Choose Anarchy Battles if “competitive play” means fighting other players, improving at objective-based PvP, building rank or X Power, or preparing for organized four-versus-four matches. Choose Salmon Run if you mean coordinated competition: a crew of up to four players managing waves, quotas, weapon assignments, revives, Golden Eggs, and a score. Both modes have serious skill expression, but they measure different outcomes. Anarchy gives you the clearer PvP ladder; Salmon Run gives you the clearer cooperative score-attack format.
The right choice depends on the competition you want, not on a universal difficulty ranking. Nintendo documents formal tournaments for both modes, yet Anarchy results are match-based while Salmon Run results are based on Golden Eggs and scales.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salmon Run | Cooperative mastery, teamwork and score attacks | Up to four players; tournament score equals Golden Eggs collected plus scale points | Nintendo Switch | Oct 2026 |
| Anarchy Battles | Conventional competitive PvP and objective practice | Four rotating rules; an Anarchy Series ends at five wins or three losses | Nintendo Switch | Oct 2026 |
Which mode is better for competitive play?
Anarchy Battles are better for conventional competitive play. They put you against human opponents in objective-based matches, track match outcomes through rank and X Power systems, and resemble the format used by organized battle events. Salmon Run is the better answer when competition means optimizing a cooperative crew against PvE waves or entering a score-ranked event.

What do Anarchy Battles test?
Anarchy Battles test direct PvP decision-making: controlling an objective while reading enemy positions, adapting to opposing weapon choices and converting small advantages into match wins.
Four rotating objective rules
Nintendo Support lists four Anarchy rules: Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker and Clam Blitz. Each rule changes what your team must protect, when it should attack and how it should trade space. A player who is mechanically strong but ignores the active objective can still lose, so the mode rewards objective timing as much as aim and movement.
How Anarchy Series results are measured
In Anarchy Series, a run continues until a player or team reaches five wins or three losses, according to Nintendo’s instructions. That creates a clear win-loss target for a session: the result is not a Golden Egg total or a survival score, but whether the series reaches its win or loss threshold first.

Nintendo’s own description of the series emphasizes working with a random team to get multiple wins. That makes communication and adaptation important even when you are not entering a fixed tournament roster.
X Battles and visible competitive progression
Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 update history describes X Battles as competition for the highest X Power, with regional divisions, seasonal rankings and rank-based badges. The published ranking thresholds include the top 50,000, 30,000, 10,000, 5,000, 3,000, 1,000, 500 and top 10 positions. These markers give PvP-focused players a more explicit long-term ladder than a score-attack mode provides.
Why Anarchy maps more directly to organized battle play
Nintendo’s North American League rules use private battles, allow Turf War and Anarchy rules, alternate mode and stage selection, and run teams through structured brackets. That is the same basic competitive language as Anarchy: opposing teams, a selected rule, a stage, a match result and progression through a bracket.

What does Salmon Run test?
Salmon Run tests coordinated PvE execution. Players must manage waves of Salmonids, meet quotas, deliver Golden Eggs, use specials at the right time, recover downed teammates and adapt to the weapon set assigned for the shift.
Team size and cooperative structure
Nintendo describes Salmon Run as solo or two-to-four-player play against waves of Salmonids, with official gameplay material showing four players working together against dangerous and sometimes giant Salmonids. The opponent is not another human squad: it is the changing combination of ordinary Salmonids, boss threats and wave conditions.
The skills that decide a strong shift
- Threat priority: deciding which boss or lane can be ignored briefly and which one will collapse the team if left alive.
- Movement and spacing: keeping routes open so players can reach baskets, revive teammates and escape crowded areas.
- Ink and special management: spending limited resources before a wave becomes unrecoverable instead of saving everything for a perfect moment.
- Role coverage: using the assigned weapons for complementary jobs even when a player receives an unfamiliar kit.
- Recovery: reviving quickly and stabilizing the field after a mistake rather than treating one downed player as an automatic failure.
- Quota discipline: delivering enough Golden Eggs while leaving time and space to survive the rest of the wave.
Those are meaningful competitive skills, but there is no authoritative comparative study establishing that Salmon Run transfers more or less effectively to PvP than Anarchy does. Treat any claim that one mode universally creates better players as opinion, not as an established result.
How Salmon Run tournament scoring works
Nintendo’s Tournament Manager documentation supports score-ranking Salmon Run tournaments in which players compete to collect the most Golden Eggs and scales. The documented formula is Score = Golden Eggs collected + Scale points. Gold scales are worth 6 points, silver scales 5 points and bronze scales 4 points.
This scoring model changes the objective from “win a match against the other team” to “produce the best documented shift score.” A crew can therefore be highly competitive without ever directly attacking another team.

