STARSEEKER: Astroneer Expeditions is worth considering if you want a co-op space adventure built around short, timed missions rather than a permanent base-building sandbox. It entered Early Access on June 11, 2026 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The $29.99 US Steam edition already includes planetary exploration, gear progression, social-hub activities and higher-tier Voidbreak Offensives, but it is still an evolving product with mixed, changing user sentiment. It shares a universe with Astroneer, yet it is explicitly not Astroneer 2. Buy it for mission-based discovery and squad play; wait if you want a finished campaign, extensive construction systems or a proven content cadence.
What is STARSEEKER: Astroneer Expeditions?
STARSEEKER is an Early Access action-adventure game from System Era Softworks, published by Devolver Digital. You operate from the ESS Starseeker, a persistent station that serves as your preparation room, equipment locker and social space. From there, you launch timed Expeditions to planets, investigate alien life, gather resources, recover salvage, complete objectives and return with materials that improve your gear and loadouts.
The structure is deliberately run-based. A trip has a defined time window, so every landing asks you to balance curiosity against extraction: explore farther for better finds, or return before the clock and environmental dangers make the route back unsafe. The station then turns the results of that trip into progression, customization and your next deployment.
Steam lists the game as a $29.99 digital purchase in the United States. The listing includes online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, Steam achievements, Remote Play on TV and Family Sharing. Those features make STARSEEKER easy to approach as a group, while its solo options prevent the core mission structure from requiring a permanent team.

How does the Expedition loop work?
Expeditions are the central activity, and the game’s identity comes from their combination of freedom and pressure. You are not simply moving through a linear level; you are choosing routes and priorities on a planet while a timer limits how much you can accomplish.
1. Prepare at the ESS Starseeker
The station is where you plan an outing, improve equipment, adjust a loadout and customize your character. It is also a shared social hub: players can exchange items, contribute to community quests and spend time with other crew members before launching. Preparation matters because the same planet can demand different priorities depending on whether you are collecting resources, searching wreckage or pursuing a mission objective.
2. Launch a timed Expedition
Once deployed, you can roam freely within the available planet, investigate points of interest, gather resources and salvage, and study local flora and fauna. The official store description summarizes the goal as launching timed Expeditions to search for resources, gear and wildlife. The timer gives ordinary exploration a strategic edge: an optional detour can be valuable, but it can also consume the margin needed to reach extraction.
3. Complete missions and manage the return
Expeditions combine open-ended discovery with explicit tasks. You may pursue a mission marker, investigate a wreck or collect materials for a station upgrade. Because the trip is temporary, deciding when to stop is part of the game rather than an administrative chore. A disciplined squad can divide attention between objectives and salvage; a solo player has to perform that prioritization alone.
4. Return and convert discoveries into progression
Back aboard the station, recovered resources and gear feed into upgrades and future loadouts. The station is therefore more than a menu: it is the persistent layer that connects individual outings. Progression is expressed through better equipment, new customization choices and improved readiness for later Expeditions and Voidbreak missions.
What are Voidbreak Offensives?
Voidbreak Offensives are higher-tier missions that add a more structured challenge than a normal free-roaming Expedition. They can be launched with a premade squad, through matchmaking or alone, and each Offensive type has its own mechanics and enemy composition.
Why they change the pace
A standard Expedition emphasizes route choice and discovery. An Offensive narrows the focus toward coordinated objectives and combat or hazard mechanics that are specific to that activity. The result is a useful second layer: casual exploration when you want to roam, and a more deliberate mission when your group wants a defined challenge.

How to choose a group format
- Premade squad: Best when friends can assign roles, discuss routes and bring complementary equipment.
- Matchmaking: Useful when you want human teammates without arranging a session in advance. Coordination depends on the group you receive.
- Solo: Available for players who prefer self-reliance or cannot find a team. Expect to carry every objective and survival decision yourself.
Because the game does not make every Offensive identical, learning one type does not automatically prepare you for another. Treat each as a separate mission format and inspect its mechanics before committing your best gear.
What is Planet Tephra like?
Planet Tephra is the first documented world and is designed to make exploration feel varied rather than like a sequence of identical arenas. Its setting combines sprawling wetlands, dense jungles and broad oceans. Wreckage from an ill-fated EXO Dynamics voyage gives the environment a narrative thread and creates reasons to investigate areas beyond the safest route.
Tephra also contains dangerous creatures, hazardous plants and other unexplained forces. Those threats matter because the game’s timed structure turns environmental knowledge into an advantage. Recognizing a hazard before committing to a detour can save both equipment and the minutes needed for extraction. The available description does not establish the final size of the world or how many planets will ship after Early Access, so Tephra should be viewed as the current foundation rather than a promise of a fixed total.
How do co-op, cross-play and the station hub fit together?
STARSEEKER is built as a multiplayer voyage, but its systems are arranged so that cooperation is optional rather than mandatory for every activity. Online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer are listed features, allowing players on supported systems to form a squad even when they do not share hardware.

