Verdict in brief: The Smeg TSF01PBAU is a premium, design-led two-slice toaster that earns its price only if you value its pastel-blue 1950s styling, six browning settings and useful bagel, defrost and reheat programs. Its 36 mm self-centering slots handled both thick farmhouse slices and ordinary supermarket bread in qualitative testing, but it still makes only two slices per cycle. Toasting performance looks competent rather than independently proven superior: public numerical test results are not available, so buyers should treat this as a well-equipped style purchase, not a laboratory-backed performance champion.
What is the Smeg TSF01PBAU?
The TSF01PBAU is Smeg Australia’s pastel-blue version of its 50’s Style two-slice, two-slot toaster. It combines a retro cabinet with modern electronic controls, automatic centering, automatic pop-up and a removable stainless-steel crumb tray. The model is intended for Australian mains power and ships with a 220–240 V Australian plug.
Its basic proposition is straightforward: two wide slots, six browning levels and dedicated programs for bread that is frozen, already warm or cut as a bagel. The styling is the feature that separates it from an ordinary toaster, while the slot width and controls determine whether the premium is useful in daily cooking.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Specification | TSF01PBAU detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Two slices per cycle | Suitable for one or two people; larger households need additional cycles. |
| Slot width | 36 mm per slot (Smeg Australia current specification) | Leaves room for thicker sliced or homemade bread, subject to slice dimensions. |
| Browning control | Six levels | Lets different users choose lighter or darker toast without changing appliances. |
| Programs | Reheat, defrost and bagel | Adds dedicated settings for common situations beyond ordinary fresh bread. |
| Racks | Automatic self-centering | Helps place a slice centrally against the heating elements. |
| Controls and ejection | Automatic pop-up | The toast rises when the cycle ends instead of requiring a manual lever release. |
| Cleaning | Removable stainless-steel crumb tray | Crumbs can be emptied without turning the appliance upside down. |
| Power | 950 W, 220–240 V Australian plug (Smeg Australia current specification) | Designed for Australian outlets; check electrical compatibility before use elsewhere. |
| Dimensions | 310 mm wide × 195 mm deep × 198 mm high (Smeg Australia listing) | Measure your bench space, including room above the toaster for loading slices. |
Is the TSF01PBAU worth its price?
It can be worth the price for a buyer who wants a coordinated retro kitchen aesthetic and will use the extra programs. It is harder to justify if the only goal is the cheapest way to brown two slices of bread, because the appliance’s capacity remains that of a basic two-slot toaster.

Smeg Australia’s captured store listing showed a sale price of A$269 against an A$299 recommended retail price. A separate CHOICE specification record listed A$299. These are retailer- or record-specific figures rather than a guaranteed current price, so check the live Australian listing before ordering.
The value calculation is therefore subjective:
- Paying for appearance: The pastel-blue finish, chrome detailing and rounded 50’s Style shape make the toaster part of the kitchen’s visual design.
- Paying for control: Six browning levels, one-sided bagel operation, defrost and reheat are more flexible than a single mechanical dial.
- Not paying for capacity: You still receive two slots, so serving four people requires two cycles.
- Not paying for a published score: CHOICE lists the model, but its Expert Rating and test results are behind membership. There is no public numerical evidence from that page to establish superior evenness, timing or temperature safety.
For a style-conscious one- or two-person kitchen, the higher price can be rational. For a busy family that values throughput above appearance, a four-slice design may deliver more practical value even if its exterior is less distinctive.
How many slices can it toast at once?
The maximum is two slices per cycle, one in each slot. That limit is fixed by the hardware; using the bagel program does not turn the toaster into a four-slice model.
Two-slot capacity works well when breakfast is prepared for one or two people. For three or four servings, plan on sequential cycles and remember that the second batch may not match the first if different browning settings are selected. If everyone wants the same shade, record the dial position that works and reuse it for the next cycle.
Capacity also affects entertaining. Toasted sandwiches, multiple slices for a brunch table or a family breakfast will take longer than with a four-slot appliance. In exchange, the TSF01PBAU occupies a narrower 310 mm width than many four-slot models, although its 195 mm depth and 198 mm height still need to fit comfortably on your bench.
Can it handle thick or homemade bread?
The 36 mm slot width and self-centering racks are designed to accommodate slices of different thicknesses. In Ideal Home’s qualitative review testing, the toaster handled thick farmhouse slices as well as standard supermarket bread in its two wide slots.
That evidence supports practical versatility, but it does not mean every oversized slice will fit. A slice must be narrow enough to enter the slot without being forced, and toppings or irregular crusts can change how freely it moves. Homemade bread with a thick, uneven crumb may need to be trimmed to the slot’s shape rather than pushed down.

