Before accepting a sportsbook promotion, find out what balance the rollover applies to, calculate the amount you must wager, note the offer’s deadlines, and check which bets count. The promotion’s own terms—and the rules where you live—determine the details; a headline bonus or multiplier is not enough to judge an offer.

What to check before you opt in

  1. Find the rollover base and multiplier. Check whether the requirement applies to the bonus, your deposit, or the combined amount.
  2. Convert the requirement into a wagering amount. Multiply the specified base by the stated number of times.
  3. Record the relevant dates. Check when the promotion is active and expires, and whether its terms set separate acceptance, use, or wagering-completion deadlines.
  4. Identify qualifying bets. Read which events and wager types count, then check all restrictions that could affect a bet’s contribution.
  5. Read the remaining conditions. Check eligibility, redemption and withdrawal requirements, cancellation terms, and how the promotion treats your own funds.

These are not universal offer terms. For example, Ohio requires specified disclosures in promotion rules, but that state’s requirements do not establish the rules in other jurisdictions. Review the live terms for your account and location.

What rollover means—and how to calculate it

Rollover, also called a playthrough or wagering requirement, is the amount of betting the promotion’s terms require before promotional funds or winnings can be withdrawn. The key question is what amount the multiplier applies to: the bonus alone, your deposit alone, or a combination.

The Danish Gambling Authority illustrates the difference with a DKK 100 deposit, a DKK 100 bonus, and a 10-times requirement. These are the authority’s explanatory figures, not a standard for sportsbook offers generally:

Requirement applies to Calculation Amount to wager
Bonus only DKK 100 × 10 DKK 1,000
Deposit plus bonus (DKK 100 + DKK 100) × 10 DKK 2,000

The same multiplier can therefore require very different wagering amounts. Use the base named in the offer’s terms, rather than assuming that “10×” means the same thing across promotions. The Danish Gambling Authority’s bonus and playthrough guidance explains this calculation.

When the promotion expires

Check the promotion’s active period and expiration date, then determine what must happen by the deadline. A deadline to claim or use an offer may differ from a deadline to complete its wagering requirement, if the terms specify separate deadlines. Do not assume those distinctions exist in every offer: look for them in the promotion you are considering.

Ohio’s promotion rule requires timing—including when a promotion is active and when it expires—to be stated in the rules. It also requires disclosure of wagering and redemption requirements. That is an Ohio-specific regulatory example, not a rule that can be applied automatically elsewhere. See Ohio Administrative Code 3775-16-09.

Which bets are eligible?

“Eligible bets” are the events or wagers the promotion allows to count toward its requirement. There is no universal list of qualifying sports, markets, or bet types established by the Ohio rule; it requires the promotion’s rules to identify eligible events or wagers and applicable limitations.

Before placing a bet you expect to count, look for the offer-specific terms on:

  • Sport, event, and market or wager type
  • Any minimum odds requirement
  • Whether the full stake or another amount contributes
  • How voided, canceled, or unsettled bets are treated
  • Whether a cash stake, bonus stake, or both count

These are issues to check, not restrictions that every promotion necessarily imposes. The offer text controls. Ohio’s rule requires the relevant eligible wagers and limitations to be disclosed in the promotion rules; it does not make any particular limitation universal. The Ohio rule is a state-specific example.

Eligibility, withdrawals, cancellation, and “risk-free” wording

Rollover and deadlines are only part of the terms. Check who can claim the promotion, what conditions must be met to redeem or withdraw, whether the operator can cancel it, and what happens to your own deposited funds. Ohio’s rule lists these types of disclosures among the required promotion terms in that jurisdiction. Elsewhere, consult the applicable local rules and the actual offer terms.

“Free” or “risk-free” also has a specific meaning under Ohio’s rule: the patron must not have to incur a loss or risk their own money to use the free wager or withdraw winnings from it. That is an Ohio requirement; do not assume the same legal definition applies in another location. The Ohio Administrative Code states: “Promotions or bonuses described as free or risk-free must not require the patron to incur any loss or risk their own money to use or withdraw winnings from the free wager.”

How to compare two promotions

Compare like with like using the actual terms for your location and account. A larger advertised bonus may require more wagering or impose tighter limits, so assess the requirements together rather than ranking offers by headline value.

Comparison point What to record
Rollover Multiplier and whether it applies to the deposit, bonus, or both
Wagering amount Cash amount represented by the stated base and multiplier
Timing Active dates, expiration, and any stated completion deadline
Qualifying bets Eligible events, wager types, and other stated limits
Eligibility Who may claim and any account or other restrictions
Redemption and withdrawal Conditions to redeem the promotion or withdraw funds or winnings
Cancellation and own funds Cancellation terms and what happens to money you deposited

Jurisdiction matters

The worked arithmetic above comes from consumer guidance by the Danish Gambling Authority. The authority also describes Denmark-specific rules that cap a playthrough requirement at 10 times and require eligible games to contribute 100 percent toward the requirement. Those provisions are specific to Denmark; they should not be treated as rules for Ohio, the United States generally, or other countries. See the Danish authority’s guidance.

Likewise, Ohio Administrative Code 3775-16-09 is an Ohio source. Its promotion disclosures took effect October 26, 2024, according to the official code. For another jurisdiction, check the regulator and promotion terms that apply there. The UK Gambling Commission’s glossary of terms also describes possible promotion conditions, including time limits, qualification, maximum stake size, and wagering requirements; it is not a substitute for the rules governing your location or the offer you are reading.
