To uninstall a Steam demo, open Library, right-click the demo, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm. Steam removes the installed files; under Valve’s July 2024 demo rules, uninstalling also removes that demo from your library. To clear an old tile that has no installation, use Manage > Remove from account. For the fastest space audit, open Steam > Settings > Storage, where installed demos appear alongside games and can be removed in batches.
If the drive still looks full afterward, check shader caches, interrupted downloads, Workshop files, Proton prefixes on Steam Deck/Linux, and the Recycle Bin or Trash. Do not delete the whole Steam folder or unknown account-removal scripts.
What is the difference between uninstalling a demo and removing it from your Steam account?
Uninstall removes local files and frees disk space. Remove from account removes the demo entitlement and library tile; it does not serve as a disk-cleanup command if files are still installed.

Demos can now be added to a library without being installed, installed even when you already own the full game, and explicitly removed with Right-click > Manage > Remove from account. Valve also states that uninstalling a demo automatically removes it from the library. Some older demos may still appear because of the visibility change; remove those individually with the same account command.

This differs from a purchased game. Uninstalling a full game removes its local files but normally leaves the game in your library with an Install button. A demo is often a separate Steam app with its own AppID and store listing, so installing the full game does not necessarily reuse or remove the demo’s files.
How do I see which demos are using storage?
Use Steam’s Storage Manager before deleting folders. It shows every Steam library and installed title, including demos, with sizes and drive locations.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select a drive or library folder. Sort the list by size if you are looking for the largest space users.
- Select one or more demos and choose Uninstall or Remove.
Storage Manager is the practical batch-removal route. The ordinary Library list generally offers one-title-at-a-time uninstalling, while Storage Manager provides checkboxes for multiple installed items. It also lets you add another library folder and move titles instead of deleting them.
In Library, check the filter as well. An Installed view hides uninstalled entries; switch to All when you are cleaning up old library tiles rather than looking for disk usage.
How do I uninstall a Steam demo on Windows or macOS?
The client steps are the same on Windows and Mac, and they remove the files tracked by Steam.
- Open Library and search for the demo. Look for its Demo label or icon if the title has a similarly named full game.
- Right-click the demo’s library entry.
- Select Manage > Uninstall. Older guides may call this Delete Local Content; that is legacy wording for the same basic action.
- Confirm the prompt and let Steam finish before quitting the client.
You can alternatively select the demo in Settings > Storage and uninstall it there. Windows’ Settings > Apps > Installed apps may list some Steam titles, but using Steam is preferable because it updates the client’s library records. Neither route guarantees that every untracked file, shader cache, mod, or save is removed.
If Uninstall is unavailable, close the running demo and any related game, then retry. A restart of Steam can release a file lock. Do not uninstall the Steam client merely to remove a few demos: Valve’s client-uninstall process removes Steam and installed game content unless the steamapps folder is moved out first.

How do I remove a demo that is still showing in my library?
First check whether it is actually installed. If the title does not appear in Storage Manager, it is a library/account entry rather than a disk-space problem.
- In Library, right-click the demo.
- Choose Manage > Remove from account.
- Confirm the removal.
Valve specifically recommends this for demos played long ago that reappear after its visibility changes. Some interfaces or older help articles may use wording such as “Remove From Library,” but Valve’s current documented label is Remove from account. Removing the account entry does not delete a separately stranded folder, so inspect the relevant library path if Storage Manager no longer lists the app.
Why is Steam storage still full after I uninstall a demo?
Steam removes the files it tracks, but uninstallers commonly leave untracked data. Check the following only after confirming that the title is gone from Storage Manager.
| Location | What may remain | Safer cleanup approach |
|---|---|---|
steamapps/common/<folder> |
Empty or near-empty game folder, mods, or files an installer did not register | Open the folder, verify it belongs to the uninstalled AppID/title, and delete only that folder. |
steamapps/shadercache/<AppID> |
GPU shader cache, sometimes several gigabytes for demanding or ray-traced games | Delete the numbered cache only when its AppID belongs to an uninstalled title. It is regenerated if you play again; the first launch may stutter while it rebuilds. |
steamapps/downloading |
Partial downloads or interrupted updates | Cancel active downloads first, use Steam’s download-cache command, then remove clearly abandoned contents. |
steamapps/workshop/content |
Workshop mods for an uninstalled game | Unsubscribe from the game’s Workshop items, then remove leftover content for that AppID. |
steamapps/common/_CommonRedist or installer folders |
Bundled Visual C++, DirectX, or other redistributable installers | Do not remove shared Windows runtimes from Apps. Installer packages can be redundant, but identify them before deleting. |
steamapps/compatdata/<AppID> (Linux/Deck) |
Proton prefix containing Windows-style configuration and possibly saves | Inspect the prefix for saves before deleting; remove only an orphan belonging to an uninstalled title. |
Typical paths are C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon on a default Windows installation and <drive>:SteamLibrarysteamapps for a custom library. On macOS, Steam game data is commonly under ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/. Library locations can differ, so use Storage Manager to identify the actual drive and folder.

