You can join the Steam beta without downloading a separate installer or submitting an application. On a SteamOS device, open Steam button > Settings > System > Beta Participation, set System Update Channel to Beta, and restart. In Big Picture Mode on Windows, macOS, or desktop Linux, use Settings > System > Beta Participation > Steam Client Update Channel > Steam Beta Update, then restart Steam. The windowed desktop client has a different path: Steam > Settings (Preferences on Mac) > Interface > Client Beta Participation.
SteamOS Beta and Preview channels update the operating system and Steam client together. Big Picture Mode and desktop participation changes the Steam client channel only. The setting is open to every Steam account, and Steam does not charge a subscription for it.
What does joining the Steam Client Beta actually do?
Joining changes the update channel for the Steam software already running on your device. Valve describes the purpose as letting users “use the latest features before they’re released.” It is an opt-in setting, not a separate product, download, or account application.

On SteamOS, the channel controls both the operating-system build and the bundled Steam client. That applies to a Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or another supported SteamOS device. On Windows, macOS, and desktop Linux, the Big Picture and windowed-client settings change only Steam itself; they do not reinstall or reimage the operating system.

Beta software can contain bugs. Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 announcement says Beta and Preview features are “still being tested.” If the device is your daily driver, keep the Stable channel unless you specifically need early fixes or features.
There is no application form. Any Steam account can opt in, and no paid Steam subscription is required. A Steam Client Beta community-group membership is separate: it provides announcements and a place for feedback, but joining that group does not switch your update channel.
How do I opt in to Steam Client Beta on SteamOS?
Use these Game Mode steps on a Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or other SteamOS hardware. The English Valve help page labels the platform “SteamOS”; some translated Valve pages still call the same section “Steam Deck.”

- Press the Steam button.
- Select Settings, then open System.
- Scroll to Beta Participation.
- Expand System Update Channel.
- Select Beta.
- Accept the prompt to restart the device.
After the restart, SteamOS checks the selected channel and downloads the appropriate build. A normal channel change does not require a USB image, factory reset, or support ticket. Keep the device connected to power and a reliable network while the update is applied.
What happens on a Steam Deck or Steam Machine?
The device receives the SteamOS Beta build and the corresponding Steam client channel. Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta notes, dated 16 October 2026, describe that line as newer than stable SteamOS 3.8. The same release work includes fixes for Steam Machine, Steam Frame wireless-adapter support, Legion Go 2, Intel Panther Lake, ASUS firmware, and other SteamOS hardware; those are operating-system-channel changes, not a Windows Big Picture toggle.
If the menu uses a slightly shorter label, Valve’s release notes refer to the same control as Settings > System > System Update Channel. The full Game Mode path above is the one to follow when Beta Participation is visible.
How do I join Steam beta in Big Picture Mode?
Big Picture Mode has its own system settings. These steps apply to the living-room interface on Windows, macOS, and desktop Linux, including a Big Picture-style interface that is not running as SteamOS Game Mode.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open the Beta Participation section.
- Expand Steam Client Update Channel.
- Select Steam Beta Update.
- Follow the prompt to restart Steam.
This changes the Steam client channel only. It does not alter Windows, macOS, or Linux, and it does not install a SteamOS image. When Steam starts again, the client checks for the beta build and updates itself through the normal Steam updater.
Current Valve wording uses a dropdown named Steam Client Update Channel. Older guides may show a checkbox such as “Participate in client beta”; that label is not the current Big Picture path.
How do I enable Steam beta in the windowed desktop client?
Use the desktop path when Steam is running in its normal window, including SteamOS Desktop Mode. It is different from both SteamOS Game Mode and Big Picture Mode.
- With Steam open, click Steam in the upper-left corner. On macOS, choose Steam > Preferences.
- Open Settings (or Preferences on Mac).
- Select the Interface tab.
- Find Client Beta Participation and open its dropdown.
- Select Steam Beta Update.
- Choose Restart Now when Steam asks.
This is the correct route for a SteamOS user who has switched to Desktop Mode and is looking at the windowed client. Some older articles put the control under Account; Valve’s 2026 wording places it under Interface.

Choose the channel according to what you want updated and how much instability you can accept.
| Option | What updates | Stability | Typical user | How you select it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stable | Released SteamOS and/or released Steam client | Highest | Default daily-driver setup | System Update Channel = Stable, or the client dropdown is not on Steam Beta Update |
| Beta (SteamOS) | SteamOS and Steam client pre-release builds | Pre-release; bugs are possible | SteamOS owners wanting the next operating-system and client changes | System Update Channel = Beta |
| Preview (SteamOS) | SteamOS and Steam client builds earlier than Beta | Less stable than Beta | Testers who accept a higher chance of breakage | System Update Channel = Preview |
| Steam Beta Update (Big Picture or desktop) | Steam client only | Pre-release | Big Picture and desktop users seeking client changes | Steam Client Update Channel or Interface > Client Beta Participation = Steam Beta Update |
On SteamOS, selecting Beta or Preview is also how you receive matching client builds. Valve’s SteamOS announcements commonly describe client hotfixes as an updated Steam Client being shipped to the Preview or Beta channel. On a non-SteamOS computer, the equivalent Steam Beta Update selection leaves the operating system untouched.
Is Preview newer than Beta?
Preview is the less-stable SteamOS channel. It can expose work before it reaches Beta, so it is intended for users who can recover from more serious regressions. If you want an early build with a lower risk than Preview, choose Beta.

Why join the beta now?
The practical reason is access to client or SteamOS changes before they reach Stable, plus the ability to report problems while the code is still being developed. Features eventually graduate to Stable, so beta participation is not a permanent requirement for using them.

