Steam does not provide one single “cloud gaming” service. The phrase covers three different features: Steam Remote Play/Steam Link, which streams a game running on your own computer; Steam Cloud Play, which connects eligible games to a cloud provider such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW; and Steam Cloud, which synchronizes saves and settings but does not run the game remotely. If you want to play without leaving a gaming PC running, you need a supported cloud provider and an eligible title. If you own a capable PC, Remote Play is Steam’s built-in way to stream its games to another device.
What does “Steam cloud gaming” actually mean?
It can mean streaming from your own computer, playing on a provider’s remote hardware, or synchronizing game data. These functions have different requirements, so identifying which one you need prevents most setup and compatibility mistakes.
Steam Remote Play and Steam Link
Remote Play runs the game on a computer where Steam is installed and signed in. That computer captures the game’s video and audio, sends them to a phone, tablet, TV, handheld, or another computer, and receives your controller, keyboard, or mouse input in return. Steam Link is the client software and supported-device experience used to receive that stream.

Cloud Play is Steamworks’ connection to external cloud-gaming providers. Valve’s documentation identifies NVIDIA GeForce NOW as the first connected service and describes Cloud Play as beta. Publishers must opt individual games in, so a title being sold on Steam does not automatically make it playable through a cloud provider.

Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud stores and synchronizes files that a game developer chooses, commonly save games and settings. It does not execute the game on a server and does not turn a basic computer into a cloud-gaming client by itself.
Can I play my Steam games in the cloud without a gaming PC?
Sometimes. You can play an eligible Steam title on provider hardware through GeForce NOW, but the game must be supported, your Steam account must be connected, and paid games generally require that you own the game. Regional access, publisher opt-in, provider membership rules, and the current catalog all apply.
What you need for provider-hosted play
- A Steam account connected to the cloud provider’s account system.
- A game that appears in the provider’s current supported catalog.
- Ownership of a supported paid title, or access to a supported free-to-play title.
- A compatible app, browser, or device in a region where the service operates.
- A reliable internet connection with latency low enough for interactive play.
Do not assume that every game in your Steam library will launch in the cloud. Check the provider’s live catalog immediately before playing; publisher participation and regional availability can change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ready-to-Play versus Install-to-Play
NVIDIA distinguishes between Ready-to-Play games, which are prepared for immediate streaming, and Install-to-Play Steam games, which are installed into cloud storage for your session when the publisher has enabled that capability. Install-to-Play can make more titles available, but it does not remove the need for publisher opt-in, ownership checks, or a compatible region and membership.
How does Steam Remote Play work?
Remote Play is a video-streaming connection between a host computer and a client device. The host performs the game’s rendering and simulation; the client displays the resulting video and audio and sends your input back. A less powerful phone, tablet, laptop, or TV can therefore control a game that your desktop PC is running.
The host must remain powered on, signed in to Steam, and able to run the game. Closing Steam, stopping the game, or putting the host to sleep ends the session. Remote Play can work across your home network or over the internet, but network quality affects image quality, responsiveness, and stability.

