Yes, the Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS is worth its premium price for photographers who need a fast 400mm prime that can realistically be carried and hand-held for long wildlife or sports sessions. At 994 g (without its tripod foot), it is unusually light for this focal length and aperture, while still offering Optical SteadyShot, XD Linear Motor autofocus, weather resistance and compatibility with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. The trade-offs are equally clear: the focal length is fixed, the $2,699.99 US MSRP is substantial, and the lens is specialized rather than a general-purpose zoom replacement.

This review explains what that 994 g figure means in practice, how the lens performs according to published hands-on testing, and when a 400mm F4.5 makes more sense than a 600mm F6.3 alternative.

What is the Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS?

The Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS (SEL400F45GM) is a full-frame Sony E-mount G Master prime lens. Its focal length is fixed at 400 mm and its maximum aperture is F4.5. Sony positions it for wildlife, birding, sports, trainspotting and other subjects that remain too far away for ordinary telephoto lenses.

The central design idea is portability without giving up a relatively bright aperture. A 400mm F4.5 lens normally implies a large, tripod-oriented optic; this one weighs 994 g and measures 242 mm long, making it plausible to carry on a hike or hold at eye level while waiting for an unpredictable subject.

How much does the Sony 400mm F4.5 weigh and how compact is it?

The lens weighs 994 g (35.1 oz.) without its tripod foot. Sony lists a maximum diameter of 108 mm and a length of 242 mm. Those dimensions are the reason the lens is practical for handheld use: the mass is substantial, but it is far below the weight normally associated with professional 400mm primes.

Balance matters as much as the number on the scale

Sony says the center of gravity is positioned closer to the camera body and tripod mount. That layout is intended to make it easier to hold a framing, follow an erratic subject and pan smoothly. In practice, balance can be more important than a small difference in total weight because a front-heavy lens quickly fatigues the supporting arm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 994 g specification excludes the tripod foot, so the complete shooting weight will be higher once you add a camera body, battery, card, strap or harness and any teleconverter. Even so, the lens remains in a class where many photographers can carry it for an extended walk rather than treating it as equipment that must stay on a tripod.

Protection for outdoor work

Sony specifies dust and moisture resistance. That is useful for wet fields, coastal air, dust at a sports venue and changing weather, but it is not a license to expose the lens deliberately to heavy rain or immerse it. Keep the mount, switches and camera-body interface protected when conditions become severe.

What are the Sony 400mm F4.5’s key specifications?

The published specifications define both its strengths and its limits. The lens is fast and relatively close-focusing for a 400mm prime, but it is still a fixed-focal-length tool that requires you to manage subject distance and framing yourself.

Specification Published value What it means in use
Mount and format Full-frame Sony E-mount Designed for Sony mirrorless bodies; crop-sensor bodies produce a narrower field of view.
Focal length 400 mm Long reach for birds, field sports and distant subjects, with no ability to zoom wider.
Maximum aperture F4.5 Allows faster shutter speeds and lower ISO than a slower 400mm lens in the same light.
Optical construction 16 groups, 22 elements A complex prime design intended to control aberrations at long focal length.
Minimum focus distance 2.5 m Close enough for relatively tight framing of larger subjects, although it is not a macro lens.
Maximum magnification 0.18x Useful for larger details, but small subjects will not fill the frame at close range as they would with a macro lens.
Diaphragm 11 blades Supports rounded out-of-focus highlights when stopped down.
Filter diameter 95 mm Requires large, correspondingly expensive filters or a compatible filter holder.
Length 242 mm Long but manageable in a backpack designed for telephoto lenses.
Maximum diameter 108 mm Plan for a wide lens compartment and a substantial front element.
Weight 994 g (35.1 oz.), without tripod foot The headline portability advantage, before adding the camera and accessories.

How fast and reliable is the autofocus?

The lens uses XD Linear Motors, which Sony describes as fast, precise and quiet. That motor design suits subjects whose distance changes quickly, including birds in flight, running athletes and vehicles moving across the frame.

What independent hands-on testing found

Digital Camera World tested the lens on a Sony A7R V and reported fast, accurate autofocus. During bird testing, the reviewer said it kept up with darting birds and quick, erratic head movements well enough to produce a high hit rate of sharply focused images.

Those are the publication’s observations with that camera and subject matter, not a guarantee for every Sony body, firmware version or tracking mode. Autofocus results still depend on the camera’s subject-recognition system, shutter speed, available light, background contrast and your technique.

Why a fixed 400mm helps tracking

A prime lens removes zoom-ring decisions while you track. Your framing is set by your position and the subject’s movement, so there is one less control to manage during a fast sequence. The downside is that a bird or athlete can leave the frame if it approaches rapidly; you must step back, rotate with the subject or accept a tighter composition.

How effective are stabilization and image quality?

Sony includes Optical SteadyShot. Stabilization counteracts camera movement and can make a 400mm viewfinder image easier to hold steady, especially when you are waiting for a subject rather than shooting a fast-moving sequence.