Using thick slices safely
- Check that the slice enters the 36 mm opening without compression or scraping.
- Keep the slice upright so the self-centering rack can position it evenly.
- Stop using a piece that catches, bulges above the slot or cannot rise freely when the cycle ends.
- For a new recipe or loaf, begin at a lighter browning level and adjust after seeing the result.
The available test is editorial observation, not a published clearance measurement for every bread style. Treat 36 mm as the slot specification, not a promise that every 36 mm-shaped item will toast safely or evenly.
Does the Smeg two-slot toaster toast evenly?
The available evidence is encouraging but limited. Ideal Home reported that the TSF01 handled both thick farmhouse slices and ordinary supermarket bread while using a mid-range setting. The reviewer also noted six browning functions and found the dedicated modes useful.
Automatic centering should help keep a slice at a consistent distance from the heating elements, which is especially useful when bread is narrower than the slot. However, neither Smeg’s specification nor the publicly visible CHOICE page provides a numerical evenness or consistency score. CHOICE’s detailed results require membership, so it would be misleading to claim that this model has independently verified best-in-class uniformity.
Expect to fine-tune the dial for your bread. Moisture, slice thickness, starting temperature and sugar content all affect browning. A setting that produces medium toast on packaged white bread may produce a darker surface on a dense farmhouse loaf. The six-position control gives you adjustment range, but it cannot eliminate differences between recipes.
What do the reheat, defrost and bagel buttons do?
Each program addresses a different starting condition. Selecting the correct one is more useful than simply increasing the browning level when the bread is frozen or already cooked.
Reheat
Reheat is intended for toast that has cooled and needs warming without running a full browning cycle. It is useful when a slice was prepared a few minutes early or when you want to warm bread without adding as much colour as a normal cycle would.
Defrost
Defrost is for frozen bread. It adds a thawing stage before or as part of the toasting process, avoiding the need to thaw slices separately. Frozen bread can behave differently from fresh bread, so check the first result and adjust the browning level rather than assuming the same dial position will transfer perfectly.

Bagel
Bagel mode browns one side while leaving the other side un-toasted. Place the bagel halves so the cut sides face the active heating side, following the orientation indicated by the control markings. This setting is intended for the cut face of a bagel rather than for ordinary slices that need colour on both sides.

They do not increase the two-slice capacity, and they cannot correct bread that is too wide, badly positioned or unable to rise freely.
How do you use the TSF01PBAU for the first time?
The controls are simple, but a deliberate first cycle helps you establish the right browning level for your bread.
- Position the toaster: Set it on a stable, dry bench with the 310 mm × 195 mm footprint fully supported and enough open space above the 198 mm-high body to load and remove bread.
- Choose the bread: Use slices that can enter the 36 mm slots without force. Remove loose crumbs or fillings that could fall into the mechanism.
- Select a starting level: Begin around the middle of the six browning settings when trying a new bread. This is a starting point, not a guaranteed result.
- Select a special program if needed: Use defrost for frozen bread, reheat for already toasted bread that has cooled, or bagel for one-sided browning.
- Start the cycle: Keep both slices similarly sized when possible so they finish at approximately the same time. The self-centering racks position each slice automatically.
- Check the result: When the automatic pop-up raises the toast, inspect the colour before choosing a darker or lighter setting for the next cycle.
- Clear crumbs regularly: Once the appliance has cooled, remove the stainless-steel tray and empty it rather than allowing loose crumbs to accumulate.
Because the TSF01PBAU has six levels instead of a continuously variable control, you may need to choose the nearest setting and accept small differences between batches. Keeping bread thickness and starting temperature consistent improves repeatability more than repeatedly changing programs.
How easy is it to clean and maintain?
The removable stainless-steel crumb tray is the main maintenance feature. It lets you collect crumbs at the base and empty them directly, avoiding the mess of shaking a toaster over a bin. The automatic pop-up also leaves the slice accessible without fishing it out with a utensil.
For routine care, unplug the toaster, allow it to cool completely and slide out the tray before emptying it. Wipe the tray and exterior with a soft, slightly damp cloth appropriate for the finish, then make sure all parts are dry before replacing the tray and reconnecting power. Do not insert metal objects into the slots to remove stuck food; if a slice does not rise normally, disconnect power and let the appliance cool before deciding how to proceed.
The built-in cord wrap helps keep excess cable off the bench when the toaster is stored. Anti-slip feet are intended to keep the appliance stable during normal lever and control use. Neither feature removes the need to keep the toaster away from water and to empty crumbs periodically.

