To block Software Reporter Tool safely, first verify that it is the genuine Chrome file, then use a supported Chrome policy if your legacy or managed installation offers one. The tool belonged to Chrome’s historical Cleanup system, which Google began phasing out with Chrome 111; it is not a guaranteed component of every current Chrome installation. Deleting or renaming the file is usually temporary, while changing permissions can interfere with Chrome maintenance.
What is Software Reporter Tool?
Software Reporter Tool is a Windows executable associated with Chrome’s historical Chrome Cleanup system. Its familiar filename is software_reporter_tool.exe. Google began phasing Chrome Cleanup out with Chrome 111, according to Google’s announcement as summarized by iTechGuides in 2023. As a result, finding the executable is possible on an older browser or a managed deployment, but it should not be assumed to be part of every current Chrome installation.
The usual historical location is %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser DataSwReporter<version>software_reporter_tool.exe. A familiar filename alone does not authenticate a program: a copy elsewhere, such as Downloads or a temporary or public folder, could be unrelated or malicious. Verify the full path and Google digital signature, and consider the parent process and security-scan results before deciding what to do.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Software Reporter Tool malware?
Not necessarily. A file in Chrome’s historical SwReporter directory with a valid Google signature is materially different from an unsigned copy in an unexpected location, but neither the filename nor the folder name alone proves that a file is safe.

Check the running process
- Open Windows Task Manager and locate the process named Software Reporter Tool, if it is running.
- Use the process’s option to open its file location. Compare the full path with the historical Chrome
SwReporterlocation above. - Inspect the executable’s digital signature and confirm whether it is signed by Google.
- If the path is unexpected or the signature is absent, preserve the file and scan it before deleting or blocking it. A security alert, changed search engine or homepage, redirects, persistent pop-ups, or unwanted extensions are additional reasons to investigate the system rather than treating this as a routine Chrome setting.
Google’s unwanted-software guidance recommends checking installed applications, keeping Safe Browsing enabled, and resetting Chrome when appropriate. Do not assume that disabling a legacy scanner will remove an infection or fix browser changes caused by unwanted software.
Why can the tool use CPU?
A legacy cleanup process may be noticeable while it runs, but the available evidence does not establish a current, universal CPU pattern or a reliable amount of usage. If you see sustained high CPU, first confirm the process path and signature, then update Chrome and check whether an organization policy controls cleanup behavior. Avoid blocking an unidentified executable solely because its name resembles Chrome’s historical tool.
Chrome may also recreate a deleted or renamed copy after an update or restart. Repeated file creation does not by itself prove malware; Chrome or an updater may restore a legacy component. Establish which browser installation and policy are involved before choosing a more durable block.

How do you choose a way to stop it?
For an older or managed installation where Chrome’s cleanup policy is supported, the policy setting is the least invasive option described here. For current consumer Chrome, do not treat registry instructions as a universal control. Permission changes can prevent execution but may affect browser maintenance, and deleting or renaming the file is not durable.
| Approach | Durability after updates | Current versus legacy compatibility | Reversibility and maintenance impact | Administrator or management considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Use the ChromeCleanupEnabled policy |
Policy-based rather than dependent on deleting a file; the behavior still depends on whether the installed Chrome version supports the policy. | Described for supported legacy or managed installations; not a universal setting for current consumer Chrome. | Can be changed back; disables cleanup scanning when supported. | May require administrator rights; managed Chrome policy may be set by an organization. |
Change permissions on the file or SwReporter folder |
Can block execution more durably than deleting or renaming, but updates or maintenance may be affected. | A workaround for a legacy process that continues to cause a documented problem, not a general current-Chrome control. | Reversible if the original permissions are recorded; removing inheritance can interfere with maintenance. | Changing permissions may require administrator rights; consider management restrictions. |
| Delete or rename the executable | Temporary: Chrome or an updater can recreate it after an update or restart. | Does not address whether current Chrome uses the component. | Easy to undo if the file returns, but does not provide a dependable long-term block. | Rights depend on the file and Windows configuration. |
How do you disable cleanup scans with Chrome policy?
Use this option only when the installation is an older or managed Chrome deployment for which the policy is supported. Google’s enterprise documentation places Windows Chrome policies under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesGoogleChrome. The policy described for disabling cleanup scans is ChromeCleanupEnabled with a value of 0.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://policyand review whether cleanup-related policy is already being applied. If this is a work- or school-managed browser, ask the administrator before changing anything. - If you administer a supported installation, use the applicable Chrome enterprise policy method. In the Windows Registry, the documented policy location is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesGoogleChrome; configureChromeCleanupEnabledas a policy value of0. Editing this machine-wide registry area may require administrator rights. - Restart Chrome, reopen
chrome://policy, and confirm whether the policy is shown and applied. If it is absent or marked with an error, do not assume the scanner was disabled.
ChromeCleanupReportingEnabled controls reporting; it is not the switch for disabling cleanup scans. Neither setting should be described as a universal way to turn off all Chrome metrics, crash reporting, or other data collection. Google says Chrome checks whether settings have changed when the browser launches, so a setting that is unsupported or overridden should not be treated as effective merely because a registry value exists.

