Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the faster chipset overall in the available benchmark comparison, with the clearest advantage in single-core CPU and graphics tests. Dimensity 8400 is much closer in multi-core performance and supports an all-big-core design, LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4 storage, high-resolution displays and advanced gaming features. Those results are directional rather than a guarantee for every phone: the comparison combines different handset models, while cooling, firmware, memory configuration, screen resolution and power limits can materially change sustained performance. Choose Snapdragon when gaming and peak responsiveness are the priority; consider Dimensity when a specific phone offers better cooling, battery capacity or price.
What are Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 8400?
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 8400 are flagship-class smartphone system-on-chips (SoCs). An SoC combines CPU cores, graphics, an AI processor, image-processing hardware, memory controllers and cellular connectivity in one package. The Snapdragon platform was announced on October 24, 2023, while MediaTek announced Dimensity 8400 on December 23, 2024. The later release date makes Dimensity newer, but age alone does not determine speed or efficiency.

Both chips use a 4 nm manufacturing process and eight CPU cores. Snapdragon uses a mixed-core arrangement with one very large Cortex-X4 core, five Cortex-A720 performance cores and two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores. Dimensity uses eight Cortex-A725 cores in an “all-big-core” layout, giving it a different balance between peak responsiveness and parallel workloads.
In practical terms, either platform can deliver fast app launches, high-refresh-rate interfaces, demanding photography and modern 3D games. The phone built around the chip is just as important as the silicon: a large vapor chamber, conservative power limits, fast storage and well-tuned firmware can make a lower-scoring device feel better over a long gaming session.

Which chipset has higher benchmark scores?
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 leads every benchmark in the cited NanoReview comparison. The figures below are database aggregates rather than a laboratory test of two identical phones, so use them to establish relative capability, not to predict an exact score for a handset on a store shelf.
| Benchmark | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Dimensity 8400 | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnTuTu 11 overall | 2,345,563 | 1,948,428 | Combined CPU, GPU, memory and user-experience score; Snapdragon is about 20% higher in this database. |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 2,203 | 1,576 | Short, bursty work such as opening an app, loading a webpage or running a single foreground task. |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 6,511 | 6,239 | Parallel workloads such as video processing, compression and sustained background tasks. |
| 3DMark Steel Nomad Light | 1,652 | 1,346 | Modern cross-platform graphics rendering with a heavier emphasis on GPU capability. |
| 3DMark Solar Bay | 8,190 | 5,948 | Ray-tracing-oriented graphics performance. |
| PCMark 3.0 | 16,318 | 14,015 | Mixed everyday tasks such as browsing, writing, photo work and data manipulation. |
The PCMark figures are especially easy to overread. NanoReview’s result pool contains 41 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone models but only five Dimensity 8400 models, so the sample sizes are uneven. Differences in handset cooling, software and display settings can therefore influence the database averages.
Why is Snapdragon ahead in single-core performance?
Snapdragon’s large Cortex-X4 prime core is designed for high peak instruction throughput, and the Geekbench single-core result shows a substantial lead for short foreground tasks. A phone with that behavior usually feels particularly quick when launching applications, switching between screens, processing a camera shot or completing a brief JavaScript-heavy webpage.

Dimensity’s eight Cortex-A725 cores are all performance-class cores, but they are not arranged around a single ultra-large prime core. That design gives MediaTek more uniform parallel resources, yet it does not match Snapdragon’s peak single-thread result in the cited comparison. Android scheduling, thermal headroom and the speed of the phone’s storage still affect how noticeable the difference feels.
Why are the multi-core results much closer?
Multi-core tests run several threads simultaneously, which suits Dimensity 8400’s all-big-core arrangement. Its multi-core score trails Snapdragon by only a small margin in the cited data, despite the much larger single-core gap. This is why a Dimensity phone can remain highly responsive during long exports, multitasking or workloads that keep many cores busy.
Do not assume that a higher multi-core score automatically means longer battery life. Eight large cores can draw significant power when all are active, while a phone maker may cap clocks to control heat. Look for independent battery and sustained-performance testing of the exact model if endurance is more important than peak benchmark numbers.
What do the graphics benchmarks mean for gaming?
Snapdragon leads both listed 3DMark tests, including the ray-tracing-oriented Solar Bay run. That points to stronger raw GPU capability in the tested devices and gives Snapdragon a wider margin for demanding effects, higher frame rates or heavier graphics settings.
Snapdragon’s Adreno 750
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 uses Qualcomm’s Adreno 750 GPU. Qualcomm says its upgraded Adreno design delivers 25% faster graphics rendering and 25% better GPU power efficiency than the preceding generation. Those are Qualcomm’s product-page comparisons, not a guarantee that every phone will realize the same improvement; cooling and the manufacturer’s power profile remain decisive.
Dimensity’s Mali-G720 MC7 and gaming software
Dimensity 8400 uses a Mali-G720 MC7 GPU and includes MediaTek Frame Rate Converter (MFRC) support. MediaTek describes MFRC as working with the GPU to increase gaming performance, and its Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 can adjust behavior according to workload and thermal conditions. These features can improve smoothness in supported games, but game-engine support and the phone maker’s tuning determine whether a particular title benefits.
What to expect in real games
For a game that is limited by GPU shading or ray-tracing effects, Snapdragon’s benchmark lead provides more headroom. At a fixed 60 frames per second, however, both chips may deliver the same visible result if the game reaches its frame-rate cap. A Dimensity phone with a larger vapor chamber may also sustain its target frame rate longer than a thinner Snapdragon phone that throttles quickly.
How do the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 8400 specifications compare?
The core specifications explain the benchmark pattern, but they do not describe every feature of a finished phone. The table separates platform-level information from details that vary by manufacturer.

