Steam beta branches affect both mods and multiplayer because each branch installs a different build of a game. A mod made for one build may not work correctly on another, and players generally need compatible client and server builds to connect. To check or change your branch, open the game’s Steam Library properties and select Game Versions & Betas. Use the default branch for the live release, or a named branch only when you and your mods, friends, or server are meant to use that build.
What is a Steam beta branch?
A Steam branch is a named build of a game that its developer has made available publicly or privately. Valve’s Steamworks documentation calls branches “specific builds of your application that you have made available publicly or privately through Steam.” The terms branch, beta and version are used interchangeably in this context, although “beta” originally referred mainly to testing an upcoming update.
The default or public branch is the live customer version. A developer can also publish an experimental preview, a password-protected test build, or an older build preserved for players who need it. Branch names cannot contain spaces. If a branch is password-protected, you must enter its password before Steam will show it to you or let you access its build.
Branches are not just a testing switch. Valve’s 2025 Steam Dev Talks described them as a way to manage release risk, test updates, and help balance multiplayer. Keeping an older build available can also give players and mod authors time to adapt to a major update.

How do I opt into or out of a Steam beta branch?
Change the branch in the Steam desktop client. Steam then downloads the selected build and replaces the currently installed game files; it does not keep a second branch of that same app installed alongside the first.
- Open Library in Steam and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then open Game Versions & Betas. Older instructions may call this the Betas tab.
- Choose the branch you need from the available options. Select None or the default/public option to return to the live build. A private branch may require a password before it appears.
- Wait for Steam to download and install the selected branch, then launch the game. Steam displays an indicator near the Play button when a non-default branch is selected.
If a named historical version is not listed, the developer may not have published it as a branch. The branch selector can only offer builds made available for that game and account.
Why did a Steam beta or game update break my Workshop mods?
Mods depend on the game build they were created or tested against. An update can change the game’s files or behavior, so a mod that worked on the old build may stop working, behave unpredictably, or contribute to save problems on the new one.

That can leave a player with a new game build and a mod version that was made for a different one. Valve has warned that this mismatch can affect long-running saves; it describes players with dozens or hundreds of hours of progress as a motivating case for version control. Valve has not published a Steam-wide percentage of mods that break after updates, so there is no reliable universal failure rate.
In 2026, Valve announced Workshop item versioning, a capability introduced with Steamworks SDK 1.60. It allows mod creators to mark an item version as valid for a range of Steam branches. When a game and its mod authors use this system, Steam can deliver the item version associated with the player’s selected branch rather than treating every upload as suitable for every build.

Why the feature does not fix every mod
Branch-aware Workshop downloads require developer setup. The developer must keep the relevant builds as ordered Steam branches and enable Enable Game Branch Versions in the game’s Workshop configuration. Mod authors must also set supported branch ranges for their item versions. If a game has not enabled the feature, or a mod version has no range, Steam cannot reliably determine that the mod is unsuitable for the current build.
Valve’s rule for an untagged item version is that Steam assumes it works with any build. If more than one version is marked compatible with the selected branch, Steam downloads the latest uploaded compatible version. That compatibility label is metadata, not proof that the mod actually works; an author may not have tested every branch. If a mod appears untagged, do not assume that it was verified against the build you are running.
How branch ranges work
Mod authors can set a minimum and maximum game branch for an item version. The two endpoints may be the same if that upload is intended for one branch only. Leaving one endpoint empty makes the range open-ended on that side; leaving both empty makes the version valid for all branches. In practical terms, a simple mod expected to work across updates may be given a broad range, while a complex mod can be limited until its author confirms support for a newer build.
When multiple item versions qualify for a player’s branch, Steam selects the most recently uploaded qualifying version. If the developer has enabled branch-aware support, the Workshop item’s change notes or history may show the supported game-version information. This is useful evidence about the author’s declared compatibility, not a guarantee that every combination of mods and saves is safe.
What should I do if my mods stop working after an update?
First determine whether the problem is a build mismatch or an individual mod issue. Check the branch in Steam, then check the mod’s update history and any supported-version information the game exposes. If the game developer preserved the previous build and your mod set worked there, opting into that historical branch may restore a compatible combination.

