When Sonos surround sound is not working, the cause is usually the signal reaching the home-theater product, a surround-volume setting, audio processing in the TV or source, or a Trueplay calibration that no longer matches the room. Start with a known multichannel TV program, verify the surround pair in the Sonos app, and check the incoming format before replacing hardware. Stereo/PCM is only two-channel audio, so rear speakers can be very quiet even when they are connected correctly. Delay usually points to processing in the TV or an external source; an “unsupported audio” message means the source is sending a format the Sonos product cannot decode. Use the sequence below to separate settings problems from pairing, network, or hardware faults.
What should I check first when my Sonos surrounds are silent?
Run a controlled test before changing several settings at once. Turn on a television program or movie known to contain multichannel audio, then open the room that contains the Sonos home-theater product and its surrounds. Confirm that both surround speakers appear in the room and raise the TV level.
- Open the room in the current Sonos app.
- Choose Sound > Surround Audio.
- Raise TV Level gradually and listen again.
- If you use the S1 app, open Settings > System > room > Surround Audio and make the same adjustment.
- Check the audio format that Sonos reports while the test program is playing.
This first check distinguishes quiet surround content from a missing speaker. A surround pair can be connected and functioning while producing little sound because the program is two-channel or because the TV is outputting a format that does not carry discrete rear channels.
Why are my Sonos rear speakers connected but producing very little sound?
The most common explanation is the combination of a low TV Level and a two-channel signal. Sonos explains that Stereo/PCM carries two channels; the system may infer or distribute some rear content, but it will not behave like discrete multichannel surround. Set the television to a supported multichannel output, such as Dolby Digital when the TV and source support it, if you want consistent rear-channel audio.

Check the surround level before changing the TV
In the room controls, open Sound > Surround Audio and adjust TV Level. Increase it only enough to make effects and ambience audible from the listening position. If both speakers respond to the change, the pair is receiving control commands and the initial problem was likely level or program content rather than a dead speaker.
Identify Stereo/PCM correctly
When Sonos reports Stereo/PCM, the incoming stream is two-channel. A news broadcast, menu, stereo music program, or many television channels may legitimately produce little rear activity. Do not treat quiet surrounds during that test as proof of a fault. Test with a known multichannel TV source after checking the output setting.
Choose a multichannel output on the TV
Open the television’s audio settings and look for a label such as Digital Audio Format or Audio Output. Select Dolby Digital when it is supported and appropriate for the connected Sonos home-theater product. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations, so use the television’s model-specific manual for the exact path. Recheck the format reported by Sonos after changing the setting.
| Format reported or selected | What it means for the rear speakers | Useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo/PCM | Two-channel input; rear output can be sparse or inferred rather than discrete surround. | Use it to remove processing delay if necessary, but select a supported multichannel format when surround is the priority. |
| Dolby Digital or another supported multichannel format | Provides a format the home-theater system can use for surround channels when the program carries them. | Leave the TV and source on the supported format and test with known multichannel content. |
| Unsupported signal | The TV or source is sending an audio format the Sonos product cannot understand. | Change the TV and source output formats, then test again. |
How do I fix Sonos surround audio that is delayed behind the picture?
Audio that arrives after the picture is commonly caused by processing in the television or an external source device. Reboot both devices, disable extra audio processing, and verify the output format. Sonos notes that switching to Stereo/PCM can remove processing delay, but that choice disables surround, so it is a timing workaround rather than a full surround solution.
Use this order for audio behind video
- Turn off the television and the external source device, wait briefly, and restart them.
- Review audio-enhancement, virtual-surround, or other processing controls on the TV and source; disable extra processing for the test.
- Check the TV’s Digital Audio Format or Audio Output and the source device’s corresponding format setting.
- Play the same known multichannel program again and compare lip sync.
- If the delay remains and surround is less important than synchronization, test Stereo/PCM. Remember that this removes surround capability.
Change one setting at a time and retest. That leaves you with a clear cause-and-effect record and prevents a timing fix from being mistaken for a speaker repair.

What if the sound is ahead of the picture?
When voices or effects occur before the matching image, open TV Dialog Sync in the Sonos room controls and move the slider to the right until the sound matches the picture. This control adds delay to the audio; it is the appropriate direction for audio that is early, not late.
What does “Sonos says unsupported audio” mean?
The message means the television or source is sending a format that the Sonos product cannot decode. It does not, by itself, show that a surround speaker has failed. Correct the output at every device in the signal path: the TV, cable or satellite box, streaming player, game console, and disc player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix the television’s output first
- Open the TV’s Digital Audio Format or Audio Output setting.
- Select a supported home-theater format, such as Dolby Digital when available for your equipment.
- Save the setting, restart playback, and check whether Sonos now reports a supported signal.
Then check the external source
A source device can override or replace the TV’s output choice. Apply the same format check to cable boxes, streaming players, consoles, and disc players. Blu-ray discs with DTS may need to be transcoded to Dolby Digital 5.1 before Sonos can play the soundtrack. Owners of S1 systems who need DTS playback should consider updating to the latest Sonos app, as Sonos identifies app generation as part of DTS troubleshooting.
Why do my Sonos surrounds sound distorted after I changed the room or settings?
Distortion is not resolved by one universal Sonos switch. First establish whether it occurs only with one source or with every multichannel program. Check the incoming format, remove extra TV or source processing, and test with the surround level returned to a moderate setting. If the sound changed after moving speakers, furniture, or the listening position, rerun Trueplay before concluding that a speaker is defective.
Separate a source problem from a room-tuning problem
- If distortion appears only from one cable box, streaming player, console, or disc player, inspect that device’s output format and processing.
- If every source sounds wrong after a room change, retune Trueplay with the speakers in their current positions.
- If the result is worse after tuning, compare with Trueplay turned off and adjust EQ. Sonos recommends retuning or disabling Trueplay for comparison when the tuned result does not sound right.
- If distortion remains across supported sources with normal levels and Trueplay off, contact Sonos support for model-specific diagnostics rather than repeatedly changing formats.
Avoid treating a two-channel PCM test as proof of distortion in a surround mix. Use the same known multichannel source before and after each change so that the comparison is meaningful.

