Steam’s Free Demos hub is the quickest way to browse playable trials, while an individual game page may show a demo control or link to a separate demo listing. You can install a demo immediately or use Add to Library and download it later—even if you already own the full game. In the library, uninstalling and removing a demo from your account are different actions, and a developer can deactivate a demo so an entry remains visible but cannot be downloaded or launched. This guide explains the current discovery, installation, library-management, troubleshooting and Steam Deck checks, with availability understood as of October 2026.
Where are free demos on Steam?
Start with Steam’s Free Demos hub. It is designed for broad browsing and provides genre and other filters. The live match total changes continually, so it is not a stable catalog count or a dated statistic.
Use the Free Demos hub
- Open the Free Demos hub in a browser or the Steam store client.
- Apply the available genre and store filters to narrow the list.
- Open a result and read its own store information before acquiring it.
Demos can also surface in Steam store lists and genre or tag pages. A title may therefore appear outside the hub even when you started your search elsewhere.

Find a demo from a named game
Search for the full game and inspect its main store page. If the developer attached a demo there, the page presents a demo install or download control. Some demos have a separate store page instead; follow that listing when it appears. The separate page is the authoritative place for demo-specific details such as languages, supported modes and user reviews, rather than assuming the full game’s listing applies unchanged. How do I choose the right demo before installing?
Check the demo’s own store description for scope, language support and features. A demo is a separate application, so the full release’s multiplayer modes, accessibility options, controller behavior or save-transfer promises may not be included.
Read the demo-specific feature list
- Languages: confirm that the demo lists the spoken and interface languages you need; these can differ from the full game.
- Modes and content: look for campaign, co-op, versus, tutorial or time-limit information on the demo page itself.
- Save transfer: shared progress with the purchased game works only when the developer implements it. Steam does not automatically merge every demo save with the full game.
- Requirements: use the demo listing’s operating-system, controller and hardware information, not assumptions based on the complete title.
A demo may be a festival build or a temporary promotional application. Adding one to your library is not a guarantee of permanent access; the developer controls whether it remains downloadable and launchable.
Can I add a demo without installing it?
Yes. Steam supports Add to Library so you can claim the demo now and defer the download. Valve described this behavior in its Steam client update: Steam News, July 25, 2024.

Install immediately from the store page
- Open the demo’s store page, either from the Free Demos hub or the game’s main listing.
- Select the page’s demo install or download control.
- When Steam presents the installation flow, choose the library location and confirm.
- Wait for the download to finish; the demo then appears in your Steam library as its own entry.
The exact wording and placement of controls can vary between the desktop client, web store and a separate demo page. Follow the control shown on the listing rather than relying on a particular dialog layout.
Add it now and download later
- On the demo listing, choose Add to Library when that option is offered.
- Close the store page without starting a download.
- Open Library, locate the demo entry and select Steam’s install command when you are ready.
- Choose a library location and confirm the later installation.
You can add or install a demo even after buying the complete game. Ownership of the full release does not by itself prevent the demo from appearing as a separate library item.

What is the difference between installing now and Add to Library?

Neither choice overrides developer-controlled availability. A festival demo that is added to your account can become unusable if its application is deactivated.
How do I install a demo I already added to my library?
Use the normal Steam library installation path for that demo entry. The store page is useful for confirming what the application is, but the library is where a deferred download is started.

- Search or browse for the demo’s title. Separate demo applications may appear next to the full game, so check the icon and title carefully.
- Open the demo’s library page and choose Install (or the equivalent current install control).
- Select the target Steam library and confirm the download.
- After installation, launch from the demo’s own Play button.
If the install control is missing, return to the store listing and verify that the demo is still offered. A listing can remain in your library even after its developer has disabled downloading.
How do I remove a demo from my Steam library?
Steam documents two distinct outcomes: uninstalling the local files and explicitly removing the demo from your account. Valve states that uninstalling a demo automatically removes it from the library, while the client also exposes a separate Manage > Remove from account command (Valve’s Steam News update).
Uninstall the installed files
- Open Library and select the demo.
- Open the demo’s management or properties controls and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal of local files.
According to Valve’s documentation, uninstalling a demo automatically removes its library entry. This is different from merely stopping a download or deleting a shortcut outside Steam.

