Steam and itch.io give buyers different kinds of AI information, while GOG’s current position is not verified from public official materials. Steam collects a developer disclosure in its Steamworks Content Survey, focused on generative content that ships in the game or is created while it runs—not simply on using AI tools to work more efficiently. itch.io provides an explicit AI Disclosure field, tags, and an AI-assisted browse page, with strict enforcement for game-asset pages. For GOG, no current official disclosure rule or standard store-page label could be confirmed as of October 25, 2026. A missing label on any storefront is therefore not proof that a game used no AI; it may reflect the platform’s scope, the creator’s wording, or an interface that does not expose the underlying survey.

How can buyers compare AI disclosure across Steam, itch.io and GOG?

The practical comparison is about what each platform asks creators to disclose, where that information appears, and what the platform says it enforces. Steam has a formal pre-release survey and a defined split between pre-generated and live-generated content. itch.io exposes a creator-facing disclosure field and buyer-facing tags, and it specifically warns that untagged game-asset pages can be delisted. GOG’s current official rule and buyer-facing presentation could not be verified, so any claim that it has—or does not have—a mandatory policy would go beyond the available evidence.

Platform Creator submission described in official material AI use covered What a buyer can see Live or runtime generation Enforcement or status
Steam Steamworks Content Survey completed before a store page and product build are submitted for review Generative content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, including artwork, sound, narrative and localization; efficiency gains from development tools are outside the stated focus Survey information is connected to customer understanding and the store-page/build review, but the documentation does not establish a universal public badge or a single location on every page Reported separately as “Live-Generated”; developers must describe safeguards against illegal output Valve compares answers with the submitted build and store page; some approved answers cannot be edited without contacting Steam Support
itch.io AI Disclosure section on the project edit page, with declarations and sub-tags announced for graphics, sound, text and dialog, and code Materials produced by generative AI; ordinary game AI and self-contained algorithms such as pathfinding or procedural level generation are excluded from the generative-AI tags Declared projects can receive an AI Generated or No AI tag and appear on an AI Assisted browse page The creator’s disclosure describes the project; the guidance does not create a separate runtime category equivalent to Steam’s labels Disclosure is strictly enforced for game-asset pages; an untagged page may be delisted. Quality guidance also discourages minimally curated or mass-produced AI pages
GOG No current official developer rule or disclosure field was verified in the materials located for this comparison Not verified Not verified from an official current source Not verified Do not infer a policy, or the absence of one, from another platform. Check current GOG documentation or obtain a direct statement

This table is a comparison of platform documentation, not an audit of individual games. A creator can use AI in ways that fall outside a platform’s defined field, and a storefront can change its page design without changing the underlying rule.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure actually cover?

Steam’s official Content Survey is aimed at generative AI used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Valve’s examples include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. The survey explicitly says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That wording matters: a developer’s use of an AI coding assistant, planning tool or internal workflow may not be the thing the survey is asking the developer to report.

For buyers, a Steam disclosure should therefore be read as a statement about content or a player-facing service in the product. It is not a guarantee that no AI-assisted software was used anywhere in production. Conversely, a game without an obvious AI statement should not automatically be treated as proof that its developers used no AI tools; the public page may not expose every survey response, and the survey’s scope is narrower than “any AI involvement.”

How are Steam’s “Pre-Generated” and “Live-Generated” categories different?

Pre-Generated refers to AI-assisted material made during development and then shipped in the game for players to consume. A set of generated textures included in the installed build, generated dialogue that is fixed before release, or machine-assisted localization shipped as text would fit the kind of content Valve describes.

Live-Generated refers to content produced by AI while the game is running. This can change what a player sees or hears from session to session rather than being a fixed asset created before launch. Valve requires developers reporting live generation to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output, so buyers should look for an explanation of those safeguards when a game relies on runtime generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve also says its pre-release review evaluates AI-generated output under the same stated commitments as non-AI output. Those commitments include avoiding illegal or infringing content and keeping the shipped result consistent with the game’s marketing. The presence of an AI disclosure does not exempt a game from those requirements.

What does Valve do with the survey answers?

Valve says survey responses support pre-release review and help customers understand how a product’s content matches expectations and preferences. Reviewers compare the answers with the submitted build and store page. This makes the survey relevant to both platform review and buyer information, but it should not be described as a complete audit of every tool, model or contractor involved in development.

The Steam documentation also notes that some survey results cannot be edited after approval without contacting Steam Support. If a developer changes how AI is used after approval, the public information may therefore require a support interaction rather than a simple self-service edit. That limitation is one reason to treat a disclosure as a dated platform statement, not as a permanent technical inventory.