Find an AppID from the demo’s store URL, the title’s Properties, or a trusted AppID reference. Do not delete appmanifest_*.acf files: Steam uses them to track installed applications, and removing them can make an installation appear missing.
Is it safe to delete Steam shadercache?
Shader caches do not contain save files, and orphaned caches for uninstalled titles are generally safe to remove. Steam or the game will rebuild a needed cache on the next launch, which can temporarily increase loading time or cause stutter during compilation.
Delete only numbered folders that you can associate with an uninstalled demo or game. Do not delete the parent steamapps directory. You can also review Steam > Settings > Shader Pre-Caching rather than manually clearing everything. Keeping caches for games you still play avoids unnecessary recompilation.

How do I clear Steam’s download cache without uninstalling games?
Use Steam’s built-in cache command when downloads are stuck or partial data is consuming space:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm. Steam restarts and may ask you to sign in again.
This does not uninstall games or demos. It clears client download data; after it completes, review steamapps/downloading for abandoned folders only after confirming that no update or installation is active.
Will uninstalling a demo delete my saves?
Uninstalling normally does not delete Steam Cloud data. Open the title’s Properties > General page to see whether Steam Cloud is enabled, and allow synchronization to finish before removing files.
Local-only saves can remain in Documents, DocumentsMy Games, AppData, or a game-specific folder. On Steam Deck and Linux, Windows games often store saves inside the Proton prefix at compatdata/<AppID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/, commonly under Documents, Saved Games, or AppData. Back up anything important before deleting a compatdata folder. Shader caches do not hold saves, but Proton prefixes can.
Do not delete the broad userdata directory as routine cleanup. It contains Steam user data and may include local configuration or saves unrelated to the demo you removed.
How do I move a demo or game instead of uninstalling it?
Move a title when you want to keep it playable but need space on the current drive. Steam transfers the installation and updates its records, so a completed move should not require a re-download.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Click the + button if the destination drive does not yet have a Steam library folder, and create or select one.
- Select the source drive and check the title.
- Choose Move, select the destination library, and confirm.
An external SSD can host a PC Steam library. USB connection speed affects load times; an internal SSD is preferable for frequently played titles, while a slower drive is more suitable for occasional games. Moving is safer than dragging folders in File Explorer because Steam updates its manifests and library records.

