Buy directly from the Steam store
- Sign in to the Steam account you want to use and open the game’s Steam Store page.
- Add the game to your cart and choose the purchase option to continue.

If Steam shows UPI as an option, you can use it without buying a gift card. Steam says Wallet funds can be used for any Steam game or a supported in-game transaction. The listed amounts are the options shown on the India page at the retrieval date above; they should not be treated as a promise that every amount or funding method will remain available indefinitely.
Wallet funding changes the sequence, not the basic payment question: you first use an available payment method to add money to Steam, then spend the balance on a game or supported in-game transaction. It can be useful if you want a balance ready for purchases, but it does not bypass checkout or guarantee acceptance of a card, UPI, or other method. Check the Add Funds checkout itself for the payment methods available to your account.
When adding Wallet funds makes sense
- You want to avoid a separate code: Add funds through Steam’s own Add Funds flow rather than buying a wallet code from another seller.
- You prefer to use a balance: Fund the Wallet first, then use that balance for an eligible Steam purchase.

Can I use a debit card or credit card?
A debit or credit card may work if the card issuer permits the transaction and Steam offers the method in your checkout. Card acceptance is not guaranteed by the fact that a card works elsewhere, or by its network or issuing bank. Is PayPal a dependable option for Steam in India?
No. Do not rely on PayPal being available for an Indian Steam purchase. Steam’s current Purchasing Issues notice says that, following an acquiring-bank change reported in early July 2025, PayPal transactions in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD were affected. Steam says it hopes to offer PayPal again for affected currencies but gives no certain timeline, and recommends using another current payment method at checkout in the meantime.
That notice is about affected currencies, not a guarantee that PayPal is available wherever a listed currency applies. Check the methods Steam displays for your transaction; if PayPal is absent, choose another currently offered option rather than trying to force it through a different currency or account setting.

For an Indian buyer, the practical takeaway is to regard PayPal as an uncertain possibility, not a plan to build a purchase around. Steam’s notice names the currencies that were not affected by the reported issue, but it does not promise that PayPal will appear for every account or transaction in those currencies. The purchase screen remains the deciding point. If PayPal is not listed, Steam recommends using another current payment method during checkout.

If Steam offers Add Funds with a method that works for you, you can fund the Wallet and then pay for the game from that balance.
Changing from direct purchase to Wallet funding only helps if the Add Funds checkout offers a workable payment method. It is a different route within Steam, not an independent payment system. If every available method fails, contact Steam Support or the relevant issuer rather than assuming that adding a Wallet balance will solve the problem.
Wallet codes sold by third parties are a separate fallback, not a no-gift-card method. Codashop presents Steam Wallet Codes for India and says they can be purchased online without a credit card. JioGames documents a UPI-funded prepaid gaming-card route. Both routes involve a code or prepaid card, so they do not meet the direct-purchase approach in the title.
If considering a third-party code, verify the seller, denomination, regional compatibility, and redemption terms before paying. Do not assume a seller is endorsed by Valve unless an official relationship is documented. If your main question is whether UPI works, the careful answer is: it may be available, but only rely on it when Steam displays it for your current checkout. The same principle applies to debit cards, credit cards, and PayPal. Can I change my Steam country just to make another payment method appear?
Steam’s purchasing guidance ties payment methods to the account’s current store country and says the method should match that country. A country setting should reflect the correct store region for the purchase, not serve as a workaround to expose a payment option.
