshop data, configuration files, and third-party tools can be stored elsewhere. Check and back up important files for the particular game.

Is an external drive a good permanent Steam library?

It can work, but Steam warns that unexpected disconnections may cause recognition or performance problems. An internal drive is the safer default for a library used regularly; an external drive is often better suited to backups or occasional transfers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Add the second drive in Steam > Settings > Storage, then use Move for games that already occupy the original drive. Verify free space in Windows, protect saves separately, and keep the destination connected. You do not need to move the Steam client, and Windows Storage Sense cannot perform Steam library moves.