During an Expedition, cooperation can divide gathering, scouting and mission work; during a Voidbreak Offensive, coordination is more directly tied to the activity’s mechanics. Solo play remains available for Expeditions and Voidbreak Offensives, although a lone player has no partner to cover another route or revive a failed plan.
The listing also supports Remote Play on TV and Family Sharing on Steam. Those are platform conveniences rather than separate game modes: Remote Play streams the game from a compatible computer, while Family Sharing follows Steam’s account and library rules.
Is STARSEEKER Astroneer 2?
No. System Era explicitly describes STARSEEKER as not a direct sequel or “Astroneer 2.” It occupies the same universe but pursues a different design goal, with shorter, mission-based trips and a stronger focus on discovery and cooperative objectives.

| Comparison point | STARSEEKER: Astroneer Expeditions | Astroneer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary structure | Timed Expeditions and higher-tier Voidbreak Offensives | More open-ended play centered on base-building and creative tools |
| Main emphasis | Discovery, mission tasks and cooperative voyages | Construction, experimentation and creative sandbox play |
| Session shape | Shorter trips followed by station preparation and progression | Longer-term world development is the defining activity |
| Social layer | ESS Starseeker hub for planning, swapping items and community quests | Not characterized by the same station-based preparation loop in the supplied comparison |
| Relationship | Same universe, separate game and objectives | The earlier game whose universe STARSEEKER expands |
If what you enjoy most about Astroneer is shaping a permanent base and using creative tools, STARSEEKER may feel like a change of genre emphasis rather than a straight upgrade. If you prefer a clear mission, a limited window and a reason to regroup with friends afterward, its structure is intentionally different.

It is a reasonable Early Access purchase for players who value cooperative exploration and are comfortable with an unfinished roadmap. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting a complete, content-rich sequel at launch or a guarantee that every planned system is already present.
Reasons to buy now
- A distinct loop: Timed planetary trips followed by station-based upgrades give each session a clear beginning, middle and return phase.
- Flexible group play: Premade squads, matchmaking and solo options cover different ways of playing.
- Multiple activity types: Free-roaming Expeditions and structured Voidbreak Offensives provide different pacing.
- Cross-platform support: Friends do not have to own the same supported platform to play together.
- A meaningful setting: Tephra’s wetlands, jungles, oceans and wreckage create a strong first destination for discovery.
Reasons to wait
- Early Access uncertainty: The available feature set and stability can change as development continues.
- Mixed user sentiment: Steam captured 56% positive from 797 all-time reviews in one 2026 listing and 55% positive from 818 in a later capture. Those are rolling snapshots, not a permanent score.
- Limited evidence about the long-term roadmap: The documented material does not establish a final planet count, release cadence or completion date.
- Demanding PC baseline: The minimum graphics card and processor are substantially above entry-level hardware, and AVX2 support is required.
The practical decision is simple: buy for the current loop, not for an imagined future feature list. Early Access is least risky when you would be satisfied with the existing Expeditions, station systems and Offensives even if later additions arrive slowly.
What are the PC requirements?
Steam lists the following Windows specifications. Both tiers require DirectX 12, broadband internet, 10 GB of available storage and a processor with AVX2 support.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3800X | Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1070 Ti or AMD RX 5600 | NVIDIA RTX 3070 or AMD RX 6700 XT |
| API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 10 GB available | 10 GB available |
| Other | Broadband internet; AVX2 | Broadband internet; AVX2 |
The recommended list is not a performance guarantee. It is the configuration Steam identifies for a stronger experience, while actual frame rate and image quality can vary with resolution, drivers, background applications and future Early Access updates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can you check whether your PC is ready?
- Identify your processor: In Windows, open Settings, choose System, then About, and compare the CPU model with the listed Intel or AMD requirement.
- Check AVX2 support: The processor must support the AVX2 instruction set. If the CPU model is unclear, consult its manufacturer specifications; a modern 64-bit Windows installation alone does not prove AVX2 compatibility.
- Confirm memory: Open Settings > System > About and verify at least 8 GB. Sixteen gigabytes matches the recommended tier.
- Check the graphics card: Use Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or Task Manager’s Performance tab to identify the GPU, then compare it with the GTX 1070 Ti/RX 5600 minimum or RTX 3070/RX 6700 XT recommendation.
- Reserve storage: Keep at least 10 GB free on the installation drive. Leave additional room for patches and temporary files rather than filling the drive to its limit.
- Verify connectivity: Broadband internet is part of the listed requirement, particularly relevant to online co-op and cross-platform sessions.
If the CPU fails the AVX2 check, upgrading memory or lowering graphics settings will not solve the compatibility problem. A processor-platform upgrade is the relevant remedy, and the game should not be purchased on the assumption that a software tweak can add missing instruction support.

