Starship and NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) are not direct substitutes. SLS launches Orion and its crew toward the Moon; SpaceX’s Starship is a reusable transportation system in development, and its Starship Human Landing System (HLS) is a separate lunar-lander variant intended to transport astronauts between lunar orbit and the surface. In NASA’s Artemis architecture, those systems serve different legs of a mission.

What does each system do?

NASA’s SLS launches Orion toward the Moon

SLS is NASA’s heavy-lift rocket for sending Orion, crew and cargo on a trajectory toward lunar space. NASA describes this as a single-launch departure: SLS launches Orion directly toward the Moon, rather than first assembling a lunar mission from several Earth-orbit launches. SLS Block 1 flew the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022. NASA records Artemis II as launching four astronauts on April 1, 2026, for a lunar flyby and return. NASA’s post-flight review of Artemis I said SLS met or exceeded performance expectations.

Starship is a transportation system; Starship HLS is a lander

SpaceX describes Starship and its Super Heavy booster together as a fully reusable transportation system designed for crew and cargo missions to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. That is the company’s description of the system’s design and intended destinations, not proof of routine reuse or completed lunar transport.

Starship HLS is the lunar-landing variant NASA selected for Artemis work. It should not be treated as another name for the entire Starship launch system: the launch vehicle and the lunar lander have related hardware and operations, but different jobs in the mission.

How do their payload figures compare?

NASA publishes payload figures for specific SLS configurations and destinations. The reviewed SpaceX vehicle page does not provide a matching lunar payload figure for Starship, so the available numbers do not support a fair ranking of which vehicle “lifts more.” Earth-orbit capacity, payload sent toward the Moon, and payload delivered to a lunar surface are different measures.

Vehicle configuration Published payload figure What the figure means
SLS Block 1 More than 27 metric tons NASA figure for payload to the Moon; Block 1 flew Artemis I.
SLS Block 1B, crew configuration Approximately 38 metric tons NASA figure for deep space, including Orion and crew.
SLS Block 1B, cargo configuration Approximately 42 metric tons NASA figure for deep space in the cargo-only configuration.
Starship / Starship HLS No matching lunar payload figure stated on the reviewed SpaceX vehicle page SpaceX describes intended destinations, but this source does not establish a directly comparable lunar payload capacity.

The SLS figures are not interchangeable: they refer to different configurations, destinations and payload definitions. Block 1B adds the Exploration Upper Stage and Universal Stage Adapter for later missions. None of these deep-space figures should be compared as though they were equivalent to a low-Earth-orbit payload number.

How do they fit into an Artemis lunar mission?

  1. Launch: SLS sends Orion and its crew toward lunar space.
  2. Transfer to the lander: NASA’s architecture has astronauts transfer from Orion to a lander for the trip to and from the lunar surface.
  3. Surface operations: The lander, not Orion or SLS, performs the surface-landing role. NASA’s current HLS reference assigns SpaceX’s Starship HLS to Artemis III and IV, and Blue Origin’s lander to Artemis V.

The lunar Starship concept also requires substantial in-space operations. NASA’s Office of Inspector General describes a propellant depot and tanker flights as part of the HLS architecture. That means Starship’s ability to reach Earth orbit by itself would not establish readiness to carry out a lunar landing; the refueling and mission operations are part of the system being developed.

NASA’s 2026 Artemis III material describes an Earth-orbit rendezvous and lander-testing mission plan. Separately, NASA’s FY2027 budget request identifies SLS for Artemis III, IV and V and describes an intention to develop commercial transportation services through a competitive contract. The request is a dated planning document, not a guarantee that every mission will proceed on that schedule. NASA’s Inspector General has reported HLS development challenges that will delay planned Artemis launch dates, and the reviewed public information does not establish a final operational date for the full depot-and-tanker architecture.

Which system is reusable, and what has been demonstrated?

SpaceX describes both Starship and Super Heavy as designed to be fully reusable. That is an intended system characteristic. It should be distinguished from demonstrated routine reuse and from operational lunar transportation, neither of which is established by the company’s design description alone.

For SLS, NASA’s reviewed reference pages describe a launch vehicle used to send Orion toward the Moon; they do not describe a reusable SLS architecture. The strongest flight evidence in the supplied program references is SLS’s completed Artemis I flight and the subsequent Artemis II launch reported by NASA. A planned capability, a development milestone and a completed crewed or lunar mission are not the same level of evidence.

What do the cost and schedule claims actually establish?

No independently verified, directly comparable per-launch or per-kilogram cost for the two systems is established in the reviewed official material. SpaceX’s vehicle page lists a planned Starship lunar-cargo service beginning no earlier than 2028 at $100 million per metric ton. This is a company-published prospective service price, not an achieved operating price, independently validated cost estimate or comparison with SLS.

Schedules also need attribution and dates. NASA’s 2026 mission material and FY2027 budget request describe plans from different program documents, while the NASA Inspector General reports development challenges affecting planned HLS timing. Together, they do not establish a final date for the complete Starship HLS refueling and lunar-landing architecture. Treat program dates as plans that can change, not as completed milestones.

Which is better depends on the job

  • For launching Orion and crew toward lunar space: SLS is the vehicle NASA assigns that role in Artemis.
  • For the Artemis surface-landing role: Starship HLS is a lander in NASA’s current Artemis III and IV references; it is not a replacement for SLS.
  • For reusable transportation to a range of destinations: Starship is SpaceX’s stated design, but intended reuse and destinations should not be confused with routine operational capability.
  • For a payload-capacity or cost winner: the cited figures do not permit a like-for-like conclusion. Payload destination, vehicle configuration, payload definition and full mission architecture must match before the numbers can be ranked.

The useful comparison is therefore architectural: SLS/Orion provides a direct crewed departure toward lunar space, while Starship’s NASA role depends on a lander and a more involved in-space logistics chain. They are complementary parts of the stated Artemis approach, not two rockets competing to perform the same mission.