- In Steam, open the game’s Properties → Game Versions & Betas and note the selected branch.
- Check the Workshop item’s Change Notes or history for supported game branches, if the game has branch-aware Workshop versions enabled.
- If the game publishes the known-good older build as a branch, select it, let Steam finish downloading it, and relaunch the game.
- If you want to use the current live build, return to None or the default branch and check whether the mod author has uploaded a compatible version.
- If the game still reports a version problem after the branch switch, use Steam’s game-file verification option. Valve’s
ISteamApps::MarkContentCorruptAPI describes how a game can force verification after detecting an outdated client; that API is a developer mechanism, not a player-facing button.
Changing branches is not a substitute for protecting an important save. Valve specifically identifies the possibility of mod and save incompatibility as a reason for branch support. Before loading a long-running save with a different game build or mod combination, preserve a separate backup using the game’s available save-management options.

You and your friend may be running different builds. A player on a preview or experimental branch will often be unable to join someone on the public branch if the game’s networking protocol or version checks require matching builds. The exact connection rules are implemented by each game; Steam does not document a single universal matchmaking switch that rejects every cross-branch session.
Compare the selected branch on both players’ machines under Properties → Game Versions & Betas. For a private or public dedicated server, the server build matters too. Players hoping to join together should use the branch and patch expected by the host or server, rather than assuming that similarly named branches are identical across different games.
Valve’s API reference uses a client/server version mismatch as an example of a game detecting an out-of-date client. A game may show an error, ask the player to update, or take other action. If you moved to an older branch to keep mods working, expect that choice to limit access to live multiplayer unless the server and other players use a compatible build too.
Check dedicated-server branches separately
A dedicated server is installed or updated separately from a player’s game. Its branch must be selected deliberately when installing or updating it. For example, SteamCMD commands for games that use these branch names may specify -beta public for the stable build or -beta experimental for the experimental build. Names vary by game and can change, so use that game’s current server instructions rather than copying a branch name from another title.

For a server app that supports SteamCMD branch selection, the general update form is steamcmd +app_update <id> -beta <name> validate, replacing the angle-bracketed values with the correct app ID and branch name for that game. Some hosting workflows can retain a previously selected branch if the option is omitted. When the intent is to return to stable, explicitly selecting the documented public branch is safer than assuming that omitting the flag resets it.
Can the game switch branches from its own menu?
Some games can offer branch switching in-game through Valve’s Steamworks APIs, but it is up to the developer to implement the option. The feature can make it easier to opt into a preview, return to a save-compatible version, or identify a mismatch between subscribed mods and the running build.
For a mod check, the game can query the player’s active branch, inspect the supported game-version range for subscribed items, and warn if a mod does not match. It can then ask permission before switching branches. Valve’s ISteamApps::SetActiveBeta call exits the running game, switches branches, starts downloading the new branch’s content, and restarts the game on that version. Because that process replaces the installed build, it is not an instantaneous in-game toggle.
The developer-facing APIs include GetCurrentBetaName to identify the active beta branch, GetNumBetas and GetBetaInfo to enumerate known branches, GetAppBuildId to retrieve the current build ID, and SetActiveBeta to request a switch. The build ID can change as the game’s backend is updated, so it should not be treated as a permanent version label.

How should developers and mod authors prevent branch conflicts?
The branch-aware system works best when the game build and mod release process are coordinated. Valve’s guidance is to keep historical builds in a deliberate oldest-to-newest branch order, enable Game Branch Versions, and let mod authors test an upcoming game build before promoting it to the default branch.

- Publish and maintain named branches for supported builds, using clear version-based names such as
version_1.4andversion_1.5. - Enable Enable Game Branch Versions in the game’s Workshop configuration and publish the change.
- Use Steamworks APIs to identify the player’s active branch and query each subscribed item’s supported game-version data.
- Show players which subscribed mods do not match the running build, then ask before switching their game branch.
- Upload each mod version with minimum and maximum supported branches, and keep those ranges current as new game builds ship.
- For a breaking update, release a preview branch first so mod authors have an opportunity to update their items before the public branch moves.
Steam’s versioning tools provide a mechanism for preserving compatibility; they do not make a developer’s or mod author’s compatibility choices automatically. A title that has not opted into the system will not gain branch-aware Workshop downloads or in-game mod switching just because Steam has released the relevant APIs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will switching a Steam beta branch uninstall the game?
The branch change replaces the installed build’s game files rather than maintaining two installs of the same app. If disk space or a second separate installation matters, check the game’s own options; a branch selection alone is not a side-by-side install feature.
Can I keep playing an old Steam version indefinitely?
Only if the developer continues to make that build available and Steam can access it for your account. A historical branch is not guaranteed to remain published forever, so do not treat it as a permanent archive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Steam tell me which mods are compatible with my game version?
Only when the game and item creators have supplied the relevant branch-version data. The Workshop system treats an item version without a declared range as valid for all branches, which may not reflect actual compatibility.
