Yes—if you have a large room, several available power outlets and a premium budget. The Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 + Rear 9 is a 5.1.4-channel wireless home-theater system built around three front speakers, two physical rear speakers and Sony’s unusually large Sub 9. It delivers a genuinely cinematic presentation, smooth movement of effects around the room and forceful, well-integrated bass. It is not an easy recommendation for a compact room, a primarily two-channel music listener or anyone seeking the best performance per dollar.

Buy it for scale, a dedicated center channel, physical rear effects and Sony television integration. Compare the Samsung HW-Q990H if broad value and independently tested performance matter most, or Sony’s BRAVIA Theater Quad if a wider, smoother soundstage is more important than a separate center speaker.

What exactly is included in the Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 and Rear 9?

The package combines Sony’s three-speaker BRAVIA Theater Trio front system with one BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 and a pair of BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 speakers. The resulting layout is 5.1.4 channels: left, center and right speakers at the front; a subwoofer for the low-frequency channel; two physical surround speakers; and four height channels created by up-firing drivers and processing.

The Trio’s center speaker is a narrow, low-profile unit intended to sit beneath a television, while the larger cylindrical left and right speakers also fire sound upward. The Rear 9 speakers provide real room-level surround channels rather than relying solely on virtualized effects. Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping can add phantom speaker positions between the physical units.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

With the rear speakers and subwoofer installed, the system is reported as IMAX Enhanced certified. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, so it can handle the major object-based home-cinema formats used by streaming services, game consoles and disc players.

How much amplification does it claim?

What Hi-Fi lists 405 W for the Trio, 180 W for the Rear 9 pair and 600 W for the Sub 9, or 1,185 W claimed total system power. Those are Sony-style manufacturer claims reported in a 2026 review, not independent laboratory power measurements; they should not be compared directly with measured continuous output from an AV receiver.

Will the system fit my room and furniture?

The front speakers and Rear 9 units are relatively flexible, but the Sub 9 determines whether this package is practical. It measures about 40 × 39 × 35 cm (What Hi-Fi also describes it as approximately 39 × 40 × 35 cm) and weighs 23 kg. That is a near-cube-sized subwoofer that needs stable floor space, not a small box that can casually disappear behind a sofa.

Plan for the subwoofer first

  • Measure a clear floor location roughly 40 cm in each direction, then allow additional breathing room and access to the power cable.
  • Use a solid floor or furniture rated for at least 23 kg; do not place it on a lightweight shelf or an unstable media unit.
  • Leave a route for the mains lead. Every speaker communicates wirelessly with the others, but every speaker still needs its own mains connection.
  • Expect two-person handling when moving the Sub 9, especially on stairs or around a television cabinet.

Where can the speakers go?

Place the Trio’s center directly below or above the screen, with its spacer feet used where a television pedestal needs extra clearance. Keep the left and right cylinders at the same distance from the main seat and avoid blocking their upward-firing drivers. Position the Rear 9 speakers behind or beside the seating area at roughly ear height, angled toward listeners. Sony provides wall-mounting options for the front left/right speakers and Rear 9s when you use brackets and fixings rated for their weight and wall type.

A large open-plan room can dilute bass and make the height effects less obvious; a smaller room may make the Sub 9’s low-frequency output dominant. The system is most convincing when the front, rear and ceiling-reflection paths are not obstructed by tall furniture or a very low ceiling.

How do I install and calibrate the package?

Installation is wireless between speakers but not cable-free. Use this order to avoid placing the subwoofer and surrounds before the main connection is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the television and console. Confirm that the TV has an HDMI eARC port. If a console or player uses 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate or auto low-latency mode, plan to connect it to the Trio’s HDMI input or verify that your television passes those signals correctly.
  2. Place the front speakers. Put the center under the screen, then set the left and right speakers symmetrically. Keep their up-firing surfaces clear.
  3. Place the Sub 9 and Rear 9s. Give the subwoofer a stable floor position and put the rears behind or beside the listening seats. Wall-mount only with hardware suitable for the speaker and the wall.
  4. Connect mains power. Provide an outlet for the Trio, each Rear 9 and the Sub 9. The wireless link does not eliminate these power requirements.
  5. Connect the TV. Run HDMI from the Trio’s eARC connection to the television’s HDMI eARC socket. Select eARC/bitstream output in the TV audio menu so Atmos or DTS:X can reach the system when supported.
  6. Add sources. Use the Trio’s HDMI input for a console or player that needs 4K/120 Hz, VRR or ALLM. For additional sources, check whether the television can pass their audio format over eARC.
  7. Open the BRAVIA Connect app. The app is the primary way to view operating status and detected formats because the system has no traditional front display. Follow its pairing and speaker-setup prompts.
  8. Run the room-mapping process. Enable Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping and complete the positioning routine from the main seat. This creates phantom speakers around the room and is most reliable when the physical speakers are placed symmetrically.
  9. Listen with more than one setting. Compare Sound Field and Movie theater acoustics modes using familiar dialogue, effects and music. The balance can change substantially between settings, so do not judge the system from the first preset you hear.

