For a new US purchase, the practical choice is between the 512GB and 1TB Steam Deck OLED: Valve announced prices of $789 and $949, respectively, on May 27, 2026. The 1TB model costs $160 more at those announced prices and adds capacity, etched anti-glare glass and case extras—not a separate game-compatibility tier. A lower-cost LCD can still make sense if you find a new, used or refurbished unit at a price and condition you can verify; Valve’s current comparison page does not establish a current LCD price or guarantee that one is available to buy new.
For Linux gaming, choose based on the games you want to play, the screen and battery experience you value, and how much storage you need. Both models run SteamOS, but compatibility is title-specific. Check the games in your library before choosing a Deck.

| Steam Deck OLED, 512GB | Most buyers who want the OLED screen and listed battery improvements without paying extra for 1TB features | 7.4-inch HDR, up to 90Hz; 50Wh battery rated for 3–12 hours | $789 USD announced by Valve on May 27, 2026; verify checkout price and availability | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Deck OLED, 1TB | Players who want more built-in space, etched anti-glare glass or the included case extras | 1TB NVMe; OLED screen and battery specifications as listed for the OLED model | $949 USD announced by Valve on May 27, 2026; verify checkout price and availability | Oct 2026 |
Valve’s specifications give both generations 1280 × 800 resolution and 16GB of RAM. The battery-hour figures are manufacturer ranges that depend on the content being played, not guaranteed runtimes. Valve’s OLED specifications and its Steam Deck comparison page provide the model details; Valve’s May 27, 2026 announcement supplies the quoted US OLED prices.

Which Steam Deck should I buy?
For a new OLED purchase, choose the 512GB model unless the 1TB model’s extra internal capacity, etched glass or case accessories are worth the announced $160 difference to you. Choose an LCD only when a specific available unit’s total price, condition and warranty make it a clearly better value.

Choose the 512GB OLED for the core OLED experience
The 512GB OLED has the same listed processor, resolution, refresh ceiling and battery specifications as the 1TB OLED. It is the straightforward choice if you want the OLED display and can manage your installed library with the internal drive and, if needed, a microSD card. It is not a lower-performance OLED edition according to Valve’s listed specifications.
The screen is larger than the LCD panel despite retaining the same 1280 × 800 resolution. Its HDR support and 90Hz ceiling are most useful to buyers who notice display quality while playing handheld. They do not turn demanding games into 90-frame-per-second experiences; frame rate remains dependent on the game and its settings.
Pay more for the 1TB OLED only for its extras
The 1TB configuration gives you twice the listed factory capacity of the 512GB model, plus premium etched anti-glare glass and a removable case liner with other cosmetic extras. Those features may matter if you prefer more games installed internally or want the anti-glare finish. They do not make it a different compatibility class or establish that games run at higher frame rates.
Compare the complete checkout totals rather than relying on the announced $160 difference. Regional pricing, taxes, promotions and availability can change. If the two OLED models are temporarily priced differently, reassess whether the glass and case features justify the actual gap.
Consider LCD only when the actual deal is clear
Valve’s current comparison depicts a 256GB LCD, but that listing alone does not confirm that a new unit is currently orderable or show its current price. Older LCD configurations also included 64GB and 512GB models; do not assume the 256GB listing represents every used or refurbished Deck. Before buying an LCD, confirm the exact capacity, physical condition, seller, return terms and warranty, then compare the total cost with an OLED at checkout. Valve’s historical sale information describes older LCD models being phased out, so an old advertised price should not be treated as a current offer.
A used LCD can be sensible for a buyer who is comfortable with the 7-inch, 60Hz display and 40Wh battery. Ask for the exact model and storage, not just “Steam Deck LCD,” and check that the included charger, case and controls match the listing. A low headline price is not a bargain if a missing accessory, poor battery condition or weak return policy eliminates the savings.
What is different between Steam Deck LCD and OLED?
OLED is principally a screen-and-battery upgrade, with additional wireless and weight differences in Valve’s published specifications. It does not change the basic 1280 × 800 resolution, 16GB of RAM or the fact that game compatibility must be checked title by title.

| Memory | 16GB RAM | 16GB RAM |
| Wireless specification | Wi-Fi 5 | Wi-Fi 6E |
| Approximate weight | 669g | 640g |
These are Valve-published specifications, not independent measurements of game frame rates, wireless throughput or battery life in a particular game. A 90Hz screen provides a higher refresh ceiling than the LCD model’s 60Hz display; it does not mean every game renders at 90 frames per second. Valve’s battery estimates are broad ranges and vary with content. Valve’s specification page lists the figures for both generations.
What the specification differences mean in use
The OLED’s 50Wh battery is larger than the LCD’s 40Wh battery, and Valve publishes a 3–12-hour gameplay range for OLED versus 2–8 hours for LCD. Treat those as planning ranges, not promises: a lightweight game and a demanding 3D game can produce very different results, and display brightness, refresh settings and wireless use also affect endurance. The OLED is approximately 640g compared with the LCD’s 669g, a difference you may notice during long handheld sessions.
Wi-Fi 6E on OLED is a newer wireless specification than Wi-Fi 5 on LCD. It can be relevant if your network and region support the newer band, but the specification alone does not establish a particular download speed or lower latency. The models also share the same resolution and RAM, so do not select OLED expecting a new memory tier or a fundamentally different Linux environment.
Will my Linux games work on either model?
Compatibility depends on the individual game, not on choosing LCD instead of OLED. Both versions run Arch-based SteamOS 3 with the KDE Plasma desktop, and Valve applies the same game-compatibility rating system to LCD and OLED.