What is the difference between Salmon Run and Anarchy Battles?
The central difference is the opponent and the measurement of success. Salmon Run is cooperative PvE with a score ceiling; Anarchy is objective PvP with match outcomes and progression systems.

Is Salmon Run competitive?
Yes, but it is competitive in a different format from Anarchy. Nintendo explicitly supports Salmon Run tournaments with score rankings, divisions, shift-selection methods, penalties for failed shifts and tie-break procedures. The leaderboard is built around Golden Eggs and scales rather than wins over an opposing team.
That makes Salmon Run a good fit for crews that prefer optimization to direct conflict. You can compete against a target score, compare shift results or enter an event with formal rules while still cooperating with the people on your team.
Is Anarchy Battles basically ranked?
Anarchy is the closer match to what most players mean by ranked competitive play, although its rules and progression should be understood precisely. Nintendo documents Anarchy Series around a five-win or three-loss endpoint, while X Battles use X Power and seasonal or regional ranking information.
Recommended Free Tools
The mode is not a single permanent test of every Splatoon skill. Its four rules rotate, and each one rewards different decisions about space, timing and objective routes. A player improving seriously should judge progress by better objective decisions and repeatable match results, not by one favorable series.
Which mode should you choose for your goal?
Choose Anarchy Battles when you want PvP improvement
- You want to fight human opponents rather than computer-controlled waves.
- You want objective modes that resemble organized battle tournaments.
- You want rank, X Power, seasonal rankings or badges to document progress.
- You want practice reading enemy compositions, timing pushes and defending a lead.
Choose Salmon Run when you want cooperative competition
- You prefer working with friends or a crew over attacking another team.
- You want to improve communication, threat prioritization and recovery under pressure.
- You enjoy changing weapon assignments and adapting your plan each shift.
- You want a score-based event built around Golden Eggs and scales.
Play both for broader improvement
Playing both modes can develop a wider set of habits. Anarchy exposes you to direct opponent pressure and objective timing; Salmon Run emphasizes threat prioritization, movement discipline and communication. That is a gameplay-based recommendation, not the conclusion of a published skill-transfer study.
How do the official tournament formats differ?
The tournament tools show why neither mode should be dismissed as casual. They simply organize competition around different outputs.