How do I set up Steam Remote Play Anywhere?
Use Remote Play Anywhere when the game is installed on your own Steam computer and you want to play from another computer or a Steam Link-compatible device.
- Prepare the host. Sign in to Steam on the computer with the game installed. Keep Steam running and confirm that the game launches locally.
- Prepare the client. Sign in to the same Steam account on another computer, or install Steam Link on a supported phone, tablet, TV, streaming device, Raspberry Pi, or headset.
- Pair the devices. Open Steam Link and follow its pairing prompt, or open Steam on the second computer and select the host when it appears.
- Start the session. Launch the title from the Steam Library shown on the receiving device. The game continues to run on the host while its output is streamed.
- Connect input. Pair a compatible controller or use the client device’s keyboard, mouse, or touch controls where supported.
- Adjust quality if needed. If you see stutter or delayed controls, begin with a wired connection for the host, move the client closer to the wireless router, and lower the stream quality before changing game graphics.
What equipment is required for a TV?
Steam’s Steam Link hardware guidance calls for a Steam-running computer, a display, a home network, and an input device. Steam recommends a wired network for the Steam Link setup. The original Steam Link hardware has been discontinued, so verify current hardware availability rather than assuming a new unit can be purchased from Steam.
Steam’s hardware guidance describes 720p and 1080p displays and lists controller examples. Compatibility and availability can change, so check the current Steam Link support pages for your particular TV, adapter, and controller.
Which phones, TVs, computers, and headsets support Steam Link?
Steam’s current Remote Play overview lists Steam Link availability for the following device categories:
| Device category | Platforms listed by Steam |
|---|---|
| Apple devices | iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro |
| Android devices | Android phones, tablets, and TV |
| Amazon | Amazon Fire TV |
| Computers | Windows, Linux, and macOS |
| Single-board computers | Raspberry Pi 3, 3+, 4, and 5 |
| Virtual-reality headsets | Supported Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro headsets |
Steam can change supported devices and operating-system requirements. Treat this list as a starting point and confirm the current compatibility page before buying hardware or troubleshooting an installation.

Steam’s Android support page specifies Android 5.0 or newer and recommends using a 5 GHz wireless router. Those are source-specific requirements, not a promise that every Android phone will deliver the same latency or image quality. A modern device, a strong wireless signal, and a controller usually provide a better experience than touch controls over a congested network.

How do I stream Steam games to my phone or TV?
Install Steam Link on the receiving device, pair it with the computer that runs Steam, and start the game from the displayed library. For a phone or tablet, connect a Bluetooth or USB-compatible controller if the game’s controls are unsuitable for touch. For a TV, use a supported TV app, streaming device, or computer connected to the display, then pair the controller with the device receiving the stream.
Network practices that reduce delay
- Connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet when possible.
- Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network for the client when the device and router support it.
- Keep the client within strong wireless coverage and reduce competing traffic during play.
- Prefer a lower stream resolution or bitrate when the connection cannot sustain a stable stream.
- Test the controller on the client before launching a competitive or timing-sensitive game.
A Bluetooth controller is optional, but it is often more practical than touch controls for phone and tablet sessions. Compatibility varies by device, operating system, and game.
What is Remote Play Together?
Remote Play Together lets one player run a supported local-multiplayer game and invite Steam friends to join remotely. The host owns and launches the game; invited guests do not need to own or launch it.

Check the game’s Steam store page for the Remote Play Together indicator before planning a session. Steam’s overview describes support for up to four players, with more possible over fast connections. The host can share controller input and, where supported, keyboard and mouse access. These capabilities apply only to games that implement and expose the feature; they do not cover every local multiplayer title.
What is the difference between Steam Cloud and cloud gaming?
Steam Cloud synchronizes selected files, while cloud gaming runs the game on remote hardware. Steam Cloud can help preserve progress between computers, but it cannot stream a game or supply the processing power needed to play it.
| Feature | Primary purpose | Where the game runs | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Cloud | Synchronize developer-selected saves, settings, and other data | On your local computer or another service you separately use | The developer decides which files are synchronized |
| Remote Play / Steam Link | Stream a running game to another device | Your own Steam computer | The host PC must be powered on, signed in, and running Steam |
| Steam Cloud Play | Connect eligible Steam games to a cloud-gaming provider | The provider’s cloud infrastructure | Only opted-in, supported games and regions work |
How can I check whether a game uses Steam Cloud?
Look for the Steam Cloud indicator on the game’s store page and in the Steam client. The developer determines exactly which files synchronize, so the presence of the feature does not guarantee that every configuration file or save location is included.