“Up to” figures describe what the silicon can support, not what every phone will include. A manufacturer can pair either chip with a lower-resolution panel, slower storage, a different camera sensor or fewer enabled modem bands.
Which chip has better memory and storage performance?
Both platforms support LPDDR5X memory, but the cited comparison gives Snapdragon a higher maximum memory-bandwidth figure. Higher bandwidth can help integrated graphics, large image processing and workloads that move substantial data between the CPU, GPU and memory.
Dimensity 8400’s official specification lists UFS 4 storage. Storage performance still depends on the capacity and flash package selected by the phone maker, so two phones using the same SoC can have different app-install and file-copy speeds. Check the exact model’s specification sheet for storage generation and capacity rather than inferring it from the chipset name.
What camera, video and display features does Dimensity 8400 support?
MediaTek lists support for camera sensors up to 320 megapixels, 4K capture at 60 frames per second, AV1 video playback and WQHD+ displays running at up to 144 Hz. Those limits are useful when comparing phone designs: a manufacturer can build a high-resolution camera system or fast display without exceeding the platform’s stated support.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Sensor size, lens quality, optical stabilization, HDR processing, microphone design and the camera application’s tuning often matter more than the headline megapixel number. The same applies to displays: panel brightness, touch sampling, variable-refresh behavior and calibration are phone-level decisions.
How does connectivity compare?
Qualcomm integrates the Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF System with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. MediaTek presents Dimensity 8400 as supporting a 5G-Advanced modem. In both cases, the usable experience depends on regional bands, carrier certification, antenna design and whether the manufacturer enables features in that model.
Do not choose solely from a modem name when buying an imported phone. Verify the bands used by your carrier, dual-SIM behavior, roaming support and regulatory approval for your country. A theoretically capable modem cannot compensate for missing local bands or weak antenna tuning.
Which is better for sustained gaming and battery life?
Neither chipset guarantees longer battery life or cooler operation. Sustained performance is governed by the phone’s heat spreader, vapor chamber, chassis, battery voltage, screen resolution, firmware limits and ambient temperature. A benchmark run lasting a few minutes measures peak output; a 30-minute game reveals whether the phone can hold that output.
Signs of a well-cooled phone
- A large vapor chamber or graphite cooling system described in the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Independent tests showing stable frame rates after 20 to 30 minutes, rather than only a high opening score.
- Moderate surface temperatures and no aggressive brightness reduction while gaming.
- A performance mode that explains its power and temperature trade-offs instead of simply raising clocks.
How display settings change endurance
A WQHD+ panel at 144 Hz consumes more power than a lower-resolution 120 Hz panel when brightness and content are comparable. If two phones use different resolutions, their battery figures cannot be attributed to the SoC alone. Adaptive refresh-rate controls, game resolution and brightness can matter as much as the processor choice.

How should you compare two actual phones using these chips?
When two listings appear similar, follow this process instead of relying on the SoC name alone.
- Confirm the exact regional model. Product names can hide different memory, modem-band and camera configurations between countries.
- Record RAM and storage. Compare LPDDR5X capacity, storage generation and available space; these affect multitasking and installation times.
- Check cooling details. Look for a vapor chamber, graphite layers and any published sustained-performance data.
- Compare the display workload. Note resolution, maximum refresh rate, brightness and whether games run at native or reduced resolution.
- Read long-session tests. Prefer results after at least 20 minutes of gaming or repeated benchmark loops over a single opening score.
- Verify software support. Update policy, driver delivery and game-specific optimization come from the phone maker and software partners.
- Check battery and charging behavior. Capacity, charging speed, charger availability and thermal limits can outweigh a modest benchmark difference.
- Compare the complete price and warranty. A cheaper chipset is not a bargain if the phone has less storage, a weaker camera or poor regional support.
What benchmark pitfalls should you avoid?
- Comparing different test conditions: Screen resolution, battery level, temperature and performance modes can shift scores substantially.
- Treating database averages as guarantees: The cited figures aggregate multiple phone models, and the Dimensity sample is much smaller.
- Using one benchmark for every workload: Geekbench single-core, Geekbench multi-core, 3DMark and PCMark measure different behaviors.
- Ignoring throttling: A high first run may fall after repeated loops when the chassis reaches its thermal limit.
- Assuming platform support equals a finished feature: Camera resolution, display refresh rate, modem bands and AI tools may be disabled or limited by the manufacturer.
- Equating newer with faster: Dimensity 8400 arrived later, but the Snapdragon platform still leads the cited benchmark set.
What is the final verdict?
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the safer choice for maximum benchmark performance, demanding graphics and the strongest single-thread responsiveness. Dimensity 8400 remains a capable high-end platform: its multi-core result is close, its all-big-core layout suits parallel workloads, and its official feature list covers fast memory, UFS 4 storage, high-refresh WQHD+ displays and advanced camera/video capabilities. For a purchase, select the better-engineered phone rather than the chip in isolation, giving sustained cooling, display, battery, software and regional connectivity equal weight.
