SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted (SWOSH) is worth considering when you need one customer-controlled monitoring platform for a hybrid estate. It combines network, server, application, log, IP address, user/device, VoIP, virtualization, configuration, vulnerability, storage and web-performance functions in a single SolarWinds Platform deployment. The trade-off is that your team owns the management servers, database, upgrades, capacity planning and much of the implementation work.
Public 2026 starting prices are $8 per node per month for Essentials, $14 for Advanced and $17.50 for Premier. Those rates are attractive for a broad suite, but the real cost depends on node count, contract term, database infrastructure, optional licenses and the staff time needed to configure all the modules.

SWOSH is software that you deploy and operate yourself, either behind your firewall or in infrastructure that your organization manages in AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform. A centralized SolarWinds Platform provides the web console and polling services, while a separate database server stores monitoring data in the documented simple architecture.
SolarWinds positions the product for hybrid IT environments where security, compliance or operational policy makes a vendor-hosted management plane undesirable. Monitoring can use ICMP, SNMP, WMI, APIs and other protocol-specific methods. An optional Platform Connect bridge can share data with SolarWinds Observability SaaS and enable cloud-based capabilities, but the self-hosted installation remains the system you operate.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The product is best suited to an IT team that wants to consolidate several monitoring tools and is prepared to run Windows servers, SQL Server, polling engines, discovery jobs, alert rules and upgrades. It is less suitable if you want a completely managed SaaS service with no infrastructure responsibility.
Is SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted worth it?
It can be good value when the breadth of integrated modules replaces multiple products and your organization values deployment control. It is a weaker fit when your environment is small, your team cannot support SQL Server and application maintenance, or you only need basic uptime checks.
| Choose SWOSH when you need | Think twice when you need |
|---|---|
| One console for network, server, application, log, virtualization and configuration data | A hands-off SaaS monitor with no servers or database to maintain |
| Deployment on premises or in an account your organization controls | A very small deployment where a broad platform would be excessive |
| Tiered licensing that adds flow, vulnerability, storage and web monitoring as your requirements grow | A single narrowly focused function at the lowest possible administration cost |
| Control over polling, retention, credentials and firewall placement | A team without time for discovery, template tuning, alert design and upgrades |
ITPro’s 2026 hands-on assessment described an integrated Orion web console, broad feature coverage and good value per node. It also found that the breadth requires configuration time and that infrastructure sizing matters. That is a useful planning signal, not a guarantee for every production environment.
How much does SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted cost?
SolarWinds lists subscription pricing by monitored node. The public starting prices below are for 2026, use multi-year contracts and are billed annually.
| Edition | Starting price per node/month | Illustrative 100-node monthly cost | Illustrative 100-node annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $8 | $800 | $9,600 |
| Advanced | $14 | $1,400 | $16,800 |
| Premier | $17.50 | $1,750 | $21,000 |
The examples multiply the published starting rate by 100 nodes; they are not quotes and exclude taxes, infrastructure, optional licenses and services. A multi-year commitment is billed annually, so budget both the recurring invoice and the internal cost of running the platform.
Enterprise editions are available for deployments of 500 or more nodes and are required above 1,500 nodes under SolarWinds’ licensing documentation. ICMP-only availability nodes can be free under the documented licensing model, but nodes that use richer polling or monitoring functions are subject to the applicable subscription rules. Confirm the treatment of your specific node types before signing a contract.

SolarWinds advertises a 30-day fully functional trial. Use that period to model your actual node mix, polling frequency, database growth and the modules you will operate rather than extrapolating from a small lab.
What is the difference between Essentials, Advanced and Premier?
The editions are cumulative: Advanced adds capabilities to the Essentials base, and Premier adds further modules and entitlements to Advanced.

