In PC Gamer’s 2026 test of Half-Life: Alyx, the reviewer measured about 17–19 W during local play and as little as 10 W while streaming through the included adapter. Those are power readings from one game and review setup, not promised battery runtimes. Which mode suits you depends on whether you value PC-rendered performance or independence from a host PC and network stream.
What changes between streaming and local gameplay?
Steam Frame supports both modes, but the game runs in a different place. Valve describes the headset as designed primarily for low-latency PC streaming, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences (Valve’s Steamworks documentation).
| Trade-off | Stream from a PC | Play locally |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game is rendered | The host PC runs the game and streams its visuals and audio to the headset (Valve). | The headset runs a supported game on its own hardware (Valve). |
| Performance ceiling | Depends on the host PC and stream quality; a capable PC can provide its rendering performance. | Depends on the headset’s hardware and whether the particular game is compatible and runs well standalone. |
| PC or network dependence | Needs a usable PC-to-headset stream. Valve includes a dedicated wireless adapter (Valve hardware specifications). | Does not need a gameplay stream from a PC. |
| Battery evidence | In PC Gamer’s Half-Life: Alyx test, draw was as low as 10 W while streaming through the included adapter (PC Gamer, 2026). | In the same review test, local play drew about 17–19 W (PC Gamer, 2026). |
| Best fit | Players with a capable PC who want PC-rendered performance and may benefit from lower headset power draw. | Players who want to play without relying on a host PC or gameplay stream, and are choosing titles suited to standalone play. |
The battery readings suggest streaming can use less headset power, but they do not establish how many hours either mode lasts. For a detailed battery comparison, see the evidence and its limits below.
How streaming affects performance and connection demands
When streaming, the PC handles the game’s rendering; the headset receives the stream and tracks the player’s input. That can make demanding PC games available without asking the headset’s own processor to render them. The result still depends on both the PC and the quality of the wireless connection: a dedicated adapter is part of Valve’s design, not a guarantee that every home setup or game will stream without trouble.

PC Gamer reports that the included adapter uses a dedicated 6 GHz link alongside the headset’s local Wi-Fi connection, with the system choosing between connections to reduce packet loss. The report also describes eye-tracked foveated streaming: more streaming detail is allocated around where the player is looking, with less in peripheral vision (PC Gamer). Tom’s Hardware quotes Valve engineer Jeff Leinbaugh explaining that eye tracking lets the system direct resources toward the part of the image the player is viewing (Tom’s Hardware). This is a way to manage bandwidth, not evidence that compression or latency is imperceptible.
Battery life: what the measurements do—and do not—show
The most direct comparison in the available coverage is PC Gamer’s reviewer measurement while playing Half-Life: Alyx: about 17–19 W locally versus as little as 10 W when streamed through the included adapter. These are system power readings from one reviewer’s test setup, not a controlled multi-game average or a Valve runtime specification (PC Gamer, 2026).

Valve’s SteamOS 0.4.3 beta announcement says battery lifetime and power efficiency improved by up to 12% in both streaming and local gameplay, while warning that results vary by frame rate and content. This is a conditional claim about a beta software update, not a tested gain for every game, setting, or user (Valve SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes).
Valve lists a 21.6 Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but battery capacity alone cannot establish session length. Runtime will vary with the game, settings, frame rate, and software; the sources cited here do not provide a dependable number of hours for either mode. PC Gamer notes that a USB-C power bank can charge the headset, but does not establish how much extra playtime a particular bank provides. Valve lists rear USB-C 2.0 charging support and a maximum charging input of 45 W (Valve hardware specifications).

Local gameplay has hardware and compatibility limits
Steam Frame uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, ARM64 architecture, and 16 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. Valve lists 256 GB and 1 TB storage options, plus a microSD slot (Valve hardware specifications). Those specifications do not mean every game in a Steam library can run locally: a game that streams successfully from a powerful PC may not be available or perform well as a standalone title.
Valve’s developer documentation describes support for Windows and Linux PC execution models as well as native ARM64 and Android APK applications (Valve’s Steamworks documentation). For players, the practical check is a game’s standalone compatibility status. Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified program evaluates the out-of-box standalone experience, including default graphics performance, legibility of text and interface elements, and controller configuration (Valve Standalone Verified documentation). Library ownership alone does not establish that a game will run locally.

Which mode should you choose?
Choose streaming when
- You have a capable PC and want it to render demanding games.
- You have a reliable setup for streaming to the headset and are comfortable depending on it.
- You want to avoid making the headset do all the game rendering; the single published comparison above found lower headset power draw while streaming, though it is not a runtime guarantee.
Choose local play when
- You want to play without a PC-to-headset gameplay stream.
- The game you want is available and suitable for standalone performance.
- You accept that the headset’s own hardware, rather than your PC’s, sets the rendering limit.
For a title that works in both modes, use the PC stream when PC rendering is the priority and local play when independence is more important. Verify the game’s standalone status before treating local play as an alternative.
Controller battery life is a separate figure
Valve estimates approximately 40 hours of playtime from one AA battery per controller (Valve hardware specifications). That figure applies to the controllers, not the headset.