Stabilization is not a substitute for shutter speed

Optical stabilization helps with your own hand movement, not with a bird’s wingbeat or an athlete’s sprint. For moving subjects, choose a shutter speed high enough to freeze the action and let the camera raise ISO when necessary. For static wildlife, stabilization can be more useful because it may let you use a slower shutter speed without introducing blur from hand movement.

Sharpness, color and bokeh in the published review

Digital Camera World described the lens as delivering strong sharpness and clarity, pleasing color and attractive bokeh in its hands-on use. The reviewer also reported minimal unwanted aberrations. These findings support the lens’s G Master positioning, but they are field observations rather than an independent laboratory MTF chart or a universal promise of identical results with every body.

What has not been established

No independent laboratory MTF chart, long-term durability study or controlled head-to-head comparison was available for this assessment. Treat Sony’s specifications as the reliable baseline and the Digital Camera World report as a useful real-world indication, not as a substitute for testing the lens with your own camera and subjects.

Is the 400mm F4.5 good for birds and sports?

Yes, provided 400mm fits the distances at which you work. It offers enough reach for many birds and field-sport situations while remaining easier to carry and reposition than a heavier super-telephoto prime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bird photography

At 400mm on a full-frame body, small birds can still occupy a modest portion of the frame unless they are fairly close. The 2.5 m minimum focus distance is helpful for larger birds, perched subjects and details at a nearby hide, but it does not turn the lens into a close-up specialist.

The F4.5 aperture helps in dawn and dusk conditions, when birds are active but light levels are low. It also gives you more shutter-speed headroom than a slower lens, which matters when a bird launches from a branch. The fixed field of view rewards careful positioning: a nearby bird may be too large to fit, while a distant bird may require cropping or a teleconverter.

Field and court sports

For outdoor sports, 400mm can isolate players from the far side of a field while preserving enough context to follow the play. The relatively bright aperture supports action-stopping shutter speeds and subject separation. On smaller courts or from close sidelines, 400mm may be too tight; a second body with a shorter lens can cover that gap more efficiently than trying to change lenses during play.

Trains and other distant subjects

The focal length suits trainspotting, aircraft observation and landscape details where you cannot approach the subject. Because the lens is a prime, scout your position before the event and leave room for the subject’s movement through the frame.

Can you handhold the Sony 400mm GM?

Most photographers with reasonable telephoto technique can handhold it for meaningful periods, and its 994 g weight is specifically what makes that practical. Whether you can hold it comfortably for an entire session depends on your camera’s weight, your support hand, shooting posture and how long you must keep the lens raised.

A practical handheld setup

  1. Support the lens under the barrel with your non-shooting hand and keep that elbow close to your torso.
  2. Tuck the camera and lens into your shoulder rather than extending your arms fully.
  3. Use a strap, harness or monopod when waiting for long periods, even if you intend to shoot handheld once action starts.
  4. Enable Optical SteadyShot and select a shutter speed appropriate to subject motion, not merely to the focal length.
  5. Practice panning before an important event; the lens’s balance helps, but technique still determines how smoothly you follow a moving subject.

A tripod foot is not included in the published weight figure. Add it, a quick-release plate and your camera when planning a support system. For long stationary observation, a monopod or gimbal can reduce fatigue; for rapidly changing positions, handheld operation preserves speed.

What is the difference between a 400mm F4.5 and a 600mm F6.3?

A 600mm F6.3 reaches farther and narrows the field of view, while the 400mm F4.5 is brighter, easier to frame with and more forgiving when a subject moves unpredictably. The right choice depends more on working distance and subject behavior than on the larger focal-length number alone.

Consideration 400mm F4.5 600mm F6.3
Nominal reach Baseline 400mm view 1.5 times the focal length, giving tighter framing from the same position
Maximum aperture F4.5 F6.3, approximately one stop slower than F4.5
Light and shutter speed More light for a given shutter speed and ISO Needs more ISO or a slower shutter speed in the same light
Tracking a moving subject Wider view makes it easier to acquire and keep erratic subjects in frame Narrower view magnifies movement and demands more precise panning
Background separation Strong subject isolation with the F4.5 aperture and 400mm perspective Tighter framing can increase apparent compression, but the slower aperture offsets some exposure advantage
Published weight, dimensions and price for the comparison lens 994 g, 242 mm, 108 mm diameter and $2,699.99 US MSRP for the Sony SEL400F45GM Not stated in the available specifications; verify the exact 600mm lens and regional price before comparing systems

Choose the 400mm when you work at variable distances, photograph fast-moving birds or sports and value all-day portability. Choose a 600mm-class lens when your subjects remain far away, framing density matters more than flexibility and you can accept the slower F6.3 aperture and the handling requirements of the particular model you select.

How do the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters change the lens?

Sony lists compatibility with the SEL14TC 1.4x and SEL20TC 2.0x teleconverters. They provide more reach without replacing the lens, but they reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor and can affect autofocus behavior and image quality depending on the camera, subject and conditions.