- Verified: Valve says the game works out of the box on Steam Deck.
- Playable: The game can work, but may require adjustments, such as a settings change or a different control approach.
- Unsupported: The game is currently considered nonfunctional on Deck.
- Unknown: The game has not been checked.
Valve’s testing considers Proton, the compatibility layer used to run many Windows games on Linux, as well as relevant middleware such as anti-cheat systems. A rating is a useful starting point, not a promise that every update, launcher or account requirement will behave identically forever. Check the current rating for the specific games you care about, particularly if multiplayer anti-cheat or a separate launcher is essential. Valve explains the rating system in its Steam Deck technical information.
Valve says non-Steam games can also run through Proton, but that statement is not a guarantee for every game or launcher. If a specific title matters, investigate its current Deck compatibility and any account, launcher or anti-cheat requirements before buying. Offline play after installation likewise depends on whether that game requires an online connection.

A practical compatibility check
- Write down the games and launchers you actually expect to use, including multiplayer titles.
- Open each current Steam store listing and record its Deck rating.
- For a Playable or Unknown result, check the game’s current requirements, launcher behavior and anti-cheat situation rather than assuming Proton will solve it.
- Separate “can install” from “works offline.” A game may install successfully and still require an online account or service.
- Recheck important ratings after major game updates, because classifications can change.
This process is more useful than choosing OLED on the assumption that its newer panel or wireless specification changes software compatibility.
How much Steam Deck storage do I need?
The OLED models offer 512GB or 1TB of internal NVMe storage, and both generations support UHS-I microSD cards. Decide separately how much built-in capacity you want and whether removable expansion is enough; a microSD card adds game-storage space but does not become a larger internal system drive.
Use the factory SSD for built-in capacity
The internal drive is the most direct way to get more built-in storage. For a new OLED, the choice is between 512GB and 1TB at Valve’s announced prices. Consider the 1TB model if keeping a larger library installed internally matters, or if you specifically want its etched glass and case extras. If you are comfortable expanding storage with a card and do not need those extras, the 512GB model avoids the $160 announced price difference.
Internal capacity can also be preferable when you frequently move between games, travel without reliable internet or want one simple, permanently installed library. Those are convenience preferences, not evidence that the 1TB model loads games faster or runs them better than the 512GB OLED.
Add a microSD card for removable expansion
A UHS-I microSD card is the non-invasive expansion route for either LCD or OLED. Valve says the Deck formats microSD storage as ext4 with casefolding. Confirm that a card is suitable for the UHS-I slot and check its capacity and seller before purchase; no particular card speed, capacity or game-loading advantage is established here. The card remains removable storage, not a replacement for the internal SSD.
When shopping, a useful search is “UHS-I microSDXC card for Steam Deck.” Verify the listed capacity, seller, return policy and authenticity independently. Do not treat a third-party marketplace listing as an official Valve accessory, and do not buy a card solely because its packaging claims a speed that you have not checked against the Deck’s UHS-I interface.
Use a card when you want to add or rotate games without opening the handheld. It is especially useful for a 512GB OLED owner who wants the OLED experience but does not need every title on the internal drive. If a card fails or is removed, games stored there will not be available until it is reinserted; keep that limitation in mind when planning travel or lending the device.

Replace the SSD only if you are prepared for a repair project
An SSD replacement is possible, but it involves opening the handheld and restoring or installing an operating system through additional software procedures. The separate LCD and OLED instructions from iFixit’s Steam Deck SSD replacement guides specify a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. They cover different disassembly procedures, so follow the guide for the exact model rather than assuming the steps are interchangeable.
- Identify your exact model. Select the corresponding LCD or OLED replacement instructions and confirm the SSD is a single-sided M.2 2230 drive.
- Prepare the device before opening it. Shut it down and remove any microSD card. iFixit warns that a card left in place could break when the back cover is removed.
- Use the model-appropriate procedure and tools. The OLED guide calls for a T6 Torx driver; the LCD guide lists Phillips drivers. Follow the illustrated steps for that model rather than substituting a generic teardown.
- Plan for software recovery. The physical replacement alone does not restore SteamOS. iFixit notes that installing or restoring the operating system requires additional software procedures, so have a recovery plan before disassembly.
- Protect your data and warranty position. Back up anything you need and understand the seller’s or manufacturer’s service terms before opening a device. The guides explain the procedure, but they do not turn an SSD swap into a risk-free upgrade.
If you do not want to take on disassembly and OS recovery, use a microSD card or choose the factory SSD capacity that suits your needs instead. Search terms such as “single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD Steam Deck” can help locate parts, but confirm physical compatibility for the LCD or OLED model before ordering.
Can I use the Steam Deck as a desktop computer?
Yes. Steam Deck can be connected to an external display and used with peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse and controller. Valve’s Docking Station is designed to fit both LCD and OLED models, and Valve says third-party docks and hubs can also work.
A dock provides connections and a desktop-style setup; it does not boost game performance. If you plan to connect a monitor or TV, check that the dock or hub supports the display connections and other ports you need. Valve’s Docking Station page displayed a price of $79 when checked for this guide, but accessory pricing can change, so confirm the current amount before purchase. See Valve’s Docking Station information.
For a desk or TV setup, list the peripherals you need first: display output, charging, keyboard, mouse, controller and any additional USB devices. Then compare the port layout and power arrangement of an official dock with a compatible USB-C dock or hub. The important distinction is connectivity and convenience, not a promised frame-rate increase. A dock also does not change a game’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown classification.