Use Remove from account
- In Library, right-click the demo entry.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Remove from account and confirm the prompt.
This explicit account action is not the same command as uninstalling. Use it when you want Steam to forget the demo association rather than only clearing installed files.

Why won’t my demo launch after a festival or Next Fest?
One documented explanation is developer deactivation. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “Deactivating a demo will prevent players from downloading or launching your demo” (Steamworks demos documentation). A library entry can remain visible even though the application no longer starts; however, a launch failure alone does not prove deactivation.
Check whether the demo is still available
- Open the demo’s store page and look for a current install or download control.
- Compare the demo listing with the full game page; the developer may have ended a festival build while leaving the commercial game live.
- Look for a developer announcement explaining a time-limited event, replacement build or withdrawal.
If Steam offers no download and the entry cannot launch, deactivation is plausible. If the store still offers the demo, investigate ordinary client, operating-system, file or controller problems instead of treating every failure as a withdrawn application.
When an existing entry is misleading
A demo can stay listed in your library after its application status changes. The presence of an icon is therefore not proof that the files remain downloadable or that the service will authorize a launch. Wishlist the full game or follow its developer if you want future release news, but neither action restores a withdrawn demo.
Can I try the demo if I own the full game?
Yes. Steam allows a demo to be added or installed even when the complete game is already in your account. The demo remains a separate application, and any progression hand-off depends on the developer’s implementation rather than your ownership status.

What carries into the full game?
Do not assume that a demo save, unlock, achievement or settings profile transfers. Check the demo-specific page for an explicit statement and follow the developer’s instructions. If no transfer information is provided, treat the demo and full game as separate experiences.
How do I check Steam Deck compatibility for a demo?
PC availability is not proof that a demo works well on Steam Deck. Check the individual demo or game listing’s compatibility information and consult Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guide, which distinguishes Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown statuses.
Read the title-specific rating
- Open the demo’s store page on the Deck or in a browser.
- Find the compatibility details for that particular application, not merely the full game’s rating.
- Check notes about text size, launchers, controls, keyboard input or performance where Valve provides them.
- If the status is Unknown, understand that Valve has not yet checked it; this is not a positive compatibility verdict.
Deck owners can use the built-in microSD slot for additional storage; Valve lists UHS-I compatibility in its technical specifications (Steam Deck technical specifications). That hardware capability does not make any particular card necessary, nor does it change a demo’s compatibility rating.

Use Steam’s wishlist for the full game when you are deciding whether to buy it, and follow the developer when you want broader announcements. Review your Steam email preferences so availability and release notifications are delivered as you expect.
- Wishlist: tracks interest in the full game and can provide Steam’s normal wishlist notifications.
- Follow the developer: helps surface announcements about new builds, events or releases.
- Library entry: shows what you previously added, but does not guarantee that a withdrawn demo can still be downloaded.
A wishlist or follow does not preserve access to a deactivated demo. It is a way to hear about future availability, not a backup copy of the application.

What should I do when a demo is missing from search?
Search can miss a demo when it has a separate application page, a different title, or no longer has active availability. Work through the store and library checks below.
- Search the exact full-game title, then open the main store page and inspect its demo control.
- Open the Free Demos hub and clear restrictive genre or tag filters.
- Check store lists and genre pages where demos may be surfaced independently.
- If you previously added it, search your library rather than the store.
- If the entry exists but cannot install or launch, look for evidence of developer deactivation.
Do not infer that a demo never existed simply because it no longer appears in a current search result. Event builds are especially likely to have changed status, while a library record can remain visible.

Do Steam demos cost anything to add?
A listing labeled as a free demo does not require purchasing the full game to add or install it. Steam may still show optional purchases or a separate paid full release on the same store family of pages, so confirm that you selected the demo application.
Can a Steam demo contain achievements or trading cards?