Where can buyers find Steam’s AI information?

Steam’s documentation establishes the survey and its role in review and customer understanding, but it does not establish one universal, always-visible AI badge on every store page. The exact presentation can depend on the product, the information the developer provides, and Steam’s current page design.

When evaluating a Steam game, start with the store page and read the description, content notes, developer announcements and frequently asked questions rather than relying on a single icon. Search the page for terms such as “generative,” “AI-generated,” “live-generated,” “procedural,” or “machine-generated,” then check whether the statement identifies the affected material. A clear statement should tell you whether the use concerns art, sound, writing, localization, runtime dialogue or another player-facing feature.

Do not treat a missing phrase as a negative certification. Steam’s survey is completed by developers for review, and the public-facing material may not enumerate every production tool. The useful question is not simply “Is there an AI label?” but “What content does the developer say is AI-created, and is that content in the shipped game or generated during play?”

How does itch.io’s AI Disclosure system work?

itch.io’s creator guidance asks projects containing materials produced by generative AI to use the AI Disclosure section on the project edit page. The platform defines generative AI in terms of systems that create new content by learning from large datasets. The field is intended to describe the project’s materials, not every algorithm used to make a game responsive.

An administrator announcement dated November 20, 2024 described a “Generative AI disclosure” field with sub-tags for graphics, sound, text and dialog, and code. In that announced design, declaring that a project uses generative AI adds an AI Generated tag, while declaring that it does not adds a No AI tag. The current creator guidelines are the better reference for practical compliance, because interface details can change after an announcement.

What does the itch.io tag tell a buyer?

Disclosed projects can appear on itch.io’s AI Assisted browse page, giving buyers a way to find projects whose creators have identified generative-AI involvement. The sub-tags can make a declaration more useful than a generic badge: a buyer can distinguish a project that identifies generated graphics from one that identifies generated dialogue or code.

These tags are creator declarations, not an independent inspection of the project’s files, model history or training data. They help you ask a more precise follow-up question—“Which assets or systems are covered?”—but they do not by themselves establish the model used, the percentage of content generated, or the licensing status of every output.

Which kinds of game technology do not need itch.io’s generative-AI tags?

itch.io’s guidance distinguishes generative AI from traditional game AI and self-contained algorithms. Its examples of systems that do not need the generative-AI tags include NPC pathfinding, procedural level generation, fuzzy logic, dynamic difficulty adjustment and dynamic music. Those systems can still create changing game behavior or content, but they are not automatically treated as large-dataset generative systems under the guidance.

This distinction prevents a common buying mistake: assuming that every procedural or adaptive feature is evidence of generative AI. A roguelike that assembles levels from rules, or an enemy that chooses routes through a navigation algorithm, may be procedurally generated without using a generative model. Conversely, a game can use a generative model for dialogue or images even if most of its world is built with conventional tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What enforcement does itch.io describe?

itch.io says disclosure is strictly enforced for game-asset pages because of legal ambiguity around rights associated with generative-AI content. Its guidance warns that an untagged asset page may be delisted. That is a stronger, more specific public enforcement statement than the material located for the other two storefronts.

The platform’s quality guidance also discourages excessive automatically or AI-generated content, minimally curated projects and mass-produced pages. The stated expectation is that any automatic or AI generation should be clearly disclosed in the project description and should add substantial value to the user experience. A tag is therefore not a substitute for a meaningful description of what was generated and how it contributes to the project.

For buyers, enforcement changes how to interpret an itch.io page. A visible disclosure is useful evidence that the creator has made the required declaration. An apparently untagged asset page may warrant caution or a question to the creator, but it is not enough to conclude that a page definitely violates the rules; the page type, the material involved and the current guidelines matter.

What is known about GOG’s AI-disclosure policy?

No current official GOG developer document or GOG statement describing a mandatory generative-AI disclosure field on game pages was verified for this comparison, checked October 25, 2026. That is an evidence limit, not proof that GOG has no policy. A secondary article describing the issue as unclear cannot establish a current rule in place of GOG’s own documentation.

The careful buyer-facing wording is: “We could not verify a public, current GOG AI-disclosure rule in the official materials located for this comparison.” Avoid turning that into “GOG has no AI policy.” Policies can exist in developer agreements, support responses or page systems that are not publicly indexed, and storefront interfaces can change.

Because no official current field or label was verified, the buyer-facing presentation on GOG must be marked not verified rather than inferred from Steam or itch.io. If AI use affects your purchase decision, check the game’s own description and developer communications, then ask the publisher or developer directly what content was generated and whether it is created before release or during play.