Valve employee lostgoat’s 28 October 2026 Steam Client Beta announcement listed improved Quick Access Menu responsiveness in Big Picture Mode, fixes for per-friend notifications, and a restyled Linux updater interface. A 26 October 2026 update added a dedicated widget above chat text entry for Big Picture game invites, including group-chat invitations; consolidated friend-chat toasts; GameInput v4; faster local Remote Play startup; and SteamOS/Deck fixes for updates hanging at 99 percent and a resume-from-suspend crash. These are examples of the type of work a client beta can expose, not promises that every build will contain each item.
Recent SteamOS Beta examples
SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta, announced by Valve on 16 October 2026, was still ahead of stable SteamOS 3.8 and included changes for newer SteamOS hardware and firmware. A SteamOS channel is therefore useful when you need operating-system fixes or device support that cannot be delivered through a Windows, macOS, or Linux client-only toggle.
Earlier 2026 client work
September 2026 client-beta notes and contemporaneous coverage described Big Art Mode home-screen work, built-in screensavers, an always-visible Proton/compatibility dropdown on Linux, and an optional SteamOS boot-to-Desktop-Mode setting. Valve’s 13 October 2026 Stable client notes later mentioned Big Art Mode, illustrating why a beta feature should be treated as early access rather than a permanent beta exclusive.
How do I leave Steam beta and go back to Stable?
Return to the same setting used to opt in, choose the non-beta channel, and restart.
SteamOS Game Mode
- Press the Steam button and choose Settings > System.
- Open Beta Participation and expand System Update Channel.
- Select Stable, then restart when prompted.
If you are on Preview and want a tested-but-not-stable line rather than the released channel, select Beta instead of Stable.
Big Picture Mode or desktop Steam
- Open the same Beta Participation or Client Beta Participation control you used earlier.
- Choose the non-beta item shown in the dropdown, rather than Steam Beta Update.
- Restart Steam.
Valve’s English help text does not specify one universal label for that non-beta item, so use the option displayed by your client language and version instead of looking for a particular word such as “None.”

What should I do if the beta switch does not work?
Most channel changes complete after a restart and an ordinary Steam update check. If the prompt is missing, the download stalls, or the device keeps returning to the old channel, work through these checks.
- Verify the interface: SteamOS Game Mode uses System Update Channel; Big Picture uses Steam Client Update Channel; windowed desktop Steam uses Interface > Client Beta Participation. A setting from one interface will not appear in another.
- Restart fully: accept Steam’s restart prompt, and on SteamOS allow the device to reboot rather than only closing the settings panel.
- Check storage, power, and network: a channel build must download and install. Low free space, a weak connection, or a nearly empty battery can delay the process.
- Allow the updater to finish: do not interrupt a SteamOS update because the progress display pauses briefly. If it repeatedly hangs at the same point, return to Stable when the menu remains accessible.
- Check current discussions: Valve’s Steam Client Beta community discussions can reveal a build-specific regression and provide a place to report it. Steam Support is the appropriate route when the channel switch fails to restart or download.
There is no published Valve percentage for beta crash rates, download failures, or the typical time a client beta remains outside Stable. Treat reports as build-specific rather than assuming a fixed failure rate.
Is the Steam Client Beta group the same as opting in?
No. The public Steam Client Beta Steam Community group is an announcement and feedback hub. Its page showed 418,304 members, 13,469 in-game members, and 78,894 online in a 29 October 2026 snapshot; those counters move continuously and are not an official census of opted-in accounts.
The group was founded on 8 January 2013, and its description says that testing and feedback are an enormous help. You can join it for news or discussion, but only the device settings above switch your Steam client or SteamOS channel.
How is this different from a game-specific beta?
This guide covers the Steam client and, on SteamOS, the operating-system channel. A game’s own test branch is selected separately from that game’s library entry, using Properties > Betas. Selecting Steam Beta Update does not enroll you in any individual game’s beta, and choosing a game branch does not change Steam’s client channel.
Valve’s January 2026 client-beta work also changed parts of the game-beta interface, so the exact game properties layout can vary by client version. Keep the two choices separate when troubleshooting a game that shows different builds.

Do I need to apply for Steam Client Beta?
No. The channel is open to every Steam account, with no application review or subscription fee. You opt in locally from the SteamOS, Big Picture, or desktop settings menu.

Is there a Steam Beta download?
There is no supported standalone Steam Beta installer for this process. Steam downloads the selected client or SteamOS channel after you change the setting and restart.
Can I join Steam Beta without owning a Steam Deck?
Yes. Big Picture Mode and the windowed desktop client support the Steam Beta Update channel on Windows, macOS, and desktop Linux. A Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or other SteamOS device is needed only for the SteamOS operating-system channel.
Will joining Steam Beta erase my games?
A normal channel switch is an in-place update and does not call for a factory reset or USB reinstallation. Keep backups of important saves as a general precaution, especially before choosing the less-stable Preview channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join Steam Client Beta without a Steam account subscription?
Yes. Any Steam account can opt in, and Steam does not require a paid subscription for client-beta access. The setting is available directly in the running client or SteamOS interface.
Does SteamOS Beta update my operating system or only Steam?
It updates both the SteamOS build and the bundled Steam client. By contrast, Steam Beta Update in Big Picture Mode or windowed desktop Steam changes only the client on Windows, macOS, or desktop Linux.
What is safer for a daily-use Steam Deck: Beta or Preview?
Beta is the safer of the two pre-release SteamOS channels. Preview is earlier and less stable, so choose it only if you can tolerate more breakage and recover when needed.
Where do I report a problem with a Steam beta build?
Use the Steam Client Beta Steam Community discussions for build-specific reports and feedback. Contact Steam Support if the channel switch cannot restart or download.
