CPU clocks and cache
The 8s Gen 3’s prime core can reach 3.0 GHz, compared with 2.8 GHz for the 7 Gen 4. Its four performance cores are also rated up to 2.8 GHz versus 2.4 GHz, while its three efficiency cores reach 2.0 GHz versus 1.84 GHz. The listed 8 MB of L3 cache, compared with 3 MB, gives the 8s Gen 3 a further specification advantage, although cache size alone cannot predict an application’s exact speed.
Memory capacity is not the same as memory speed
Both platforms support LPDDR5X, yet the listed maximum bandwidth is 67.2 GB/s for the 8s Gen 3 and 33.6 GB/s for the 7 Gen 4. The 8s Gen 3 also allows up to 24 GB of memory, while the 7 Gen 4 is listed for up to 16 GB. Those are platform limits, not guarantees: a phone may ship with less RAM and may use a different storage or memory configuration than another phone using the same chip.
How much faster is each chip in benchmarks?
The following figures come from NanoReview’s comparative database. They aggregate results from tested phones, so they show the performance position of each platform rather than a controlled, identical-device laboratory test.

| PCMark 3.0 | 15,526 | 14,769 | About 5% higher |
The pattern matters more than any single total. CPU and graphics tests show a clear 8s Gen 3 lead, while PCMark’s everyday-work score is much closer. Some individual PCMark subtests favor the 7 Gen 4, demonstrating that a newer or differently tuned phone can perform competitively in a particular light task even when the overall platform ranking favors the 8s Gen 3.
Why the sample size changes how you should read the numbers
NanoReview lists 14 tested phone models for the 8s Gen 3 and five for the 7 Gen 4 in the PCMark comparison. The unequal sample sizes make the figures useful for direction and scale, but not for claiming that every 8s Gen 3 phone will beat every 7 Gen 4 phone by exactly the percentages shown.
Is Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 better for gaming?
Yes, the 8s Gen 3 is the stronger choice for demanding 3D games, emulation and other graphics-heavy workloads. Its Adreno 735 GPU scores 1,033 versus 667 in Steel Nomad Light, and Qualcomm lists real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution and Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 for the platform.
What the GPU lead means in practice
- Higher graphics headroom gives a game more room to maintain resolution, effects quality or frame rate when a scene becomes complex.
- Ray tracing support is a hardware feature; whether a particular game enables it depends on the game engine, Android build and manufacturer software.
- Game Super Resolution can trade rendered resolution for a sharper-looking output, but the game and device must implement the feature.
- Frame-generation or motion features do not automatically turn a low base frame rate into a consistently smooth experience; the game, thermals and frame-time behavior still matter.
How to interpret the stability result
In the cited Steel Nomad Light comparison, the 7 Gen 4 records 98% stability versus 90% for the 8s Gen 3. Stability is one test metric, not a complete battery-life or sustained-frame-rate measurement. The 8s Gen 3 still has the much higher graphics score, so the stability result should be read as a reminder that a specific phone’s cooling and power policy can matter as much as the silicon tier.

Will the 8s Gen 3 stay faster during long sessions?
The platform has more peak performance, but no chip comparison can guarantee a particular handset’s long-session behavior. A phone’s vapor chamber or graphite spreader, chassis size, firmware limits, battery temperature policy, display resolution and game settings determine how long it can sustain its initial speed.
Check these handset details before buying
- Cooling hardware: Look for a documented vapor chamber or other thermal design when the phone is intended for extended gaming.
- Performance modes: A manufacturer’s gaming mode may raise power limits, while a battery-saver profile may cap clocks.
- Panel resolution: Rendering at QHD+ can impose more GPU work than rendering at 1080p, even on the same SoC.
- Software maturity: Updates can improve scheduling, game compatibility and thermal behavior, but they can also change benchmark scores.
- Battery condition: Aging batteries and high temperatures can trigger more conservative power limits.
When comparing two actual phones, prefer reviews that report repeated runs, surface temperature and frame-time behavior rather than relying on one peak benchmark result.
What do the chips support for displays, storage and connectivity?
The 8s Gen 3 has the broader documented ceiling for display and modem throughput, but the 7 Gen 4 can still appear in phones with fast panels, modern storage and Wi-Fi 7. The manufacturer’s implementation is decisive.
Displays
Qualcomm lists support up to 4K at 60 Hz or QHD+ at 144 Hz for the 8s Gen 3. The comparison data lists up to 2880 × 1800 for the 7 Gen 4. Neither statement tells you what a particular handset actually has: a phone may use a 1080p 120 Hz panel, a QHD+ panel at a lower refresh rate or a resolution and refresh combination chosen to manage heat and battery use.