Can you run SWOSH in your own AWS, Azure or GCP account?
Yes. SolarWinds documents deployment on premises or in customer-managed AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform instances. In cloud deployment, you still own the virtual machines, network paths, firewall rules, operating-system maintenance, backups and database operations.
A simple installation uses a main SolarWinds Platform server that provides polling and the web console, plus a separate database server. Larger or more distributed environments can add polling engines and other scale or availability components. Design network routes from polling locations to monitored devices and from the platform servers to the database before installation; otherwise discovery may succeed while polling or historical storage fails.
Platform Connect is optional. It provides a bridge to SolarWinds Observability SaaS for data sharing, migration scenarios and cloud-based anomaly capabilities. Enabling it changes the data-flow and governance conversation, so document what leaves the self-hosted boundary and who can access it.
What server and SQL capacity does SWOSH need?
There is no single safe sizing number for every deployment. Node count, polling methods, polling interval, enabled modules, retention, log volume, reporting and high-availability requirements all affect CPU, memory, storage and database capacity.
ITPro installed the product in a Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V virtual machine with eight Xeon Scalable Gold vCPUs and 16 GB of virtual memory. Low-memory alerts appeared, so the reviewer increased the VM to 32 GB. Those are observations from one lab, not a universal production specification; use them as a warning to test memory pressure rather than as a fixed recipe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe same evaluation used SQL Server Express for testing but states that production deployments require a full SQL Server 2016 or later version. Express can therefore be useful for an evaluation, but it should not be treated as the production database plan. Include SQL licensing, storage performance, backup, retention and maintenance in the design.
- Platform servers: reserve CPU and memory for the web console, polling work, discovery and alert processing.
- Database server: use a supported full SQL Server edition for production and size storage for historical metrics, logs and reports.
- Polling engines: place additional engines near remote networks or cloud segments when latency, firewall boundaries or scale makes centralized polling unsuitable.
- Network paths: allow the required ICMP, SNMP, WMI, API, VMware and database traffic through controlled firewall rules.
- Capacity testing: run representative discovery and normal polling during the trial, then monitor memory, CPU, database growth and collection delays.
How do you deploy and configure SWOSH?
A successful rollout treats licensing, infrastructure, discovery and alert quality as one project rather than simply running an installer.

- Define the node model. List servers, network devices, virtual infrastructure, cloud entities, applications and availability-only checks. Mark which systems need detailed polling and which can use ICMP-only monitoring.
- Select the edition. Map required functions to Essentials, Advanced or Premier. Include possible SEM or ARM licensing and decide whether the 500-node or 1,500-node enterprise thresholds affect procurement.
- Build the platform and database roles. Provision the main SolarWinds Platform server and a separate supported SQL Server. In cloud deployments, use subnets, security groups, routes and backup policies under your control.
- Install the platform. Follow SolarWinds’ setup workflow, connect the database, secure the web console and verify that polling services can reach both the database and intended monitoring targets.
- Add polling capacity where needed. Deploy additional polling engines for remote sites, segmented networks or workloads that would overload a single collector.
- Run Discovery Central. Use the wizard to discover cloud entities and network devices. Provide SNMP, WMI, VMware and other credentials only through approved secret-management and access-control procedures.
- Choose monitoring depth. Apply server and application templates, hardware health checks, virtualization counters, flow sources, configuration baselines and log sources selectively. Starting with every template can create noise and unnecessary load.
- Configure quality and anomaly monitoring. For Quality of Experience analysis, connect supported switch mirror-port sensors. In Advanced or Premier, create machine-learning and custom anomaly alerts after establishing a baseline.
- Test alert delivery and reporting. Trigger representative failures, confirm routing and escalation, and check that dashboards and reports answer the operational questions your team actually receives.
- Document operations. Record polling credentials, database backups, upgrade windows, retention, ownership of alert rules and the process for adding nodes so the platform remains maintainable after launch.
What can the platform monitor?
The main value proposition is consolidation. Modules share the Orion web console, so an incident can be investigated across infrastructure layers instead of switching between unrelated tools.
Network, server and application health
Network performance monitoring covers device availability and performance, while Server & Application Monitor templates provide application-aware checks. Hardware health monitoring and virtualization reporting add component and hypervisor context. WMI, SNMP, ICMP, VMware credentials and APIs let you match the collection method to the target system.
Recommended Free Tools
Flows, logs and user experience
Advanced adds flow monitoring and analysis for traffic conversations and utilization. Log monitoring and analysis is available from Essentials upward. VoIP and network quality assurance are also part of Essentials, and the review describes Quality of Experience analysis using switch mirror-port sensors.
Configuration, vulnerability and access context
Advanced adds server configuration management, configuration baselines and a security vulnerability dashboard. User and device tracking and IP address management are included in Essentials, helping connect an alert to the address, endpoint or user context behind it.
Storage and web performance
Premier adds storage performance monitoring and web performance monitoring. These functions matter when the same operations team is responsible for application response, storage latency and the network paths between them.
Cloud and SaaS entities
Discovery Central can assist with cloud entities, and API pollers can collect Microsoft 365 data. Premier includes a SolarWinds Observability SaaS network/infrastructure entitlement; Platform Connect can be enabled when your organization wants the self-hosted deployment to exchange data with the SaaS service.
How good are SWOSH’s analytics and alerting?
Advanced and Premier include machine-learning anomaly-based alerting, while the platform also supports custom anomaly alerts. These features can identify behavior that does not fit a learned baseline, but they do not remove the need for sensible thresholds, maintenance windows and ownership of each alert.
Start with a small set of high-value services and tune collection before enabling broad anomaly coverage. Otherwise normal changes such as backups, patch windows or month-end traffic can become false positives. Use the integrated dashboards to correlate an anomaly with flow, server, application, virtualization or log evidence before escalating it.

