Steam Frame is Valve’s standalone VR headset, designed primarily to stream a Steam library from a PC with low latency, while also running compatible VR and non-VR software locally. The smoothest setup is to finish the Guided Tour, install every offered update, pair the dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter, and define a clear playspace before launching an immersive title. These tips cover the choices that matter most: when to stream versus install locally, how to place the adapter, how to extend battery life, which microSD cards work, and what to check when tracking or lenses cause trouble.
How do I set up Steam Frame?
On first start, follow the Guided Tour, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in, pair the controllers and install all available system updates. The tour can be replayed later from Help in the Quick Access Menu, which is useful if you skip a control explanation.
- Power on the headset and complete the Guided Tour.
- Join your Wi-Fi network and sign in to your Steam account.
- Allow the headset to download and install every offered update before playing.
- Confirm that the included controllers pair automatically. If one is missing, open Settings > Controller > Add Controller.
- For a gamepad, use the same Controller menu. Pair other Bluetooth accessories through Settings > Bluetooth.
- Open the Playspace menu, set the floor height, draw or confirm the safe area, and recenter. The Chaperone boundary grid appears as you approach its edge.
If a controller is unavailable, press the headset’s Aux button to bring up a head-directed cursor for basic navigation while you troubleshoot.
How do I stream PC games to Steam Frame?
Streaming uses the host computer’s Steam Library and the included dedicated wireless adapter. In the headset Library, select “Stream from <host PC name>.” The adapter should have a clear line of sight to the headset and remain close to the playspace.

Place the wireless adapter for low-latency play
- Pair the included 6GHz adapter during setup.
- Keep it unobstructed and in clear line of sight.
- Stay within approximately 20 feet of the adapter, the distance cited in Valve’s current 2026 support guidance.
- Keep the host PC on a reliable local connection and avoid placing the adapter behind furniture, displays or other radio-blocking obstacles.
Valve documents full SteamVR and wireless-adapter streaming support on Windows. Linux support is qualified by the stated SteamOS and kernel requirements; broader support is planned after launch, so check the current requirements before depending on a Linux host.
Should I stream a game or install it on the headset?
Choose streaming when you want access to the PC’s larger library and the PC’s processing power. Choose standalone mode when you need the headset to work without a nearby host computer or network connection.
| Option | What it requires | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Host PC, local network and the dedicated wireless adapter | SteamVR titles and streamed Windows/Linux PC games |
| Standalone | The compatible title installed on Steam Frame | Travel, offline play and experiences supported natively on the headset |
Check the compatibility label in the Library or on the store page before downloading. Valve also maintains a Steam Frame Verified curation page. Steamworks describes support for SteamVR and OpenXR, streamed Windows/Linux PC titles, and native ARM64 or Android-based applications; “compatible” still depends on the individual title.

Which performance mode should I use?
Open the headset’s power or performance controls and select the mode that matches the session. Performance mode prioritizes headset performance, while Playtime mode favors longer battery life. Battery duration varies with these settings and with whether you are streaming or running software locally, so there is no single runtime that applies to every game.
How long does Steam Frame take to charge?
Valve recommends a compatible 45W power supply. Its current support estimate is about 1.5 hours for a full recharge with that supply, compared with about 3.5 hours through a PC or adapter. Those are charging estimates, not a guaranteed battery runtime; heat, system mode and workload affect both charging behavior and playtime.
What microSD card works with Steam Frame?
Steam Frame ships with either a 256GB or 1TB internal SSD. When that space is insufficient, add a formatted UHS-I microSD card rated Class 3 or better for library storage.

- Select the card and choose the format option.
- Wait for formatting to finish before installing or moving titles.
UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but Steam Frame does not support their higher transfer speeds. Before buying, verify the UHS-I and Class 3 markings, capacity, warranty and local availability; a faster bus rating alone does not add supported performance.

Steam Frame combines built-in cameras and sensors with controller IMU data. Tracking problems are often caused by an obstructed sensor, difficult lighting or a controller battery, so work through these checks in order.
- Remove anything covering the headset cameras or other sensors; do not use modifications that obscure them.
- Turn off bright LEDs or infrared sources near the playspace.
- Cover or move highly reflective surfaces that can confuse the cameras.
- Restart the headset and controllers, then restart SteamVR if you are streaming.
- Check and replace depleted controller batteries.
- Reopen the Playspace menu, redo the boundary if necessary, adjust floor height and recenter.
After each change, test in a well-lit but non-glare environment. If only one controller drifts, concentrate on its battery and pairing before rebuilding the entire playspace.

How do I clean Steam Frame lenses safely?
Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth with light pressure. If dry cleaning does not remove a mark, put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth—not directly on the lens—and wipe gently. Valve does not recommend water or other cleaning products and advises against frequent alcohol use.
Store the headset in a cool, dry place with the lenses turned away from windows and other bright light sources. Direct sunlight can damage optical components even when the headset is not powered on.
What network and control details prevent common problems?
Valve states that “The Steam Frame uses built-in Wi-Fi 7 for basic connectivity.” The dedicated adapter remains important for the low-latency PC-streaming path, so built-in Wi-Fi does not remove the need to position the adapter correctly. Keep the adapter near the playspace, maintain line of sight and avoid saturating the local network during a session.

If navigation is difficult while a controller is disconnected, the Aux-button cursor can get you back to the Controller settings. Once pairing is restored, confirm both controllers appear before starting a room-scale title.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam Frame run games without a PC?
Yes, when the title has a compatible native build and is installed on the headset. Standalone play does not require a nearby host PC or network connection, but compatibility varies by title; check its Library or store-page designation first.
How far can I be from the Steam Frame wireless adapter?
Valve’s current support guidance says to remain within approximately 20 feet of the adapter. Clear line of sight is also recommended, so a shorter unobstructed path can be more dependable than a longer path through furniture or walls.

Linux streaming is qualified rather than universal. Valve ties support to specified SteamOS and kernel requirements and says expanded support is planned after launch; verify the current requirements for your host before relying on it.
Can I use a UHS-II microSD card in Steam Frame?
It may work, but Steam Frame does not support the card’s higher UHS-II transfer speeds. A correctly formatted UHS-I Class 3-or-better card matches Valve’s stated supported specification.
What should I do if the Guided Tour was skipped?
Replay it from Help in the Quick Access Menu. You can then revisit controller pairing, playspace setup and other first-start controls without resetting the headset.