How should you check a game before buying it?

Use the platform’s own signal first, then look for a content-specific explanation. The following process keeps a missing label from being mistaken for a clean bill of health and separates fixed assets from runtime generation.

Steam checklist

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page. Read the description, content notes, developer announcements and FAQ sections rather than scanning only the short summary.
  2. Search the page for AI-related terms. Look for “generative AI,” “AI-generated,” “pre-generated,” “live-generated,” “machine-generated,” and specific terms such as generated dialogue or localization.
  3. Identify the affected material. Note whether the statement concerns artwork, sound, narrative, localization or a feature that creates content while the game runs.
  4. Check for runtime safeguards. If the game generates content live, look for an explanation of moderation or other guardrails. Valve says developers must describe safeguards against illegal output for live-generated use.
  5. Separate production tools from shipped content. A developer’s use of an AI tool for efficiency is not the focus of Steam’s generative-content survey, so do not assume that a workflow disclosure answers the question of what players receive.
  6. Ask for clarification when the statement is vague. A developer update or support reply can be more precise than a short store-page sentence, especially when a game has changed after its initial review.

itch.io checklist

  1. Open the project page and its description. Look for the AI Generated or No AI tag and for a written explanation of the project’s materials.
  2. Check the disclosed categories. If sub-tags are shown, note whether the declaration covers graphics, sound, text and dialog, or code.
  3. Use the AI Assisted browse page for discovery. A listing there indicates that the project has been disclosed or categorized through itch.io’s system, not that the platform independently verified every asset.
  4. Distinguish generative models from ordinary game algorithms. Pathfinding, procedural levels, fuzzy logic, dynamic difficulty and dynamic music are identified by the guidance as examples that do not require the generative-AI tags.
  5. Read the project description for context. The guidance asks creators to state clearly what is automatically or AI generated and how it adds substantial value to the experience.
  6. Be cautious with asset pages. itch.io says untagged game-asset pages may be delisted, so an unclear or missing declaration is a reason to seek clarification before buying or downloading.

GOG checklist

  1. Read the store page and publisher notes. Look for any statement about generated art, dialogue, localization, sound or runtime systems.
  2. Check the game’s official updates. Patch notes and developer posts may describe a feature added after the original store listing.
  3. Look for current GOG developer guidance. Because a public rule was not verified here, use a current official source rather than copying Steam’s or itch.io’s categories.
  4. Ask the publisher when the distinction matters. Request a specific answer about which shipped materials use generative AI and whether any content is created while the game runs.
  5. Record the date of the answer. A store page and a game build can change, so a dated statement is more useful than an undated assumption.

How can you interpret an AI label without overreading it?

Labels answer a narrower question than many buyers expect. Use the following distinctions when comparing statements across storefronts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question What a platform statement can support What it cannot establish by itself
Was generative AI used in content players receive? A declared use in the scope defined by that platform, such as shipped art, sound, narrative or localization That every asset was generated, or that no undisclosed production tool was used
Is content generated during play? A live-generation declaration, where the platform defines one, and any stated safeguards That moderation is perfect or that every possible output has been independently tested
Is the output legally clear? Steam’s requirement that submitted output meet the same stated commitments as non-AI content; itch.io’s warning about rights ambiguity A legal opinion about training data, ownership or license status for a particular asset
Does “No AI” mean no algorithms? On itch.io, a creator’s declaration about generative AI under the platform’s definition That the game contains no pathfinding, procedural generation, adaptive difficulty or other conventional game AI
Does no visible label mean no AI? Only that no relevant public statement was found on the page you checked That the developer used no AI, or that the platform requires a public label for every use

What are the most common mistakes when comparing storefronts?

Assuming a missing label is a negative declaration

Steam’s survey is a developer submission used in review, and the public page may not display a universal badge. GOG’s current public rule was not verified at all. Treat absence of a visible label as “not stated,” not as “no AI.”

Calling every procedural feature generative AI

Traditional systems such as pathfinding and rule-based level generation can produce variation without learning from a large dataset. itch.io explicitly separates those systems from the generative-AI tags, so ask what technology is actually being described.

Confusing pre-generated assets with live generation

A fixed image or line of dialogue made during development has a different player impact from a model that creates new material during a session. Steam’s two categories are useful precisely because they separate those cases and attach an additional safeguard requirement to live generation.