Combination Nominal focal length Nominal maximum aperture Practical trade-off
Lens alone 400 mm F4.5 Brightest option and widest field of view available from this lens
SEL14TC 1.4x 560 mm F6.3 More reach with about one stop less light; tracking and image quality may change
SEL20TC 2.0x 800 mm F9 Much tighter framing with two stops less light; autofocus and sharpness are more condition-dependent

The focal lengths and apertures in the table are the mathematical results of multiplying 400mm and F4.5 by the converter factor. They do not predict the exact autofocus limits of a particular camera. Check your body’s compatibility and focus specifications before relying on a converter for critical work.

What camera and accessories do you need?

You need a Sony E-mount camera. A full-frame body uses the lens’s intended angle of view; an APS-C body gives a narrower view, which can be useful for distant subjects but leaves less room to keep a fast-moving subject in frame.

Useful accessories

  • High-capacity batteries and cards: Long wildlife or sports sessions involve extended bursts and frequent autofocus operation.
  • 95 mm filters: The large front diameter means filters are expensive and physically substantial; buy only those you genuinely need.
  • Monopod or gimbal: Helpful for static observation or long sideline assignments, although neither is mandatory for handheld shooting.
  • Teleconverters: The SEL14TC and SEL20TC add reach when the subject remains too distant for 400mm, at the cost of light and potentially some AF or optical performance.
  • Rain and dust protection: The lens has dust and moisture resistance, but a cover and sensible shelter remain advisable in severe weather.

Who should buy the Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS?

It makes sense if you:

  • Photograph birds, wildlife or outdoor sports for hours and want to avoid a very heavy super-telephoto setup.
  • Need F4.5 for shutter speed and subject isolation in changing light.
  • Prefer a prime’s optical consistency and autofocus response over the flexibility of a zoom.
  • Can work within a fixed 400mm field of view or carry a second body for wider coverage.
  • Want the option of 560mm or 800mm with Sony’s compatible teleconverters.

Look elsewhere if you:

  • Need to reframe rapidly from nearby subjects to distant subjects without changing position.
  • Mostly shoot in small venues where 400mm is too tight.
  • Expect macro-level magnification from the 2.5 m minimum focus distance and 0.18x magnification.
  • Will use the lens only a few times and cannot justify a $2,699.99 specialist purchase.
  • Require a complete independent laboratory comparison before buying; the available evidence does not include one.

What are the main advantages and drawbacks?

Advantages Drawbacks
994 g without tripod foot, unusually manageable for a 400mm F4.5 prime Fixed focal length can be too narrow or too wide as subject distance changes
F4.5 aperture supports action-stopping shutter speeds and background separation $2,699.99 US MSRP is a substantial specialist-lens investment
Optical SteadyShot and center-of-gravity design support handheld work 95 mm filters and accessories add cost and bulk
XD Linear Motors are designed for fast, quiet, precise autofocus Teleconverters reduce light and may affect autofocus or image quality
2.5 m minimum focus and 0.18x magnification are useful for larger nearby subjects Published hands-on praise is not the same as an independent laboratory or long-term durability test

Is the Sony 400mm F4.5 GM OSS worth it?

For the wildlife or sports photographer who will genuinely handhold a 400mm lens for long sessions, the answer is yes. The combination of 994 g weight, F4.5 aperture, Optical SteadyShot, fast XD-motor autofocus and teleconverter support addresses the practical problems that make many long primes exhausting to carry.

It is not a universal replacement for a zoom or a 600mm lens. The fixed framing, premium price and converter trade-offs require a clear match between the lens and your working distance. If that match exists, the Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS is an unusually portable specialist prime rather than merely a lighter compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sony 400mm F4.5 come with a tripod foot?

Sony’s published 994 g weight excludes the tripod foot, so confirm the included accessories and the final carry weight with the retailer. A separate support plate or foot may also be needed to match your tripod or gimbal quick-release system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use ordinary 77 mm filters on this lens?

No. Sony specifies a 95 mm filter diameter, so 77 mm screw-in filters will not fit directly. A step-up arrangement or a large filter-holder system may be possible, but it adds size and can increase vignetting risk.

Will autofocus work with the 2.0x teleconverter on every Sony camera?

Not necessarily. The converter changes the combination to a nominal 800mm F9 setup, and autofocus performance or available focus modes can vary by camera model, firmware, light level and subject contrast. Check the camera and converter compatibility information before a critical assignment.

Is 0.18x magnification enough for insects or flowers?

It is useful for larger details and distant close-ups, but 0.18x is far below true macro magnification. Small insects will generally require cropping, extension or a dedicated macro lens to fill the frame.

Does the lens include a zoom range?

No. The SEL400F45GM is a 400mm prime, so changing composition requires moving your position, switching cameras or adding a compatible teleconverter. That fixed view is an advantage for consistency and a limitation when subjects move toward or away from you.
