Steam Deck compatibility ratings tell you how well a game fits the handheld as a whole; Proton is the compatibility tool that lets many Windows games run on SteamOS. They answer different questions: Proton may get a game running, while Valve’s rating also considers controls, screen readability, launchers, text entry, performance and system requirements. That is why a game can launch through Proton and still be marked Playable or Unsupported.
What does Steam Deck Verified mean?
Verified means Valve considers a game a good out-of-the-box fit for Steam Deck, without extra configuration being necessary. Valve describes it as a game that “works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” The badge is not simply a report that the game’s executable started once: it reflects whether the experience works well on the handheld’s screen, controls and SteamOS environment.
Valve’s review covers several practical questions. Can you use the built-in controls throughout the game? Does the interface show the right controller prompts? Is text legible at the Deck’s default resolution? Can you get through any launcher without needing a mouse? If the game asks you to type, is there an appropriate way to enter text? Valve also considers whether the game and its middleware—including anti-cheat components—work with Proton.
That broader standard matters because “runs” and “is comfortable to play on this device” are not the same thing. A title might open successfully but rely on tiny text, display keyboard prompts, require a launcher that is awkward to navigate with a controller, or fail when an online anti-cheat check begins. A Verified rating is meant to account for the complete Steam Deck experience, not just one successful launch.

What is the difference between Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown?
The four labels distinguish a ready-to-play experience, one that needs adjustments, a title Valve does not currently consider playable, and a title Valve has not checked. They are Valve’s official Steam Deck compatibility categories; Unknown is not the same as a negative test result.
| Rating | What it means | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works well on Steam Deck out of the box. | No additional modification should be necessary for the reviewed experience. |
| Playable | The game works, but may need manual adjustments. | You might need to choose a community controller layout, use the touchscreen or mouse for a launcher, or make another specified adjustment. |
| Unsupported | Valve’s current review does not consider the game playable on Steam Deck. | Do not assume it will work as-is. The label is a current judgment, not proof that no future game, Proton, driver or middleware update could change the result. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game yet. | There is no official Deck compatibility result. You will need other evidence or your own assessment. |
Playable is not a synonym for broken: it signals that the game works but the experience may involve a workaround or compromise. Unsupported is also not a permanent technical verdict. Valve says it continues to make improvements that can enable games previously considered Unsupported, while updates to a game or its online services can also affect how it behaves.
Ratings can also be more nuanced than a badge suggests. Open the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details to see which requirement is the issue or remains unresolved. A single label cannot tell you whether the obstacle is a launcher, controls, readability, performance, video playback, or anti-cheat; those distinctions determine whether a practical workaround is likely.

How does Proton work on Steam Deck?
Proton is a Steam compatibility tool based on Wine and additional components; Steam uses it to run many Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS. It is not a traditional virtual machine or a simple emulator. Instead, it provides Windows-compatible behavior and translates or connects the parts of a game’s software stack that need to work in the Linux environment.
A Windows game expects Windows APIs and runtime behavior. Proton, launched through Steam Play, supplies a compatibility layer that maps many of those expectations to Linux equivalents. This lets users play many Windows games without each developer having to build and maintain a full native Linux version. It does not guarantee that every Windows game will work: a title may depend on a feature, launcher, middleware component or anti-cheat system that Proton cannot currently support in the required way.

Graphics translation is one part of the stack. For example, DXVK translates Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 calls into Vulkan for applications running through Wine. Proton also includes components for newer Direct3D paths, as well as other compatibility and runtime pieces. The exact path depends on the game and its graphics technology; it is misleading to describe Proton as one universal graphics translator.
Proton is updated over time with component updates, patches, configuration changes and fixes aimed at specific games. Steam distributes multiple Proton versions, and the user can choose a compatibility tool for an individual game. As a result, changing the Proton build can change a game’s behavior without changing the game itself. The reverse is also true: a game update, driver change or anti-cheat update can alter compatibility even if you have not changed Proton.
Why can Proton run a game that Valve rates Unsupported?
Because Proton compatibility and Valve’s Deck rating measure different things. Proton is the tool that runs Windows software on SteamOS; the rating evaluates whether the whole game experience meets Valve’s Deck-specific criteria. A title can launch but still fail a requirement for controls, screen usability, launcher navigation, middleware or online play.
For instance, a game might boot and render correctly yet display text that is hard to read on the handheld, require mouse interaction in a launcher, or stop at an anti-cheat check when connecting online. A community report that says “it launches” may describe only the opening screen or offline play, not the full experience Valve evaluates. When comparing evidence, look beyond the word “works” and ask what was actually verified: startup, a particular game mode, a specific version, or a complete play session.
An Unsupported rating therefore means Valve does not currently consider the title playable under its review criteria. It does not mean that no one has ever run it, nor does it guarantee that it will always fail. Community reports may show a different outcome, but they are evidence to investigate rather than a promise that the same setup will work for every player.