How do I clean demo leftovers on Steam Deck or SteamOS?
Start in Gaming Mode: press the Steam button, open Settings > Storage, select the game or demo, and uninstall or move it. For a second library, use a microSD card that meets the commonly cited UHS-I, class 3-or-better requirement, then let SteamOS format it. A card formatted for a camera or Windows may need Format SD Card in SteamOS first.
Even when the game is on the card, generated data can remain on the internal drive. In Desktop Mode, inspect orphaned numbered folders in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/shadercache and ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata; some installations use ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/ instead. Match the number to an uninstalled AppID before deleting it.
Do not remove shared Proton runtimes. Before deleting compatdata, inspect pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser for local saves. If Steam thinks files are uninstalled but a large folder remains, keep the folder, add its parent as a library in Settings > Storage, and start an install so Steam can discover existing files rather than downloading another copy.
What should I avoid when trying to free Steam storage?
- Do not delete the entire Steam directory. It can remove the client, installed content, manifests, and shared components.
- Do not remove shared Visual C++, DirectX, controller drivers, or Proton runtimes just because a demo installed an installer package.
- Do not run browser-console or Pastebin mass-removal scripts. A previously circulated script guide was removed for violating Steam Community rules; user reports described incomplete removals and accidental DLC deletion. The supported approach is one title at a time, or Storage Manager for installed titles.
- Do not defragment an SSD as a download or capacity fix.
- Do not empty folders while Steam is downloading. Cancel or finish the operation first, then restart Steam if files remain locked.
If you are trying to remove account entries through Steam’s license page, use the supported client controls instead of scripts. The license page is Steam’s account licenses page, but it is not a safe substitute for normal per-demo management.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the best long-term fix for repeated Steam Next Fest storage pressure?
For occasional trials, uninstall demos promptly and periodically review Storage Manager. Valve says thousands of playable demos launch on Steam every year and millions of players try them, so repeated accumulation is normal rather than a sign that Steam is malfunctioning.
If you routinely install large releases and demos, add a second library instead of repeatedly deleting titles you may replay. Current large-game installations can span roughly 80–150 GB, and some major releases are larger still; required installation space can exceed the download size shown by Steam. On PC, a 1 TB external or portable SSD is a practical additional library, while an internal NVMe or SATA SSD is better when the system drive itself is too small. On Steam Deck, choose a suitably rated microSD card and keep the fastest or most frequently played games on internal storage.

Why does Steam still show a demo after I removed it?
A library filter, cached client view, or an old demo entitlement can make a removed title appear temporarily. Switch to All, restart Steam, and then use Manage > Remove from account if the entry has no installed files.
If Storage Manager lists the title, uninstall it there first. If the tile returns after a visibility refresh, repeat the account-removal command rather than deleting unrelated manifests.
Can I reinstall a demo after removing it from my account?
Yes. Removing a demo from the account removes the entitlement or library entry, not the developer’s store listing. Find the demo’s store page again and add it to the library or install it, subject to the demo’s current availability.

How much space will deleting a Steam demo free?
There is no reliable Valve-wide average demo size. The amount depends on the developer’s files, optional language or texture content, and leftover caches. Check the exact installed size in Settings > Storage, then check the library folder, shadercache, Workshop content, and Recycle Bin if the recovered amount is lower than expected.
Should I use a third-party Steam-cleaning utility?
Manual cleanup is safer when you can identify the AppID and folder. Third-party cleaners may find redundant redistributable installers or caches, but they can misidentify shared files, saves, or active downloads; review every proposed deletion and keep backups. Steam’s own uninstall, Storage Manager, Move, and Clear Download Cache controls should be the starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling a Steam demo remove it from my account permanently?
Since Valve’s July 2024 rules, uninstalling a demo also removes it from the library, but the store listing may remain available for another installation. If you only want to hide an entry without touching files, use the account-removal command rather than deleting folders.
Recommended Free Tools
Where are Steam demo files stored on a second drive?
Open Steam’s Storage Manager to see the exact library path. Common Windows locations end in SteamLibrarysteamappscommon; Linux and Steam Deck libraries commonly use ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/ or ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/.
Can a Steam demo’s Proton prefix contain my save files?
Yes. On Linux or Steam Deck, a Windows demo may store local saves inside its numbered compatdata Proton prefix. Back up the prefix’s Documents, Saved Games, or AppData folders before deleting it; shadercache folders themselves do not contain saves.
Why did Steam reclaim less space than the demo’s listed size?
The displayed download or install figure may exclude Workshop files, shader caches, partial downloads, and files in the Recycle Bin or Trash. Check Storage Manager and the title’s library folder, then empty the operating system’s deleted-items container.