What did the independent hands-on review find?
ITPro reported that its Windows Server 2025 Hyper-V installation took about 40 minutes and that the modules appeared in an integrated Orion web console. The reviewer tested Discovery Central, SNMP/WMI/VMware credential-based discovery, Microsoft 365 API pollers, hardware health checks, virtualization reports, configuration baselines and custom anomaly alerts.
The reviewer’s initial 16 GB virtual-memory allocation generated low-memory alerts, leading to a 32 GB allocation. The review also distinguishes evaluation use of SQL Server Express from production use of a full SQL Server 2016 or later edition. These findings show where a proof of concept can expose problems early; they should not be read as a guaranteed installation time or minimum size for your estate.
ITPro’s overall assessment was that the suite delivers broad capability and good value per node, while cautioning that configuring such a wide feature set takes time. That balance—consolidation versus operational effort—is the central SWOSH decision.
What are the main advantages and disadvantages?
| Advantages | Disadvantages and risks |
|---|---|
| Customer-controlled deployment behind the firewall or in your cloud account | You operate servers, SQL Server, backups, upgrades and capacity planning |
| Many monitoring disciplines in one integrated console | Feature breadth creates a significant configuration and tuning workload |
| Clear tier progression from core monitoring to flow, vulnerability, storage and web performance | Higher tiers cost more per node, and some integrated products may need extra licenses |
| Optional bridge to SaaS capabilities without making the entire installation vendor-hosted | Platform Connect introduces additional data-flow and governance decisions |
| Node pricing can be economical when it replaces several specialized tools | Multi-year contracts and annual billing reduce short-term flexibility |
| Self-led documentation, guided onboarding and paid deployment services | Complex environments may require professional services and dedicated internal ownership |
What support and onboarding options are available?
SolarWinds documents three implementation paths. A self-led project uses setup instructions and project plans; complimentary guided onboarding is typically completed within two hours; and paid fixed-scope Deployment Services are available for larger or more complex environments.
SolarWinds Academy and community resources provide additional learning channels. For a straightforward pilot, self-led material may be enough. For a multi-site rollout with SQL, polling-engine placement, custom templates and strict change control, budget for design and deployment assistance rather than assuming a short guided session will complete the project.

Use the trial as an operational proof of concept, not just a feature tour.
- Count billable nodes using the same definitions you expect in the contract.
- Test the exact mix of SNMP, WMI, ICMP, VMware and API polling used in production.
- Measure database growth and storage latency at your intended retention period.
- Exercise discovery across remote networks and cloud accounts.
- Confirm that dashboards, reports, anomaly alerts and escalation paths work for your service owners.
- Test a backup and restore procedure for the database and platform configuration.
- Estimate staff hours for template selection, alert tuning, upgrades and troubleshooting.
- Compare the combined subscription, SQL, infrastructure and labor cost with the tools you would otherwise keep.
If the trial demonstrates that one platform can replace several monitoring silos and your team accepts the operational ownership, SWOSH’s breadth and node economics are compelling. If you only need a few availability checks or cannot support a self-hosted stack, the extra capability may become overhead rather than value.
Frequently asked questions
Are ICMP-only availability checks really free?
SolarWinds’ documented licensing model allows ICMP-only availability nodes at no license charge. Verify that a device remains strictly within that definition; adding richer polling or management functions can move it into the paid node count.

Will self-hosting keep all monitoring data inside my network?
The core platform can run behind your firewall without requiring a vendor-hosted management plane. Platform Connect is optional, but enabling it for SaaS features or migration means you should review exactly which data is shared, where it is processed and how access is governed.
How can I tell whether Essentials is enough?
Map every required outcome—not just device count—to the edition matrix. If you need flow, virtualization, vulnerability, configuration or machine-learning anomaly features, plan for Advanced; storage, web performance, incident-response licenses or value-based licensing point toward Premier.
What should a realistic pilot include?
Include a representative remote site, a few critical applications, normal and peak traffic, your intended SQL retention and at least one failure drill. A pilot that measures only installation time can miss the memory, database-growth, alert-noise and firewall issues that determine production effort.
