eARC is the HDMI connection that returns high-quality TV audio to a soundbar. When both the television and soundbar support eARC, the link can carry uncompressed multichannel audio and high-bitrate formats such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dialogue enhancement can make speech clearer by emphasizing the center channel or speech frequencies, while Movie, Surround and 3D modes change how the soundbar processes the mix rather than adding speakers that are not physically present.
This guide explains which connection and settings to use, why movie voices can sound quiet, what cable is appropriate, and how to choose between faithful, immersive and late-night playback.
What is eARC on a soundbar?
Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) sends audio from a television to a soundbar through an HDMI cable. It is an improved version of the older ARC standard and provides substantially more bandwidth for lossless and uncompressed surround formats.
Recommended Free Tools
Sony documentation lists eARC bandwidth of up to 37 Mbps and support for uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 audio, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. Samsung describes the connection as a way to send TV audio through one HDMI cable while preserving the source’s original resolution. Those capabilities apply only when both the TV and soundbar have eARC; if either device supports ARC only, the connection is limited to ARC-compatible formats.

What eARC changes compared with ARC
| Feature | ARC | eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | HDMI return channel from TV to soundbar | HDMI return channel from TV to soundbar |
| Bandwidth | Lower; limits some high-bitrate formats | Up to 37 Mbps according to Sony’s 2026 documentation |
| Typical format ceiling | Compressed surround and formats supported by the specific TV | Uncompressed 5.1/7.1 and high-bitrate Dolby and DTS formats, when the devices and source support them |
| Atmos from TV apps | May be unavailable or restricted by the TV | Can pass Atmos from compatible TV content |
The format is also limited by the source. A television, streaming app or disc player must actually provide the Dolby or DTS signal; eARC cannot turn stereo content into lossless Atmos.
Do I need eARC for Dolby Atmos?
You need eARC when Atmos must travel from the TV to the soundbar in a high-bitrate or lossless form. You do not always need it for every Atmos setup: a source connected directly to an Atmos-capable soundbar input may avoid the TV’s ARC limitation, and some services deliver compressed Atmos that can work over ordinary ARC if the TV supports that path.
When the TV is the source
If you watch Atmos content in a built-in TV app, the TV has to return that audio to the soundbar. Sony’s Atmos guidance says an eARC TV-to-soundbar connection can play Atmos from TV content, while a non-eARC television cannot pass Atmos directly from the TV. Check the television’s audio-output specifications rather than assuming that an “Atmos” label on the app guarantees an Atmos signal at the bar.

With a Blu-ray player, game console or streaming box, connect the source to the soundbar’s HDMI input when the TV lacks eARC and the soundbar accepts the required format. The soundbar then sends video to the TV. This arrangement can preserve formats that the TV cannot return over ARC, but it uses an HDMI input and requires the soundbar to support the source’s video standards as well as its audio format.
How do I connect and configure eARC?
Use the following sequence so the HDMI link negotiates the highest format supported by both devices.

- Identify the ports. Plug the cable into the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC) and the television port labeled HDMI eARC/ARC. A regular HDMI input on either device will not provide the return channel.
- Use a suitable cable. Choose a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Sony warns that an unsuitable cable can restrict high-quality formats; replacing an old or damaged cable is a sensible first diagnostic step.
- Enable the return channel. In the TV’s sound settings, turn on eARC or set it to Auto. Enable eARC or the equivalent HDMI-control setting on the soundbar. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Select the correct TV output. Set audio output to HDMI receiver, eARC/ARC or the television’s equivalent—not TV speakers or optical output.
- Choose a digital format. Use Passthrough, Bitstream or Auto when you want the TV to forward Dolby and DTS data. A PCM-only setting can convert the signal to stereo or restrict channels.
- Connect external sources. Attach a Blu-ray player or streaming box to the TV or soundbar according to the format path you chose. If the TV is non-eARC and the source requires a format the TV cannot pass, use a compatible soundbar HDMI input.
- Verify the result. Play known compatible content and check the soundbar display or companion app. It should identify the incoming Dolby or DTS format instead of merely showing “PCM” or “Stereo.”
HDMI-CEC usually needs to be enabled for dependable power and input switching, although the label varies by television. If the soundbar repeatedly loses audio after changing inputs, power-cycle both devices, then reconnect the HDMI cable and recheck the output settings.
What HDMI cable do I need for eARC?
A High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is the safest documented choice for eARC and Atmos connections. The cable does not create eARC support—the TV and soundbar still need the feature—but an unsuitable cable can prevent the link from carrying high-quality formats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Use the cable between the two ports specifically labeled eARC/ARC.
- Keep the run as short as practical and avoid adapters, switches or couplers while troubleshooting.
- If the soundbar reports stereo, PCM or intermittent dropouts, test another certified High-Speed cable with Ethernet before changing advanced audio settings.
- Do not buy a cable solely because its package says “Atmos”; Atmos capability comes from the complete source, TV, soundbar and connection path.
Why is movie dialogue so quiet?
Films commonly place speech in a center channel while music, ambience and effects occupy a much wider range. At a low listening level—or in a room with reflections—the center information can seem buried even though the mix is working normally.
Which setting should I try first?
- Enable the soundbar’s Dialogue, Voice Enhance, Voice Zoom or similarly named feature.
- Raise the center-channel level slightly if the model provides that control. Samsung-supported models, for example, offer center adjustment from -6 dB to +6 dB.
- Listen again at your normal volume with a familiar scene.
- Back the setting down if voices become thin, harsh or detached from the soundtrack.
These controls are model-specific processing, not a repair for a damaged speaker or an incorrectly configured source. Sony offers Voice Zoom and dialogue-enhancer controls whose availability depends on the selected processing mode. Amazon’s Fire TV Soundbar Plus provides a Dialogue Enhancer and separate Movie, Music and Dialogue equalizer modes. Bose describes an AI Dialogue Mode that distinguishes speech from other sounds in the same frequency range and can be switched off for the original presentation.
What if dialogue is still unclear?
- Confirm that the soundbar is receiving multichannel audio rather than an unexpected stereo or downmixed signal.
- Make sure a night or volume-leveling mode has not altered the balance in an undesirable way.
- Check speaker placement: a bar blocked by a cabinet edge or mounted far below the screen can make the center image less direct.
- Test another title. Some mixes intentionally place speech at a lower level, and a setting that helps one film may sound unnatural on another.
Should I use Movie, Surround or Dialogue mode?
Start with Standard or the least processed Movie profile for a faithful presentation, then add dialogue enhancement or Surround only when you prefer the result. The names describe processing choices, not a guarantee of extra channels.

