For a large Steam Deck library, buy a genuine 1TB UHS-I microSDXC card with A2, U3 and V30 markings. The SanDisk Extreme 1TB is the safest default; Samsung PRO Plus is an excellent alternative, and Lexar Play is the value route to 1TB or 2TB. Choose 2TB only when you do not want to uninstall games—two 1TB cards can cost less.
Do not pay extra for 190–245 MB/s box speeds, UHS-II, V60/V90 or microSD Express. Every LCD and OLED Steam Deck has a UHS-I slot whose practical bus limit is about 104 MB/s. Capacity, random performance, seller authenticity and warranty matter more than sequential-read advertising.

Which microSD card is best for a large Steam Deck library?
The best fit is a branded 1TB A2/U3/V30 UHS-I card bought from a reputable seller. SanDisk Extreme, Samsung PRO Plus and Lexar Play all meet the useful labels; select among them by capacity, warranty and current price rather than the highest number printed for sequential read.
Use the SanDisk Extreme 1TB as the default recommendation for this specific use case. Its common SDSQXAV-1T00-GN6MA version carries A2, U3 and V30 ratings, lists up to 190 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write, and has a lifetime limited warranty. The Deck cannot use the full sequential figure, but the card gives you the capacity and random-performance class needed for a large installed library.

What does the Steam Deck card slot support?
Valve lists a high-speed microSD slot on every LCD and OLED model. The official LCD specifications and OLED specifications identify the expansion interface as “microSD: UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC.” OLED does not have a faster card reader; its display, battery, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth changes do not alter microSD performance.
Valve’s Steam Support FAQ says any UHS-I class 3 or better card is supported. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but their extra transfer speed is not supported. The slot also supports booting from microSD.
Why the 104 MB/s ceiling matters
The SD Association’s UHS-I bus modes top out at 104 MB/s in SDR104 (with 50 MB/s SDR50 and DDR50 modes below it). A card advertised at 160, 190, 205 or 245 MB/s reaches those figures only in a compatible external reader. In the Deck, all of those cards negotiate the same UHS-I host limit.

The useful distinction is random access and sustained writing, not the marketing maximum.
Which labels should a Steam Deck microSD card have?
Look for A2 + U3 + V30 on a UHS-I microSDXC card. Those marks describe different aspects of game storage:
- A2: the Application Performance Class associated with at least 4,000 random-read IOPS and 2,000 random-write IOPS. Random access matters when a game opens many small files.
- U3: a UHS Speed Class minimum sustained write rate of 30 MB/s.
- V30: a Video Speed Class minimum sustained write rate of 30 MB/s. For Steam Deck installs, it overlaps U3 but is a useful corroborating label.
A1 cards specify 1,500 random-read and 500 random-write IOPS. They can run games, but A2 is the stronger target when the price difference is small. Valve’s “class 3 or better” wording aligns with choosing U3.
How much microSD capacity do Steam Deck games need?
There is no reliable “games per terabyte” number because libraries vary dramatically. Large open-world releases often occupy 50–150GB, while many indie games are 1–5GB. Use actual install sizes and leave room for patches and shader caches.

| Capacity | Practical library profile | Evidence from published guides |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | Indie-heavy or light rotation | Roughly 15–25 smaller games; another estimate gives 8–12 indie titles or a handful of AAA games |
| 512GB | Starting point for a mixed library | About 30–50 games in one estimate and 15–20 mixed games in another; three large AAA titles can nearly fill it |
| 1TB | Large-library sweet spot | About 60–100 in one mixed estimate or 25–30 larger mixed games in another |
| 2TB | Keep-almost-everything collection | Best when you refuse to uninstall; price per gigabyte can be worse than two 1TB cards |
For scale, Baldur’s Gate 3 is reported at roughly 150GB with shader cache, while Elden Ring is around 60GB. PCGamesN notes that 512GB can be consumed by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows before you add much else. Those examples explain why 1TB is the sensible default for this title.
Can a Steam Deck use a 2TB microSD card?
Yes, 2TB cards have been reported working in both LCD and OLED Decks, although Valve does not publish a maximum-capacity figure on its specification pages. Two terabytes is the ceiling of the microSDXC family, so buy only a genuine, properly identified card from a major brand.
Lexar Play is the clearest single-card value option when you need 2TB. The trade-off is price: PCGamesN has noted that a 2TB card can cost more than twice a 1TB card. Two 1TB cards let you split libraries and may be cheaper, although swapping cards is less convenient than leaving one installed.
Which cards should you buy?
SanDisk Extreme 1TB: the default
The Extreme combines the target A2/U3/V30 labels, broad availability and a lifetime limited warranty. The widely listed SDSQXAV-1T00-GN6MA SKU is rated up to 190 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write. Some newer Extreme packaging advertises 245 MB/s; identify the exact SKU rather than treating 160, 190 and 245 MB/s labels as one specification. Every version remains bus-limited in the Deck.