How should you interpret the Steam rating?
The two captured Steam snapshots show why a single percentage should not be treated as a final judgment. One 2026 listing recorded 56% positive from 797 all-time reviews; a later capture recorded 55% positive from 818. The additional reviews changed the proportion, demonstrating that the score is live and can move as patches, new content and player expectations change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor an Early Access game, read recent written reviews alongside the headline percentage. Look for comments about the current Expedition loop, matchmaking quality, technical stability and whether the present amount of content justifies the price. Older reviews may describe an earlier build, while a high-level score cannot tell you whether the criticism concerns missing content, bugs or a mismatch with the game’s mission-based design.
What are the main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Weaknesses and risks |
|---|---|
| Mission structure gives co-op sessions a clear purpose | Early Access means the final scope and cadence are uncertain |
| Expeditions support free roaming while retaining a timer | Players seeking a permanent construction sandbox may be disappointed |
| Voidbreak Offensives add distinct higher-tier challenges | Solo players must handle every objective and hazard themselves |
| Station hub combines progression, customization and social features | PC requirements are demanding, including AVX2 |
| Cross-platform multiplayer broadens the potential player pool | Steam reception is mixed and can change with each update |
Who should play STARSEEKER now?
Choose it now if your ideal session is a 30-to-structured-length cooperative outing: assemble a loadout, land on a dangerous world, decide which discoveries are worth the timer, complete an objective and return to improve the crew for the next run. It also suits players who enjoy learning several mission types rather than repeating one universal activity.
Wait for a later build if you need a finished narrative arc, a large established endgame or firm information about the eventual amount of content. Astroneer fans should especially decide based on whether they want discovery missions more than base construction. The shared universe may make STARSEEKER familiar, but the mission architecture is intentionally its own thing.
What should you know before starting your first Expedition?
- Use the station to adjust your loadout before every launch instead of treating equipment as a one-time choice.
- Set a return threshold before leaving the safe route; the timer is a resource just like supplies.
- On a team, assign who scouts, who handles mission objectives and who watches extraction timing.
- Try a normal Expedition before committing to a Voidbreak Offensive so you understand movement, hazards and the return process.
- When playing solo, favor reliable objectives and a safe exit over optional detours that can consume the entire time window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does STARSEEKER have a fixed campaign ending?
The documented Early Access description centers on repeatable Expeditions, station progression and Voidbreak Offensives rather than a stated campaign endpoint. No fixed number of story chapters or a completion date is established, so treat it as an evolving mission platform rather than a finished, linear campaign.
Will updates arrive at the same time on PC and consoles?
The game launched across PC and current-generation consoles, but no universal update schedule is published. Platform certification and storefront processes can produce different release timing, so check the announcement for your specific platform when a patch is expected.
Can I play with friends who use a different console?
Cross-platform multiplayer is listed as a feature, so supported PC and console players can form online squads. Each participant still needs the game on a supported platform and the relevant platform account or online service.
What should I do if the game will not start on my older CPU?
First verify that the processor supports AVX2; it is an explicit requirement, not an optional optimization. If AVX2 is absent, reinstalling drivers or adding RAM will not add the instruction set, so a compatible processor and motherboard platform are required.
