Spotify exceeded its Q3 2026 subscriber target and delivered broad-based financial growth. Premium Subscribers rose by 6 million to 306 million, one million above guidance, while total revenue reached €4.969 billion, up 16% year over year (14% in constant currency). Gross margin improved to 33.0%, operating income reached €672 million and free cash flow was €735 million. Premium remained the main growth and profit engine, while advertising continued its recovery and new audiobook, creator and personalization features widened Spotify’s offering.
Did Spotify beat subscriber estimates in Q3 2026?
Yes. Spotify finished the quarter with 306 million Premium Subscribers after adding 6 million net subscribers, beating its 305 million forecast by 1 million. Growth was reported in Latin America, Europe, North America and the rest of the world, supported by a global promotional campaign and partnership activity.
Monthly Active Users (MAUs) reached 788 million. Management said quarter-over-quarter gains occurred across all major regions, rather than being concentrated in one market. Co-CEO Alex Norström described the quarter as “a quarter where we did what we said.”
Why did Spotify revenue grow double digits?
Total Q3 revenue was €4.969 billion, a 16% year-over-year increase on a reported basis and 14% when currency movements are excluded. Premium revenue grew faster than the company total, while the smaller ad-supported business also expanded.

Premium growth reflects the larger subscriber base, pricing and average revenue per user, offset by the cost of licensed content. Spotify said Premium revenue growth outpaced content costs in the quarter. Constant-currency percentages are non-IFRS measures intended to show underlying growth without exchange-rate effects; they should not be mixed with reported figures as if they were the same measure.
Did Spotify become more profitable?
Profitability improved materially. Gross margin was 33.0%, 136 basis points above the prior year, and operating income was €672 million. Q3 free cash flow was €735 million.
Operating expenses rose 26% year over year to €967 million as marketing and cloud and AI spending were temporarily elevated. Social charges were €22 million, €13 million above forecast because of share-price movement. Those costs restrained operating leverage, but higher revenue and segment economics still produced a stronger operating result.

Did Spotify’s ad business recover?
Advertising recovered, but it remains much smaller and less profitable than Premium. Ad-supported revenue grew 10% on a reported basis and 9% in constant currency. Spotify cited continued scaling in automated advertising channels and growth in podcast sponsorship products.

The comparison shows why Premium currently carries the earnings story: it generated more than nine times the ad-supported revenue and had a substantially higher segment gross margin. Advertising’s improvement matters because it diversifies monetization, but its results remain more sensitive to campaign demand, measurement quality and podcast-cost structure.

How are creators being monetized?
Creator Memberships launched in 34 markets, allowing eligible podcast creators to sell recurring memberships that include exclusive content and experiences. Spotify’s Partner Program expanded to more than 35 additional markets, including Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Poland and Colombia. Norström said that expanding what is available on Spotify brings in new listeners and gives existing users more reasons to return frequently. Audiobooks, creator tools and personalization therefore serve both acquisition and engagement goals rather than representing a single new revenue line.

How should Q3 comparisons be read?
Spotify reclassified certain revenue-generating activities from ad-supported to Premium beginning January 1, 2026, and recast prior periods for the new presentation. Comparisons should therefore use the recast segment tables in the 2026 filings rather than combining older, unrecast segment figures with the new series. Reported revenue, constant-currency growth and free cash flow also use different definitions, so each figure needs its stated basis.

What is the difference between Spotify Premium Subscribers and MAUs?
Premium Subscribers are paying accounts, while MAUs include people using both the ad-supported and Premium services during a month. A rise in MAUs does not by itself show that the same number of users converted to paid plans.

Operating income is an accrual accounting measure, whereas free cash flow reflects cash collected and paid during the period after capital expenditures. Working-capital timing and non-cash expenses can make the two figures diverge in a single quarter.

Will the audiobook expansion change Spotify Premium pricing?
The Q3 announcement did not specify new Premium prices or a uniform audiobook bundle for all markets. Availability, catalog size and packaging can therefore differ by country as the rollout proceeds.
