Short answer: The Smeg KLF01BLAU is worth considering if you want a well-finished 1.7 L retro-style kettle that boils water to 100°C quickly and looks good on the counter. It is not a precision tea kettle: there are no temperature presets, no displayed temperature and no keep-warm mode. The Australian specification is 2400 W at 220–240 V, with a soft-opening lid, 360-degree swivel base, concealed element and removable limescale filter. Its drawbacks are the relatively heavy body, a small water window and an exterior that can become hot. Check the exact regional suffix, voltage, warranty and current price before buying, because specifications and stock differ by country.
What is the Smeg KLF01BLAU?
The KLF01BLAU is a conventional electric kettle with a 1.7-litre capacity, equivalent to about seven cups. Its job is straightforward: heat water to boiling, then switch itself off. The Australian specification uses a 2400 W heating system on 220–240 V mains. A stainless-steel body with a powder-coated finish, polished chrome details and a rounded 1950s-inspired shape provide the visual appeal, while the concealed heating element, removable filter and swivel base cover everyday practicality.
The model does not offer selectable temperatures. You cannot set 70°C for green tea, 80°C for coffee or 95°C for a pour-over; pressing the switch starts a normal boil cycle that ends at 100°C. That distinction is the key to evaluating it. You are paying for design, materials and handling details around a basic boiling function, not for programmable water preparation.

It is a sensible purchase when appearance, simple operation and a large family-sized capacity matter more than temperature control. It is harder to justify if you mainly drink teas that require lower temperatures, need a lightweight travel-friendly kettle or expect a highly visible water gauge.

CHOICE lists the KLF01BLAU at $199 on its product page, but prices are market-sensitive and the page’s detailed expert, ease-of-use, noise, boil-performance and energy-efficiency scores are available only to members. Treat the $199 figure as the price shown by that Australian listing, not a permanent recommended retail price.
How fast does the Smeg KLF01BLAU boil?
The 2400 W rating should provide brisk boiling for a full 1.7 L load on a compatible 220–240 V circuit, but the available evidence does not establish a controlled boil-time result. One customer review hosted by a US retailer described the kettle as boiling “very very fast”; that is a single review from nine years ago, not a laboratory measurement.
Real time depends on starting temperature, water volume, altitude, mains voltage and whether the kettle is descaled. A half-litre fill will naturally finish sooner than a full load. For efficient use, heat only the amount you need, while staying above the 0.5 L minimum listed by CHOICE. Do not exceed the 1.7 L capacity, because overfilling can force hot water into the lid or spout area when it boils.
Does the KLF01BLAU have temperature control?
No. The KLF01BLAU is a single-temperature kettle: it heats water to boiling and shuts off at 100°C. There is no temperature dial, preset button, display or keep-warm setting.

That makes it suitable for black tea, boiling-water cooking and drinks where you would otherwise wait for a kettle to finish. It is less suitable for green or white tea, delicate coffee brewing and baby-formula preparation where a specified temperature is important. You can let boiled water cool manually, but the kettle cannot hold or target a chosen temperature. Smeg’s KLF04 is a different model family if you specifically need variable-temperature operation; do not assume its controls or specifications apply to the KLF01BLAU.
How does the design affect everyday handling?
The painted-metal body and chrome trim are the central design features. They give the kettle a solid, furniture-like appearance, but they also contribute to its weight. The Smeg specification sheet gives a 1.6 kg net weight, while CHOICE lists 1.34 kg; either figure is substantial before adding water. A full 1.7 L load adds roughly 1.7 kg of water, so lifting the kettle with one hand may feel tiring for some users.

Water window
Owner feedback on the related KLF01BLEU colour variant repeatedly praises the appearance but identifies a small, poorly visible water indicator as a drawback. Ceneo reports 4.5 out of 5 from 34 opinions for that BLEU variant, with displayed subratings of 94% for boiling speed, 92% for build quality and 66% for temperature settings. These figures are directional owner feedback, not a controlled test of the exact BLAU SKU, and the temperature-settings score reflects the absence of advanced controls.
Lid and pouring
The soft-opening lid is designed to rise in a controlled way instead of snapping open. That is useful when filling under a tap and reduces the chance of a sudden lid movement. Open the lid fully before filling, keep the water below the maximum mark and pour with the spout directed away from hands. The specification does not state a separate anti-drip or flow-control system, so pouring technique still matters.
Base and cord
The 360-degree swivel base lets you return the kettle from either side, which helps left- and right-handed users. Cord measurements differ by source: Smeg lists 1 m, while CHOICE lists 78 cm, probably reflecting different measurement points or the amount of usable cable outside the base. Measure the distance to your outlet rather than assuming either figure will suit a particular countertop layout.