If a title has no Steam Cloud or another online save system, progress may remain only on the computer where it was created. This matters especially for cloud-hosted sessions, where the next launch can use a newly provisioned virtual PC.
How does GeForce NOW connect to Steam?
Steamworks’ Cloud Play documentation describes a connected-provider model: you use the provider’s client or supported access method, connect your Steam account, and launch a title that the provider supports. A subscription or other membership requirement may apply, depending on the provider’s current offering.
NVIDIA’s service documentation distinguishes Ready-to-Play and Install-to-Play behavior. A paid game generally must be owned through an eligible store account, while some free-to-play games are also supported. Catalog entries, storage behavior, plan features, access limits, and regional availability are live service details; verify them on NVIDIA’s current FAQ and membership pages before relying on a particular plan.
Why do saves matter more in cloud-hosted sessions?
A cloud session can start on a fresh virtual PC. Steam Cloud or another online save system gives the next session a way to retrieve progress. Without one, a save created inside a temporary or newly provisioned environment may not be available the next time you launch the game.
Which option should I choose?
The right method depends on whether you have a gaming PC, which title you want to play, and whether the required service is available where you live.
| Decision factor | Remote Play / Steam Link | GeForce NOW / Steam Cloud Play |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Your own Steam PC | Provider cloud infrastructure |
| Home gaming PC | Required and must run Steam | Not required |
| Game availability | Any Steam game your host can run and stream | Only provider-supported titles; Steam Cloud Play titles require publisher opt-in |
| Accounts and payment | Steam account and an owned/installed game; no separate Remote Play subscription is identified | Store ownership for paid games plus provider access or membership rules |
| Network path | Host-to-client home or internet connection | Your device-to-provider internet connection |
| Save handling | Depends on the host’s local saves and the game’s Steam Cloud integration | Steam Cloud or another online save system is important across changing virtual PCs |
| Typical use | Play your desktop library on a phone, TV, laptop, or another room’s computer | Play supported games without maintaining a gaming PC at home |
Choose Remote Play when…
- You already own a computer that runs the game well.
- You want to use your existing Steam library without checking a separate cloud catalog.
- You can leave the host powered on and maintain a good connection between host and client.
Choose provider-hosted play when…
- You do not have a gaming PC capable of running the title.
- The exact game is listed as supported in your region.
- You accept the provider’s membership, queue, storage, and session rules.
What should I do if Steam Remote Play is laggy or fails?
Start by determining whether the problem is the host, the network, the client, or the game itself. Work through these checks in order.

- Check current support documentation. Device, operating-system, and app requirements can change, particularly on TVs, streaming devices, and headsets.
What should I check before using a cloud-hosted Steam game?
- Verify the exact game in the provider’s current catalog, not merely in your Steam library.
- Confirm that your Steam account is connected to the provider.
- Check whether the title is Ready-to-Play or Install-to-Play.
- Confirm ownership or free-to-play access requirements.
- Check regional availability and the membership tier required for the session.
- Verify that Steam Cloud or another online save system is enabled before investing time in a session.
- Review the provider’s current device, browser, network, session, and storage requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Steam Link when my gaming PC is in another house?
Remote Play can work over the internet, not only inside your home, provided the host remains online and the connection between both locations is stable. Internet latency and upload capacity at the host location become especially important.
Do my friends need Steam accounts for Remote Play Together?
Invited players join through Steam’s session-invite system, so they should follow Steam’s current account and invitation requirements. They do not need to own the game itself when the title supports Remote Play Together.
Will Steam Cloud restore a save after I uninstall a game?
It can restore synchronized files when the game and developer’s integration support that behavior, but Steam Cloud is not a complete backup of every file. Confirm that the relevant save was synchronized before uninstalling or changing computers.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I play a Steam game through GeForce NOW if it is installed on my PC?
Your local installation does not determine cloud eligibility. GeForce NOW checks its own supported catalog, account connection, ownership, publisher permissions, and regional access.
Does Remote Play improve a game’s graphics quality?
No. The host computer still renders the game, so Remote Play cannot exceed the host’s hardware and in-game settings. It only transports the resulting video and audio to another screen.