How large is it, and will it suit a small kitchen?
At 310 mm wide, 195 mm deep and 198 mm high, the TSF01PBAU is a relatively compact two-slot appliance in width, but it still needs usable clearance above the slots. Measure the available bench area rather than relying only on the front-to-back footprint: you need room to load bread, lift slices out and route the power cord.
The pastel-blue finish and chrome details make the toaster visually prominent. That can be an advantage in a coordinated kitchen and a disadvantage if you prefer appliances to disappear into a cupboard. The cord-wrap feature supports storage, but moving a 950 W appliance in and out every day is less convenient than leaving it in a dedicated spot.
What are the warranty and power considerations?
Smeg Australia’s captured store listing states a two-year replacement warranty. CHOICE’s specification record shows a one-year warranty field. Because those records conflict and warranty terms can vary by seller or change over time, confirm the warranty period, remedy and Australian service process on the live seller documentation before purchase.
The official specification gives the toaster a 950 W rating and a 220–240 V Australian plug. It is therefore an Australian-market model, not a universal-voltage travel appliance. Buyers outside Australia should verify both mains voltage and plug compatibility with the seller rather than relying on a plug adapter alone.
What are the main strengths and trade-offs?
| Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Distinctive pastel-blue 50’s Style design with chrome details. | Premium pricing is difficult to justify if appearance has no value to you. |
| 36 mm self-centering slots accommodate a range of slice thicknesses. | Only two slices can be toasted per cycle. |
| Six browning levels allow lighter or darker results. | Dial settings still need adjustment for different breads and moisture levels. |
| Bagel, defrost and reheat programs cover common special cases. | Programs do not increase capacity or guarantee identical results for every bread. |
| Automatic pop-up, anti-slip feet, cord wrap and a removable stainless-steel crumb tray simplify routine use. | Public numerical evidence for evenness, consistency, timing and temperature safety is unavailable without the paid CHOICE results. |
| 950 W Australian specification and clearly stated dimensions. | 220–240 V Australian plug limits straightforward use in other electrical regions. |
How should you compare it with another toaster?
Compare the TSF01PBAU against the actual way your household makes toast, not just against its colour or advertised feature count. The following checklist identifies the differences that matter most.
| Comparison question | What to check | TSF01PBAU position |
|---|---|---|
| How much toast do you make? | Two versus four slots and the time required for repeat cycles. | Two slices per cycle. |
| Do you use thick or irregular bread? | Published slot width, rack centering and real-world handling of dense slices. | 36 mm slots; Ideal Home reported successful thick farmhouse-slice testing. |
| Do you toast bagels or frozen bread? | Whether bagel, defrost and reheat programs are provided and clearly marked. | All three programs are included. |
| How important is repeatability? | Independent consistency data, number of browning levels and control precision. | Six levels; no public numerical CHOICE score. |
| How much bench space is available? | Width, depth, height and clearance for loading. | 310 × 195 × 198 mm. |
| How will you maintain it? | Removable crumb tray, stable feet and cord storage. | All three are specified. |
| What happens if it fails? | Warranty duration, replacement terms and seller responsibilities. | Two years is stated by Smeg Australia’s listing; CHOICE records one year, so verify current terms. |
| What is your budget? | Current local price rather than an old list price. | A$269 sale versus A$299 RRP was captured; A$299 appears in the CHOICE record. |
Who should buy the Smeg TSF01PBAU?
Choose it when the following description matches your kitchen:
- You normally toast one or two servings at a time.
- You want a pastel-blue retro appliance that remains visible on the bench.
- You regularly switch between ordinary bread, frozen slices, reheated toast and bagels.
- You appreciate six selectable browning levels and wide self-centering slots.
- You are comfortable checking the current price and warranty instead of assuming that an older listing still applies.
Look for a different format when:
- Four people need toast simultaneously.
- Fast batch throughput matters more than a coordinated visual design.
- You require independently published numerical evidence of browning uniformity or temperature performance before buying.
- You live outside the Australian electrical market and cannot confirm compatible voltage and warranty support.
Final verdict: is it a good two-slot toaster?
The Smeg TSF01PBAU is a capable, attractive two-slot toaster with useful controls and enough slot width for many thick slices. Its strongest case is the combination of design, six browning levels, self-centering racks and dedicated bagel, defrost and reheat programs. Ideal Home’s hands-on summary supports its ability to handle both farmhouse and standard bread.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Its limitations are equally clear: two-slice capacity, premium pricing and a lack of publicly available numerical test results. At an observed A$269 sale price it is easier to recommend to someone who values the styling; at the A$299 listed price, the purchase should be deliberate rather than automatic. Verify the live Australian price and warranty, measure your bench, and buy it for the complete design-and-controls package rather than an unproven promise of best-in-class evenness.