Movie mode
Movie mode normally applies a film-oriented equalization curve and surround processing. It may increase bass, widen effects or alter dynamics. Compare it with Standard using a scene you know; the more dramatic option is not automatically the more accurate one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Dialogue mode
Dialogue mode prioritizes speech frequencies or increases center-channel output. It is useful for quiet voices, television drama and news, but can make music and effects sound less full. On some models it cannot run simultaneously with another post-processing mode.
Surround or 3D mode
Surround and 3D modes widen or virtualize the sound field. They can make a two-channel or soundbar-only system feel more spacious, but they cannot create discrete rear or height channels that the hardware and source do not provide. A soundbar with physical rear speakers will have more real channel separation than a bar using virtualization alone.
Night and dynamic-range modes
Dynamic-range compression, night mode or volume leveling reduces the difference between whispers and explosions. That helps in apartments or late-night viewing, but it also reduces theatrical impact. Use it when controlling peaks matters more than maximum dynamics, and disable it when you want the mix’s full contrast.
How can I troubleshoot missing Atmos or surround sound?
Work from the signal path outward; changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.

- Check hardware support. Verify that both the TV and soundbar support eARC for the format you want. If one supports ARC only, use a direct source-to-soundbar connection where possible.
- Check the port and cable. Confirm that both ends are in the labeled eARC/ARC ports and test a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.
- Check the TV output mode. Set the output to eARC/HDMI receiver and use Auto, Bitstream or Passthrough instead of PCM when the source supplies Dolby or DTS.
- Check the source title and app. Use a known compatible Atmos or DTS title and confirm that your subscription tier, player and region actually provide that soundtrack.
- Check the soundbar indicator. If it shows Dolby or DTS, the format is arriving; a “3D” or “Surround” label may only indicate virtualization.
- Bypass the TV if necessary. Connect the player directly to a compatible soundbar HDMI input when the television cannot pass the required format.
What should I compare when buying an eARC soundbar?
Prioritize the connection and controls that match your sources, room and listening habits rather than relying on a single Atmos badge.
| Specification | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| eARC versus ARC | Determines the available return bandwidth and TV-app formats | Do both the TV and bar support eARC? |
| Dolby/DTS support | Controls which soundtracks can be decoded | Are Dolby TrueHD, Atmos, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio listed? |
| Dialogue controls | Helps speech remain intelligible at ordinary volume | Is there a named dialogue mode, Voice Zoom or adjustable center level? |
| Surround implementation | Separates virtual width from discrete speaker channels | Are rear or height speakers included, optional or simulated? |
| HDMI inputs | Allows direct connection when the TV cannot pass a format | Are there enough inputs for your player, console and streaming box? |
| Night or dynamic-range controls | Reduces loudness jumps for shared walls or late viewing | Can compression be enabled without permanently changing movie mode? |
Also confirm whether a feature works at the same time as another. Some dialogue controls are disabled by particular surround or post-processing profiles, and the available adjustments differ by model and firmware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can eARC improve sound from every source?
No. eARC is a transport path, not an audio upgrade applied to all content. It preserves a source signal that the TV and soundbar both understand; stereo television, a compressed stream or a title mastered with restrained dialogue remains that way after passing through eARC.
Likewise, a virtual Surround mode can change the perceived width of stereo audio but cannot recover channel information that was never recorded. Treat eARC, dialogue processing and surround virtualization as separate decisions: first deliver the correct signal, then choose how much the soundbar should alter it.
What is the best starting setup for movie nights?
Connect eARC with a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet, set the TV to Auto or Passthrough, and begin with Standard or the least processed Movie profile. Verify the incoming format on the soundbar, then add a small amount of dialogue enhancement if speech is hard to follow. Use Surround or 3D when you prefer a wider presentation, and reserve night mode for situations where volume jumps are a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an optical cable carry eARC or Dolby Atmos?
No. Optical audio has no HDMI return channel and cannot provide eARC. It may carry basic stereo or compressed surround, depending on the equipment, but use the HDMI eARC/ARC ports for the formats discussed here.
Why does my soundbar show PCM instead of Dolby Atmos?
The TV or source may be outputting PCM, the app may not be supplying Atmos, or the television may be unable to pass the format over its ARC connection. Set the source path to Auto, Bitstream or Passthrough and test a direct source-to-soundbar connection if the TV lacks eARC.
Can a soundbar create real rear speakers with a 3D mode?
No. A 3D or Surround mode can psychoacoustically widen sound, but discrete rear channels require separate rear speakers and a compatible multichannel source. Virtualization can still be useful when you want a larger apparent sound field without adding speakers.
Does raising the center channel damage the soundtrack?
A modest adjustment does not damage the source; it changes the playback balance. Excessive gain can make speech nasal or disconnected, so return toward the default when voices overpower music and effects.