Keep the television, console and Trio firmware current. HDMI handshakes and format behavior can change with firmware and regional software, so record which input and audio setting worked before rearranging the system.

Which connections and audio formats are supported?

The published specification is designed for a current TV-and-console system rather than a large collection of wired sources.

  • HDMI eARC: the television connection for lossless and object-based TV audio when the TV supports it.
  • One HDMI input: supports 4K/120 Hz, variable refresh rate and auto low-latency mode, useful for a current game console.
  • Wireless networking: Wi-Fi is included for network features and updates.
  • Bluetooth: available for direct playback from compatible devices.
  • Network streaming: Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect are listed.
  • Formats: Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are supported, with IMAX Enhanced certification reported for the expanded system.

There is no voice-control function listed in the published specification. There is also no conventional front display: status lights and the BRAVIA Connect app report connection and format information. That keeps the design clean but makes it less convenient to confirm reception of Atmos from the sofa.

Before purchase, check the exact model numbers and firmware of your television, console and disc player. A source may support 4K/120 Hz video but still require the television to pass its audio correctly over eARC, and regional firmware can alter HDMI behavior.

How good is the surround and Atmos performance?

The complete system’s strongest quality is scale. What Hi-Fi describes it as a convenient wireless surround package that still provides proper surround sound, with the up-firing drivers making it Dolby Atmos-ready. In its 2026 listening report, the publication wrote: “Effects move seamlessly from front to rear, while the system maintains the same sense of cohesion that impressed us with the Trio on its own.”

Front-to-rear movement

Because the Rear 9 speakers are physical units rather than simulated rear channels, pans across the room have a clearer starting point and arrival point. Aircraft, vehicles, weather and musical ambience can move from the screen to the sides and behind the seats without the tonal break that often occurs when a front bar virtualizes all surround information.

Height effects

The up-firing drivers and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping processing can create a convincing sense of sound above the listening position when the ceiling is suitable and the speakers are placed correctly. Reflections are inherently room-dependent: an unusually high, absorbent or irregular ceiling will reduce the impression of overhead movement. The system should therefore be treated as Atmos-capable, not as a guarantee of identical height effects in every room.

Dialogue and the center channel

The dedicated center speaker anchors voices to the screen and gives dialogue a stable location even when effects are active. Sony’s Voice Zoom 3 integration can be especially useful to owners of compatible BRAVIA televisions, although the exact controls depend on the TV model and software. A separate center does not make every mix perfectly intelligible; heavily compressed broadcasts and poorly mixed streams can still sound congested.

How does the Sub 9 handle bass?

The Sub 9 is described as brilliantly integrated: it can deliver enormous weight when a soundtrack demands it while remaining controlled and tuneful when the mix is restrained. That combination gives explosions, engines and musical low notes physical impact without requiring a wired subwoofer run across the room.

There is a trade-off. RTINGS reports that the Sub 9 can produce enough rumble and thump to overwhelm the mid-range with some material. If voices become recessed, move the subwoofer away from a corner, reduce the bass level in the app or try a different sound-field setting before assuming the hardware is defective. Room modes can make one seat boomy while another sounds balanced.

Is it good for music and stereo listening?

Music is the package’s weaker use case. RTINGS reports messy or congested stereo tracking, while What Hi-Fi’s praise is centered on cinematic scale and surround cohesion. Two-channel recordings can therefore sound less precise than they would through a well-positioned stereo system, particularly when instruments occupy the center of the image.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Large footprint: the 23 kg, near-cube Sub 9 can dominate a small living room and is difficult to move alone.
  • Many outlets: every wireless speaker still needs mains power, so a wall-mounted installation may require several accessible sockets.
  • No front display: the app and status lights replace an at-a-glance format readout.
  • Variable stereo imaging: congested tracking is more noticeable with music than with film soundtracks.
  • Potential bass masking: the Sub 9’s output can cover mid-range detail in some rooms or mixes.
  • Premium cost: the launch prices place the full package well above mainstream soundbars, even before mounts, furniture or extra HDMI cables.