Storage
UFS 4.0 is listed for the 8s Gen 3. The 7 Gen 4 comparison lists UFS 2.2, UFS 3.1 and UFS 4.0, meaning manufacturers have more than one possible storage tier. Check the phone’s specification sheet for the exact UFS version rather than inferring it from the processor name.
5G and Wi-Fi
The 8s Gen 3 uses the Snapdragon X70 5G modem and is listed for up to 6.5 Gbps downlink, alongside Wi-Fi 7. The 7 Gen 4 comparison lists 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and up to 4.2 Gbps download. These are maximum platform figures. Your carrier’s spectrum, regional bands, signal quality, router and antenna layout will determine actual speeds.
Which chip has better AI, camera and media capability?
There is no apples-to-apples AI benchmark in the available results. Qualcomm describes the 8s Gen 3 as using a Hexagon NPU and fused AI accelerator architecture with INT4, INT8, INT16 and FP16 support. Qualcomm’s 7 Gen 4 announcement describes on-device generative-AI assistants, large language models and Stable Diffusion image generation, and claims a 65% AI improvement over its predecessor.
Those statements use different baselines and test methods. The 65% figure compares the 7 Gen 4 with its own predecessor, not with the 8s Gen 3, so it cannot establish which of these two chips is faster for AI. Camera quality likewise depends on the image signal processor configuration, camera sensors, lens quality and the phone maker’s imaging software; the SoC name alone is not a camera ranking.

What to look for in an AI-focused phone
- Confirm which AI features are enabled in the phone’s regional software and whether they run on-device or require a cloud service.
- Check the manufacturer’s supported camera resolutions, video modes and computational photography features.
- Look for sustained-use tests if you expect repeated AI image generation or long video processing sessions.
- Do not treat a vendor’s percentage improvement against an older chip as a direct comparison with a different platform.
Does the newer Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 make it a better buy?
Not automatically. The May 2025 announcement gives the 7 Gen 4 a release-date advantage over the March 2024 8s Gen 3, but Qualcomm’s series numbering places the 8s platform above it for peak performance. Newer launch timing can bring longer remaining software support or newer phone designs, yet those benefits are handset-specific and cannot be inferred from the SoC alone.
Choose a 7 Gen 4 phone when its complete package is better for your priorities—for example, when it offers the display, camera system, update policy, ergonomics or storage configuration you want. Choose an 8s Gen 3 phone when demanding performance, gaming headroom, emulation or faster graphics is the deciding factor.
Which Snapdragon phone should you buy?
Use the following decision framework rather than choosing by launch year alone.
Choose Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 when you:
- Play demanding 3D games and want the highest graphics headroom of these two options.
- Use emulators, video tools or other workloads that scale with CPU and GPU performance.
- Want the higher listed memory bandwidth, larger cache and support for phones configured with up to 24 GB of RAM.
- Plan to keep the phone for several years and value extra performance margin, provided the handset has adequate cooling and software support.
Choose Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 when you:
- Find a specific phone whose camera, display, software support or physical design is substantially better for your needs.
- Mostly use messaging, browsing, streaming and ordinary productivity, where the PCMark gap is comparatively small.
- Prefer a newer phone generation and have verified its storage, memory, thermal design and update commitments.
- Do not need the 8s Gen 3’s higher graphics ceiling and the 7 Gen 4 model offers a better overall value in your market.
Questions to ask on the product page
- What RAM capacity and UFS storage version does this exact model use?
- What are the panel resolution and maximum refresh rate, and can the phone sustain its high-refresh mode?
- Does the manufacturer specify a vapor chamber, gaming mode or performance profile?
- Which 5G bands and Wi-Fi features are supported in your region?
- How long will the manufacturer provide operating-system and security updates?
- Are the advertised AI and camera functions available in your country and software version?
What are the main limitations of this comparison?
First, the benchmark values come from tested phones rather than identical reference devices. Cooling, firmware, RAM amount, display resolution and power limits can move a phone’s score substantially. Second, the PCMark comparison contains 14 8s Gen 3 phone models but only five 7 Gen 4 models, so the samples are unequal. Third, benchmark versions matter: AnTuTu 11, Geekbench 6 and Steel Nomad Light should not be mixed with results from older versions.

What is the bottom-line performance verdict?
Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is the clear performance winner in the cited results, especially for graphics-intensive gaming and emulation. Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is newer and can make sense in a well-designed phone aimed at everyday use, multimedia and on-device AI, but its vendor AI claims are not direct 8s Gen 3 comparisons. For a purchase decision, compare the exact handset’s thermals, memory, storage, display, software support and regional connectivity alongside the processor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 faster simply because it launched later?
No. Launch date and product tier are separate measures. The 7 Gen 4 was announced in May 2025, but the available AnTuTu, Geekbench and 3DMark results place the older 8s Gen 3 ahead.
Can I compare benchmark scores from two phones directly?
Only if the test version and conditions are comparable. Screen resolution, performance mode, cooling, RAM, firmware and battery temperature can all change the result, so use repeated tests from the same review as well as the chip-level averages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 guarantee 144 FPS in games?
No. The platform can support high-refresh displays and has greater graphics headroom, but the game’s frame-rate cap, rendering settings, thermal limits and the phone’s panel determine the actual result.
Should I buy the phone with more RAM?
More RAM can help keep more apps available and gives manufacturers room for demanding software, but it does not make the processor itself faster. Compare the actual RAM amount, storage speed and software memory management on each model.
Do Qualcomm’s AI percentage claims prove which chip has better AI?
No. The 7 Gen 4’s quoted 65% improvement is measured against its predecessor, while the 8s Gen 3 specifications describe supported AI data types and architecture. Without a shared benchmark and identical test conditions, the claims are not a direct ranking.