How do I run Trueplay correctly for a Sonos surround system?
Trueplay measures how sound reflects from walls, furnishings, and other surfaces, then fine-tunes the speaker. Sonos supports Trueplay in surround home-theater configurations and lists Era 100 among products with Trueplay options. It is most useful after placement or room changes, but the measurement itself must be performed carefully.

- Choose a quiet time and minimize talking, appliance noise, and other sounds during measurement.
- Leave the surround speakers and the rest of the home-theater setup in their intended listening positions.
- Have a supported iOS or Android device ready for the Trueplay procedure.
Move the phone smoothly
Follow the app’s movement instructions and cover the entire listening area rather than measuring one chair only. Sonos recommends moving the iOS device smoothly from head height toward waist height as you walk. Do not wave it abruptly or stop in one small spot; the system needs a broad sample of the room’s reflections.
Do not change volume during measurement
Keep the volume fixed while Trueplay is measuring. A volume change, conversation, or loud appliance can contaminate the measurement. When the process is complete, listen to a familiar multichannel scene. If the result is less natural, retune with quieter conditions, adjust EQ, or turn Trueplay off for a direct comparison.
When should Trueplay be run again?
Retune after moving a speaker, changing the room layout, adding or removing substantial furnishings, or changing the surround arrangement. A calibration that was accurate for one placement does not necessarily remain accurate after those changes because the reflected sound field has changed.
What if only one rear speaker is silent?
When the app shows the surround pair, the TV is sending a supported multichannel format, timing controls are correct, and a careful Trueplay retune does not restore one channel, broaden the diagnosis beyond settings. Speaker, pairing, and network faults remain possible, and the cited format and tuning checks cannot identify which one is responsible.

Confirm the easy possibilities
- Verify that the silent speaker still appears as part of the surround pair in the room.
- Raise TV Level briefly and test a known multichannel source.
- Confirm that the TV and source are not reporting Stereo/PCM or an unsupported signal.
- Restart the TV and source, then test again.
- Retune Trueplay only after confirming that the speakers are in their current positions and the room is quiet.
If the same speaker remains silent after these checks, contact Sonos support for model-specific diagnostics. Do not assume that swapping channels or repeatedly reinstalling the app will repair a pairing or hardware fault; those actions are not established by the cited guidance.
Could a replacement speaker solve a silent surround channel?
A replacement is a product-compatibility decision, not the first troubleshooting step. A compatible model such as Era 100 is a possible replacement or additional-speaker path to investigate, but compatibility with the existing home-theater product and app generation must be verified before purchase. A replacement will not correct a TV format mismatch, processing delay, or a network problem affecting the existing pair.
Check these requirements before choosing a replacement
- Compatibility with the existing Sonos home-theater product.
- Compatibility with the Sonos app generation in use, including S1 or the current app where relevant.
- Whether you need one matching speaker or a matched stereo surround pair.
- Trueplay support and access to a supported iOS or Android device.
- Power outlets, placement, and the room layout at the intended positions.
Use Sonos support to confirm the exact model combination before treating a replacement as a guaranteed fix.

- Both surrounds are quiet, but the app sees them: raise TV Level, then check whether the signal is Stereo/PCM. Test Dolby Digital or another supported multichannel format.
- Audio is behind video: restart the TV and source, disable extra processing, and review output formats. Stereo/PCM may remove delay but disables surround.
- Audio is ahead of video: use TV Dialog Sync and move the slider right.
- An unsupported-audio message appears: change the TV and source output formats. Check disc-player DTS settings and S1 app requirements.
- Sound changed after moving furniture or speakers: run Trueplay again with broad, smooth coverage and no volume changes.
- One speaker remains silent after all checks: treat it as a possible speaker, pairing, or network fault and contact Sonos support.
What should I record before contacting Sonos support?
Support can diagnose a persistent fault faster when the symptom is reproducible. Note the room name, whether one or both surrounds are affected, the source device being tested, the format Sonos reports, and whether the problem is missing audio, delay, or distortion. Also record whether the pair appears in the app, whether restarting changes anything, and whether Trueplay was run after the latest placement change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will switching from Stereo/PCM to Dolby Digital make every program use the rear speakers?
No. Dolby Digital provides a supported multichannel format, but the program still has to contain surround information. A genuinely stereo broadcast can remain mostly front-focused even when the TV is configured correctly.
Should I leave TV Dialog Sync enabled after fixing a delay?
Only if the timing still matches with the control in its new position. Recheck after changing the TV or source format, because removing processing can change the amount of delay and make the previous adjustment unnecessary.
Can a noisy room cause a failed Trueplay result?
Yes. Sonos instructs users to minimize talking and appliance noise while measuring. If the tuning sounds wrong, repeat the process in quieter conditions before judging the speakers.
Is an unsupported DTS Blu-ray disc evidence that my surrounds are defective?
No. DTS may need to be transcoded to Dolby Digital 5.1, particularly with S1 systems. Test a supported soundtrack or correct the disc player’s output before diagnosing the speakers.