How does it compare with the main alternatives?

The right choice depends on which compromise you can accept rather than on a single specification.

Samsung HW-Q990H

RTINGS positions the HW-Q990H as the better choice for most people’s soundbar needs on broad objective testing, sound-enhancement options and performance across many tests. Choose it when value and a wide feature set outweigh Sony-specific television integration. The Sony package remains attractive if you need HDMI passthrough, DTS support for older physical-media equipment, a dedicated center speaker or BRAVIA Connect and Voice Zoom 3 features.

Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad

The Theater Quad is the closer in-family alternative. RTINGS describes it as capable of a smoother, wider soundstage than the Trio-based package. Choose the Quad when expansive imaging matters more than having a separate center channel; choose the Trio, Sub 9 and Rear 9 when anchored dialogue, a conventional front stage and powerful bass are higher priorities.

LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro

RTINGS identifies the LG system’s 9.1.6 layout and more granular controls as advantages. It may suit a buyer who wants extensive adjustment options and more nominal channels. Sony is the more logical pick when HDMI passthrough, DTS compatibility or integration with a BRAVIA television is the deciding factor.

Can I add or reuse Sony speakers later?

Yes, but compatibility is model-specific. Sony’s SA-SW9 compatibility list includes BRAVIA Theater Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, Quad and several HT-A models. Sony’s SA-RS9 list includes Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

That makes the Sub 9 and Rear 9 sensible upgrades for owners of those systems, but it does not mean every Sony soundbar can pair with them. Confirm the exact model number in Sony’s current compatibility documentation before buying a single speaker, and do not assume that a previous-generation wireless protocol will pair automatically.

What accessories and preparation are actually necessary?

  • A certified HDMI cable rated for the bandwidth required by 4K/120 Hz, VRR and ALLM.
  • Wall-mount brackets and fixings whose load rating, screw pattern and wall type match the front speakers and Rear 9s.
  • A stable floor position or furniture capable of supporting the 23 kg Sub 9.
  • Enough mains sockets near the television and rear seating positions.
  • A tape measure and a second person to position the Sub 9 safely.

Do not buy a mount based only on a product photo. Verify dimensions, load rating and compatibility with the exact speaker revision, especially when mounting into plasterboard or masonry.

What should I check before buying?

  1. Measure the room. Mark the Sub 9’s footprint and the rear-speaker positions with tape.
  2. Count outlets. Include the Trio, both rears and the subwoofer, not just the television.
  3. Confirm TV connectivity. Look for HDMI eARC and verify that the television can pass your preferred audio formats.
  4. List your sources. A console needing 4K/120 Hz may use the Trio’s HDMI input; a disc player may need DTS support and correct eARC passthrough.
  5. Consider your listening split. Film-heavy households will benefit more than listeners who mostly play stereo music.
  6. Check current regional pricing. The published figures are launch prices and can differ from current bundles, taxes and promotions.
  7. Plan the setup time. Budget time to position the speakers, run 360 Spatial Sound Mapping and compare sound-field settings.

What is the final verdict?

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Trio with Sub 9 + Rear 9 is worth buying when you want a premium, modular wireless theater and can give it the room and power infrastructure it needs. Its physical rear speakers, dedicated center, convincing effect movement and deep Sub 9 bass create a much larger presentation than a front-only bar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a poor fit for a compact installation, a buyer who dislikes app-based status checks or someone who primarily evaluates speakers with stereo music. For those readers, compare the Samsung HW-Q990H for broad value and test performance, or the BRAVIA Theater Quad for a smoother, wider soundstage. Whichever route you choose, verify local price, stock, TV compatibility and firmware behavior before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Sub 9 be hidden inside a cabinet?

Its near-cube dimensions and 23 kg weight make enclosed-cabinet placement impractical. A cabinet can also exaggerate resonances and restrict the low-frequency output, so an open, stable floor position is the safer choice.

Will the system work if my TV has only HDMI ARC?

Basic TV audio may work over ordinary ARC, but the published design targets HDMI eARC for the broadest high-quality and object-based audio support. Check your television’s format passthrough limits before relying on ARC alone.

Does the app replace a physical remote display?

The system has no traditional front display, so the BRAVIA Connect app and status lights provide the operating and format information. Keep a phone or tablet available during setup if you regularly need to confirm the incoming signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Rear 9 pair useful for gaming as well as films?

Yes. Physical rear speakers can make positional cues and movement more distinct in games, provided the console and television pass the intended surround format. The benefit depends on the game mix and the accuracy of your speaker placement.