Battle tournaments
Nintendo’s North American League rules describe private battles, Turf War and Anarchy rule options, alternating mode and stage choice, and structured brackets. Teams advance by defeating another team, so the format rewards matchup preparation, coordinated objective play and adaptation between rounds.
Salmon Run tournaments
Nintendo’s Tournament Manager documentation supports divisions, methods for selecting shifts, penalties when a shift fails and procedures for breaking ties. The score formula combines Golden Eggs with scale points, so event organizers can rank crews without turning Salmon Run into a direct player-versus-player mode.
How should a player practice in each mode?
Use a practice loop that matches the mode’s actual scoring system. Do not evaluate a Salmon Run session only by whether it felt hectic, and do not evaluate an Anarchy session only by personal splats.
Anarchy practice loop
- Name the active rule before the match starts. Identify whether the immediate job is holding a zone, moving the tower, carrying the Rainmaker or managing Clams.
- Track objective moments. After each push, note what created the opening and what stopped it: a missed rotation, poor spacing, a lost special or an unprotected objective.
- Review the loss condition. A defeat may come from one failed defense, repeated bad trades or giving up the objective while chasing eliminations. Separate those causes before changing your strategy.
- Repeat the same decision deliberately. Improvement is easier to see when you practice one behavior, such as arriving early to defense or waiting for a teammate before a push, rather than changing everything at once.
Salmon Run practice loop
- Assign responsibilities around the weapon set. Decide who can clear crowds, who can handle distant threats and who can safely carry eggs before the wave becomes crowded.
- Call the highest-risk threat first. A boss near the basket, a blocked route or a downed teammate may matter more than a distant target with a higher egg value.
- Protect the delivery route. Golden Eggs only help the score when someone can carry them safely to the basket, so clear space before greedily collecting more.
- Spend specials to preserve the shift. A special used to prevent a wipe can be more valuable than one held for a theoretically harder later wave.
- Record the result in the tournament’s terms. Track quotas, Golden Eggs and scales when score is the goal; a dramatic survival is not automatically a high-scoring run.
Which mode is better with friends?
Salmon Run is the more naturally cooperative choice because the team shares a PvE objective and can build a communication routine without directly trying to defeat another friend group. Anarchy is better when your group wants structured rivalry, private battle practice or the pressure of matching against another coordinated squad.
Groups can also alternate them: use Salmon Run to practice callouts, positioning and recovery, then use Anarchy to apply communication while an opposing team actively disrupts your plan. Keep the success criteria separate so a good cooperative shift is not judged by PvP standards.

There is no authoritative comparison in the available Nintendo documentation that ranks Salmon Run and Anarchy on a single difficulty scale. They stress different failure modes: Anarchy punishes losing space and objective timing against human opponents, while Salmon Run punishes poor threat management, unsafe routes and team collapse during waves.

Choose the mode whose pressure you want to learn. Players who dislike direct confrontation may still find high-level Salmon Run demanding, and players comfortable with PvE may find Anarchy’s adaptation to human opponents more difficult.
What do you need to play online?
Splatoon 3 is a Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo states that online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. That requirement applies to online use of modes such as Anarchy Battles and Salmon Run; the exact membership terms and availability can change, so check Nintendo’s current service information before subscribing.
The relevant product for this decision is the Splatoon 3 Nintendo Switch game itself. Salmon Run and Anarchy Battles are modes inside that game, not separate purchases.
How we picked the recommendation
The recommendation follows the modes’ documented objectives and competitive systems: Anarchy uses human-versus-human rule sets, series wins and losses, X Power and organized battle brackets; Salmon Run uses cooperative waves, Golden Egg and scale scoring, and score-ranked tournament tools. No population, matchmaking or skill-transfer claim was used because no authoritative comparative study establishes one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the X Battle ranking thresholds in Splatoon 3?
Nintendo’s update history lists ranking markers for the top 50,000, 30,000, 10,000, 5,000, 3,000, 1,000, 500 and top 10 positions. These thresholds are ranking bands, not a promise that every region or season will contain the same number of active competitors.
Can Salmon Run events use formal tie-breaks?
Yes. Nintendo’s Tournament Manager documentation includes tie-break procedures alongside divisions, shift-selection methods and penalties for failed shifts. The event organizer’s published rules determine how those procedures are applied.
Does Salmon Run support solo play as well as groups?
Nintendo describes Salmon Run as available solo or with two to four players. A solo session therefore uses the mode’s cooperative structure without requiring you to assemble a full four-person party.
Are Anarchy and Salmon Run measuring the same kind of win?
No. Anarchy’s result is determined by opposing teams and series outcomes, while Salmon Run tournament scoring adds Golden Eggs to points from scales. A high Salmon Run score is not equivalent to an Anarchy win.