Samsung PRO Plus: the all-rounder
PRO Plus cards carry A2, U3 and V30 ratings, up to 180 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write, and a 10-year limited warranty. Samsung also advertises six-proof durability: waterproof, temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, magnetic-proof, drop-proof and wearout-proof. Published roundups list capacities from 256GB through 1TB in 2026.
This is the strongest alternative when the 512GB or 1TB price is lower than SanDisk’s. A 512GB example used in buying guides is model MB-MD512SA/AM, identifier B0C1PRYPYX. Verify the model and label before ordering.

Lexar Play 1TB or 2TB: the capacity-value route
Lexar Play cards are designed for portable gaming and commonly carry A2 and V30 ratings. Published batches advertise around 160 MB/s read, while some packaging lists up to 205 MB/s. Play generally has a five-year warranty, shorter than Samsung’s or SanDisk’s.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe 1TB version is the value large-library choice; the 2TB version is the practical answer for collectors who do not want to uninstall. Eurogamer’s US snapshot listed a 1TB Lexar Blue at $104.99 (10¢/GB) on 14 January 2026, and its UK snapshot listed a 2TB Lexar Play Blue at £172.09 (9p/GB) on the same date. These are dated examples, not current quotations.
SanDisk Extreme Pro: only for marginal gains
Rock Paper Shotgun’s Steam Deck timings placed Extreme Pro slightly ahead of the other cards it compared. The 2TB model is reported in the UK. It makes sense only when the price premium is small or you also use the card in a compatible PC reader; the Deck itself cannot exploit higher sequential ratings.
SanDisk Ultra: cheap capacity with slower writes
Ultra reaches capacities up to 1.5TB and is often A1/U1 rather than A2/U3/V30. Rock Paper Shotgun found read-bound game launches surprisingly close to premium cards, but slower writes make bulk installs and updates less attractive. It is a budget storage dump, not the preferred performance pick for a large active library.
Amazon Basics A2: sensible at 256GB or 512GB
Eurogamer’s US price snapshot listed the A2 card at $29.05 for 256GB and $49.99 for 512GB on 14 January 2026, with the listing rated up to 200 MB/s. It is a reasonable budget choice at those capacities when sold through the retailer’s own listing. Do not extend that recommendation to anonymous 1TB or 2TB listings with implausibly low prices.
Other credible alternatives
Kingston Canvas Go! Plus offers A2, V30 and capacities up to 1TB. PNY Pro Elite or Pro Elite Prime appeared as a 1.5TB value option in Eurogamer UK, while Integral Momentum was listed as a 1TB A2 card rated up to 210 MB/s. Use these when the three main brands are unusually expensive, and confirm the exact label and warranty for the regional SKU.
How close are microSD load times to the internal SSD?
The internal NVMe drive remains faster, but published Steam Deck timings show that a good A2 card is usually a seconds-level compromise rather than a different experience.

In that comparison, Extreme Pro was the only card to consistently beat the 512GB Deck SSD’s 15.9-second Tomb Raider load, and only by fractions of a second. A 2026 reproduction by Switchblade Gaming measured Rollerdrome at 4.75 seconds from the SSD, 5.35 seconds on a Samsung EVO Plus and 5.6 seconds on a SanDisk Ultra; Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 21.7, 26.2 and 27.0 seconds; and Days Gone at 22.2, 32.9 and 29.9 seconds. The gap between the U3/A2 and U1/A1 cards was under one second in those three tests, while the SSD-to-card gap reached about 10 seconds in Days Gone.
These figures are published game-load measurements, not a guarantee for every title. They support prioritizing capacity and A2 status instead of paying for unused sequential speed.

How do I format a microSD card on Steam Deck?
SteamOS must format the card for the Deck’s game library. Formatting erases everything on the card, so copy off any files first.
- Insert the microSD card into the slot on the Deck’s bottom edge.
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Confirm the warning and wait. Valve says the process may take a few minutes.
- After formatting, open Steam > Settings > Storage and confirm the card appears as an install location.
Steam Deck uses ext4 with casefolding. Windows and Nintendo Switch do not read that filesystem natively. Do not pre-format the card as exFAT on a Windows PC for the Steam library; FAT32 also cannot hold files larger than 4GiB.
How do I move games to the SD card on Steam Deck?
Use Steam’s Storage manager after formatting. You can move existing installations, set a default location and keep separate libraries on multiple cards.
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > Storage.
- Select the game or games installed on internal storage.
- Press Y to move the selected software, then choose the microSD library.
- Press X when you want to make the card the default install location.
For a title already installed, the Storage screen also exposes a Move action. Ejecting a card hides its games from Steam; reinserting it restores the library. Desktop Mode can manage library folders spread across internal storage, microSD and USB drives.

