What the MultiGrill MGF01 actually does
The MultiGrill is not a single flat griddle that happens to press sandwiches. Smeg designs it around three distinct configurations:
Contact mode for toasties, meat and vegetables
In Contact mode, the upper and lower plates close around the food. This is the configuration for panini and other toasted sandwiches, waffles, meats and vegetables. The interchangeable plates determine the texture: use the grill plate for ridges or the griddle plate for a flatter cooking surface.
Oven mode for gentler top-heat cooking
Oven mode lets you adjust the upper plate rather than clamping it tightly onto the food. That provides clearance for thicker items and allows gentler cooking or searing from above. It is closer to an adjustable countertop grill than to a sealed sandwich press.

BBQ mode for an open, two-sided grill
Open the appliance flat and both plates become available. Smeg describes this as “twice the cooking surface.” Its regional product information also describes independent grilling plates and separate temperature control, allowing food on each side to be managed independently.
Plates, presets and controls
Four plates are included:
- One grill plate
- One griddle plate
- Two waffle plates
The plates have a ceramic non-stick coating. Smeg’s Australian listing identifies that coating as PFAS-free and says the plates are dishwasher-safe. A removable drip tray catches excess oil and cooking juices.

An LCD display provides the main interface, with a timer, temperature adjustment and preset programmes. The listed presets are Panini, Waffle and Burger. Smeg says the preset time and temperature can be customized, so they are starting points rather than locked recipes.

Check the model sold in your country before buying. Voltage, plug, colours, warranty coverage and even the applicable price are market-specific; a 220–240 V model must not be connected to a 120 V outlet.

The practical advantage is consolidation: one appliance covers several jobs without storing a separate waffle maker and grill. The cost is the footprint and weight of a full multi-function machine, plus the time needed to swap and wash plates.
What to check before ordering
- Measure the storage location: the published body size is 470 × 360 × 210 mm. Leave additional clearance to open the lid fully and, in BBQ mode, to use both sides.
- Confirm the electrical specification: regional versions range from 220–240 V models rated at 1,680–2,000 W to a US 120 V, 1,800 W version.
- Check the included contents: the standard listing specifies one grill plate, one griddle plate and two waffle plates. An optional MGGP01 flat-and-griddle plate set is listed separately by Smeg.
- Verify cleaning claims for your market: PFAS-free coating and dishwasher-safe plates are specifically stated on Smeg’s Australian listing.
- Recheck price and warranty locally: the UK and Australian figures are storefront listings from 2026, not universal prices.

The MGF01 is therefore a genuine multi-function countertop grill, not merely a toastie maker with marketing extras. Whether it is worth the price depends on how often you will use the griddle, waffle and open-BBQ configurations alongside sandwich pressing.
