For a private race with friends and custom rules, use Friend Match—the Xbox listing identifies it as the friends’ 12-player lobby mode. The detailed official Lobby ID directions available are from the 2025 Open Network Test, so use them as a guide rather than assuming the retail menus are identical.
How to play online with friends
Choose Friend Match for a friends’ lobby. Xbox describes Friend Match as a way to play against friends in lobbies of up to 12 players with custom rules. World Match is a separate competitive mode, not the same friends’ custom-lobby option.

SEGA’s detailed instructions for joining by Lobby ID were published for the 2025 Open Network Test, not confirmed as current retail-menu instructions. In that test, the host opened the Friend List and displayed the current Lobby ID; friends searched for the lobby using that ID. If your retail menus differ, follow the options shown in-game.
Can you play with friends on other platforms?
Yes. SEGA confirms crossplay, so players can race online across supported platforms. The official platform list includes PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Crossplay is for online play; local communication is a separate way to play nearby.

Online player limit and local play
SEGA’s launch announcement lists up to 12 players online and 1–4 players in general local play. On the original Nintendo Switch version, local communication supports up to 8 players. Local communication does not mean internet crossplay.
Do you need a subscription to play online?
Requirements vary by platform. SEGA’s FAQ for the 2025 Open Network Test says Nintendo Switch online modes require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Xbox’s current store listing says console online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. These sources establish requirements for Switch and Xbox; they do not establish subscription requirements for the other platforms.

If the connection is unstable
SEGA’s Open Network Test FAQ says an unstable connection could make play difficult or return a player to the title screen. For that test, SEGA suggested restarting the modem, router, or other network equipment and waiting before trying again; if using Wi-Fi, try a wired connection when available. These are basic test-era suggestions, not a guarantee of a fix for the retail game.