Does the exterior get hot?
Yes, the metal body can become hot during boiling and remain hot after the switch trips. A Ceneo owner specifically listed a hot exterior and the kettle’s weight among the disadvantages. Hold the unit by its handle, keep it away from the edge of a worktop and do not let children touch the body immediately after a boil. The handle and lid controls are intended for normal operation, but the safe assumption is that every exposed metal surface may be hot.
How do the filter and concealed element affect cleaning?
The removable stainless-steel limescale filter catches scale particles before they leave through the spout. The concealed heating element leaves the bottom of the jug smooth, with no exposed coil to scrub around. Together, those features make routine cleaning easier than on an older exposed-element kettle, although they do not eliminate descaling.
- Unplug the kettle and allow it to cool completely.
- Remove the filter according to the manual’s instructions, rinse it under running water and brush away loose scale gently.
- Empty the jug and wipe the interior and exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Keep the electrical base and connector dry.
- Descale when deposits become visible or the boil cycle becomes less efficient, using a method approved in the manual for your region.
- Rinse thoroughly and discard the first boil after descaling so no cleaning residue remains.
The available documentation confirms that the filter is removable but does not establish a specific replacement-part number or a universal descaler concentration. Contact Smeg support in your country with the complete KLF01 suffix before ordering a replacement filter.
What safety protections does it have?
The kettle automatically switches off when water reaches 100°C and when it detects that no water is present. The concealed element and automatic shut-off reduce the risk of continued heating, but they are not a substitute for supervision.
The manual states: “The appliance has been designed specifically for domestic use. It must only be used to heat water.” It also directs owners to use the appliance indoors, keep children away and follow the cleaning and maintenance instructions. Do not use it for milk, soup, oil or other liquids; those can foam, leave residue or create a hazard that the kettle was not designed to manage.

What is different about regional versions?
Do not treat every KLF01 listing as electrically interchangeable. The Australian KLF01BLAU specification is 2400 W at 220–240 V. A US listing for KLF01BLUS describes a 56-ounce capacity, 120 V supply, no temperature control, removable filter, automatic shut-off and concealed element; that listing is marked “NO LONGER AVAILABLE.” Its voltage and availability do not apply to the Australian BLAU model.
Before ordering, read the complete suffix on the rating label and retailer page, then check the voltage, plug, warranty provider and return terms for your country. A plug adapter does not convert voltage. Using a 220–240 V appliance on a 120 V supply, or the reverse, can prevent heating or damage the appliance.
How should you set it up and use it?
Initial setup is simple, but following a consistent fill-and-pour routine prevents the most common mistakes.
- Remove all packaging and check that the kettle, lid, filter and base are intact.
- Place the base on a level, dry indoor surface near a correctly rated outlet.
- Open the lid, fill with cold water between the minimum mark (CHOICE lists 0.5 L) and the 1.7 L maximum, then close the lid fully.
- Set the kettle on the 360-degree base and press the power switch.
- Wait for the switch to trip at the end of the boil. Do not open the lid or move the kettle unnecessarily while water is actively boiling.
- Lift by the handle and pour carefully, remembering that the metal body may be hot.
- After use, empty leftover water if the kettle will sit for a long period and leave the lid open briefly so the interior can dry.
How does the KLF01BLAU compare with what you need?
The right choice depends more on your routine than on the badge or styling.

Final verdict: who should buy the Smeg KLF01BLAU?
Buy the KLF01BLAU if you want a distinctive, substantial kettle for ordinary boiling and value its metal construction, soft-opening lid, swivel base and removable filter. Its 1.7 L capacity suits households that make multiple drinks at once, and the Australian 2400 W specification is appropriately powerful for 220–240 V mains.
Choose a different kettle if temperature control is essential, if you prefer a very light jug, or if a clearly marked water level is a daily priority. The KLF01BLAU’s value rests on design and build as much as on heating performance, so confirm the local price and warranty rather than assuming a price seen in another country applies to your purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Smeg KLF01BLAU dishwasher safe?
The available documentation does not establish dishwasher approval for the jug, lid or filter. Unless the manual for your regional version explicitly permits it, clean the removable filter and other parts by hand and keep the electrical base away from water.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why do listings show both 1.34 kg and 1.6 kg?
CHOICE lists 1.34 kg, while Smeg’s specification sheet gives 1.6 kg net. They are measurements from different sources and may use different definitions or configurations; use the heavier figure when judging how the kettle will feel when handled.
Can I buy a replacement KLF01 filter?
A specific replacement-part listing was not verified. Contact Smeg support or an authorised service channel in your country with the full KLF01 suffix, voltage and colour before ordering, because filter compatibility can vary by regional model.
How much electricity does a 2400 W boil use?
The 2400 W figure is a maximum draw while the heater is operating on the Australian version. Energy use in kilowatt-hours equals 2.4 multiplied by the heating time in hours, so the actual cost depends on how much water you heat, its starting temperature and your local electricity tariff.
How noisy is the KLF01BLAU?
A public decibel measurement is not established. CHOICE’s noise result is behind its member access, so buyers should not treat the available owner comments or the power rating as a verified noise comparison.