Should some games stay on the internal SSD?
Yes. Keep hitch-sensitive competitive games, titles that stream assets constantly and games you play every day on the internal NVMe when space permits. Put large, less I/O-intensive RPGs and games you play occasionally on the microSD card. This mixed approach preserves SSD responsiveness without giving up the card’s capacity.

What should you avoid buying?
- UHS-II, UHS-III, V60 and V90 cards: their extra bus speed is unsupported by the Deck.
- microSD Express cards: Express uses PCIe/NVMe, but in this non-Express slot the card falls back to UHS-I behavior.
- No-name 1TB or 2TB cards: fake-capacity cards can report a large size and then overwrite data.
- Overspending on sequential-read numbers: 190–245 MB/s labels do not bypass the 104 MB/s host limit.
- Unverified EVO Select listings: one published specification table calls a 512GB EVO Select A2/U3/V30, while the quoted MB-ME512SA/AM listing says U1/V10/A1. Recommend it only when the physical SKU label explicitly shows A2.
How do you avoid counterfeit microSD cards?
Purchase from the card maker or a major authorized retailer, inspect the exact model number and keep the receipt for warranty service. Be suspicious of a 1TB or 2TB card priced far below established SanDisk, Samsung or Lexar products. Before entrusting it with a library, fill-test the card with a trusted capacity-verification utility on a computer; a false-capacity card will fail when data passes its real memory limit.
What do Steam Deck microSD cards cost in 2026?
Prices are unusually volatile because of the 2026 NAND flash shortage. Rock Paper Shotgun reported some models nearly tripling year over year, and SD Card Checker described increases across capacities. Treat every figure below as a dated snapshot, not a current quote:
| Capacity and card | Region | Price and date | Approximate unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics A2 256GB | US | $29.05 on 14 Jan 2026 | 11¢/GB |
| Amazon Basics A2 512GB | US | $49.99 on 14 Jan 2026 | 10¢/GB |
| Lexar Blue 1TB | US | $104.99 on 14 Jan 2026 | 10¢/GB |
| SanDisk Extreme 2TB | US | $279.89 on 14 Jan 2026 | 14¢/GB |
| Lexar Blue 512GB | UK | £35.99 on 14 Jan 2026 | 9p/GB |
| Integral Momentum 1TB | UK | £109.95 on 14 Jan 2026 | 11p/GB |
| Lexar Play Blue 2TB | UK | £172.09 on 14 Jan 2026 | 9p/GB |
During the shortage, it can be rational to postpone a purchase, uninstall games you are not playing and use internal storage. If the requirement is a large installed library, however, a 1TB card remains the balanced capacity decision even when the price is higher than historical norms.

How we picked these cards
The selection prioritizes the Deck’s UHS-I interface, A2 random-performance class, U3/V30 sustained-write labels, usable capacity, warranty length, seller authenticity and published Steam Deck load evidence. Sequential-read figures were treated as relevant only when a card might also be used in a compatible external PC reader.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Steam Deck OLED read microSD cards faster than the LCD model?
No. Both models use the same UHS-I microSD interface, so OLED does not remove the approximately 104 MB/s host limitation. OLED’s hardware changes are elsewhere, including the display, battery, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Can I use one Steam Deck card in a Nintendo Switch?
Not without reformatting. SteamOS formats the card as ext4 with casefolding, while the Switch expects a different filesystem; reformatting destroys the Steam library on the card.
Will a faster microSD card speed up every Steam Deck game?
No. Higher sequential ratings cannot exceed the Deck’s UHS-I bus. A2 random performance can help file-heavy loading, but the internal NVMe drive remains faster and gains vary by game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is a microSD Express card worth buying for Steam Deck?
No, not for use in the Deck. Express cards use a PCIe/NVMe interface, but this slot negotiates only UHS-I, so you pay for speed the hardware cannot use.
How many 1TB cards can Steam Deck manage?
You can keep separate libraries on multiple cards and swap them while the Deck is powered down or the card is safely ejected. Steam hides games while a card is removed and makes them visible again when it is reinserted.