Why might ProtonDB and Steam show different results?
Steam’s rating is an official, Deck-specific review; ProtonDB is a separate, crowdsourced source of Linux and Steam Deck reports. ProtonDB can surface practical workarounds or newer user experiences, but its reports are not Valve certification and may describe different game versions, Proton builds, launchers, online states or hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the two sources for different jobs. Start with Steam’s rating and its compatibility details to see what Valve’s review flags. If the result is Playable, Unsupported or Unknown, consult recent ProtonDB reports for the exact game and for conditions that match your situation. Give more weight to reports that identify the game version and Proton build, explain the steps taken, and say whether online play works. A report without those details may still be useful, but it is harder to apply confidently.
Do not treat either a positive report or a workaround as permanent. Proton, the game, drivers and anti-cheat systems change. A report from an earlier version may no longer describe the current experience; likewise, one person’s successful setup does not establish that every Deck revision or configuration will behave identically.
How should I check a game before buying or installing it?
Check the official rating first, inspect the reason behind it, then use recent community reports to answer the questions the badge leaves open. This approach separates Valve’s device-specific assessment from reports about particular workarounds.
- Find the game’s Steam Deck rating. Read the label, but do not stop at its color or category.
- Open the compatibility details. Identify whether the concern involves controls, display, text entry, launcher navigation, Proton, middleware or another requirement. A specific failure is more useful than a general assumption that the game “doesn’t work.”
- Check recent ProtonDB reports if needed. Look for the current game version, Proton build, launcher, online or offline mode, and a clearly described workaround. Prioritize reports that match the way you plan to play.
- Decide how much setup you are willing to do. A game that needs a one-time control-layout change may be acceptable to you; one that depends on an unreliable online anti-cheat workaround may not be.
- Recheck after significant updates. Compatibility can change when any part of the chain changes, so treat old reports as historical context rather than a guarantee.
When considering an Unknown game, remember that the label means there is no official assessment—not that the title is necessarily compatible or incompatible. Community evidence can help fill the gap, but uncertainty remains if reports are sparse, old or based on a different mode of play.

Which Proton version should I use?
Start with the default Proton tool supplied by Steam unless you have a specific compatibility problem or a well-supported reason to change it. Selecting another build can help with a game-specific issue, but switching tools at random can introduce new problems or make it harder to identify the cause of a failure.
To choose a different installed tool for one game, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility menu in Steam and enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Then select an installed Proton version. The wording or screen arrangement can vary by Steam client release, but the relevant setting is the per-game Compatibility section—not a system-wide change required for every title.
Before switching, look for a documented reason: a recent report that identifies a particular Proton build, a known launcher problem, or a behavior change after a game update. Change one setting at a time and retest the same part of the game. If the game stops working or behaves worse, return to the default or the previous setting. A version that fixes one title is not necessarily the best choice for another.

First identify which part is failing, then choose a targeted next step; a launch failure alone does not tell you whether Proton, the launcher, graphics or an online requirement is responsible. Keep the initial setup simple so you can tell whether a change helps.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Read the compatibility details. If Steam names a launcher, input or system requirement, address that issue rather than treating every failure as a graphics problem.
- Separate offline from online behavior where possible. If the game starts offline but fails when joining an online service, middleware or anti-cheat may be the relevant layer; changing graphics settings may not solve it.
- Look for a current, game-specific report. Confirm that its version, Proton build, launcher and mode of play resemble yours before following a workaround.
- Try a different Proton tool only with a reason. Use Properties > Compatibility for that game, make one change, and check whether the symptom changes.
- Undo unsuccessful changes. Restore the default or prior tool if the game becomes less reliable, and do not assume a workaround will survive later updates.
For a game that launches but feels awkward, troubleshoot the failed experience rather than the launch: check controller layouts for input problems, assess text and interface legibility, and determine whether a launcher requires touchscreen or mouse navigation. Those limitations can explain a Playable rating even when the game itself starts.

What should you take away from the ratings?
Use the rating as a guide to expected convenience, not as a universal statement about whether a Windows game can ever run on Linux. Verified is the strongest signal that the game is ready for the handheld without extra changes; Playable means it works with possible adjustments; Unsupported is Valve’s current negative assessment; and Unknown means no official check has been made. Proton is the compatibility layer behind many successful Windows-game launches, while Steam Deck ratings and community reports help explain how usable those launches are in practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Deck Verified guarantee a particular frame rate?
No. Verified describes Valve’s compatibility and usability assessment, not a promise of a fixed frame rate or identical performance in every scene. Performance can also vary with game updates, settings and the conditions under which a title is played.
Can a game’s Steam Deck rating change later?
Yes. Valve can update its assessment as games, Proton, drivers and middleware change. If you are relying on an old rating or report, check the current Steam listing and recent community information before drawing a conclusion.