How do you block it with Windows permissions?
Use a permissions change only if a verified legacy process continues to cause a documented problem and a supported policy is unavailable. Windows Security’s advanced permissions controls can be used on the executable or its SwReporter folder to block execution, but removing permission inheritance can disrupt Chrome maintenance. The exact options shown can vary by Windows configuration.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Record the file or folder’s current permissions and inheritance state before changing them. This gives you a reference for restoring the original setup.
- Open the file or folder’s security permissions and use the Advanced permissions controls to make the necessary restriction. Apply it narrowly to the verified executable or its specific reporter folder rather than changing unrelated Chrome folders.
- Restart Chrome and check whether the process still runs. If updates, cleanup, or other browser maintenance begins to fail, restore the original permissions and inheritance rather than layering on additional restrictions.
A permissions block can be more durable than deleting the file, but it is not a free-standing Chrome setting. It trades execution prevention for the possibility of interfering with maintenance, so keep the change reversible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if Chrome keeps recreating the file?
First distinguish ordinary restoration from a suspicious copy. A file that reappears at the historical path after an update or restart may have been restored by Chrome or an updater; a file that appears in an unexpected location or lacks a Google signature needs security investigation.

- Update Chrome, then inspect
chrome://policyfor policies that govern the installation. - If the installation is managed, ask the administrator whether a cleanup policy is being applied or reset centrally.
- If the verified legacy process is still causing a concrete problem, use a supported cleanup policy where available. Consider a permissions restriction only after recording the original state and understanding the maintenance trade-off.
- If there are browser hijacking symptoms or the file is suspicious, inspect unfamiliar Windows apps, keep Safe Browsing enabled, scan the file, and reset Chrome when appropriate. Repeatedly deleting the executable does not address the cause of unwanted browser behavior.
How do you handle suspicious copies or unwanted browser changes?
Treat an unsigned executable in an unexpected location as a security issue, not as proof that the genuine Chrome utility is malicious. Preserve and scan the file, and investigate the browser symptoms independently.
- Review Windows installed apps for software you do not recognize and remove unwanted applications through Windows’ normal uninstall controls.
- Keep Chrome Safe Browsing enabled and look for extensions you did not choose.
- If search or homepage settings have changed, pages redirect, or pop-ups persist, follow Google’s unwanted-software guidance and reset Chrome if appropriate.
- After remediation, verify the executable’s path and signature again before blocking or removing it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Software Reporter Tool missing from my current Chrome installation?
Chrome Cleanup was phased out beginning with Chrome 111, so a current installation may not include the historical executable. Its absence alone is not evidence that Chrome is broken.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t I change Chrome’s cleanup policy on my work computer?
An organization may manage Chrome policies centrally, and local changes can be restricted or overwritten. Ask the administrator responsible for the browser rather than trying to bypass a managed setting.
Does a Google signature guarantee that a file is safe?
A valid signature helps establish the file’s publisher, but it is only one part of the assessment. Also consider the full path, parent process, scan results, and whether the browser is showing unwanted-software symptoms.