Use this checklist to avoid paying for the wrong capacity or assuming a game will work when it may not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Verify live US pricing and stock. Valve announced $789 for 512GB OLED and $949 for 1TB OLED on May 27, 2026. Those are the announcement prices, not a guarantee of October checkout price or inventory. The current comparison does not establish the availability or price of a new LCD.
- Confirm the exact LCD configuration. Valve’s current comparison shows 256GB, while older LCD units may be 64GB or 512GB. For a used or refurbished device, verify the specific unit rather than relying on a broad “LCD” listing.
- Check your must-play games. Look up current Deck Verified ratings for the games and launchers you need; pay particular attention to anti-cheat, multiplayer and online requirements.
- Choose storage deliberately. Decide whether factory internal capacity is important, whether a UHS-I microSD card is sufficient, or whether you are ready for an SSD-replacement and OS-recovery project.
- Price the whole setup. Include a card, dock, replacement parts or tools only if you actually need them. Accessory and regional prices can change, so verify each item at checkout.
- For a non-new unit, evaluate the whole purchase. Check condition, included accessories, seller, return policy and warranty terms. A low listed price is not enough to establish value if the device’s state or recourse is unclear.
- Keep the model-specific instructions handy. If you plan any repair, identify LCD versus OLED first, obtain the correct driver and SSD format, remove the microSD card and prepare OS recovery materials before opening the case.
Common buying mistakes
Do not use an old LCD sale price as proof of today’s new-stock price. Do not assume a 256GB LCD listing describes every older unit, and do not compare a used LCD with a new OLED without accounting for warranty and condition. Do not treat 1TB OLED as a performance tier: Valve lists the same processor, resolution and OLED refresh ceiling for both capacities.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

It is also a mistake to read “up to 90Hz” as a guaranteed frame rate, or to interpret the battery range as a fixed number of hours. Similarly, Wi-Fi 6E is a specification difference, not a promise of a particular download speed. Finally, a Verified badge is not permanent; updates, launchers and anti-cheat changes can alter how a game behaves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace the Steam Deck SSD without reinstalling SteamOS?
Do not assume the replacement is a drop-in software change. iFixit says restoring or installing an operating system requires additional software procedures, so plan for recovery before opening the device.
Is the 256GB LCD the same as every older LCD Steam Deck?
No. Older LCD configurations included 64GB and 512GB models as well as the 256GB configuration shown on Valve’s current comparison page. Check the exact capacity of a used or refurbished unit.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a Steam Deck game change from Verified to another rating later?
Compatibility ratings can change as games receive updates. Recheck the current Steam listing for a title you rely on rather than treating an old rating as permanent.
Does docking the Deck improve performance?
No. Valve’s Docking Station and compatible third-party docks provide display and peripheral connections for LCD and OLED; docking is not a performance boost.
Can I run non-Steam games through Proton on Steam Deck?
Valve says non-Steam games can run through Proton, but that is not a guarantee for every game or launcher. Check the specific title’s launcher, account, anti-cheat and online requirements.
Is the 1TB OLED faster than the 512GB OLED?
Valve’s listed specifications do not establish a separate performance tier. Both OLED capacities share the listed processor, 1280 × 800 resolution, refresh ceiling and battery specifications; the 1TB model adds capacity, etched glass and case extras.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Valve rates OLED at 50Wh and 3–12 hours of gameplay, compared with LCD at 40Wh and 2–8 hours. Actual runtime depends on the game and settings, so these are manufacturer ranges rather than guarantees.
Can I install games directly to a microSD card?
Both generations support UHS-I microSD cards, and Valve says the Deck formats them as ext4 with casefolding. A card is removable expansion storage, not a larger internal system drive.
The Bottom Line
For a new US purchase, start with the 512GB OLED at Valve’s announced $789 price and move to the $949 1TB OLED only when its extra capacity, etched anti-glare glass or case features justify the $160 difference at checkout. Treat LCD as a conditional used, refurbished or verified new-stock value option, not as a guaranteed $399 purchase. Whichever model you choose, check your specific games, budget separately for removable storage or a dock if needed, and approach an SSD swap as a model-specific repair and OS-recovery project.