Treating a platform survey as a complete audit

Valve says it compares survey answers with the submitted build and store page, which supports review and customer information. That does not mean the survey inventories every internal experiment, contractor tool or development shortcut. The buyer-relevant issue is the content and service that ships or runs in the product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a secondary GOG claim as if it were an official rule

An article saying that GOG’s position is unclear does not prove what GOG requires. Use current GOG documentation or a direct platform statement before making a categorical claim about disclosure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which platform gives buyers the clearest signal?

On the evidence available, itch.io offers the most explicit buyer-facing labeling: a named disclosure field, category sub-tags, an AI Assisted browse page and a stated delisting risk for untagged game-asset pages. Steam offers a more formal review-linked process and a useful distinction between pre-generated and live-generated content, but its documentation does not establish a single public badge that appears identically on every product page. GOG cannot be ranked on disclosure clarity because a current official rule and presentation were not verified.

“Clearest” does not mean “most complete.” itch.io’s tags still depend on a creator declaration and do not independently test model provenance or rights. Steam’s survey connects disclosure to a submitted build and store page, yet its focus is player-consumed generative content rather than every AI-assisted production activity. The right comparison depends on whether you care most about visible labeling, runtime generation, enforcement, or the scope of the statement.

How should different buyers use this information?

If you want to avoid generative assets

Prioritize a specific statement about art, sound, text and dialogue, localization and code. On itch.io, inspect the category sub-tags and written description; on Steam, read the store-page language for pre-generated content and ask the developer if the wording is incomplete. Do not use “No AI” as a claim that the game has no conventional procedural or adaptive systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are concerned about live-generated content

Ask whether the game creates material while it runs, rather than merely shipping assets made with AI during development. Steam’s live-generated category is the clearest terminology in the available documentation, and Valve says developers must describe safeguards against illegal output. On itch.io and GOG, request an equivalent plain-language explanation because the same two-category presentation was not verified.

If rights and provenance are your priority

Use the label as a starting point, not a legal certification. itch.io highlights legal ambiguity around rights associated with generative-AI content, while Steam requires submitted output to meet the same stated commitments as non-AI output. Ask the developer which assets are affected, what review or licensing process was used, and whether the statement applies to the current build.

If you are comparing games across stores

Write down the platform, page wording and date you checked. A Steam survey, an itch.io tag and a GOG publisher reply are different evidence types; placing them in one column labeled “AI: yes/no” erases the scope and confidence of each statement. Compare like with like: shipped content with shipped content, runtime generation with runtime generation, and official policy with official policy.

What should you do when a disclosure seems incomplete?

First, identify the missing detail rather than making a broad accusation. Is it unclear whether the use concerns graphics or dialogue? Does the page describe a fixed asset but not runtime generation? Does a “No AI” declaration appear to refer to generative models while the game prominently uses procedural systems? A focused question is more likely to produce a useful answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Quote the exact store-page wording you are asking about.
  • Ask whether the current released build, not an earlier demo, contains the described material.
  • Ask whether any model creates content during play.
  • Ask which categories are affected: graphics, sound, text and dialog, localization, or code.
  • Save the response and its date so you can compare it with later patches or editions.

If the issue concerns an itch.io game-asset page that appears to lack the required disclosure, the platform’s guidance indicates that delisting is possible. A buyer can contact the creator or use the platform’s available reporting route rather than assuming that every untagged page has the same status. For Steam and GOG, use the platform’s current support channels for policy questions, because the public materials do not promise an identical reporting or correction workflow.

How current is this comparison?

This comparison reflects official Steam and itch.io materials checked on October 25, 2026, plus the itch.io developer announcement dated November 20, 2024. Storefront labels, survey fields and enforcement practices can change, and a game’s content can change after approval. Recheck the live page and the platform’s current developer documentation when the distinction affects a purchase, a distribution decision or a rights assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I search Steam for every game that uses generative AI?

No universal Steam search filter for every form of AI use is established by the documentation. Search each store page and its developer updates, then ask whether the statement covers shipped assets, runtime generation or only development tooling.

Does itch.io’s “No AI” tag mean the game uses no procedural systems?

No. itch.io distinguishes generative AI from self-contained systems such as pathfinding, procedural level generation and dynamic difficulty. The tag addresses the creator’s generative-AI declaration, not every algorithm that changes game behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask an indie developer about an AI disclosure?

Ask which specific assets or features are affected, whether they are fixed before release or generated during play, and whether the statement applies to the current build. Request a dated answer if the game is still receiving updates.

How can I verify a GOG AI statement before buying?

Look for a current official GOG developer or support statement and compare it with the publisher’s own store description and patch notes. Because a public GOG disclosure rule was not verified here, do not copy Steam or itch.io terminology as proof of GOG’s requirements.
